ASH WEDNESDAY / LENT

LENTEN GUIDELINES: Ash Wednesday, March 5, and Good Friday April 18, are days of both fasting and abstinence.

A day of Fasting means: a limit of one full meal with two smaller meals, not exceeding the main meal, for those ages 18-59 inclusive. A day of Abstinence means: all who have reached their 14th year are bound to abstain totally from meat on that day.

ASH WEDNESDAY: March 5th Ash Wednesday begins our season of Lent. Ashes will be distributed during all Masses in our Church. And, there will be an “Ash Service” at noon with distribution of ashes. (Please Note: The noon service is not an actual Mass!)

Masses: 7:00 a.m./ 8:30 a.m./ 7:00 p.m. Ash Service: 12:00 noon.

Ash Wednesday is NOT a holy day of obligation, it is a day of both fasting and abstinence.

We fast and abstain that we can realize what we need to let go of . . . to become like Christ.

Sunday Reflection by Fr. Victor

Can a Mother Forget Her Infant?

A few years ago, while in my office, an old lady visited me and asked for prayers. I was considering the kind of prayers she might need; maybe prayers for her painful arthri-tis or aching joints. But it turned out to be none of these. She seemed in healthy condition— as fit as a fiddle. She had lost her baby fifty years ago in childbirth and had never forgotten this incident. It was just like yesterday, she said. I was thrown in deep meditation. I thought fifty years was enough time to forget a dead baby. I was wrong and this lady proved it. She told me that God was gracious to her and gave her other children who were alive, healthy and in their sixties. The memory of this particular baby never left her mind. I understood her prayer point and con-soled her as best as I could.

Today’s readings offer us such a hope about our relation-ship with our God. Often times, we think that God has gone on va-cation and so cannot attend to us at his desk. But he’s always availa-ble to listen to us even when the condition of our heart tells us he’s on vacation.

The people of Israel while in exile thought that God had for-gotten them. Isaiah began to encourage them thus, “Can a mother forget her infant, be without tenderness for the child of her womb? Even should she forget, I will never forget you.” The pain of loss of homeland, personal possessions and loss of dignity while in a for-eign land increased their level sorrow. But the prophet saw this as a moment of reinforcing their faith in God who made a covenant with their ancestors never to forsake them. Although the exile happened, God would restore them to their homeland and prosper them.

Is this not what we do? We worry about tomorrow as if God’s grace is not sufficient for us? In the gospel, Jesus asked typical questions about our attitude to life. “Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds in the sky; they do not sow or reap, they gather nothing into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are not you more important that they? Can any of you by worrying add a single moment to your life-span?” It’s important to relax and reflect on our life’s situations and see what can be done to solve those recurring issues.

The complexity of the human heart makes it difficult to guess rightly what’s in another person’s heart. However, God resides in the heart and only He can make a stressful heart soft and a confused mind less worrisome. St Paul says, “Thus should one regard us: as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God.” For you to be regarded as a steward or a good servant, you must have an open heart that thinks of good stewardship. Any action that translates God’s commands into practical tangible work is already unveiling the great mysteries found in the heart filled with love. And only a mother knows how painful it is to lose a child no matter the years gone by.

What makes us think that God will forget us when a mother cannot forget her child? The answer can be found in the disposition of our hearts. When we are sorrowful we project this mood to God and see God as unconcerned about our situation. When we feel pain, we think God is uncaring. But God still cares about us. He resides in our hearts and that is where God can be found. The old lady knew it and requested prayers for her lost child. I did what she wanted. I saw her smiles on her way home. In sorrow and in joy, look up to God and say, “Only in God is my soul at rest.”

Keep smiling!

Faith Formation

FOCUS ON THE CATECHIST My name is Julie Stone. I have been a member of St. Paul's Church since 1978 when we celebrated mass in the cafeteria of Moon Mountain Elementary I received my First Commun-ion at St. Mary's Catholic Church when I was in 2nd grade in Port Washington, Wisconsin. My family moved to Arizona shortly after that and St. Paul's soon became our new parish & felt like home. I was confirmed when I was in high school by Fr. O'Carroll and enjoyed many re-treats and classes held at St. Paul's. I was married to my wonderful husband Dean in May of 1990 here at St. Paul's and we have three beautiful daughters - Sarah (20) Katie (19) & Emi-ly Grace (15). The girls have received the sacraments of Baptism, Reconciliation, First Eucha-rist & Confirmation here at St. Paul's and I love when some of our friends comment on our family & how they have grown - especially those at the 8:00 am Sunday Mass. I've been a catechist since 2001 and received my Catechist Certification in 2010 while working with some amazing teachers along the way. I love seeing the 3rd graders I have taught receiving the gifts of the Body & Blood of Christ for the first time. I am very blessed to be a Catechist and to teach wonderful children. My hope is that they continue to keep Jesus in their heart and find goodness in everything.

T he family is the original cell of social life (Catechism of Catholic Church 2207). A healthy society

begins with a nurturing family. We learn our initial relationships in the home beginning with mother and father. We develop rela-tionships in our families and we expand those relationships into our neighborhoods, our city, our county, our state, and our world. The home is where we first learn our moral values and initiate ourselves into life to become a productive piece in society. But what happens when that family relation gets disrupted? It is not uncommon in countries where abject poverty exists that fami-lies are broken apart because a father or mother needs to seek employment in faraway places to provide the basic needs of food, clothing, and shelter. Family is left behind and desperation sets in. Kino Border Initiative (KBI) in Nogales, run by the Jesuit order, is on the forefront of coming into contact with those men and women on a daily basis who are desperate to provide those needs for their families. Many are broken, hungry, depressed, mentally and physically injured with most not knowing literally what the next hour will bring for them. There is no "comfort zone" for these individuals. Christ is calling us to be in relation with His most cherished creation---the human person who has dignity rooted in his Father's image. There is a new blog site here at St. Paul's, spjusticepost.blogspot.com that lists these basic needs for the recently deported into Mexican border with no clothing, food, family, or means of communication. If you are interested in donating please call the office. We also encourage you to visit the KBI website at kinoborderinitiative.org On Saturday, March 29th, 2014 KBI is hosting its fourth annual fundraising dinner at St. Francis Xavier School at 4715 N. Cen-tral Avenue. If you are interested in attending or becoming part of the St. Paul's KBI ministry, please contact Gerry Corrigan at [email protected] "The more prosperous nations are obliged, to the extent they are able, to welcome the foreigner in search of the security and the means of livelihood which he cannot find in his country of origin." Xavier/Brophy Theatre will present Sense and Sensibility as its spring drama.

Xavier/Brophy Theatre will present Sense and Sensibil-ity as its spring drama production. Written in 1811 by popular novelist Jane Austen, Sense and Sensibil-ity follows the lives of the three Dashwood sisters and their mother after their father's death. The clashes be-tween these women and the other heirs, class status, gender roles in the 1800s, and romantic entanglements all make for a delightful evening of theatre. Performance dates will be Thursday, March 6th, Friday, March 7th, and Saturday, March 8th at 7:00 p.m. There will also be a matinee performance on Saturday, March 8th at 2:00 p.m. All performances will be held in the Kem-per and Ethel Marley Theater in the Virginia G. Piper Per-forming Arts Center on Xavier's campus. Tickets are $7.00 for all patrons, and may be reserved either by con-

tacting the Jackson Box Office at 602-240-3161 or [email protected], or by pur-chasing them at the door. General seating only.
