Migration to Energy.gov
• Office websites migrating by March 31, 2014• Web content moving “as-is”
– Topical reorganization after migration– Universal EERE top navigation.
• Currently building the EERE home page in energy.gov• EERE Education and Energy Basics are migrating first• Each site will have a migration checklist that includes:
– Content discussion– Technical discovery– Pre-migration technical setup– Content migration– Testing, validation, and quality control– Review, approval, and signoff steps– Pre-release cleanup and preparation, go-live procedures.
4
Migration to Energy.gov
• Migration Site Tracker to log every site and its details• As each site is migrated, its content maintenance personnel will
be trained in the Drupal CMS – please send an email to Billie Bates to get into the training queue.
5
Identifying Your ROT Website Content
• ROT refers to redundant, outdated, and trivial content– Redundant content repeats the same idea in multiple locations.– Outdated content consists of materials that are no longer in use or are
out-of-date.– Trivial content is of little importance or value and is considered
insignificant to the overall purpose of your website.• Why remove ROT content?
– It gets in the way of the really important content.– It clutters up search engine results.– It erodes the credibility of your content.– It makes updating sites time-consuming and burdensome.– It increases maintenance costs.
6
Identifying Your ROT Website Content
• The more you eliminate before migration…– The lower the migration cost.– The easier it will be to re-architect topically.
• Each site is different, and we’ll work with site owners individually to help identify ROT content.
• Some criteria for consideration include:– Pages with low page views or files with low download statistics – Content that isn’t tied to a user task or EERE/office goal– Content that hasn’t been updated in a while (18+ months)– Conferences, news, and events information – Non-Web page formats (e.g. PDF, PowerPoint, Excel, Word, etc. files).
7
“Share” Statistics Now Available in Google Analytics
• Starting June 1, “Share” stats are available in your EERE Google Analytics reports• Content > Events > Top Events > AddThis > Share Links.

Responsive GovDelivery Templates
We’re updating all of the EERE templates to function better on mobile and tablet devices. • Replacing the header graphics with text on a solid color
background. • Enlarging the default fonts to 14px for body text and 18-26px
for headlines.• Eliminating a set width for the main content area. Mobile
devices will size the table to fit the screen width.
9
Responsive GovDelivery Templates
10
Responsive GovDelivery Templates
Best practices• Go easy on the images. Apple’s iOS automatically enables images to
display by default, but many other mobile device platforms—like Android—turn images off by default.
• Streamline content for mobile. Be as concise as possible. Consider call to action buttons that are a minimum of 45px wide or tall.
• Place plenty of space between links so that they're easy to touch on a mobile device.
• Use a single-column layout. Other newsEERE is reviewing GovDelivery’s capabilities and costs to evaluate integration of email capabilities with Salesforce.
11
Communications Standards Tip
Electronic newsletters• Follow EERE website styles when formatting. • Keep the coding simple; some more modern style methods
may not work in all email clients. • Test the template designs in as many email clients as possible
before sending to your list. • Include easy-to-use unsubscribe instructions in the message
footer. • Follow DOE's cyber security guidelines, if you’re using a
system outside of GovDelivery.
