EduShells handle provides a safe way for children to carry their school iPad

EduPort provides a safe way for children to charge their ipad without stopping class, as it clips between grouped desks.

The EduShell and EduPort system allows children to work with their iPad at an ergonomic angle, reducing the chance of accidental breakage.

usabilityIn 3 to 5 years, it can be expected that a large portion of schools will have implemented iPad systems, or will be planning to do so. This new system of learning requires the support of ergonomic physical infrastructure, to ensure physically healthy use, environmentally friendly use, and effective use in a learning environment.

EduShell and EduPort aim to tailor iPads to a school environment, in a way that is ergonomically, socially and ecologically more efficient.

EduShellEduShell is a iPad case designed for primary school children. The case protects students’ iPads from drops, spills, and everyday rough treatment from children. Its lid has a second function as stand, that holds the iPad at an ergonomically comfortable and efficient angle, for better posture and less strain.EduPortThis is an accompaniment for a classroom implemented with EduShells and iPads. It is designed to clip to the side of a school desk, in a group of desks, providing a safe way to charge iPads without stopping class

MANY TECHNOLOGIES ARE CURRENTLY AVAILABLE TO SCHOOLS TO REPLACE PAPER BASED LEARNING. DESPITE THIS, PAPER IS STILL USED.TECHNOLOGIES SUCH AS iPADS ARE BEING ADOPTED BY SCHOOLS AS COST EFFECTIVE AND EFFICIENT LEARNING TOOLS, THAT HAVE THE ABILITY TO REPLACE PAPER. UNFORTUNATELY, THE IPAD HAS NOT BEEN DESIGNED WITH CHILDREN IN MIND, DUE TO THE FRAGILITY AND

ADULT ERGONOMIC CONSIDERATIONS OF THE IPAD DESIGN, SOME SCHOOLS AND PARENTS ARE HESITANT TO IMPLEMENT IPAD PROGRAMS, AND SOME SCHOOLS WITH iPADS ARE FINDING THAT FREQUENT BREAKAGES ARE USUAL. REPLACING THE IPAD WITH A SIMILAR DEVICE DESIGNED FOR CHILDREN WOULD MEAN HIGH ENVIRONMENTAL AND ECONOMIC COSTS FOR SCHOOLS. I PROPOSE THAT ACCESSORIES TO ADAPT iPADS TO SCHOOL ENVIRONMENTS ARE NECESSARY.

sustainabilityREDUCING PAPER THROUGH DISEMBODIMENTEduShell aims to reduce paper use in schools by enabling digital learning. Currently, the use of iPads in place of paper in a learning environment is difficult, as iPads run the risk of being broken, or not charged fully, by young children.

PREVENTING UNTIMELY iPAD BREAKAGE & REPLACEMENTMany parents and teachers cringe when considering young children taking care of expensive equipment, such as iPads. Although iPads in schools usually have insurance for accidental damage, the impact of repairs or replacement on the environment also need to be avoided.

USES EXISTING PRODUCTSAs many schools will already have iPad schemes in place in 3 to 5 years, instead of replacing these already manufactured products with new products, I believe it is important to increase the lifetime of the existing products.

MODULARThe outer case of EduShell is designed to crack before the iPad does. The modular design means that in this scenario, the clear outer case can be replaced without unnecessarily replacing the inner felt padding sheath. In addition to this, no glues are used for easy disassembly and recycling at end of life.

MATERIALSThe Outer Casings for both the Edu Case and EduPort are made from Eastman Provista copolymer, which is a tough and clear, but recyclable and nontoxic, even if accidently incinerated at end of life. The Water-tight Swing Plugs, Seals, Grips and Flex-Hinges are moulded from Natural Gum Rubber, to reduce use of nonrenewable resources. The felt padding sheath is made from bamboo fibre, and is coloured with vege inks, so is biodegradable and derived from renewable resources.

aesthetics and functionality EDUSHELLHANDLE GRIPChildren often must carry several items to and from school, for example, books, lunch bags, art projects. To ensure that children will not accidently drop and damage their iPad, when juggling these items, a handle with natural rubber grips is included in the design of the EduShell. The diameter of the handle is specifically designed for child sized hands.

LID TILT FUNCTIONEduShells lid has a two folding rubber hinges. This allows the user to fold the lid backwards and under the case, and click the lid into place on the underside. This creates a wedge like angle of 12 degrees, allowing the user to view the screen and type comfortably, without hunching over the device. The lid also protects the screen from scratches and smashes when closed, although a screen protector should also be applied.

SPILL PROOFINGThe iPad is safe from liquids, as button access holes in the case are covered with natural rubber plugs, and a seal around the screen. The plugs are attached to the case on pivot points, so cannot be lost. The cameras (both front and back) are protected by the outer casing.

INSERTING THE iPADThe iPad is easily inserted and removed. First, it is slipped into the flexible bamboo felt sheath. This is then inserted into the outer casing, the two halves of which, click into place.

BAMBOO FELT INSERTThis component is available in several bright, kid friendly colours. Due to its flexibility, it may be able to be used with any new iPad versions with slight facade design changes. If any major iPad facade design changes occur, new Bamboo Felt inserts may be manufactured that fit inside the existing Outer Casing, to avoid unnecessarily waste of the outer layer.

EDUPORTCLIPThe port clips to the side of desks of most thicknesses, similarly to that of a tablecloth clip.

SLIDES IN BETWEEN DESKSAs school desks are often set out in groups, the port is able to be sandwiched between a group of desks, so it can be accessed by multiple students.

PLUGSThe port is also spill proofed, as it too has plugs that pivot on points

FELTINGLitrax’s bamboo processing method, which is considered more sustainable than traditional methods as it does not use harmful chemicals, should be used to create the bamboo felt. Bamboo is first crushed, then washed, and a natural,e to break down the outer walls. Vegetable Dyes (made from soy) is then added and the fibre is then spun. The spun fibre is then felted by matting, condensing and pressing into a mould. This process gives a material that is very durable, and high quality.

INJECTION MOULDED PARTSThe outer shell is colpolymerised during manufacture to strengthen and clarify the material. The Natural rubber used is vulcanized, to make it stronger and stop it from perishing. Both of these processes, although environmentally unsound, allow the product to have a longer life span, and prevent premature replacement and end of life. These materials are then injection moulded in parts, and joined together with heat.

GLUELESS JOINTSTo avoid the use of glues, the parts of the EduShell use snap joints to join together. The EduPort uses screws and snap joints.
