Entrepreneurisapersonwhostartsanenterprise.Theprocessofcreationiscalled entrepreneurship.Theentrepreneuristheactorandentrepreneurshipistheact.Theoutcomeof theactorandtheactiscalledtheenterprise.Anenterpriseisthebusinessorganizationthatis formedandwhichprovidesgoodsandservices, createsjobs, contributestonationalincome, exports and overall economic development. Entrepreneurship is defined as a systematic innovation, which consists in the purposeful andorganizedsearchforchanges, anditisthesystematicanalysisoftheopportunitiessuch changes might offer for economic and social innovation. Entrepreneurshipisadisciplinewithaknowledgebasetheory.Itisanoutcomeof complexsocio-economic,psychological,technological,legalandotherfactors.Itisadynamic and risky process. It involves a fusion of capital, technology and human talent. Entrepreneurship isequallyapplicabletobigandsmallbusinesses,toeconomicandnon-economicactivities. Different entrepreneurs might have some common traits but all of them will have some different anduniquefeatures.Ifwejustconcentrateontheentrepreneursthentherewillbeasmany models as there are ventures and we will not be able to predict or plan, how and where, and when these entrepreneurs will start their ventures. 1.2 COMPETENCIES OF ENTREPRENEURS Entrepreneurialcompetenciesaretheskillsnecessaryforanentrepreneurtoventure into an enterprise. Organize and manage an enterprise ably and competently. Realize the goal for whichtheenterpriseisestablished.Thesecompetencieshelpandentrepreneurtosuccessfully entrepreneur into an enterprise.

3 There are ten entrepreneurial competencies that a would-be entrepreneur should possess: 1.Organizing ability Anentrepreneurshouldbewiseenoughinchoosingthepeoplewithwhomhewillwork. He mustchoosepeoplewhopossessskillsthatareneededfortheimprovementandsuccessofthe business. 2.Problem-solving ability Anentrepreneurshouldberationalratherthanemotionalinhandlingobstacles.Heisalsofirm enough when making decisions without hurting others. 3. Ability to absorb setbacks and recovery Analysisinabsorbingsetbacksandrecoveryofthebusinessareimportantcompetenciesofthe entrepreneur. Accepting and analyzing the difficulties encountered help in the improvement and success of the business. 4. Human relations ability Personalityfactorssuchasemotionalstability, personalrelations, sociability, consideration, and tactfulness are important contributors to the entrepreneur manager's success in small business. One of the most important facets of human relations is one's ability to put himself insomeoneelse'splaceandknowhowtheotherpersonfeels.Thisistheabilitytopractice empathy. Anentrepreneurmustmaintaingoodrelationswithhiscustomersifheistoestablisha relationshipthatwillencouragethemtocontinuetopatronizehisbusiness.Theycanbegiven personal consideration to fit their specific needs. It is because of them that business is producing productscontinuously.Anentrepreneurshouldbeabletohandlecustomercomplaintsdirectly. He must train his employees to maintain good customer relations. He must develop and maintain harmonious working relationships with his employees to make them perform their jobs at a high level ofefficiency.Thisrelationship will give him opportunity togaingreater understanding of their needs and wants. Problems can be worked out on a face-to-face basis. One problem is 4 incomethatsometimescannotsustainemployees'needs.Ifitispossible, givethembenefits, allowances, and the like. In this way, employees will cooperate to form an effective work team. 5. Communications ability Anentrepreneurshouldhaveanabilitytocommunicateeffectivelybothorallyandin writing.Communicationalsomeansthatboththesenderandthereceiverunderstandandare understood. The employee who tells his boss what he thinks his boss wants to hear rather than what he considers to be bad news is not really communicating. Lack of communication can result from differentwaysofdoingthings.Tooneperson, belongingtoacertainorganizationmaymean social acceptance. To another person, it may mean conformity for the sake of conformity. Words also have different meanings for different individuals. Effectivewrittencommunicationismuchmoredifficulttoachievethaneffectiveoral communication. For example, the teacher might walk into his class and in a pleasant voice, with asmile, say,"Thisclasscangojumpinthelake."Veryfewstudentswouldbeoffended, although they might be puzzled. On the other hand, if the instructor wrote the same message on theblackboardandleftitfortheclasstoread, hewouldprobablyreceiveawiderangeof reactions, from anger to amusement. Thesmallbusinessmanagerwhocaneffectivelycommunicatewithcustomers, employees, suppliers, and creditors will be more likely to succeed than the manager who can not. For example, a businessfirm may have agoodcustomer who hasforgotten to makea payment ontime.Itsendsoutaformletterthatsays,"Wehavenotreceivedyourmonthlypayment; pleaseremitatonce."Thebusinessfirmintendsonlytoremindthecustomer, however, the customermaytakeitasadunandanimplicationthatheisnotmeetinghisdebts. Some individuals may be offended enough to stop trading with the business, and the firm would never know why. 5 6.Ability to make sound decisions and to take full responsibility for decisions made Anentrepreneuristheleader, theboss.Allthoseunderhimaredependentonthe decisions he makes. Thus, he should have a sound judgment which will be fair to all. 7. Persistence and patience to wait until the business really becomes successful Failure in running a business is not an obstacle for entrepreneurs. It will instead be a challenge to their abilities to handle it. Searching for the best way to succeed is a necessary skill for them. 8.Technical knowledge on how to operate the business Abasicknowledgeinhandlingabusinessisnecessaryforentrepreneursinordertobeableto organize and manage a business. 