 Jonathan Edwards

2 Corinthians 3 18 But we all with open

face beholding as in a Glass the Glory of the

Lord are Changed into the same Image from Glory

to Glory. even as by the spirit of the Lord.

The Apostle had said in the 6 verse by way of Com-

mendation of his office that they were mi nisters of

the New Testament not of the Letter but of the spirit

for the Letter killeth but the spirit Giveth life.

The Old testament dispe nsation was of the Lette r. as

meer Lett ers and sounds are Useless and Good for nothing

any otherwise than as they Res Relate to Ideas or sen

thoughts or the sense of the mind so the Old testament

dispensation was unprofitable only as it Refer'd to t he

spirit of which the New testament was a ministra

tion of. Now in the 17 verse t he verse Immediately

foregoing the text the apostle Referring to What he

had said in the 6 verse. tells us the Lord is th at spi-

rit that is Jesus X is th e spiritual scope and mean

ing of the all the Legal dispensation. he was the

spirit and soul of all those dark shadows and types

and numerous Ceremonies that were then Commanded

and Where the spirit of the Lord is there is liberty. it marginal

veil but we have liber ty to see with Op en face as

in Our t ext and so are Changed into t he same Image

from Glory to Glory. but it i even as by the spirit of

the Lord still the same spirit th at had been spoken

of before. The Words are so in t he Original that the y

may be translated two ways Renderd either th us

even by the Lord the spirit that is by the X that

spirit that had been spoken of in the foregoing verse or

as it is Render'd by the spirit of the Lord. but Let in

whichway soever it be Renderd it Comes t o the same

thing for if it be Renderd that X the spirit doth it

yet he doth it by the holy Ghost his spirit

we Observed two doctrines from the

 verse

______________________________________________________

Doc I. That believers have such a sight of the

Glory of X as Revealed in the Gospel as Changes 'em

into a likeness to the same Glory.

Doc II. That tis ye work of the spirit of X only to

Give a true sight of X and to make like to X.

we have already spoken to the former we shall now marginal

by the help of God say something to the Latter

Tis Evident by the words of the text that both these works

are ascribed to the spirit of X. tis Evident it is

__________________________________________________________

I tis the spirit of X that is the Immediate teacher

and Instructor to Give a true sight of X. tis Evident

this is Intended in the words of the text by the foregoing

words. where the spirit of the Lord is there is liberty

that is tis the spirit that Gives Liberty to behold with

Open face as it is explaind in the text.

This spirit of X is the Only Immediate Instructor of the

souls of men in spiritual knowledge and Understanding

X is the Great teacher. we are the disciples of X but he

teaches by his spirit X is the L uminary he is as the sun

and the morning star but the spirit of X is as the Rays

an as the very light it self the sun dont Enlighten us

Immediately but by his beams tis t he Rays of the sun

that are sent forth that do Immediately Enlighten tis

are the Rays by which it shines into them. the Instruc-

tions that and teachings that are Given us are Xs he is

the Great Prophet and teacher sent from God but the

spirit of X Opens the Unde rstanding to Recieve his In-

structions . 1 Corinthians 10 2 Chap. 10. 11. 12. marginal

for the spirit searcheth all th ings ------------------

______________________

The spirit of God dont only teach men the knowledge of X

by Inspiring Indi Inspiring the prophets and Apostles and

Inditing the scriptures but by Immediate Application

to the soul of the believer see 1 Joh 2 27 But the A-

nointing which Ye h ave Recieved of him Abideth in you

and ye need not t hat any man teach You But as the same

Anointing teacheth you all things and is tru th and is no

lie by the Anointing is doubtless meant the Pouring out of the

holy Ghost upon the soul. Anointing is a Common ei Representa

tion of appli the Application of the holy Ghost in scripture

Now this Cant be meant of teaching by Inditing the scripture

but it is by an Immediate application of the holy Ghost that

is Represented by anointing the soul ex .

