76 SUNDAY EXPRESS February 14, 2016 SUNDAY AFTERNOON: MOTORING BMW 330e By Tristan Young I N THE world of the company car park, the BMW 3-Series is so fundamental it is almost a unit of currency. Now BMW is about to add a plug-in hybrid version that not only boasts an average fuel economy figure of 148mpg, but also a tiny five per cent company car taxation making it possibly the only sensible choice for those business drivers. As you would expect, the company car driver is the core audience for this new 330e, specifically the driver who can make do with four doors and a small boot – because the hybrid BMW is only available as a saloon and the hybrid tech robs a large amount of boot space. These limitations mean BMW has put a conservative sales prediction for the hybrid 330e of 1,900 a year compared to its 23,000 annual sales of 3-Series saloons. By comparison, the Mercedes C-Class hybrid sold 2,075 in 2015 in less than a year. The 330e will blend right in too, because it looks just like every other 3-Series that’s on the road. The only differences are the “e” on the end of the name badge and small eDrive badges on the rear pillar. And for the eagle-eyed there’s an additional “fuel” filler flap on the front passenger side wheelarch for the car’s charge point. This similarity with other 3-Series is no bad thing as the regular car looks purposeful and sleek. Despite a 330 name though, it isn’t a 3.0-litre. The petrol engine is the same 2.0-litre 184bhp unit that’s found in the 320i. It’s a turbo- charged four-cylinder that’s smooth and free-revving with a sporty engine note if you do use the entire rev-range. With the addition of the electric motor, the car’s total power is actually 252bhp. That makes for a quick car, though. The 0 to 60mph time is 6.1 seconds and top speed is a healthy 140mph. But these figures alone don’t accurately convey the car’s performance well enough. Because the electric motor can deliver all of its shove instantly, the car feels particularly quick as soon the accelerator is shoved towards the carpet. The electric motor can also be used to propel the car in pure electric mode, as well as being used in tandem with the petrol engine. The official fuel figure is 148.7mpg but the car has a claimed electric range of 25 miles when fully charged (which takes six hours from a home socket). So if your journeys are short you may rarely visit a petrol station. The down- side to the pure electric mode is that the car is slower but not as slow as you think. Regular town driving is easy and even a steady motorway cruise is possible. In fact the driving experience itself is near identical to any other BMW 3-Series. That’s to say the steering is perfectly weighted and gives good feedback about what’s going on at the front wheels. It’s the kind of steering that makes driving a particular pleasure on an open sweeping road, yet it’s not too heavy in city use. The hybrid’s immediate and plentiful power- delivery adds to this experience. The ride comfort is firm but is just compliant enough to make the car fine for everyday motoring. Unlike some electric and plug-in cars though, there’s minimal battery charging energy recovery when you lift off the accelerator and coast. What you also gain in the 330e’s driving experience is near total silence in town driving, when the car uses its battery for most of the time. The interior of the 330e is also largely standard. The only additional button is one that selects the electric mode, toggling between pure electric, hybrid and “save”, which allows the driver to keep the battery topped up until needed – such as when entering a city. The biggest change is in the boot. The 330e suffers a hefty 110 litre drop in volume to 370 litres because of the battery and motor under the floor, although the rear seats do fold allowing for larger, longer loads. Finding hybrid rivals for the 330e is tricky. There is one obvious one: the Mercedes C350e plug-in hybrid, which is slightly quicker than the BMW but not quite as efficient and won’t go quite as far in full electric mode. It’s also more expensive. The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV has to be considered as a rival because it’s similarly priced and is also a family car run primarily by company car drivers, even if it doesn’t have a prestige badge. However, it does have the advantage of being a 4x4 in terms of grip and boot space. Given how well the regular BMW 3-Series sells though, it is hard to see why the 330e won’t sell like hot cakes. It’s much more efficient, faster and more refined yet only around £2,000 more expensive than a 320d, with the Government’s £2,500 plug-in grant. The fuel and tax costs should also outweigh the price hike. What’s more, the car drives just as well as any other BMW 3-Series which has to make it the pick of the 3-Series saloon range. Praise indeed. BmW 330eBy tristan young
In the world of the company car park, the BMW 3-Series is so fundamental it is almost a unit of currency. now BMW is about to add a plug-in hybrid version that not only boasts an average fuel economy figure of 148mpg, but also a tiny five per cent company car taxation making it possibly
the only sensible choice for those business drivers.As you would expect, the company car driver is the
core audience for this new 330e, specifically the driver who can make do with four doors and a small boot – because the hybrid BMW is only available as a saloon and the hybrid tech robs a large amount of boot space.
