Overview

SummaryAbout the Effects and Editing Educational Editions . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 5

Typical Classroom Components . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 6

About the Effects and Editing Educational EditionsThe Effects and Editing Educational Edition provides educational institutions with powerful tools for introducing students to the technology currently shaping the digital media industry.

Autodesk’s Effects applications (Inferno®, Flame and Flint®), are resolution-independent, visual effects applications for video post-production that provide clip formatting, pre-processing, and visual effects tools.

Autodesk’s Editing applications (Fire®, Smoke and Backdraft Conform®), are resolution-independent, non-linear digital editing systems for video post-production that offer a level of efficiency previously unknown in traditional editing suites.

Features and LimitationsThe Educational Edition offers two configurations: The “Instructor Station” (with complete AV I/O capabilities) and the “Student Station” (without AV I/O or Stone Direct storage array). On both configurations, the Flame and Smoke Educational Editions feature virtually the same functionality as their standard (i.e: non-Educational) versions.

The only limitations are hardware limitations on the Student Station configuration:

• No AV I/O hardware is present, therefore the workstation cannot perform video capture and output operations.

• Only 2 channels of analog audio can be output.

• No Stone Direct storage array is connected to the Educational Edition workstation, which instead stores its media on its internal Stone drives (4X 146GB SAS drives). Real-time playback performance is not guaranteed for internal Stone configurations.

Overview2

About the Instructor StationPrevious releases of the Educational Edition offered two configurations: The “Instructor station” (with complete AV I/O capabilities) and the “Student station” (without AV I/O or Stone Direct storage array).

With the 2007 SP5 release, the Educational Edition simply consists of a Student station configuration that can be connected to any certified configuration workstation. Existing Instructor stations can continue to operate under the same educational license as the Student station.

In the following sections, references to the Instructor Station can be interpreted as any standard 2007 release workstation configuration.

Typical Classroom ComponentsA typical classroom networked configuration includes a single Instructor Station and multiple Student Stations running on Linux. Instructor Stations are used for clip input and output, as well as media storage. Media is transferred between Instructor and Student Stations over a TCP/IP network using Autodesk Wire®, a proprietary networking solution for high-speed media transfers between workstations.

The classroom configuration is summarized in the following diagram.

Student Station — A workstation onto which a Educational Edition version (2007 SP5 or higher) of an Effects and Editing application is installed. More details on characteristics specific to the Student Station are provided in “Features and Limitations” on page 5.

Instructor Station — A workstation configured with any 2007 SP5 release (or higher) of Effects and Editing application. The Instructor Station is the only station that can bring in audio and video clips from outside sources such as an audio device or a VTR, and then output to tape. Students will import all audio and video clips from this station, or through restoring data archives over the network.

Stone Direct disk array — The Autodesk Stone® Direct disk array offers direct attached storage for audio and video material. Internal Stone storage is the only storage option for the Student Station.

Wire — Used for viewing and transferring material between Instructor and Student Stations over a TCP/IP network. All stations are connected via Gigabit Ethernet to ensure optimal performance.

Upgrading the SoftwareBetween major releases, services packs might be released from time to time. It is always recommended that you upgrade to the latest release of your Effects and Editing application (unless advised otherwise by the release notes). Customers with active support contracts, including owners of Educational systems, are notified when such service packs are released.

For detailed procedures on installing or upgrading your Effect and Editing application, see the Software Installation Guide for Linux Workstations for your major release.

Installing the Educational LicensesA special “EDU” license is required to run the Educational Edition version of your Effects and Editing application. The EDU license looks similar to the following example:

smokeEDU_x86_64_r_2007 discreet_l 2007.999

For detailed procedures on requesting and installing your licenses, see chapter 5, “Licensing and Starting the Application”, of the Software Installation Guide for Linux Workstations.

NOTE: The Software Installation Guide for Linux Workstations provides examples of licensing

procedures using generic license strings, but the procedures are identical for EDU licenses.

Internal Storage Configuration on the Student WorkstationThe Student Workstation is shipped with 4x 146GB internal SAS drives to be used as your main media storage volume. No action is required on your part in order to enable or connect the drives in the workstation. You must however setup the Stone filesystem on the internal storage drives (see next).

NOTE: Internal storage is not supported on the Instructor Station. The Instructor station

configuration requires a certified Stone Direct storage array.

Managing Internal StorageUse the sw_config utility to set up the Stone filesystem and manage the internal storage on the Student Station. For information about this utility, see the Stone and Wire Filesystem and Networking Guide. This document is included in PDF format with the application, in print format shipped with the workstation, and can also be downloaded from the documentation area of the Customer Support site, at www.autodesk.com/discreet-documentation.

You normally protect data on a Stone filesystem using software or hardware RAID. However, these features are not available for the Student Station because of the internal storage

configuration. Because disk failure may result in media loss, do the following to protect media while working on the Student Station:

• Do not store critical or long-term projects on the Student Station.

• Ensure media used in projects is backed up and can be recaptured, if necessary.

• Save projects and project archives to a network drive that is backed up on a regular basis.

Keyword Settings for Student StationsSpecify the following keyword settings in the software initialization configuration file.

For detailed procedures on setting keywords in the init.cfg software initialisation file, see the Configuration File Reference Guide for Linux Workstations.

Audio Settings for the Student StationSince the Student Station does not have dedicated AV I/O hardware adapters, audio settings in the application’s preferences must be configured to use the workstation onboard audio hardware.

Audio Settings in the Preferences MenuThe Student Station for both Flame and Smoke uses open source audio technology known as ALSA (Advanced Linux Sound Architecture). This features necessitates certain modifications to Audio settings in the Preferences menu.

The Smoke Audio Preferences menu on the Student Station appears as follows.

Keyword Option Setting

DVIRamp Commented out

VideoPreviewDevice Commented out

TabletDriver wacom Enabled

VTR Commented out

AudioDevice DVS Commented out

AudioDevice ALSA Enabled. This specifies that the software should use the ALSA audio library for audio I/O.

The Flame Audio Preferences menu on the Student Station appears as follows.

Monitor Sync Box and Audio DelaysThe Monitor Sync box and Audio Delays are disabled (greyed out) since the Student Station cannot connect to either a broadcast or high-resolution monitor.

AudioDesk SettingsWhile an unlimited number of tracks can be included in the Smoke timeline, the mixer input is limited to 32 tracks on the Student Stations. The Student Station can only output to two channels. Therefore, on the Student Station interface all input mixer channels are assigned to output M1 and M2.
