Additional Opportunities . . .Research Participants Needed

Researchers at the University of Puget Sound are looking for children with Down syndrome to participate in research studies. The first study is a kicking study. Researchers are investigating whether playing with an infant kicking toy (the finding Nemo Underwater Adventure Gym by Fisher-Price) helps babies with Down Syndrome increase their kicking movements.

We are looking for infants between the ages of 3 and 5 months to start the study. Families would come to the University for 2 visits and participate in an 8-week program with the toy at home. When they finish the study, they get to keep the toy.

The second study is for children with DS who have been walking for at least one year and weigh under 85 pounds. In this study, researchers are investigating whether orthotic use leads to increased movement and participation compared to no orthotic use. The children are seen 3 times in Tacoma. During the first month of the study, the children do not wear orthotics. In the second month we ask them to wear Surestep Orthotics. We provide the orthotics for this study.

To participate or ask questions please contact Julia Looper, PT, PhD at [email protected] or call (253) 879-2895.

EFMP Camp JBLMOutdoors for All had 20 adaptive cy-cles for everyone to try. It was nice to see the variety of bicycles that are available. Families Overcoming Under Stress (FOCUS) provided an arts and crafts activity that tied into our event as well as their program. Sensory-friendly music was provid-ed by Megumi Azekawa from Puget Sound Music Therapy and allowed participants to try a variety of in-struments. She will soon be teach-ing classes thru SkiesUnlimited. The day ended with Family Game night and an outdoor movie at the Northwest Adventure Center for the overnight campers. Families played a variety of games with other families and volunteers. They also enjoyed fresh popcorn and Star Wars Fla-Vor-Ice during the outdoor movie. On Sunday morning families were treated to a volunteer prepared pan-cake and sausage breakfast. Our EFMP Camp could not have been possible without the support of our sponsors: Armed Forces Bank, Gravelly Lake Dentistry, KBTC, Lewis-McChord Communities (Eq-uity Residential) and USAA. The Northwest Adventure Center con-tributed to our camp as well. Thanks to all of them!
