Members of KPBS leadership provided a welcome, tour of the station, and discussion to 60+ students from High Tech High Mesa. Discussion topics included: General podcast overview; Production demonstration - How to make a podcast; Interview tactics - How to interview people for podcasts.

High Tech High Mesa is the initiator. Staff participants: Development & Campaign Coordinator Elmer Jacobo; Director of Programming John Decker; Director of Development Alex Kim; GM Tom Karlo.

3 2/12/20 Participation in Career Fair at O'Farrell Charter School.

Tabled at career fair for 150+ K-5 students. The goal of the fair was to help increase exposure of diverse careers and professions to students. KPBS staff who participate in the fair shared information about the station and our respective career journeys.

O'Farrell Charter School is the initiator. Staff participants: Education reporter Joe Hong; Sales Executive Lisa Helmke; Training & Employee Engagement Specialist Consuela Steward.

4 5/1/20 SDSU Journalism Media Studies department student portfolio judging.

Participants were asked to judge student portfolios for the SDSU JMS 490 internship class. Judging took place virtually; a question form was used to grade each students’ website portfolio.

Professor Laura Castañeda, SDSU JMS Internship Coordinator and JMS Professor Christie Ritter are the initiators. Staff participant: Communications Manager Claudine Casillas.

5 5/7/20 Presentation to high school journalism class.

Executive Producer Natalie Walsh spoke virtually to the journalism class at Westview High School in the Poway Unified School District. The focus was how newsrooms have adapted under the coronavirus.

KPBS Training & Employee Engagement specialist Consuela Steward along with lead educators from the Museum of Man presented on the history behind racial stereotypes and microaggressions that stem from racial biases deeply rooted in our society and culture. The presentation also took a look at how these biases can lead to unintended discrimination.

KPBS is the initiator. All KPBS staff were invited to attend.

4 6/24/20 Participation in PRSA San Diego’s Tips for Engaging with the Media During Uncertain Times.

KPBS Editor Joe Guerin joined a panel of local news reporters, editors and producer for this webinar for PR professionals. The focus was on the ongoing pandemic and social unrest and, “when and how we (PR professionals) should be engaging during this global crisis, how we can provide real value to reporters and their readers/viewers, and when it's OK to reach out with non-front page news.”

John Frederick Reeves Scholarship opportunity for PT assistant SDSU students working at KPBS.

With the help of the SDSU scholarship office, and in conjunction with The Campanile Foundation, KPBS selected two SDSU PT Assistant students currently working at KPBS to receive the John Frederick Reeves Scholarship. All KPBS student employees who met our criteria were eligible to apply. In addition to meeting criteria, applicants must exhibit passion for working in Public Media. Seven KPBS PT Assistant/SDSU students applied. Each scholarship recipient was awarded $5,000 for tuition or any college related expenses for the 2020-2021 school year.

KPBS, SDSU Scholarship Office and The Campanile Foundation are the initiators. Staff Participants: Training & Employee Engagement Specialist Consuela Steward and members of KPBS Management Council were involved in the selection process. KPBS selected two current PT assistant SDSU students as scholarship recipients.

Assistant News Producer Intern for KPBS Evening Edition (Penner Fellow).

The Penner Fellow is employed with KPBS for a six-months to one-year appointment as an assistant producer intern for KPBS Evening Edition. The fellow works closely with the entire news team to create broadcast-worthy content focused on local issues important to the San Diego region. The position is responsible for helping increase quality of programming in our TV broadcast that focus on local issues and stories that directly impact the lives of San Diegans.

KPBS is the initiator. An SDSU journalism student was selected as the Penner Fellow. Staff Participants: Executive Producer Natalie Walsh and Director of People & Culture Brenda Foster.

2 Summer 2019 Fall 2019; Spring 2020

Established as an internship site for SDSU student interns interested in careers in broadcasting, video, and audio production.

KPBS was selected as an internship site for SDSU students in the Performing Arts department, which encompasses Music, Dance, Theatre, TV, Film, Recording Arts and Music/Entrepreneurship. KPBS took in four interns: two during summer 2019, one during fall 2019, and one during spring 2020. Interns are paid and worked approximately 50 hours during the semesters to earn college credit after completion.

SDSU TFM department is the initiator. Staff Participants: Production Services Manager Audric Thompson and Former Director of Production Ena Newell.

3 Jan 7 – 31, 2020

Offered mentorship opportunity for a High Tech High student interested in journalism.

The student mentee met with a reporter for a three-week period to learn reporting skills and develop a project to help KPBS solve a problem or address an area of interest for KPBS. Upon completion, the mentor attended the mentee’s class presentation outlining the project.
