Executive Summary
For Dubai and the UAE to be a source of Furniture and Furnishings seems unlikely at first glance, but the two products which have been successful in this sector viz. HS 9404 Mattress supports & articles of bedding and HS 9406 Prefabricated buildings have different origins in their success. In regard to HS 9404, in the initial years, companies from the Indian subcontinent and Pakistan, due to their historical trade ties, saw the potential of this product in the Middle East and set up factories, many in Jebel Ali to produce and export their products. Subsequently they grew and others joined, expanding the range of products. The construction boom in Dubai since the 1990s saw the local need for portacabins (HS 9406) and this local demand then grew to regional demand with the large number of companies producing these products. The initial basic products gave way to more sophisticated portacabins, now being exported to the EU as well as Africa. HS 9404 Mattress Supports and articles of bedding As per 2015 ITC data, nearly USD 14 Billion worth of these products were imported globally. Largest importers of this product were EU (>29%), North America (27%) and Japan (8.3%). UAE’s exports (in 2015) were mainly to the other GCC countries (98%) with much smaller shipments (<0.2% each) to nearly 50 other countries. North America and India remain markets for diversification of this product. HS 9406 Portacabins In 2015, the global import value was nearly USD 7 Billion. Top importers include the EU (> 27%), North America (10.4%), Norway (6.5%). 63% of UAE’s exports were to other GCC countries, mainly KSA, followed by 13% to North America and smaller quantities to Africa, the Indian Sub-continent and also to the EU. As per the ITC Chart, Africa, Sri Lanka, UK and Pakistan are identified as a suitable new markets, with market expansion potential to the EU and North America. The next few pages aims at giving statistical information on the global imports and UAE exports of these products and we hope it will be useful to DE Members.
