Theme 1: People around youAims: Presentation of own family Personal information, favorite activities Say whether you have many relatives: who your relatives are and what they do. Presentation of own family My name is Amina. I am in my last year at school. My family is not large, my mother, my father, my little brother and I. My brother takes after my mum, but people say I take after my dad. My father is an economist and he’s got his own business. He is a well-built, handsome man. His hair is curly and short. His eyes are hazel. He is a very serious man. He is always very busy. He’s nice and friendly. My mother is younger than my father. She works as a financier and she’s quite attractive. She’s got dark hair and a nice face with dark brown eyes. She is a very kind woman. She works five days a week and is off on Saturdays and Sundays. She is a wonderful housewife. She does everything about the house: she cooks, goes shopping, cleans the rooms. My brother Daulet is funny and a bit different. He is not very interested in fashion. He likes his jeans and old clothes. He is a slim and long-legged boy. He is sociable and reserved. Daulet is fond of computer games and rock music. He goes to school. At weekends we go to the country house where my grandparents live. They like to work in the kitchen garden. They are full of energy and my grandfather says

Theme 2: Daily routine Free timeAims: 1. Describing your working day and weekend 2. Read the text and discuss: What is your favourite time of the day? Why? The daily routine On week days the alarm-clock wakes me up and my working day begins. I usually get up at seven o’clock. I jump out of bed, go to the window and open it to let the fresh morning air in. Sometimes I am not so quick to leave my bed, and I bury my head under the pillows pretending not to hear the alarm-clock. But all the same, it is time to get up and I start getting ready for my working day. I make my bed and go to the bathroom where I clean my teeth, have a shower. Then I go to my room and dress for school. By that time my mother has cooked breakfast and I eat it. While I am having breakfast, I listen to the radio. Breakfast, as my parents say, must be the most substantial meal of the day. But usually neither my mother nor I have any time to cook it, so I just have a cup of tea or coffee and some sandwiches. I leave my house at twenty minutes to eight. It doesn’t take me long to get to school. I arrive to school at five minutes to eight. On my way to school I often meet my classmates and we go to school together.ПОӘК 042-.X.I. XX/01-

Our lessons start at eight. We usually have five or six eight lessons a day. It is not easy to study at our school, but it is reputed to be the best in our region. I never go home right after school. Three times a week I train in the gym and on Wednesday we have an optional class in English, which I never miss. I have a lot of work to do at home every day. It usually takes me about three hours to get ready for the next working day. Sometimes in the evening my friends come to my place and we talk or play; sometimes we go for a walk, but not very often. I go to my room and read a little before I go to sleep.Tasks and questions:II. Work in pairs. When do you go to English class? When do you do your homework? When do you usually see your friends? What’s your favourite day of the week?III. Make up sentences: Model: I go to the cinema twice a week. a) go to hairdresser, to play chess, to watch TV, to play computer games, to go to town park, to go to the swimming-pool, to listen to music, to go shopping, to have a shower, to read newspapers, to relax. b) never, once a week, hardly ever, always, sometimes, ever, twice a week, everyday, often, seldom, once a month.

Text 2 I. Read and discuss about how you spend your free time. My free time There’s plenty to do after school hours, particularly sport which I enjoy most. My favourite sport is football. Almost all my friends are here. We train hard and we play for the school and in various regional youth tournaments. After school I usually spend my free time at home helping my mother about the house or doing domestic chores. In winter I enjoy skiing or skating. If the weather is nasty it’s good to stay at home and watch TV or read books, newspapers or play the computer games. I spend a considerable time playing computer games. In summer I am fond of swimming, lying in the sun, walking in the park or in the forest. I enjoy fresh air walking in the forest. In spring it’s pleasant to be out of doors. I think, it’s common with most young people to spend some time outdoors. Street life is important for us. We meet somewhere in streets and talk and then go to town centre to do window shopping and ‘see what’s going on’. We enjoy disco-dancing on week-ends. The most of young people like going to the theatre or to a cinema.

