BIOGRAPHY
Nicholas Kalavrezos is a Consultant in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at
University College London Hospitals with a sub-specialty interest in
oral oncology and microvascular reconstruction. His clinical practice
also includes surgical treatment of salivary gland neoplasms, as well
as thyroid surgery.
Nicholas was born in October 1962 in Athens, Greece to a medical
family. His father was an obstetrician – gynaecologist in Athens – and
Nicholas was brought up visiting his father's medical practice
regularly. This influenced him significantly in choosing a surgical
career from a very early stage of his life.
Nicholas started his undergraduate training in dentistry in 1980 at the
University of Athens. Given his desire to follow a surgical career he
continued to study medicine at the University of Patras where he
graduated in 1992. During his medical training Nicholas spent his
summer holidays visiting eminent Maxillofacial Units in Europe. One of
these observerships included time spent with Professor Hermann
Sailer, Professor of Maxillofacial Surgery at the University Hospital of
Zurich in Switzerland. Professor Sailer was impressed by Nicholas’s
enthusiasm and, indeed, offered him a full resident post in his unit.
He started his maxillofacial career in the University Hospital in Zurich
in 1993 following one year’s training in general surgery. In Zurich he
completed his thesis in the management of craniofacial trauma. After a
four-year residential programme, he moved to the UK where he
4
completed his training. The emphasis was on head and neck oncology
and microvascular surgery and therefore Nicholas gained experience in
eminent UK centres such as Liverpool, Mount Vernon, St
Bartholomew’s and the Royal London Hospital.
In early 2002 he was appointed Consultant Maxillofacial Surgeon at
University College London Hospitals with a sub-specialty interest in
oral oncology and microvascular reconstruction. Within the last 5 years
the Head and Neck Unit at the University College Hospital has been
developed into one of the busiest and most successful Head and Neck
Units in the country. The surgical armamentarium of the Centre has
improved vastly- Nicholas carries out one to two microvascular cases
per week with success rates well beyond 95%! His clinical practice also
includes surgical treatment of salivary gland neoplasms as well as
thyroid surgery.
He has set up links with various centres in Europe and he organizes
annual conferences of head & neck oncology and facial reconstruction.
Of particular interest are the links he developed with patients from
Nigeria - coming to London for unique single stage treatment of huge,
face disfiguring tumours such as ameloblastomas.
These patients have been refused treatment elsewhere and indeed,
they come to London for life-changing, single-stage surgical
treatment:
