“Education for sustainable development” project and

Metropolitan education department jointly organized

“School without waste – eco environment”

campaign from April to November 2016 in order to give

education for sustainable development to certain part of

the society through students and have it accustomed.

40 schools of UB participated the campaign and it

aimed to reduce waste and environmental pollution of

Ulaanbaatar, to bring tangible economic saving and

support to schools, to advertise the eco products,

recycling, to support the manufacturing, and to contribute

substantially in reduction of negative impact on health.

In total 550 students and 60 teachers (overlapped

numbers) participated in the activities within the

campaign. Over 37000 students of 40 schools who were

involved in the campaign have been accustomed to sort out

the waste.

Closing ceremony of the “school without waste –eco

environment” campaign was organized as “Eco forum” on th

10 of Dec 2016 at Teachers' development house to

summarize the activities and to award the schools, eco clubs

and students who participated successfully. During the

ceremony, photos of all activities and handmade products

made by students were exhibited. Moreover, in order to

Visit to eco clubs

t hWe visited 105 secondary

school in Songino Khairhan district and

“Erdemiin urguu” complex school in

Bayangol district to see the activities of

their eco clubs. th

“Eco education club” of 105

school functions with slogan “Ecological

education by simple method”.

Whereas the club started with 25

students in 2013, the number of student

has been increasing yearly and now it

has 68 students of 6-12 grades.

th”Eco education club” of 105 school”

The club has participated the international project competition organized among eco schools and won 10 million

MNT. With this money, they established an information center with eco environment in their school. Thus, they're making a

proper place for students and parents to improve their ecological education. This club organize gardening activities,

planting trees and caring the green areas every year.

Besides, the club students do other things such as sprouting the flowers in the flowerbed, gardening and planting in

the open area of the schools, they also teach it to other students and made it routine.thWe had a conversation with the eco club teacher of 105 school, Mrs. B.Tserenbadam(B.Ts).

- What did you do within the eco club activities?

B.Ts: I have been leading the “Eco education club” for

three years in a row. During this time I did the survey on

“To effect child development and nurture through eco

education” and developed my own method and

experience. I am now disseminating my method to the

fellow teachers of other schools.

Moreover, we established “Eco library” and placed

over 70 textbooks, handbooks and recommendations of

20 categories in it.

- What is your future plan?

B.Ts: We are going to organize activities scheduled in

consolidated plan of UB eco clubs. We also plan to

organize effective activities conducted in our school for

parents and other people in rural provinces.

For example: reducing waste, planting the trees in

our fence, gardening and saving energy…etc.

Moreover, we also plan the activities for advertising

sustainable development goal and how to contribute as

an individual or a family to SD and action competence.

For this, I think we should work more on influence from

child to child and from child to parents through our club

students.

- Do you cooperate with other clubs that have

same functions?

B.Ts: We have a network among our 40 schools in

Ulaanbaatar and exchange our experiences and works by

it. “Air pollution and children's health” training has been

organized for 80 schools. “School without waste- eco

environment” campaign has been conducted for eight

months. “Eco fashion” fashion show and “Let's make

products out of waste” exhibition have been organized.

There are many Eco clubs that work together and

exchange experiences.

- How did your school work on providing

education for sustainable development?

B.Ts: Our school implements 7 steps program of

international eco schools. All teachers teach the subjects

integrating ESD. From this academic year on, one hour of

the “After school” class is used for Education for

sustainable development every week.

Our visit to eco clubs continued to “Erdemiin urguu” complex school

of Bayangol district.

Biology teacher, a leader of the eco club, D.Munkhtungalag said that

even though the club had 12 teachers and 30 students, all teachers and

students of the school are involved in the club activities. The club started

its operation in 2008 and they have gardened approx. 3330 square meter

area around the school. For example: they planted about 98 trees and

bushes namely aspens, elms, syringa trees. Also, they made watering

pans and brooms using waste from the school.

We had a conversation with a student of 9B class B. Margad (B.M)

who is a head of the student council of eco club, and a student

U.Munkhtungalag (U.M) about what they have learnt since they joined in

the club.

Eco club students of “Erdemiin urguu” complex school

- What have you learnt by joining the “Eco club”

and organizing many activit ies to protect

environment?

U.M: I understood that actions such as sorting out the

waste and planting flowers... etc. are one of the many

ways to protect nature. Besides, I learnt to work with my

peers as a team.

