On January 28, Europe commemorates Convention 108 with the annual Data Privacy Day. On this day in 1981, the treaty provided a watershed moment when it was opened for signing in Strasbourg. Convention 108 represented the first binding international instrument to protect citizens against abuse from the collection and processing of personal data.

37 years later the world is a very different place and on May 25 a new milestone in the history of data privacy will be reached, when the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) replaces the existing Data Protection Directive 95/46/EC. GDPR aims to provide greater protection to all EU citizens, by providing tighter rules governing how personal data is managed by organisations.

However, this is far from the end of the story, with the new Regulation on Privacy and Electronic Communication. The planned intention was to coincide with the GDPR deadline, however it is still going through the EU legislative process.

Throughout 2018, EEMA will continue to keep you abreast of all the latest developments relating to issues of data privacy, identity and trust.

Jon Shamah, EEMA Chair
