Informal assessment is a procedure for

obtaining information that can be used

to make judgments about children's

learning behavior and characteristics

or programs using means other than

standardized instruments, such as

observations, checklists, and portfolios.

INFORMAL ASSESSMENT

Mentoring is the development of a

support relationship between a new

teacher and an experienced one in

which the novice teacher will receive

basic information about the expectat-

ions and operations of the school and

the district, as well as advice,

guidance, and support on a range of

MENTORING

Cooperative learning is a form of active

learning where students work together

to perform specific tasks in a small

group allowing each student to bring

his or her strengths to the group effort.

The teacher then gives the students an

assignment, often helping them to divvy

up the work that needs to be done so

that each individual in the group has a

certain role to play with the end goal

being reached when every member

COOPERATIVE LEARNING

A charter school is a public school in

the sense that they are funded with

public monies just like other public

schools. However, they are not held to

some of the same laws, regulations,

and guidelines as regular public

schools. In exchange, they produce

certain results. Charter schools are a

different option for public school

students. Charter schools are often

started by administrators, teachers,

parents, etc. who feel constrained by

conventional public schools.

Standards are benchmarks used to

compare curriculum, instruction,

and student learning. The three

standards commonly referred to

today are: curriculum content,

performance, and opportunity to learn.

STANDARDS

Bloom's Taxonomy refers to a

hierarchy of question stems that

teachers use to guide their students

through the learning process. It was

developed in 1956 by Benjamin Bloom

and updated by further research in

the years since to include a knowledge

dimension and a cognitive dimension.

Inquiry Instruction is a student-

centered method of instruction

developed by John Dewey in the

early 20th Century based on the

concept of students learning by

problem-solving on their own instead

of by lecture or teacher

INQUIRY INSTRUCTION

Assessment describes any process or

activity used to collect information

about students’ knowledge, skills,

aptitude, or attitudes. It is part of the

instructional planning process

throughout instruction not just after

its completion. It is used to promote

learning as well as measuring student

ASSESSMENT

Portfolio Assessment involves the

assessment of a student product, a

Portfolio or planned collection of

student work, assembled and main-

tained by a student or teacher over

time for the purpose of documenting

PORTFOLIO ASSESSMENT

Lesson Plans are detailed descriptions

of individual lessons that teachers plan

to teach on a given day. They are

guides for instruction through the

LESSON PLANS

A Scoring Rubric details the desired

performance criteria for a task, the

levels of performance, and the grades

or points assigned to each level of

performance. It provides a consistent

and objective assessment while

providing students and teachers with

clear expectations for performance

and serve as the basis for feedback

SCORING RUBRIC

Tenure is the status conferred upon

teachers which guarantees them

continual employment until retirement

subject to the requirements of good

behavior, financial necessity, and, in

some instances good periodic

evaluations. It is a creation of statute

designed to maintain qualified and

permanent instructional personnel.

Assistive Technology are devices which

directly assists an individual with a

disability to increase, maintain, or

improve their capabilities. It also

includes services which aid in

selection, acquisition, and use of

ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY

Vouchers are scholarships or payment for education at a private or parochial K-12 school. They are another name for programs which offer parents the option to remove their children from failing public schools and enroll them in private schools. These programs

take the form of vouchers or outright cash for private schools, tax credits, tax deductions and contributions to tax deductible education accounts.Funding for vouchers comes from private and government sources. (About.com…)

VOUCHER

English Language Learner (ELL) used

refers to students who receiving

services of language assistance such as

English as a Second Language. It

includes students who were not born in

the United States and/or students

whose primary language is non-

English. The services provided to these

students are necessary because the

language barrier limits their capacity

ELL

A normal school is a school that is

created specifically to train teachers.

Typically, this terms is used to describe

a school that trains teachers out of high

school. Much of this training has been

taken over today within the traditional

NORMAL SCHOOL

Standardized Tests are tests, often

achievement ones, with carefully

designed procedure, questions and

administration. The tests measure the

performance of large numbers of

individuals to collect information about

individual children or adults, or to

assess the success of school wide

STANDARDIZED TESTING

Master Teachers are leaders who have mastered the

management of their classrooms and found a way to

accelerate learning for all their students. These educators are

exceptional communicators who have a strong connection

with their students. They recognize that the education process

is about much more than sharing content. It’s about creating

independent learners who have the critical thinking skills to

grow and thrive. These educators put their students first and

adapt the curriculum to their learners’ needs. Master

teachers hold their students to the highest expectations and

conduct regular progress monitoring, adjust their teaching

approach as needed, and empower their students to take

ownership of their education. Their mindset is one of

systematic problem solving and personal accountability.

These teachers are continually seeking out opportunities to

better themselves as professional educators.

MASTER TEACHER

Null Curriculum refers to things

Students learn but are not taught

because they are perceived as

controversial or because other topics

are seen as more relevant. Often

teachers find these untaught topics

either uncomfortable to talk about or

are subjects with which they are

unfamiliar. This lack of teaching is

used to limit strife and promote

NULL CURRICULUM

Direct Instruction is a teacher-centered

method that is used to convey

information. The methods used include

formal lecture, informal lecture, and

teacher-led discussion. The teacher

controls and directs the learning

DIRECT INSTRUCTION

EMERGENCY CERTIFICATEEmergency teacher certification

developed as an early attempt to

address critical teacher shortages. It is

a process whereby states grant

temporary teaching certificates to

individuals who do not meet the

ordinary certification criteria. During

this temporary certification period, a

teacher may work toward permanent

certification through the traditional
