WEEKLY UPDATE

December 22, 2017

From the desk of the Principal:

The character education word of the month is CELEBRATE

STUDENTS OF THE WEEK

STUDENT: Malek Martinez Nominated by: Mr. Martirone

I would like to nominate Malek Martinez for student of the week. During the lockdown on

Tuesday, Malek's class had a substitute who did not have a key to lock the door. Malek found

me in the hall and asked for help. He did not know if it was a drill or a real crisis, yet he risked

himself for the safety and security of his classmates. In this day in age it's important to have

people like Malek around in a crisis.

STUDENTS: Alexis Rosario and Alyssa Lazlo Nominated by: Sra Joline In the true spirit of the season, Alexis and Alyssa worked together to decorate my classroom

door as a surprise. Many students have helped with the doors here, but I feel these two students

did it as more than a fun activity. I had been excited to decorate the door myself and had created

a detailed design, and then for several reasons realized I’d be unable to create it and was

disappointed. Last Friday, I was away all day during a field trip and I returned at the end of the

day to see my exact intricate design completed all over my doorway. The girls had created

decorations at home, taken after school time and their study halls to put everything up and

surprise me with holiday cheer. These young ladies exemplified kindness, generosity,

thoughtfulness, and great spirit! “Fleece” Navidad!

“Breadstick Day”; a phrase that brings smiles to droves of students and staff who look forward

to this twice monthly menu favorite in the cafeteria. As much as Breadstick Day is becoming

part of the EHTHS lore, I experienced firsthand all of the preparation that goes into making

those smiles occur. The cafeteria staff invited Dr. Gruccio and myself to be part of serving food

and seeing all the behind-the-scenes work that goes into feeding over 2,500 students and staff

every day. There really is no downtime in the kitchens. Food is prepared right up until first

lunch, the staff then switches to serving and as soon as the students are done eating, they

descend on the seating area to wipe down all the tables and reset for second lunch. Back to

breadsticks: even though we served pancakes and sausage on Monday, every spare minute was

used prepping breadsticks for the ovens the following day. Breadsticks are actually a two day

project because of the demand and the speed of which everything needs to occur the morning

they are served. The bottom line from the whole experience was simply that our cafeteria staff

is amazing in the volume and variety of the work they do…and for the smiles they put on our

faces every day. Thank you on behalf of all of the students and staff!

On Wednesday, I had the privilege of hopping behind the grill at the Eagle Eatery to make

bagel sandwiches alongside students that crank out breakfast every morning. The students in

Mr. Coyle’s classroom are a highly efficient, professional group that are able to keep up with a

high volume of orders in a safe, friendly (and tasty!) environment. A substantial amount of prep

work goes into this process as well as the students learn work place skills including food

handling, inventory, and customer service. Thanks to Mr. Coyle, Ms. Johnston, Mr. Calhoun,

and all my friends on the crew for letting me hop in for a few minutes (hopefully I didn’t slow

down production too much). If anyone remembers the I Love Lucy scene with the conveyer belt

backing up, it was in the back of my head while working in both kitchens this week.

On Saturday, December 16, 2017 The Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America

(FCCLA) students and advisors hosted their first craft fair. Over thirty vendors participated in

the event despite the winter weather. The Egg Harbor Township school district family and

surrounding community enjoyed holiday shopping, snacks, and live music. Proceeds from the

event will go to support student activities in the FCCLA club.

Wednesday, December 20th, saw the “Computer Science Showcase” take place in the Media

Center where many of the students who were honored by the Board of Education for their

performance in the “Hackathon” at Stockton University, displayed a variety of S.T.E.M.

projects to visitors throughout the day. College representatives from Drexel University, Rowan

University, and the College of New Jersey came to the high school media center to view student

projects and give the students advice about the expectation of Computer Science students at the

university level. Many of the students expanded their knowledge gained in their Computer

Science classes and presented independent projects that required them to demonstrate high level

computing and Mathematical concepts. Mr. Swift and his students put on an impressive

showcase. Everyone in attendance was impressed by the project development and presentation

of the concepts by the students. Congratulations to Mr. Swift, Dr. Graham and all of our CS

students on a great day!

Education and Training 3 students planned a holiday show for the four year olds of the ABC

learning center preschool program. The students coordinated with the Performing Arts Dance

students to plan a festive holiday event for the children, parents, and school family to enjoy.

Similarly, the Education Training 2 students planned a holiday sing-along for the three year old

preschool students. The high school students narrated and practiced the songs with the children

to create a cheerful sing-along, which was topped off with a visit from Santa.

David Sholler, EHTHS Alumnus and current executive with the Philadelphia 76ers and New

Jersey Devils, will be speaking to freshmen and sophomores today and to juniors and seniors

later in the year. Dave motivates young people to have goals, follow their dreams and continue

to work hard whatever their circumstances. Will have a report and pictures when we come back

from break.

Have a wonderful, peaceful holiday,

Terry

BOWLING

Congratulations to the EHTHS bowling team for yet another victorious

match against Deptford Township. Currently we are 5-0-1 as we enter

into the holiday break. Please encourage our varsity bowlers as they

compete in this weekend's SJ Singles Tournament in Lakewood, NJ. A

fan base is always welcome as we will be traveling to Lakewood for the

competition. A special thanks from the team goes to John Auer

(transportation) for his prompt assistance and support, and to our new

favorite driver Chi (he is the guy with the peace sign). We wish the best

of luck to all winter sports teams and their athletes. Go EHT! Happy

Holidays.

GIRLS

BASKETBALL

12/18/17: EHT (40) Bridgeton (23) WIN!

The Lady Eagles travelled to Bridgeton to earn their first win of the season.

The girls played tough defense and after a slow first quarter, we settled

down to score some buckets. All ten girls got in and contributed. Mya

Pomatto led the team with 11 points and Lauren Baxter had a game high 7

steals.

PLEASE come out to pack the gym for our first home game tonight against

Pleasantville. The JV girls start the night off with a game at 4PM and the

Varsity follows immediately after at 5:30! See you there.

BOYS

BASKETBALL

The freshman boys basketball is 2-0. We beat Mainland 76-44 with

Ethan Dodd scoring 31 points and Scott Zimmerman scoring 16. We

won against Bridgeton 48-36 with Scott Zimmerman leading the way

with 19 points and Aidan Winkler scoring 7.

The JV team is 1-1 so far this year losing a tough game to Mainland and

coming back to beat a tough Bridgeton team.

The Varsity team is 2-0 after beating Mainland in their home opener on

Friday, and defeating Bridgeton this past Monday. It has been a

complete team effort so far and the boys look to continue their growth

Wednesday night against Pleasantville.
