Modern trains are equipped withan increasing number of intelli-gent sub-systems to cope withthe demand for improved perfor-

mance, safety, energy efficiencyand comfort. his evolution bringsa number of challenges to trainmanufacturers, operators and sys-tem integrators. For instance, thelack of interoperability and inte-gration between the sub-systemsmay lead to complicated systemarchitecture and various techni-cal challenges. We can say thatthe higher the number of separate

sub-systems on-board, the higherthe costs for train design, manu-facturing, operation, maintenanceand refurbishment.

EKEdeveloped rainnet to bea versatile and comprehensiveanswer to all those challenges.rainnet is what I would like tocall a Super CMS, a rain Con-trol and Management Systemthat can fully integrate communi-cation and safety systems suchas PIS, PA, PEI, JRU/ER, HMI,GPS, 3G/WIFI and CC V, and that

can interface with any other sub-system on-board for centralizedcontrol and diagnostics. he ideabehind rainnet is to provide a

single platform for the integrationand automation of all train-borneintelligent systems. he rainnetconcept enables us to offer anopen, flexible, and cost-effectivesolution for any train, and provideyou with turn-key integration ser-vices. Our target is to make yourlife easier.

    Solutions forCommuter rains

Commuter rains can be in service up to 20 hours a day. Tis means reliability, operational efficiency and quick maintenance are necessary to ensure viableoperations. We can help you improve train operation and serviceability.

Commuter rains are equippedwith a large number of onboardsub-systems to meet the demandfor exibility and high frequency of

urban transportation while provid-ing speed and comfort for longer

    journeys.

EKEs technology enables the inte-gration of all sub-systems into one

common platform, rainnet, thusgreatly simplifying your train archi-tecture. EKE has extensive experi-ence integrating third party sub-systems to rainnet, includingsensors, brakes, traction, batteries, displays, speakers, cameras andair-conditioning, to name a few. With rainnet you can develophybrid rain Communication Net-works ( CN) which combine differ-ent bus technologies such as W B,MVB, CAN, S/L and Ethernet.

Cabling and Hardware in generalare dramatically reduced, thus

lowering the costs of design, installation and repair. rainnetmodular design also contributesto speed up maintenance: rain-net Modules can be replaced

within minutes for quick turna-round times.

EKEs rainnet platform al-lows you to develop a completerain Control and ManagementSystem ( CMS) which will makeoperations easier and faster whileincreasing train availability. Terainnet CMS provides a uniquepoint of control over all train sub-

systems. It monitors sub-systemstatus and provides diagnosticsin real-time to the driver, traincrew and maintenance depot via conventional displays or mobiledevices. Te CMS automaticallytakes action and issues relevantinstructions, simplifying trainmanagement and improving cus-tomer comfort. Performance andefficiency can be improved byanalyzing collected data and tak-ing corrective actions.

rainnet allows automation ofalmost any sub-system, from con-

trol of air conditioning to lights, from door control to tank levelmonitoring and battery chargesupervision. Please see illustrationfor the most common examples.

Operations and processes canalso be automated: some ex-amples, important to commutertrains, are described below.

Every now and then, train setsneed to be added or removedto adjust to the demand. If thetrain communication backbone isbased on either Ethernet or W Bbus technology, automatic train

inauguration can be performed.Tis means your train is instantlycongured and ready for opera-tions. rain sub-systems communi-cate with each other and can alsoautomatically take over duties offailing systems. MVB does not al-low automatic inauguration, butEKE has developped a solution todynamically congure trains usingMVB bus as backbone.

EKE has also developed a fullyautomated rain Certication solu-tion, which will run a pre-denedin-depth check of all the critical

elements of the train. If the testis passed, the log can be printedout, signed by the driver, andplaced in the log-book. If again thetest fails, the system will highlightthe problem, and advise whatcould be done to solve the issue.

As described earlier, rainnetCMS controls sub-systems andhandles communications through-out the train. It makes sense touse the same communication andautomation capabilities to buildother systems onboard the train.By using rainnet as CMS, CN,Passenger Information System(PIS), Public Announcement Sys-tem (PA) and rain-to-waysideCommunication System you dra-matically reduce the system foot-print and save on material anddevelopment costs.

