South Sudan: Thousands More Affected by Violence
April, 2013.
Syria: Updates from the Field
Thousands of people (mainly civilians) have been affected by the armed conflict in Southern Sudan. Many have been wounded, families have been separated, and access to food and water has been difficult. The ICRC has sent in response teams to help out the victims by treating the wounded and distributing relief items such as kitchen sets, blankets, and mosquito nets. EHL Connections: Module 1: Exploration 1B: Looking at humanitarian acts Module 3: Exploration 3C: Who is responsible for respecting IHL? Module 5: Exploration 5A: Needs that arise from the devastation of war.
EHL Teachers Conference Report
The report from the EHL Teachers Conference at Brock University on November 30th &
December 1st, 2012 is now available. The report highlights geographic and subject area
demographics of the teachers in attendance, teacher feedback about the most interesting components of the training and toolkit, as well as teacher testimony which was VERY pos-itive! The report also includes resources as requested by teachers in attendance such as the EHL curriculum resources that are available online, as well as a free 3 hour EHL online tutorial for teachers provided by the American Red Cross. These and other re-sources are shared on page 12 of the report. Also, don’t miss photos from the conference in the report which are up on our Facebook page! A very special thanks to our Ontario Zone Teacher champions Marilyn Wylie and Andrew Cresswell as well as Atlantic Zone Teacher Champion Taunya Pynn-Crowe for sharing their strategies for implementing the curriculum as our teacher facilitators at the conference.

Democratic Republic of the Congo: Civilians Again
Trapped by the Fighting
Prior to the international conference on the humanitarian impact of nuclear weapons that
took place in Oslo on March 4-5, the ICRC stressed that in the event of a nuclear explosion,
the international community lacks the capacity to provide relief and humanitarian assistance
to survivors.
EHL Connections:
Module 2: Exploration 2A: Limiting the devastation of war
Exploration 2D: Focus on weapons
2013: A Successful Year Ahead for EHL
in Ontario!
Due to the fighting in Kitchanga, a
shell has exploded near Saint-Benoît
Hospital wounding patients and staff.
There is no evidence to suggest that
the hospital was targeted. But the
ICRC is very concerned about the fate
of the people here and reiterates the
fact that medical personnel, medical
facilities, and hospitals must be
spared at all times.
EHL Connections:
Module 3: Exploration 3C: Who is responsible for respecting IHL?
Module 5: Exploration 5A: Needs that arise from the devastation of war