- I was told that you are taught ecological

education once a week. Would you share with us

what you learnt from this lesson?

B.M: I learnt to name the species of flowers. In

addition, they teach how to plant flowers and grow them.

So, we have flowers at home that planted by ourselves.

It's always nice to care them at school and see them

grow.

- Have your eco club members submitted their

work to the drawing or other competitions?

U.M: From our club members, four essays and four

drawings have been submitted to the competitions.

- There is a saying “we can start with small things

to save our planet”. What is your opinion on it?

U.M: I take it upon myself. For example: I used to use

plastic bag a lot, before I joined the “Eco club”. Then, I

learnt the plastic bag is very harmful to nature and it takes

forever to dissolve into ground. So, I started to use fabric

bag for our grocery. My family got to use fabric bag too.

Because it saves money.

- Do you share your findings from Eco club or

other after school activities with your friend and

family?

B.M: I often talk about it with our family. Thus, my

family learnt to unplug the TV when they don't watch it, for

saving electricity. Unless doing so, we'll waste 15V of

electricity. I've read about it.

U.M: I too, talk about my findings with my family. Also, I

tell my friends that it is important to protect our nature.

Most of them just say “Oh yeah?”. When we play at their

places, I almost never notice them exercising anything.

But, I try to be a role model, like if the restroom's light is on,

I turn it off.

- Do you have any words to say to your peer?

U.M: Listen to your teachers carefully. Environment is

every single thing around us. So, if we learn to protect it,

we can prevent any undesirable consequences. And, it is

the biggest investment to ourselves.

B.M: We are taught many things about protecting the

nature, in our school. All of them should be accustomed by

us. Not only to say “yes”. But also, we should keep in mind

that “Right person's actions are always right, even behind

the scene”.

While seeing the activities of the two eco clubs we had an impression that the students have better attitudes than adults

and done significant works and contributions in sustainable development and environmental protection.

It is a fact that when it comes to sustainable development, people tend to think that it matters only to decision makers.

But, students have already understood that we can achieve sustainable development by acquiring right lifestyle.

organized “Education for sustainable development-

implementation of basic and secondary education” training th th

from 7 till 9 Nov 2016 for teachers who have been

working for more than 13 years.

The training was organized in 9 places at the same time

focusing on 13 subjects and involved total of 2023

teachers.

In organizing the training they used self-inclusive and

creative forms and methodology based on learning by

doing concept. They compared the contents, methodology

and evaluation of the basic, secondary education as well

as they analyzed the difference and similarities. Moreover,

the professional teachers exchanged their experiences on

the topics that are hard to teach and the topics newly

inserted in the core curriculum for secondary education.

From after-training questionnaire, we can see that it

was an important step for strengthening teachers'

knowledge on SD, attitude and action competence.

Besides, it was efficient by studying implementation

methodology on integration of ESD into the subject

contents and action competence of the teachers in the

21th century as well as by discussing and having a

common understanding on implementation of its findings

in teacher's development.

Capacity building of educational sector

Findings of "Awareness and attitudes of business units

about environmental issues 2016" survey which was

conducted by ESD project, concluded that capacity

development training is necessary for business entities to

be aware of Environmental Management System (EMS),

ISO14001. Within this framework, an assessment has

been done for the national consultancies that support

organizations to implement ISO14000 family standards in

Mongol ia . Based on the assessment resu l t ,

“Environmental management system” handbook has been

developed and 3 days training was organized to strengthen

the capacity of national consultants on ISO14001.

In addition, we organized “Greening business DNA”

forum in order to introduce and advertise the significance

and need of EMS to the business organizations.

With initiative from ESD project, eco club students did

environmental assessment in the working premises of the

Ministry of Environment and Tourism (MET) within the

“Together for green development” campaign of MET. The

assessment have been done in 5 fields, waste, surrounding

environment, energy consumption, heat loss and water

consumption. Let’s have a look into assessment.

The students are doing waste assessment.

Eco school students conducted environmental assessment of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism.

Waste assessment:

In doing waste assessment, they assessed inside and

outside waste as well as the knowledge and attitude of the

MET staff.

Summary: Knowledge of the staff is not sufficient.

48.9% of the inside trash is recyclable. Yet, nobody sort

them out and 61.5% of the printers print on only one side. As

for the outdoor waste, there were no obvious litter.

However, there were not a trash bin with “recycle” sign

either.