Passengers increasingly expecttravel information to be providedin trains as it can help them plantheir journey better. Infotainment(e.g. news, weather forecast, vid-eos) can also enhanced passengersatisfaction and even help gener-ate additional revenues through

    advertisements. rainnet can run

PIS/PA from the most simple tothe most complex. rainnet PIS/ PA can include displays, line mapsand speakers to share safety mes-sages and travel information. Withthe rainnet Mobile PIS applica-tion, passengers can get real-timeinformation on their journey, info-

tainment and additional servicesfrom their mobile devicesvia theonboard WiFi.

rainnet also takes care ofrain-to-wayside communication, for instance sending train data(e.g. system diagnostics) to thedepot. rain eet managementand maintenance is facilitated, helping the operator to maximizetrain availability and customersatisfaction.

rainnet products proven robust-ness place EKE train managementsystems among the most reliablein the world, thus maximizing theserviceability of your Commuterrains. For all our products, weprovide at least 30 years support.

    EKE product designs includes

    unique safety features and we

have extensive experience imple-menting redundancy at both thecommunication network and hard-ware level, for risk reduction.

We can provide you with up toSIL-2 certied (Risk ReductionFactor 100-1000) functionalities

when required, for instance forspeed measurement.

    rain Control andManagement System

Te rainnet CMS provides aunique point of control over alltrain sub-systems. rain opera-tions and sub-system diagnosticscan be automated, enabling faster

response times and increased reli-ability. Performance and efficiencycan be improved by analysing col-lected data and taking correctiveactions.

Te core of the rainnet CMSis the rainnet CN, the rainCommunication Network. Terainnet CN is the infrastruc-

ture enabling the exchange of in-formation throughout the train. Itconnects all the train sub-systemstogether via a common network, providing centralized control tothe rainnet CMS. Te resultis a much simpler overall systemarchitecture, easier to develop

and maintain. Te rainnet CNsupports multiple technologiesincluding W B, MVB, CAN, S/Land Ethernet. Please read therainnet CN section for more

    detailed information.

Te on-board sub-systems gener-ate an enormous amount of datafor safety (speed, braking, faultsetc.) and operation purposes (sys-tem status, energy consumption, video recording etc.). In such adynamic environment it is a chal-lenge to sort, analyse and convey

the right information, at the righttime, to the right people. rain-net CMS can gather data fromthe various train sub-systems,analyse it, and send logical com-mands and warnings to ensureoptimal performance and safety.Selected information can be auto-

matically shared with passengers, the train driver, the train captainand remotely located personnel, ina timely manner. rainnet CMScan be used to automate any

train sub-system. A few examplesare listed below:

rainnet CMS can moni-tor bearing temperature, speedand acceleration in real-time (SILcertied functions). Limits can beset and corrective actions can beautomatically triggered in case ofabnormal variation.

    rainnet CMS can also moni-

tor the train position (e.g. usingGPS technology) and announceforthcoming station names topassengers via audio announce-ments and displays.

Energy consumption can beoptimised thanks to a centralized

and automatic switching of light-ing, air conditioning and any otherdesired systems.

    rainnet CMS can also

provide a centralized control ofdoor opening, closing andlocking.

Water tanks level can be moni-tored and a warning issued whencritically low levels are reached.

    rain CommunicationNetwork

A rain Communication Network( CN) is the infrastructure ena-bling the exchange of information

throughout the train. It usuallyconsists of a Vehicle Bus for intra-vehicle communication and a rainBus for train-wide informationexchange. raditionally the highlystandardized W B (Wire rain Bus)technology is used as train busand MVB (Multifunction VehicleBus) as vehicle bus. Other bustechnologies such as CAN, S/Land PROFIBUS are also widelyused as vehicle bus. MVB or CAN

can also be used to develop train-wide communication networks.

Te Ethernet bus technologyis a relative newcomer to rainCommunication Network but hasgained popularity in recent years, providing larger bandwidth.

rain bus technologies such asW B and E B (Ethernet rain Bus)enable automatic inauguration.Tis means that train consistscan be connected, disconnectedor switched without jeopardizingthe rain Communication Networkoperations. Te train congurationchanges are automatically detect-ed and the inauguration allocates

to each node its address and ori-entation thus enabling communi-

cations across the rain Commu-nication Network. In the case ofa xed train set (e.g. EMU), theautomatic inauguration may alsobe required to be able to connect

several trains together. When acompletely xed train set is used,a cost-effective train communica-tion network can be built withoutreal train bus.

Tere is often a lack of interoper-ability and harmonization betweendifferent train systems. Conse-quently, it is common to have sev-

eral systems in a train using theirown separate communication

networks and technologies, whichleads to complicated architecture, including wiring and software.Te development of a single, fullyintegrated system greatly simpli-
