If the Hartwick goal is student engagement, retention, and success, then we need to talk about how to create a learning environment that produces those results. 5. What is Educational Technology? Cognitive tools that engage and facilitate learning. Cognitive tools are based on cognitive psychology, how the learner processes, retains and then reuses knowledge. Examples of cognitive tools include, blogs, simulations, online discussions, web 2.0 applications 6. What is Student Centered Learning? Student-centered learning involves students resolving open-ended questions and working collaboratively researching and using real world data. Teacher-centered learning involves the teacher lecturing and providing information to the students. Asking questions for which the answer is already known Successful learning occurs when students have ownership over the materials, when they can reflect on what they are learning through discussion, and collaborate with peers on meaningful topics. 7. Online Discussion: Student Centered Learning 8. Why is Changing our Teaching Strategy Critical? We grew up in a period when our degrees demonstrated mastery of pedagogical instructional skills.
