Introduction

• Howard Tenens is a family owned logistics business

• Taken responsibility for the emissions it can directly control in the supply chain

• Proactive in delivering ‘sustainable logistics’

• Have implemented all the ‘quick wins’

• Seen year on year improvements

• The next step change was either• Moving to alternative fuel

• Utilising alternative vehicles

• Both of the above


Why invest in dual fuel vehicles?

• Step change in carbon footprint required

• By introducing natural gas less emissions

are produced

• Reduce CO2 emissions by ~ 15%

• Reduce CO emissions

• Reduce NOX emissions

• Reduce exhaust noise levels by 3dB

• Particulates meet Euro 4 & 5 emissions

• ULTIMATELY natural gas can be replaced with biomethane

• One of the greatest challenges of operating gas vehicles is refuelling (limited on UK road network)

• Howard Tenens is investing in refuelling infrastructure

• This investment underpins our low carbon transport strategy

• Howard Tenens will provide access to our gas refuelling stations

• Others can then enter the market without highcapital infrastructure investment

Options for Natural Gas

• If you are running or are interested in running any of these vehicles

• Howard Tenens can provide refuelling at its depots


Biomethane as a road transport fuel

• Biogas is produced during the breakdown of organic waste materials

• Biogas can be upgraded to biomethane by removal of CO2, H20, H2S & siloxanes.

• Biomethane can be used as a substitute for natural gas in dedicated or dual fuel vehicles

• By replacing diesel with biomethane transport can become carbon neutral


Replacing natural gas with Biomethane

• Making good emission savings with natural gas• We are looking to move to biomethane • Current supply is in liquid format, transported by

tanker• In the future biomethane will be grid injected and

will be able to be drawn off at the point of demand


Potential Carbon savings - UK

• There are 447,000 artics and rigids in UK that travel over 18 billion miles per annum and consume 10 billion litres of diesel

• The baseline carbon footprint is 26 billion kg

• If these were all dual fuel covering same mileage, savings:

• 3.9 billion kg on diesel & natural gas• 7.8 billion kg on diesel & biomethane

Summary

• It is possible to reduce the emissions of heavy goods vehicles & therefore the haulage industry

• We need to encourage others to invest in vehicles

• We need more producers of biomethane to create a competitive market

• Howard Tenens will provide thirdparty access to its gas refuelling stations