these limitations mean BMW has put a conservative sales prediction for the hybrid 330e of 1,900 a year compared to its 23,000 annual sales of 3-Series saloons. By comparison, the Mercedes C-Class hybrid sold 2,075 in 2015 in less than a year.
the 330e will blend right in too, because it looks just like every other 3-Series that’s on the road. the only differences are the “e” on the end of the name badge and small eDrive badges on the rear pillar. And for the eagle-eyed there’s an additional “fuel” filler flap on the front passenger side wheelarch for the car’s charge point.
this similarity with other 3-Series is no bad thing as the regular car looks purposeful and sleek. Despite a 330 name though, it isn’t a 3.0-litre. the petrol engine is the same 2.0-litre 184bhp unit that’s found in the 320i. It’s a turbo-charged four-cylinder that’s smooth and free-revving with a sporty engine note if you do use the entire rev-range. With the addition of the electric motor, the car’s total power is actually 252bhp. that makes for a quick car, though. the 0 to 60mph time is 6.1 seconds and top speed is a healthy 140mph.
But these figures alone don’t accurately convey the car’s performance well enough. Because the electric motor can deliver all of its shove instantly, the car feels particularly quick as soon the accelerator is shoved towards the carpet. the electric motor can also be used to propel the car in pure electric mode, as well as being used in tandem with the petrol engine. the official fuel
figure is 148.7mpg but the car has a claimed electric range of 25 miles when fully charged (which takes six hours from a home socket). So if your journeys are short you may rarely visit a petrol station. the down-side to the pure electric mode is that the car is slower but not as slow as you think. Regular town driving is easy and even a steady motorway cruise is possible.
In fact the driving experience itself is near identical to any other BMW 3-Series. that’s to say the steering is perfectly weighted and gives good feedback about what’s going on at the front wheels. It’s the kind of steering that makes driving a particular pleasure on an open sweeping road, yet it’s not too heavy in city use. the hybrid’s immediate and plentiful power-delivery adds to this experience.
the ride comfort is firm but is just compliant enough to make the car fine for everyday motoring. Unlike some electric and plug-in cars though, there’s minimal battery charging energy recovery when you lift off the accelerator and coast. What you also gain in the 330e’s driving experience is near total silence in town driving, when the car uses its battery for most of the time.
the interior of the 330e is also largely standard. the only additional button is one that selects the electric mode, toggling between pure electric, hybrid and “save”, which allows the driver to keep the battery topped up until needed – such as when entering a city.
the biggest change is in the boot. the 330e suffers a hefty 110 litre drop in volume to 370 litres because of the battery and motor under the floor, although the rear seats do fold allowing for larger, longer loads.
Finding hybrid rivals for the 330e is tricky. there is one obvious one: the Mercedes C350e plug-in hybrid, which is slightly quicker than the BMW but not quite as efficient and won’t go quite as far in full electric mode. It’s also more expensive. the Mitsubishi Outlander PheV has to be considered as a rival because it’s similarly priced and is also a family car run primarily by company car drivers, even if it doesn’t have a prestige badge. however, it does have the advantage of being a 4x4 in terms of grip and boot space.
Given how well the regular BMW 3-Series sells though, it is hard to see why the 330e won’t sell like hot cakes. It’s much more efficient, faster and more refined yet only around £2,000 more expensive than a 320d, with the Government’s £2,500 plug-in grant. the fuel and tax costs should also outweigh the price hike. What’s more, the car drives just as well as any other BMW 3-Series which has to make it the pick of the 3-Series saloon range. Praise indeed.
