Through this fun-filled activity, our instructors subtly draw out the ‘best’ in each and every pupil – the guests are encouraged to try their hand at challenges they mightnever before have dreamed of tackling.

Their self-confidence soars. Every participant walks away with a new-found self-belief, and a real pride in what they have achieved. Thus, they become more open to newlearning experiences, and develop the resources to approachseemingly impossible challenges with a new vigour.

Our timetable permits six sessions of activities per day –ranging from team-building challenges to timeless target pursuits, and throwing in a few adrenalin-pumpingadventures along the way.

A basic truth of high-quality outdoor education is that itpaves the way for ‘learning outcomes’ that simply cannot be

achieved within the confines of the classroom.

Horizon Adventure Centre is a recognised Gaisce teachingestablishment and with the increase in interest in the awards,we have put together some information so you and yourstudents will know what to expect. The Gaisce awards areopen to anyone between the ages of 15 and 25 years

• Recreation• An Adventurous Activity*

The President’s Award-Gaisce, The State Apartments Dublin Castle , Dublin 2 Tel: 01 4758746 Email: [email protected] Website: www.p-award.net

The following information is based on The Bronze Award.

PREPARATIONThere is a need to differentiate between the normalactivity programme we offer and the Gaisce programme. You may have been to Horizon before on an activityholiday and will know that we offer a chance for anyone of any level of fitness to participate in our multi-activityprogramme. However we do recommend that anyoneattempting the Gaisce adventure awards have a very basiclevel of fitness to begin with. But more than that, a mentalwillingness to really get into the spirit of the adventure anda desire to complete the challenge that is laid out beforethem is vital. This is why we also ask schools to look at adevelopment program spanning over the six weeks leadingup to arriving at Horizon. This development programshould cover all aspects of preparation required for thetrip to Horizon. It is essential too that students have thecorrect clothing and personal gear for the Gaisce programme.

WALKING OPTIONSix weeks is plenty of time to build up a level of fitness tocomplete the walking expedition. It doesn't even need tobe up hills it can literally be as simple as walking around

the neighbourhood every evening after school. Again withall these training programmes, it is acceptable for thestudents themselves to appoint a leader who couldcontact us directly. It is vital to the Gaisce programme that the students do as much of the organising as possibleto really make it "their" project. It would also give themthe opportunity to organise some fundraising for the trip, which in another way will bond the group and teach them some different values.

WHAT TO EXPECTEach programme lasts for one and a half days. Werecommend arriving at lunchtime and spending the first half of the day starting the challenge with slightlyeasier sections of the route. Then the next day the mainsection of the challenge will be completed. This is only asuggestion, as we know some groups have limited time.

Although Gaisce recommend camping over night, they are fairly flexible and if it is late in the year it might not be feasible.

Horizon charge the same price as their normal activitypackage for the Bronze walking option. Call us to find out more at 098 35844.

There are also 3 different levels, starting with the Bronze, then the Silver and finally the challenging Gold. Participantsmust begin with the Bronze and continue to the Silver then Gold. For more information on the first three areas ofactivity or general Gaisce queries contact:

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Q: WHAT EXPERIENCE DOES HORIZON EDUCATION AND ADVENTURE ACTIVITY CENTRE HAVE?

A: As pioneers of educational activity centres in Ireland and the UK, we have many years of experience in this sector behind us. We have kept in touch with every change in Outdoor Education – and, in most instances, we have ledthe changes. We bring that experience to bear in everything we do – how we devise our programmes, how we roll them out, what staff we employ, how we ensure the trip is as enjoyable as possible for students and teachers.

Q: ARE YOUR PROGRAMMES UP-TO-DATE?

A: Yes. We don’t wish to sound boastful, but we are at the cutting edge of educational activity trips. We note every innovation in foreign countries and implement them where we think they would apply in Ireland – and we also conjure up our own new approaches.

Q: IN BRIEF, WHAT BENEFITS WILL MY CLASS GET FROM ARESIDENTIAL TRIP TO YOUR WESTPORT CENTRE?

A: We will introduce your students to a brand new learning environment. It will be exciting, it will be challenging, andit will be fun – and these three components, when mixedtogether, produce an environment where your students learn quickly and enthusiastically. They will expand their horizons, gain in self-confidence and independence.

We promote teamwork and this approach can have far-reaching benefits in terms of bringing a class, and its teacher, closer together.

Q: IS YOUR CENTRE SECURE AND SAFE?

A: Yes. We offer 24-hour supervision, so you can rest assuredthat your students are constantly monitored. The Centre itself is a secure entity within the Westport Woods Hotel complex. Our staff are highly-trained. Upon arrival at our Centre, all schools receive a fire safety briefing, where all emergency exits and meeting areas are pointed out.

Procedures for evacuating the buildings are also rehearsedat this point. This is followed by an emergency fire drill that includes everyone – students, teachers and staff.

Q: DO WE HAVE TO ORGANISE OUR OWN INSURANCE?

A: Full Public Liability Insurance cover is included in the overall package price.

Q: HOW DOES PAYMENT WORK?

A: Once you have booked your dates for a visit to our Westport Centre, the first, non-refundable deposit will falldue within 21 days. The second deposit is due eight weeks after the first, and the third, and final, payment falls due ten weeks before you arrive.

Q: WHAT ABOUT DATES AND PRICES?

A: Please refer to the Dates & Prices Sheet inserted in this brochure. If one is not included, please call us on the number below.

Q: DO THE DREADED MIDGES SPOIL OUR ENJOYMENT OF THE OUTDOORS?

A: No. Westport is a midge-free zone, you will be glad to hear!

You may still have some questions - if we don’t answer them here, pleasecontact us and we will deal with your queries.
