Cherries…California’s cherry season is looking to start ahead of schedule. Supplies will begin lightly
around April 22nd and will peak the first three weeks of May. On the other hand, California’scrop is larger this year, which is a positive note over last year’s tight supplies. Quality
dictates a lot of the demand, and at present, quality is excellent.Please note as we move towards the end of May and towards the first
harvests in Washington, expect a small gap and tighter market.

flavor and deeper color.It pairs well with strawberries. Cook it down with sugarinto a chutney, or with strawberries into a compote or
jam.
Fiddlehead FernsFiddlehead Ferns are a gourmet wild spring
vegetable. Its texture is tender, succulent andcrunchy. When steamed, they become a bit bitter,
but boiling helps bring out their sweet flavor. They can be used in place of broccoli or asparagus in
any recipe or even used in place of basil in pesto.
English PeasPeas have a tender yet slightly crunchy texture and
a sweet pea flavor. Available now through earlysummer. They are at their best in May.
Simply steamed and drizzled with melted butter makes anexcellent side dish for savory entrées.

CITRUS - Lemons: We are in Ventura. With the change,expect shift in size, peaking on the smaller size and very limitedon larger sizes. Expect the market to tighten up. Limes: This is thetime of year where overall supplies are low until the first or secondweek of May. Quality is excellent overall. AVOCADO - California harvest picked up a bit last week andlooks to be consistent this week. Fruit is just not sizing up as growershad hoped due to the lack of water in the southern growing area.
PINEAPPLES - We are back to a more normal demand for thelighter, but steady supplies that we have. Still looking for supplies startto come back as we move through April.
STONE FRUIT - CA Cherries are expected to be availablesometime around April 22nd. Early varieties of apricots are expectedto start as early as April 15th. Peaches and nectarines will startshortly after available at the beginning of May.
SQUASH - Hard Squash will continue to lighten in supply.Acorn and butternut are becoming more scarce. Kabocha isbecoming less available. Yellow squash supply is very limited andmany lots are showing Quality and condition issues.
STRAWBERRY- There are chances of rain in the forecastfor all CA growing regions as we head into the weekend.BLACKBERRY- Supply has improved some to start thisweek. We are seeing less issues with red cell and soft, broken berries.BLUEBERRY- California’s central valley blueberryproduction is forecasted to begin around May 1.RASPBERRY- Salinas and Watsonville production isgetting started in a small way
BROCCOLI- Broccoli supplies are still plentiful with severalgrowing regions packing. Quality is really nice with little to noyellowing.CAULIFLOWER- Cauliflower supplies are limited in theSalinas and Santa Maria growing regions. Quality is very nice out ofboth growing regions with little creamy to yellow discoloration.
LETTUCE ROMAINE / ICEBERG / LEAF -Production is winding down in Yuma by the end of theweek on Iceberg. Santa Maria has started with afew suppliers. Huron will continue through next week.Insects are seen along with some irregular shaped heads inHuron. Next Monday Salinas and Santa Maria/ Oxnard will bewhere leaf items will be predominately harvested. Quality isgenerally good out of Salinas and Santa Maria while the otherareas are having insect issues, mainly in Yuma.
TOMATOES - Rounds - Mexico is also looking better onsupplies. Quality is Good Fair. Roma - New crops also looking toharvest. Quality is Good / Fair. Cherry - Mexico is also lookinggood with supplies. Quality is Good / Fair. Grape Market is alsoadjusting lower with more supplies and demand down. Quality isGood / fair.CUCUMBERS- Supply on cucumber is improving. Moresupply from the northern district. Quality is better on all sizes.
CABBAGE / BOK CHOY - Markets are active andsupplies are improving.Brussels Sprouts: Brussel Sprout supplies remain extremelylimited. The market remains active at extremely higher prices.Quality is fair at best with some lots arriving with discolored sproutsand black leaves.

BELL PEPPERS - Green bell pepper continue to be verylimited. Yellow and red bell pepper are more available with bettercolor due to warm weather.EGGPLANT - Eggplant will continue with lighter supply fromboth central and northern Mexico. Excellent color and condition willcontinue with many number two products.
GRAPES - green seedless grape: Green grape supplies aretightening up. red seedless grape:Quality has been solid and markets have remained flat. Mexican /CA harvest is expected to start mid May.
VEGETABLES / FRUITSVEGETABLES
CHILE PEPPER - Previous weather conditions, combinedwith strong demand have resulted in tight availability for all of thechili pepper varieties (jalapeno, serrano, red fresno, caribe,habanero, Anaheim, pascilla).CELERY - Small sizing is slightly higher in price. Demand isminimal, however. Quality is generally reported as good.
ONIONS - Onion - Onions are still coming out of storage inthe Northwest (Idaho, Washington) Southern California will start upwith New crop Yellow onions the middle of the month followed byred onions about a week after the yellow start up. Quality is beingreported as good. Green Onions: Some quality issues upon arrivalhave been yellow to brown tops.
CILANTRO - Good supplies continue and this is keeping themarket at reasonable levels. Quality is still an issue with arrivalsshowing dehydration and yellowing of the leaves.
MELONS - Cantaloupe: Quality is good overall with somelots being exceptionally nice. Honeydew: Honduran andGuatemalan grown honeydews are really good. The Mexican dewsare also very nice. The market is steady across the board.Watermelon: The spring crop has finally arrived and product isnow being shipped from southern Sonora Mexico. Qualitycondition and brix are all very good.
CARROTS - Carrots are still small, and still not getting whatwas hoped for on Jumbo size carrots. Jumbo size still very tight, andstill looks like it will be awhile before any real improvement of size isseen.

The quality on the whites has been good.
