The Creation of the Eisenhower Doctrine

• It was announced in January 5th, 1957 by Dwight Eisenhower

• It was approved that same year in March by congress

• It was made to increase Soviet influence in the Middle East

Eisenhower Doctrine points…

• In late 1957 Eisenhower asked congress to authorize the use of military force whenever the president thought it was necessary to assist the Middle East nations resisting communist aggression

• It pretty much Extended the Truman Doctrine and the policy of containment to the Middle East.

• By 1957 Gamal Abdel Nasser and Arab peoples began to work with Jordan and Syria to spread pan- Arabism- The idea that all Arab people should be united as one nation. This made Eisenhower fear the Arabs connection to the Soviet Union.

Important Factoids

• In February 1958, Eisenhower’s concerns became confirmed when left-wing rebels, believed to be backed by Gamal Abdel Nasser and the Soviet Union, seized power in Iraq. Gamal Abdel Nasser was the president of Egypt.

• The President of Lebanon asked the United States for help because of fear that his government was next.

• Eisenhower ordered 5,000 marines to Lebanon to protect it’s capital.

Important factoids Continued…

• At the same time that the U.S sent 5,000 marines into Lebanon British forces went into Jordan at the request of King Hussein to protect his government

• King Hussein was the the king of Jordan• Once the situation stabilized the United States

forces withdrew

• Lebanon was afraid that their government would be taken over by the Soviet Union because the Soviet Union was trying spread communism throughout Europe

• The Unites States protected Lebanon from Soviet Rule