Some of my friends use some of their free time to earn money by working in different places. Some of them wash cars for people; others do a part-time job for shops and cafes. As for me I earn my pocket money washing cars in the evenings. I’ve usually got enough to do the things I want. I can buy books or the records I want without asking the permission from my parents.Tasks and questions:

Some words about my house We live in a house. It is a big house. It is a two - storeyed brick building with a garden around it. On the ground floor we have a sitting room, a dining room, a study, a bathroom and a kitchen. The kitchen is rather big and comfortable. I help my mother to cook in the kitchen. There is a big refrigerator, a gas cooker, a kitchen table, some cupboards and a sink. When we have guests we have dinner in the dining room. After dinner we usually go to the sitting room. Our sitting room is very cosy. There isn’t much furniture in it. There is a sofa opposite the fireplace and two armchairs near it. There are some pictures on the walls. In the middle of the room there is a big carpet. We have a TV set in the corner. Father likes to watch TV in the evenings. Our bedrooms are upstairs, on the first floor. There are not many things in our parents’ bedroom. There are only two beds, a mirror, a dressing table and a wardrobe in it. There is a small carpet on the floor. My bedroom is small. There is a bed, a table, a chair and a wardrobe. There is a mirror on the wall near the wardrobe. There are two bookshelves over the bed. I like my bedroom very much. We have a bedroom for guests. It is rather small. Our bedrooms are cold. In winter we heat them because there is no central heating. Few people have central heating in their own house.

My father’s study room is downstairs. It faces the garden. It is light and spacious. There are a lot of books in the bookcases and a lot of paper on the desk. There are a few chairs in his room. Breakfast usually consists of a cup of tea, coffee or milk and bread and butter. Bread and butter are never missing at breakfast. For a change some people can have a boiled egg, bacon or porridge for breakfast. The second meal is called lunch. We have it at about 12 or 1 o’clock p.m.. Lunch is usually a cold meal with cold meat, fish and potatoes or vegetables. Then come coffee or tea with some sandwich or roll. Students, schoolchildren or people who work at factories, offices, plants etc. have a break for lunch which they take in dining-halls, refreshment rooms, etc. At about 4 or 5 o’ clock p.m. in the afternoon people have dinner. Dinner is a principal meal. To lay the table for dinner it is necessary to put a table-cloth on it, and three plates for each person – a deep plate, a shallow plate and a small plate for a cold dish. Then it is necessary to put the spoons and the knife to the right of the plate and the fork to the left. Dinner usually consists of three main courses. As a rule a cold dish opens the dinner such as, for example, some kind of a vegetable salad. Then comes some kind of soup. Then comes the second course which is usually meat or fish with potatoes or vegetables. Dessert comes to end up the meal. All kinds of fruit make a very good dessert. So at home we usually have a dinner of three or four courses.

Among them are meats, eggs, fish, and poultry. Some foods are better than others in helping keep bones, teeth, skin, and blood healthy. Among these foods are fruit, vegetables, milk, and cheese. There are certain sayings from long ago. “Fish is “brain” food”; people say it’s good for brain. They say carrots are good for eyes. Another saying is: “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”, - meaning that you will be healthy if you eat an apple a day. There are so many kinds of food – fast food, snacks, junk food – that it may be difficult to follow a healthy diet. Fresh fruit and vegetables are important for a healthy diet. Text 3 Read the text and answer the question: Can you share the opinion that the first impression we make depends on our clothes?