The students are doing waste assessment.

Assessment of surrounding environment:

The surrounding environmental assessment was

done including green area, outside lighting and parking

lot.

Summary: The assessment shows that there is no

enough space to enlarge the green area, and no place for

staff and visitors to have a break. The students also

observed the MET staff were not satisfied about exterior of

the building.

Outside lighting don't meet the standards, but they can

light the place. Though, roads and passages meet the

hygiene standards, they are narrower than the standards.

Due to poor planning of the city, many buildings were built

in the same small area and get crowded.

Therefore, the exterior is becoming a problem for

every organizations because of their bad cooperation. Surrounding environmental assessment

Assessment on energy consumption

Assessment of heat loss:

The students assessed the heat loss with professional

device as well as the questionnaire taken from 20 staff

using sampling method.

Summary: Quality, location of the windows are not proper,

sealing and insulators of the windows are not good enough.

Due to these factors, there is considerable amount of heat

loss. There is no heat insulation installed in the flooring.

Thermal insulation in the ceiling is just ash bricks and it's not

good enough. The heating is unnecessarily high, especially

in spring and fall because of the radiators are not

adjustable. Students measuring heat loss

Assessment of energy consumption:

In assessing the energy consumption, the students

took questionnaire from 80 staff using sampling method

and did an observation in 30 office rooms.

Summary: Natural light is not good enough in 35% of

the total area. Besides, staff who sit next to windows close

the curtains and turn the lights on during daytime. It shows

the lack of organization. So that the staff tend to avoid

natural light and prefer electric light.

It is common for MET staff to work overtime and so

much they use electricity. Also, they don't unplug the

electric devices. Generally, they lack of knowledge on

saving electricity.

Students assessing water consumption

Assessment of water consumption:

The water consumption assessment was done by observation,

comparison and questionnaire.

Summary: A person use water in toilet average 32L daily, 690L

monthly. Taking all number of staff of MET it sums up to 114000L

monthly and 5200L daily. Let's assume that a person uses 5L water for

drink daily. He or she uses 20L for washing hands 5 times a day which

means 4L for washing hands once. Then, approximately 100000L water

is lost somewhere. During the observation, the students found that th105ml water were leaking per second from a WC pan in the toilet on 4

floor. When they calculate it approximately, it becomes 378L per hour,

9072L per day, 272160L per month. If we convert it to money it'll be

462672 MNT and the students concluded that it takes 40% of the total

water usage of the MET.

The students presented their assessment results to the Ministry

of Environment and Tourism.

Eco club students who did the environmental

assessment, presented the results and recommendations

to the Ministry of Environment and Tourism. It was

appreciated by MET very much. State secretary of MET said

that it was an excellent initiative in good timing. He also said

Gender mainstreaming

The pursuit of gender equity and equality is crucial in

attaining a sustainable development. For ESD project,

gender mainstreaming involves ensuring the gender

equality through reviewing and revising the textbooks,

curriculum, school environment, teaching and learning

methods as well as drawing public attention to the gender

equality through trainings and outreach. In addition,

ensuring the gender equality is embedded in the planning,

implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the project.

Therefore, as a starting point, “Education for

sustainable development” project conducted thorough

gender analysis of the secondary education of Mongolia

from December 2015 till May 2016. Based on findings of

this analysis, a well aligned, time-bound Strategic Action

Plan to promote the gender equality in secondary

education of Mongolia is now being drafted. It aims to

bring broader social and cultural change through

education.

In line with this activity, the GIZ gender focal points

have initiated and organized the consultation workshop

involving relevant stakeholders – government, NGOs,

private sector working towards the gender equality in

Mongolia. As a results of the consultation workshop, basis

of networking among relevant stakeholders was

established, willingness for collaboration was expressed

and regular exchange through different channels was

agreed. Projects working in education sector such as

German Mongolian Institute of Technology (GMIT),

Cooperative Vocational Training in Mineral Resources

Sector Program (CVT), Education for sustainable

development project (ESD) and “Higher education

reform“ project can collaborate and support the Ministry of

Education, Culture, Sciences and Sports in gender

mainstreaming activities whereas the Ministry of

Environment and Tourism can be supported for the

implementation of the Environmental Sector Gender

Strategy, developed in 2014.

the proper measurements will be taken accordingly.

Moreover, he suggested to conduct the assessment in

other government organizations.
