    MEN (MIDDLE Kingdom, Dynasties XI-

    XVII)

    .1. Garments:

    Outer upper: Tunic with sleeve made of heavy ortransparent linen and it is unbelted and

    reaching to knee. They also used belted tunic of opaque, soft

    material.

    Outer lower: Continuation of older types;transparent outerskirt over underskirt. At firstboth skirts were same length, then outerskirt

    narrow and longer in back than in front.

    Under: Loin cloth.

    Cloaks & overgarments: They used shawl. Theywore a draped robe with opening for head.

    2. Hair:

    Wig set low on forehead covering ears; longhaired wig with hair falling back from crown.

    Pshent, badge, claft, helmet-like capornamented with royal asp.

    4. Footwear:

    Sandal often lined with cloth, embroidered ingold and decorated with enamel and jewels.

    Heelless sandal with turned-up toe was worn

    by upper class. Enemy sandal with picture of enemy on inside

    of sole was used.

    5. Accessories:

    Waist belt with elaborate, long, narrow apron

    Kings had royal apron decorated with colored

    feathers, asp, lions head and polychromeglass. A slave wore an apron with his mastersname on it.

    Lions tail sometimes worn at back of skirt ofroyalty, cross or key of life.

    They carry walking stick of 6 feet long.

    6. Jewelry:

    Bracelet inlaid with precious stones, for the

    upper or lower arm, anklet of coloured

    embroidery or of gold and silver.

    Necklace with pendant figure of god or sacred

    animal.7. Typical colours:

    Green was the popular colour and white

    generally used by upper class.

    Triad of colours were used black- yellow- red;

    red-blue-white; dark blue-light blue-white;

    cream-blue- black etc.

    They had specific colours for each in

    manuscripts like yellow for woman, red for

    man, black for king, white for nobleman,

    green for God and blue for slave.

    8. Typical Materials:

    Wool was considered unclean by priest and

    worn by layman. Heavy and transparent linen

    was used in tunic.

    Upper class used fine linen of natural colour,

    bleached or dyed often embroidered with

    gold, silver and purple .

    Leopard skin was worn by priest.

    9. Make up:

    Skin was painted or dyed, oils were used. They

    used false ceremonial beard with or without

    slender line along jaw bone.

    Length of their beard determined the rank of a

    person.

    1. Garments:

    Outer upper: women usedtunic with strapacross shoulder or with kimono sleeve.

    Robe of opaque, soft material, similar to amans garment although draped differently.

    Outer lower: transparent outer skirt;

    wraparound skirt with fullness at front. Theirskirts were longer than the mans and belted

    higher.

    Plain wraparound skirt was the garment of a

    slave.

    Cloaks & overgarments: shawl, shoulder cape

    and rectangular cape were used.

    2. Hair:

    Short bob similar to type worn by man.

    Sometimes rather long with curled ends wereworn behind ears. Black wig ornamented with

    gold, having two tresses extending to the breast.

    3 Headdress:

    Elaborate or merely a circlet of gold worn by

    royalty. Vulture cap, plumed or feather

    headdress were worn.

    Crown of Lower Egypt worn over crown of

    Upper Egypt by queen.

    Fillet with naturalistic lotus, decorated cloth

    over wig and perfumed cone were also used.

    4. Footwear:

    Sandal with turned up toe was used

    5. Accessories: Parasol used on chariot and for ceremonial

    procession was used.

    Fan of leaves or dyed feathers were used. Walking stick of 4 to 6 feet long, hair comb of

    wood or ivory, stick of ivory, wood, bronze or

    glass used for applying make up, container of

    alabaster for kohl, mirror of highly polished

    metal.

    6. Jewelry:

    Breast plate, elaborate girdle clasp, gold, silver,

    bronze and enamel earrings.

    They had bead necklace with pendant in form ofamulet or sacred animal. Flat bracelet and arm

    bands; sometimes anklets also used.

    7. Typical colours:

    Green was very popular at first, white, yellowand red also worn.

    White was very fashionable later.

    8. Typical materials:

    Very fine linen was used.

    9. Make

    up:

    Body oils of various kinds, including castor oil

    Eye and brow made longer with kohl; eyeshadow of blue or green.

    Ochre used on cheeks, henna used to colourfinger tips and toes.

    Special care given to teeth bone or ivory

    false teeth held in place with gold wires. False beard attached by a gold chin strap

    sometimes worn by queen.
