Did you know…………How Lent as we know it came about

The death and resurrection of Jesus Christ are at the heart of the Christian gospel, and Good Friday and Easter are two of the most significant celebrations of the Christian year. Lent is a season of preparation and repentance during which we anticipate Good Friday and Easter. Just as we carefully prepare for big events in our personal lives, such as a wedding or commencement, Lent invites us to make our hearts ready for remembering Jesus' passion and celebrating Jesus' resurrection.

Originally, the focus of Lent was on the elect preparing for initiation, but with the decline in the catechumenate and in adult initiation by the fifth century, focus shifted to penitents, since public penance was still practiced. Lent then took on a penitential air, as the whole community prayed for the penitents and fasted with them. This was the time when Ash Wednesday got its name. Beginning probably in Gaul, the practice developed of sprinkling the penitents with ashes—a practice which was adopted voluntarily by other community members in the tenth and eleventh centuries and was eventually incorporated into the liturgy on the first day of Lent. With the rise of the mendicant orders (especially the Franciscans, Dominicans and Carmelites) in the thirteenth century, Lent shifted focus again. Mendicant preachers focused on the passion of Christ, and the prayer and fasting of Lent assumed an aspect of suffering with the Savior. Penitence and a focus on participation in the sufferings of Christ led to very strict rules for fasting, abstinence, and other behavior during Lent. Although feast days were rarely observed during this season, the appearance of even a few feast days, with their relaxation of the Lenten rules, helped to lighten the load, and the appearance of rose vestments on Laetare Sunday (the Fourth Sunday of Lent) in the sixteenth century served as a reminder that Lent’s strictures would soon end.

The practice of a forty-day preparation period began in the Christian church during the third and fourth centuries. The number forty carries biblical significance based on the forty years Israel spent in the wilderness and Jesus' forty-day fast in the wilderness. The forty days of Lent begin on Ash Wednesday and continue through holy week, not counting Sundays (which are reserved for celebratory worship). In practice, many congregations choose to focus Sunday worship on the themes of repentance and renewal. The singing of “Alleluia” and “Glory to God” are omitted.

Lent has historically included the instruction of persons for baptism and profession of faith on Easter Sunday; the calling back of those who have become estranged from the church; and efforts by all Christians to deepen their piety, devotion, and readiness to mark the death and resurrection of their Savior. As such, the primary focus of the season is to explore and deepen a "baptismal spirituality" that centers on our union with Christ rather than to function only as an extended meditation on Christ's suffering and death. FASTING: Eating less food than normal (One normal, full-sized meal and two smaller meals which, if combined, would not exceed one full meal. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.)

ABSTINENCE: Do not eat meat. (All Fr idays dur ing Lent.)

ALMSGIVING: Mater ial generosity to the less for tunate. (Money, goods, acts of char ity.)

Wszystko o Środzie Popielcowej

Dlaczego lubię Popielec? Ryzykowne pytanie.

A jednak można polubić ten dzień.

W Kościele pierwszych wieków biskup naznaczał w ten sposób jedynie tych, którzy czynili publiczną pokutę i aż do Wielkiego Czwartku byli wyłączeni ze wspólnoty. Z cza-

(Mk 1,15), przypominamy sobie, ile jeszcze mamy w sobie zła,

To autentyczny znak

oddania się Bogu - oddania Mu naszego życia i grzeszności. Znów można zacząć od nowa.

2017 CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL

“...He became poor, so that by His poverty you might become rich…” ~St. Paul (2 Cor 8:9)

The season of Lent is a time for us to renew our heart-to-heart relationship with God and with our neighbors. It is also an opportunity to reflect more deeply on what it means to be Disciples of Christ. One way we can respond to this call and help others to experience the love of God is by making a gift through the Catholic Ministries Appeal.

The Catholic Ministries Appeal provides the means for our Diocese to serve more than 600,000 people of God in our communities each year. Your generosity would enable us to support the Diocesan efforts in evangelization, liturgy and worship, youth and young adult ministry, and programs for the poor and disadvantaged through Catholic Charities. It

also helps fund critically important religious education programs while promoting vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life.

This Lent, I invite you to reflect on the words of Saint Paul, “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich yet for your sake He became poor, so that by His poverty you might become rich.” (2 Cor 8:9). His sacrifice is a model for all of us to follow as we join together to impact the lives of thousands of people on Long

Island through support of the Catholic Ministries Appeal.

Thank you for your continuing generosity and commitment to the good works of our Church. Pledge cards are being mailed this week and can also be found by the Church entrances.

CEMETERY NEWS

The beginning of LENT is a reminder that Christmas and all old decorations must be removed from the cemetery to make room

for Easter decorations.

Anything left behind will be removed and discarded by cemetery personnel.

Thank you for your help in keeping our cemetery beautiful.