9.Sense of independence and self-confidence Anentrepreneurshouldhavetrustinhimselfandinhiswork.Hissoundjudgment,self-confidence, and independence in his job will enable him to succeed. 10.Good health and enthusiasm An entrepreneur who is physically as well as mentally fit would have a good chance of success. He will be able to grapple with the problems in the business. 1.3 ENTREPRENEURIAL PROCESS Entrepreneurialprocesscanbedefinedastheprocessthroughwhichanewventureis createdbyanentrepreneur.Thisprocessinvolvesfinding, evaluating, anddevelopingan opportunity by overcoming the strong forces that resist the creation of something new. Steps in entrepreneurial process The process has four distinct phases: 1)Identification and evaluation of the opportunity, 2)Development of the business plan, 3)Determination of the required resources ,and 4) Management of the resulting enterprise 6 Phase-1: Identify and evaluate opportunity:- Opportunityidentificationistheprocessbywhichanentrepreneurcomesupwiththe opportunity for a new venture. Opportunity identification and evaluation is a very difficult task. Mostgoodbusinessopportunitiesdonotsuddenlyappear, butratherresultfroman entrepreneurs alertness to possibilities or, in some cases, theestablishment of mechanisms that identify potential opportunities. Phase-2: DevelopBusinessPlan:Abusinessplanisthewrittendescriptionofthefuture directionofthebusiness.IthelpsentrepreneurinPuttingIdeastogetherandPreparingB-Plan Draft Agoodbusinessplanmustbedevelopedinordertoexploitthedefinedopportunity.Thisisa verytime-consumingphaseoftheentrepreneurialprocess.Anentrepreneurusuallyhasnot preparedabusinessplanbeforeanddoesnothavetheresourcesavailabletodoagoodjob.A goodbusinessplanisessentialtodevelopingtheopportunityanddeterminingtheresources required, obtaining those resources, and successfully managing the resulting venture Phase3: Determine the resources required Assessingtheresourcesneededstartswithanappraisaloftheentrepreneurspresentresources. Any resources that are critical must be distinguished from those that are just helpful. Care mustBetakennottounderestimatetheamountandvarietyofresourcesneeded.Theentrepreneur should also assess the downside risks associated with insufficient or inappropriate resources. The next step in the entrepreneurial process is acquiring the needed resources in a timely manner while giving up as little control as possible. An entrepreneur should strive to maintain as large an ownership position as possible, particularly in the start-up stage. As the business develops, more funds will probably be needed to finance the growth of the venture, requiring more ownership to be relinquished. The entrepreneur also needs to identify alternative sup-pliers of these resources alongwiththeirneedsanddesires.Byunderstandingresourcesupplierneeds, theentrepreneur can structure a deal that enables the resources to be acquired at the lowest possible cost and with the least loss of control Phase4: Manage the enterprise Afterresourcesareacquired, theentrepreneurmustusethemtoimplementthebusinessplan. Theoperationalproblemsofthegrowingenterprisemustalsobeexamined.Thisinvolves 7 implementingamanagementstyleandstructure, aswellasdeterminingthekeyvariablesfor success.Acontrolsystemmustbeestablished, sothatanyproblemareascanbequickly identifiedandresolved.Someentrepreneurshavedifficultymanagingandgrowingtheventure they created. 1.4 ENTREPRENEURSHIP IN INDIA WhenthinkingaboutentrepreneurshipinIndia, itishardnottofocusonnameslikeTata, Ambani,Premji, and Murthy. These pioneers of Indian industry have not only globalized Indian business firms, but they have also helped to pave the way for a new generation of entrepreneurs. Their examples, along with a very deliberate effort by new networks of professionals, are slowly but surely leading to a growing number of start-ups across a range of industries. Entrepreneurship is vital to a vibrant, growth-oriented economy, and this is no less true in India, wheretheeconomyhasgrownsharplysincethereformsoftheearly1990s.Indiahastwo distinct advantages in terms of creating new entrepreneurs and start-ups at this particular time: it isfacingasurgeinitsworking-agepopulation,whentherestoftheworldisconfrontingan aging citizenry; and it is able to leapfrog entire decades because of technology. Indias high rate of economic growth (averaging over 7 percent annually) can only be sustained if approximately 1 million jobs are created per month. If India can, in the next decade, provide its nextgenerationwiththeeducationandtrainingforentrepreneurialventures, itwillnotonly createthejobsnecessarytostayonagrowthtrajectory,itwillfostermorestart-ups,accelerate growth, andspawncreativeindustriesforthebenefitofmillions, includingformanyresiding outside India. 1.5 OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT The primary objectives of the program are to: Providetheknowledge, skillsandattitudesinentrepreneurshipskillstrainingin entrepreneurship skills training in the Vocational and Technical education training that will best meet the Ghanaian economyDevelop positive attitude towards selfemployment, judicious use of material and time in classandonthefield.Identifylegalissuesaffectingdevelopment, ownershipand operation of commercial property. 8 Understand strategies to manage and/or exit from distressed properties.
