This is a beta version of a codebook explaining and making available the data from European Parliament election studies run in almost all EU countries in 1989, 1994, 1999 and 2004. All these files are saved as Stata files. Also available is the trend file “trendEES.dta”. This contains ONLY the variables that appear in more than one EES study (year). There is also a combined EES file (“combinedEES.dta”). This contains ALL of the variables from all four EES studies. These are also made available as SPSS files, but there are no do-it-yourself SPSS command files that combine the basic EES files in any way. This trend dataset can also be created by placing the four individual EES data files (1989, 1994, 1999, 2004) in the same working directory as the Stata file “trendEES.do”, and then running that file. Obviously a user could adapt that script to produce a wider or narrower selection of variables within the trend file. A user can also generate this by running the script “trendEES.do. This puts such a file called (“combinedEES.dta”) in the working directory. There is another Stata file “Political Parties Link File.dta”. This contains within it unique party identifier codes in the Trend data et with corresponding codes from the CMP project, Euromanifestos, ZEUS codes from the Eurobarometer Trend File and PPMD dta file collected by Benoit and Laver. The EES trend file is currently in the `beta’ testing mode, so bugs are still most likely to be present. With feedback from `beta’ version testers these bugs can fixed quickly.

Note: Trend File is created by first identifying variables that appear in more than one EES study. Then all value codes are brought to the same common denominator of EES 2004 (as the latest EES study). Trending variables in EES 1989, EES 1994 and EES 1999 are then renamed along the common variable naming scheme used in EES 2004 codebook. Trending variables can be identified by a “t_” prefix in variable name. EES 2004 data file is similarly processed and also includes all codes that appear in any of the previous EES datasets but not in 2004 study. Individual EES files containing recoded and renamed trending variables alongside all other variables are then saved as temporary files (temp1989.dta, temp1994.dta, temp1999.dta, temp2004.dta). Using “temp2004.dta” as the base file, remaining temporary files are appended to it. This stacks all trending variables (that have the same names in all processed EES files). All other variables (non-trending variables) are also contained in the dataset produced alongside the trending variables. This dataset is named “combinedEES.dta”. Dropping all non-trending variables from this dataset results in “trendEES.dta”. These actions can be reproduced by running “trendEES.do”.

APPENDIX “PARTIES” SECTION A: This section relates to variables T_VAR029, T_VAR112, T_VAR113, T_VAR114, and T_VAR211. Variables T_VAR_PTV; T_VAR_LR; T_VAR_EU are discussed in next section.

Coding of Parties: General issues Five variables contain party names as response categories: • best party to deal with MIP T_VAR029 (EES2004: q02); • voting EP elections: T_VAR112 (EES2004: q10); • national elections: T_VAR113 (EES2004: q11); • vote intention: T_VAR114 (EES2004: q12); • party-constituent identification T_VAR211 (EES2004: q30). These variables are discussed in this section. In order to facilitate party identification through different EES each party is given a unique code. Comparative Manifestos Project (CMP) coding scheme (from “Mapping Policy Preferences 1” & “Mapping Policy Preferences 2”) was adopted as the basis. CMP dataset does not cover all the parties mentioned in EES. Where necessary CMP coding scheme was supplemented by Euromanifesto Project codes (which is itself based on “Mapping Policy Preferences 1”). “Mapping Policy Preferences 2” (an update of “Mapping Policy Preferences 1”) introduced some new party codes. Any coding conflicts between Euromanifesto project codes and “Mapping Policy Preferences 2” were decided in favour of “Mapping Policy Preferences 2” scheme. When no code exists for the party in either any of the editions of “Mapping Policy Preferences” or Euromanifesto Project coding scheme, the code was proposed based on general coding principles outlined by the CMP. Party code consists of five digits with the first two representing country code and the third and fourth digits reflect a tentative grouping of political parties and alliances into the following party families: 10 ECO Ecology parties 20 COM Communist parties 30 SOC Social democratic parties 40 LIB Liberal parties 50 CHR Christian democratic parties 60 CON Conservative parties 70 NAT Nationalist parties 80 AGR Agrarian parties 90 ETH Ethnic and regional parties 95 SIP Special issue parties 98 DIV Electoral alliances of diverse origin without dominant party 99 MI Missing information If more than one party of a specific family is represented in a country, this is reflected in the fifth digit of the party code. SECTION B: This section relates to variables T_VAR_PTV; T_VAR_LR; T_VAR_EU. Variables T_VAR029, T_VAR112, T_VAR113, T_VAR114, and T_VAR211are discussed in section above.

General issues: Three sets of variables directly relate to political parties, asking for responses regarding specific parties: • probability of voting for each party T_VAR_PTV_PARTY{1:58} (EES2004: q12_x); • left/right placement T_VAR_LR_PARTY{1:58} (EES2004: q14_x);

views about parties’ positions on European unification T_VAR_EU_PARTY{1:58} (EES2004: q22_x). These variables are discussed in this section. Placement of different parties on dimensions of interest (q12_x, q14_x, q22_x) is addressed in all EES studies by recording respondents’ opinions on a set of variables where each variable represents a party from the country-party list. The rank in country-party list corresponds to variable sequence. Italy has the highest number of parties appearing in EES datasets. There are a maximum number of 58 different party names mentioned in Italian party lists in EES 1989-2004. In EES Trend File a running code is given to parties in each country’s party list with the maximum number set at 58. Hence there are 58 variables that map PTVs, Left-Right positions, and EU Integration. All 58 variables are never used in any given party, but kept here for consistency purposes. Those variables that are not used contain missing values. The number can be reduced once `duplicate’ parties in each party-country list have been identified and corrected. SECTION C:

This section relates to the composite table of party names and codes

Party codes described in SECTION A and SECTION B of this Appendix have been combined in a table. First column of the table contains country names. Second column contains unique party codes as described in SECTION A above. For example, 53620 stands for Fianna Fail in Ireland. Several party codes that raise immediate questions of available duplicates are marked in “red”. Third column contains a running code for each party in a country that corresponds to the variable in PTVs, Left-Right positioning, and EU Integration. For example, Fianna Fail has the rank of 8. This means that responses placing Fianna Fail on the left-right dimension are recorded in “C_VAR_LR_PARTY8” variable. Another

example, France’s UDF has the rank of 37 (and unique code 31624). This means that responses about PTVs for France’s UDF are placed in “C_VAR_PTV_PARTY37”. Fourth column contains the party name as identified from either EES party lists or CMP/Euromanifestos dataset. Subsequent columns allow tracing party codings (and names) and also allow to link EES Trend File parties to external datasets like CMP dataset reported in “Mapping Policy Preferences 2” (column 5); Euromanifestos project (column 6); dataset of Benoit and Laver’s PARTY POLICY IN MODERN DEMOCRACIES (column 7); Eurobarometer Trend File ZEUS party codes (column 8); party names in corresponding EES files (columns 9-12). This section relates to variables T_VAR035 to T_VAR068, T_VAR071 to T_VAR104.

Placement of different news sources on dimensions of interest (EES2004: q05_x & q06_x) is addressed in all EES studies by recording respondents’ opinions on a set of variables where each variable represents a news outlet from the country-media list. The rank in country-media list corresponds to variable sequence. News sources that appear in both EES 2004 and EES 1999 were identified in media lists for both TV channels and newspapers and recoded in corresponding variables in the EES trend file. Party code, name, and corresponding variable for two sets of questions (EES2004: q05_x & q06_x) are provided in the table below. TV list in France, Greece, Sweden, and Newspaper list in Greece, Spain, Sweden follow alternative coding structure that at this point couldn't be reconciled with EES1999.