Clothes sense The first impression we make almost fully depends on what we wear and how we wear it. Manners and speech are noticed next and character only later. So to “present” yourself skillfully is a talent. It’s helpful to have some “clothes sense” to know and feel the types of things that are your style. Clothes add to your appearance, so to be a little bit different from the rest you should adapt the fashion to your personality. These days, many people don’t think about clothes very much. They just like

to becomfortable. When they go out to enjoy themselves, they can wear almost

anything. At theatres, cinemas and concerts they can put on what they like – from elegant

suits

Seasons and WeatherThere are four seasons in the year: winter, spring, summer and autumn. Each

of them lasts three months.Every new year begins in winter, on the first of January. This day is a

holiday in our country and people decorate their flats with New Year trees. In our country winter is usually a cold season. It often snows, the rivers and lakes are frozen over. The average temperature is about 15-20 degrees below zero. The most unpleasant thing about winter is that the sun sets early and rises late - especially in December and January. The days are short, the sky is often grey, nature is sleeping and sometimes it gets rather boring. But at the end of March the weather gets gradually milder. The sun shines more brightly. The days become longer, snow

begins melting. Spring comes and nature awakens after a long sleep of winter. All kinds of plants and flowers (snowdrops, tulips, primeroses, etc.) come out. The grass is amazingly fresh. I can’t help loving it. The birds return from the South and make their nests. They look so happy and cheerful. I feel happy with them too listening to their pleasant songs. The farmers begin the sowing campaign. They fertilize the soil, plough the fields, plant trees and vegetables. Everybody is automatically much happier in spring. You feel as if you were born anew.

Spring is followed by summer. The weather gets still warmer and sometimes it is very hot. The sky is blue and cloudless. But sometimes there are storms with thunder and lightning. The gardens are gay with flowers all summer months. The corn gets golden in the fields. In summer people spend much time in the open air. They find time to get to the forest, to swim in the river, to sunbathe. Summer is a vacation time. I like it very much, but my favourite season is

spring. As the great Russian poet A.S. Pushkin said: “Oh, summer, fine! I’d love you but for the heat, the mosquitos and flies”.

Autumn comes in September with the beginning of the school year. Early autumn is still the harvest time, the time when fruits and vegetables become ripe. It is also a very beautiful time of the year, when the weather is still warm and the leaves change their colour from green to yellow and red. Everything around is greenish-gold.

Late autumn is less beautiful. It gets colder, the days are shorter, in the morning it often freezes. Last leaves fall from trees and cover the ground. There’s much rain and fog. Birds fly away to warm countries. Low and heavy clouds hang in the sky. The landscape gets rather dull. Nature slowly falls asleep for winter.

In fact every season has its fine days and is pleasant in its own way. And it is not difficult to see this beauty.

Text 2 LondonLondon is the capital of Great Britain, its political, economic and

commercial centre. It is one of the largest cities in the world (together with Tokyo and New York) and the largest city in Europe. Its population is about 8 million.

London is situated on the river Thames. The city is very old. It has more than a 20-century-old history. Traditionally it is divided into several parts: the City, Westminster, the West End and the East End. They are very different from each other.

The city is the oldest part of London, its financial and business centre. Numerous banks, offices and firms are concentrated here, including the Bank of England, the Stock Exchange and the Old Bailey. Few people live in the City but over a million come to work here. Two masterpieces are situated within the City: St. Paul’s Cathedral was built in the 17th century by Christopher Wren. The tower of London was built in the 11th century. It was used as a fortress, a palace and a prison. Now it is a museum.

Westminster is the aristocratic official part of London. It includes Buckingham Palace where the Queen lives and the Houses of Parliament stretching for nearly 1000 feet along the north bank of the Thames.

The Clock tower of the Houses of Parliament is famous for its big hour bell, known as “Big Ben”. Westminster Abbey is the place where coronation of nearly all kings and queens has taken place. Many of them are buried here as well as some other famous people of the country (G. Chaucer, I. Newton, Ch. Dickens, T. Hardy, R. Kipling, etc.).

The West End is the richest and most beautiful part of London. It is a symbol of wealth and luxury. The best hotels, restaurants, shops, clubs, parks and houses are situated there. English aristocracy lives in this district. One of the busiest streets in the West End is Oxford Street. There are many various shops here which attract customers from different countries of the world.