This spiritual teaching is a work of mighty power upon t he

of the world 2 Cor 4. 6 for God Who Commanded the light

to shine out of darkness hath shined in our hearts Giving

the light of the knowledge of the Glory of God in the

face of Jesus X

Tis a Work of Creation like Givi Creating of Eyes to marginal

II Tha Tis the spirit of Jesus X that makes like to Jesus

X we have hear'd under the former doctrine t hat

true believers have an Image of the Glory and excellen-

cy of Jesus X upon their souls and that the sight t hey have

of the Glory of X Changes them into this likeness th ey

have a transforming sight of the Glory of X. But now in

this doctrine we are taught that this is done by the spirit

of that person whose Glory is seen tis X only that makes

men like to himsel f by his sp own spirit Gho and he doth

in his way by Giving a sight of himself by Revealing

himself to the soul.

Tis the spirit of X that makes this Great Change in the marginal

soul that Gives a new nature that Creates an the man

the second time . Joh 3. 5. 6 verily verily I say Unto

thee except a man be born of water and the spirit he Can-

not Enter into th e kingdom of God that Which is born of

the flesh is flesh and that Which is born of the spirit

is spirit. and Titus 3. 5 Not by Works of Righteousness

which we had have done But According to his mercy

he saved us by the Washing of Regeneration and Renew-

ing of the holy Ghost Which he shed on us abundantly

through Jesus X our saviour.

The assimilating of the work of assimilating unto X or

making like to him is begun by the spirit of X in Regene-

ration in the New Creation. as we Read the spi rit of God

moved upon the face of the unformed world in the first

Creation and brought it into a beautifull Order so the

spirit of God X moves upon the hearts of men that are na-

turally as dark and Ev unformed to be work in it divine

beauty and Excellency.

so this work is Carried on in sanctification still by the spirit

of esus the Whole of work of sanctification both in the

beginning and progress of it is Carried on by the spirit of

X. so the spirit of X is said to dwell in t hem Rom 8 9

But ye Are not in the flesh but in the spirit if so be that

the spirit of God dwell in You Now if any man have not

the spirit of X he i s none of his. so they are said to live marginal

by the spirit Gal 5 25

Tis the spirit of X that Enables to be like makes like X in the

life and Conversation When t hey walk in the Right way tis he

that Leads them they are said to walk in the spirit in the

same Galatians 5. 25 16. 25.

And Indeed holiness in the saints seems to be nothing else

but the spirit of Jesus X living and acting in the sa them

that is their principle of holiness X Jesus has Recieved

the spirit wit hout measure and he Gives of that spirit

which he Recieves to those that Are his and that is his

his Grace. the Indwelling of that is a living principle

of holy fear, and love and Joy. and disposes to humility

to meekness and acts of love to an excellent and Amiable

behaviour.

There may be these two Reasons Given why no

Creature works this work upon the he arts of men. marginal

1 Tis too Great an honour for Any Creature. tis a be-

Peculiar honour and Glory that belongs to God to be

the Author of Grace in the soul. The Image of God in

the soul is th e most beautifull of all the works of

Creation. there is no work so excellent as that the sun

moon and stars are Glorious works but not so Glorious

as Gods spiritual Image. mens bodies are a Curious Pieces

of workmanship far excelling all works of art as human

Invention but Gods Grace in the soul is far a far more excel

lent work yea tis a more excellen beautifull and Glorious

work than the souls of man themselve it self with all its

natural Powers and faculties which Yet is a far more Glorious

work than the their bodies. but this is not so excellent

as the Grace of God in the soul. for this Grace of God is

the Image of his own divine beauty and what Can be more

excellent than that doubtless this is t he Pearl and dia-

dem of the Whole Creation. Paradise it self is as to

the outward Glories of it is not so Glorious a work as the

Grace of God in mens heart. Therefore doubtless it is

too Great an honour to Any Creature to be the au whe

would it not be so Great an honour for a Creature to be

the Author of sun moon and stars and all the Rest of marginal

the Creation as to be the author of true Grace and holi-

ness. tis unreasonable to suppose that God would

Retain to himself only the Lesser honour of Creating

the Inferiour an works and Give the Greater honour

of Creating the most excellent work of all to t ha

Creature any Creatures much Less t o such a little

abject miserable Creature as fallen man . No this is

an honour that God Reserves only for his son beloved

son to work by his own spirit.

