The city of Harker Heights has done an outstanding job in planning for the future water needs although we are in stage 1 drought contingency plan. Even if we have normal rain fall this winter and spring, lake levels cannot catch up. By next summer if Belton Lake drops below 573 ft above sea level a stage 2 drought plan will have to go into effect with a mandatory 10 % water reduction. Harker Heights has made a substantial investment in helping the city reach its goal of improving the city’s water supply by building a new maintenance yard pump station and 1.5 million ground storage tank which is projected to be in use by July. Conservation efforts must be stepped up in all the cities and districts in Central Texas and water protected instead of being transferred to other areas he added.
