The Routledge InternationalHandbook of the Sociology ofEducationEdited by Michael W. Apple, University of Wisconsin,USA, Stephen J. Ball, University of London, UK andLuis Armand Gandin Federal University of Rio Grandedo Sul, Porto Alegre, Brazil

This collection brings together the work of a group of the world’sleading sociologists of education to explore and address key issues andconcerns within the discipline. The chapters draw upon theory andresearch to provide ‘state of the art’ accounts of contemporaryeducational processes, global trends, and changing and enduring formsof social conflict and social inequality. The topics which are addressedare of international relevance and significance.

In general terms two complexly interrelated agendas are discernible inall the heat and noise of education change of the past twenty-fiveyears. Both agendas directly connect with the economic discourses ofglobalisation and ‘responses’ to globalisation.

The first rests on a clear articulation and assertion by the state of itsrequirements of education - while the second gives at least theappearance of greater autonomy to educational institutions in thedelivery of those requirements.

We can see these two political agendas being played out in terms ofan ensemble of generic policies concerning parental choice andinstitutional competition, site-based autonomy, managerialism, performative steering, and curricula fundamentalism. Within all ofthese new identities, relationships, spatialities, flows and socialinequalities are developed. How has the sociology of educationresponded to these changes? The contributors to this Handbookexplore a range of critical issues which arise from this background of‘new times’ for education using a variety of theories and techniques, covering three key areas:

• Theories and Perspectives

• Social Processes and Practices

• Inequalities and Resistances.

The readers will gain a sense of the vibrancy and diversity of thesociology of education and the nature of ‘sociological work’ in thisfield. They will read the most recent work of leading scholars and seethe application of new theoretical ideas and concepts. The collectionwill be a primary resource for teaching and of major interest topracticing sociologists of education.

The Routledge InternationalHandbook of English, Language andLiteracy TeachingDominic Wyse, University of Cambridge UK,Richard Andrews, Institute of Education, University ofLondon, UK and James Hoffman, University of Texas atAustin, USA

The learning and teaching of English, language and literacy is the mainpriority for the education systems of many of the worldís nations. Since2000 a wave of initiatives has been launched with the aim of raisingstandards of literacy. In England the government-funded Rose Enquiryon the Teaching of Reading resulted in a renewed focus on theteaching of reading including, in 2007, changes to the statutorynational curriculum and the extensive guidance which is part of therenewed Primary National Strategy Framework for Literacy. In the USAthe work of the national reading panel was followed by the legislationof No Child Left Behind which was reauthorised in 2007 to includenew nationwide targets on literacy levels. In Australia the introductionto the report from the National Inquiry into the Teaching of Literacy in2005 articulated several key points that need addressing:

• the high priority given to literacy teaching

• the argument that nations’ economic futures are closelyaligned with literacy skills

• the emphasis on reading

• the renewed interest in the evidence base for educationalpolicy and practice.

In view of the fact that the teaching of English is seen as fundamentalto learning in all other areas it has been argued strongly that researchshould inform practice. However, the teaching of English is a complexarea that can potentially draw on many areas of research, and there isincreasing awareness of the possible limitations of evidence-based orevidence-informed policy and practice. In order to benefit from thewealth of international research of relevance to the teaching of Englishthere is a constant need for expert synthesis and interpretation so thatteaching can be informed by these insights.

The Routledge International Handbook of English, Language andLiteracy Teaching reviews international cutting-edge research within anappropriate theoretical context, drawing on historical perspectives. Thisbook focuses on three key areas: reading, writing, and language. It alsoaddresses issues that cut across these three modes of English. Inaddition, it looks at the teaching and learning of language from theperspectives of different countries and continents.

Handbook of Positive Psychologyin SchoolsEdited by Rich Gilman, Cincinatti Children’s HospitalMedical Center, University of Cincinatti, USA,E. Scott Huebner, University of South Carolina, USA,and Michael J. Furlong, University of California, SantaBarbara, USA

National surveys consistently reveal that an inordinate number ofstudents report high levels of boredom, anger, and stress in school, which often leads to their disengagement from critical learning andsocial development. If the ultimate goal of schools is to educate youngpeople to become responsible and critically thinking citizens who cansucceed in life, understanding factors that stimulate them to becomeactive agents in their own leaning is critical. A new field labeled ’positivepsychology’ is one lens that can be used to investigate factors thatfacilitate a student’s sense of agency and active school engagement.

Handbook of Education Policy ResearchEdited by Gary Sykes, Barbara Schneider, both atMichigan State University, USA, and David N. Plank,University of California, Berkeley, USA

A co-publication by Routledge for the American EducationalResearch Association.

Educational policy continues to be of major concern. Policy debatesabout economic growth and national competitiveness, for example, commonly focus on the importance of human capital and a highlyeducated workforce. Defining the theoretical boundaries andmethodological approaches of education policy research are thetwo primary themes of this comprehensive, AERA-sponsoredHandbook.

Drawing from multiple disciplines, the Handbook’s over onehundred authors address three central questions: What policy issuesand questions have oriented current policy research? What researchstrategies and methods have proven most fruitful? And whatissues, questions, and methods will drive future policy research?Topics such as early childhood education, school choice, access tohigher education, teacher accountability, and testing andmeasurement cut across the 63 chapters in the volume. The politicssurrounding these and other issues are objectively analyzed byauthors and commentators.