Yea the Grace of God in mens heart Can hardly be Called

a Creature tis Gods Own beauty and excellency that is

Uncreated and Eternal Which in is not properly made

but Communicated. it is as we said before the spirit

it is God himself. therefore they that are full of Grace

are full of God X they ar full of God Ephes 3 17 18

being Rooted and Grounded in love may be able to Compre-

hend with all saints what is the Len gth Breadth and Length

Length and depth and height and to know the love of X which

2. Tis beyond their Power Indeed what has been said already

Evidences it its being if it be so excellent a work the most

excellent of all works of Creation and in st rictness more

than a work of Creation being a Communication of God him

self doubtless tis beyond th e Power of any Creature to be

before we proceed t o the Application it may marginal

be Proper to Answer to An Enquiry. It

Enq. it may be Enquired Why'e the spirit of God is

here Called the spirit of X.

Ans. 1 because the holy Ghost Proceeds both from the

Father and the son t he son is begotten only of the Fa

ther but the holy Ghost Proceeds from both. so he some-

times is Called the spirit of the Father math 10 20

so he is often Called the spirit of X as Rom 8 9. & Gal

4 . 6 . & Philip 1. 19 . That Pure water of River of

water of Life we Read of 22 of Revelation 1 verse

is the holy Ghost But t hat proceeds out of the throne

Rivers of living waters But he spoke of the spirit

Which they that beli eve on him should Recieve

for the holy Ghost was not yet Given for because that

Jesus was not Yet Glorified .

______________________________________________________

2 Another Reason Why he is Called the spirit of X is

because that in this work of Enlightening and Changing

mens hearts as subservient to X and his messenger. X

the holy Ghost in all his Gracious operations upon men s

hearts in En Converting & sanctifying Quickening

& strengthening and Comforting is the m essenger of

Jesus X Joh 15 26 But When the Comfort er is Come

Whom I will send from the Father even the spiri t of

truth Which Proceedeth from the Father he shall testi -

fy of me. and 16. 7 It is expedient for You that I Go

Away for if I Go not away the Comforter wil l not Come

but If I depart I will send him unto you.

so All that the holy Ghost does amon upon the he arts

of men he does as subservient as Carrying on his work

and Applying his Redemption. Redeeming of men

is the work that X has Undertaken and he so Carries

it on by the h oly spirit Joh 16 14 he shall Glo-

rifie me. for he shall Recieve of mine and shall show marginal

it unto You. For these Reasons he is Called the spirit

because he is indeed as his spirit he proceeds from him

and because in all his work towards men he acts as

his spirit. marginal

all Grace of all spiritual light and excellency in

that all it is all wrought by his spirit. if Grace be

an excellent thing the most excellent of all things that

are to be seen in the whole Creation then doubtless he

that is the fountain of it is an excellent Person. There

love to spiritual beauty we shall love him from

whom who is the spring head of it all if we love

That Jesus X is the fountain of Grace of it argues

that he has all Grace on himself when we Recieve Grace marginal

we do bu from him we do but Recieve of his fullness

their Necessity necessities there is need of no more it

3. The Meekness and humility of Jesus X this shows

the excellency of Xs temper and disposition to see one that

is a divine person that so meek and patient and Lowly does

wonderfully set forth the beauty of Jesus and the ex-

cellency of his spirit. tis a Ravishing sight to see In-

finite Power and so Great meekness and humi lity Joind

together and Infini so Great majesty and so Great meek

meekness Joind in the same person meeting in the

same person.

this has a tendency Greatly to Embolden the soul to Come
