History & tradition

Bishop John Loughlin

Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School has been guided by one goal: to provide the best Catholic education for the young people we serve. In 1851, De La Salle Christian Brothers assumed direction of what was then known as the St. James School on Jay Street. This school later became known as St. James Diocesan High School for boys. In 1933, the school moved to Clermont Avenue and the diocese changed the name to Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School in honor of John Loughlin, the first Roman Catholic Bishop of Brooklyn (1851-1891).

The Bishop Loughlin tradition is built on a foundation of faith and academic excellence. Dedicated staff, superior instruction, energetic students and an ever-growing school campus come together to create the perfect atmosphere for learning.

Allow yourself to become a part of the Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School tradition of excellence by experiencing a rigorous and challenging curriculum, state-of-the-art computer technology, active spiritual community and first class college and career preparation. Together, we can make the next four years and your future a success.

our ValuesMission StatementBishop Loughlin Memorial High School is a Catholic, Diocesan, college preparatory high school that draws its Christian perspective from the faith tradition of the Roman Catholic Church and the Lasallian tradition of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. Loughlin fosters academic success, builds character, develops future leaders, and nurtures a vibrant personal relationship with God. Loughlin stimulates and supports a student’s quest for intellectual, spiritual, physical, moral and civic development. Students are challenged to achieve their full potential, to strive for excellence and to further their education at colleges and universities. Loughlin students, faculty and staff are committed to an inclusive community that respects diversity in its many forms and values excellence in scholarship.

Lasallian EducationA Lasallian education is based on the teachings and vision of St. John Baptist de La Salle. For De La Salle, education meant development of the total person.

A school can be said to be Lasallian:

• when there is a profound respect for each student as a unique person,

• when there is a spirit of community,

• when the school offers quality education,

• when it really merits the adjective Christian,

• when it manifests solidarity with the poor and promotes the quest for justice and peace,

• when its administrators and teachers have made their own the characteristics of Lasallian education,

• when the school community is formed in reference to the story of John Baptist de La Salle.

In a Lasallian school, the Christian dimension permeates and shapes every aspect of school life: tone, atmosphere, spirit, signs, symbols, relationships, curriculum, requirements, policies, and regulations.

Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve: is the motto for a Lasallian education.

A Lasallian Education proposes – but in no way imposes – Jesus Christ. At a Lasallian school, all students are treated with respect and care, whatever their religious beliefs.

Brother Dennis, PresidentOur goal is to offer a human and Christian education to young people which prepares them to be successful in this world without sacrificing core values.“ ”

Course Offerings

“Bishop Loughlin provided me with an invaluable education. I was challenged immensely by coursework that helped me prepare for college, but more importantly, I was taught how to think critically through any intellectual challenge that I would face in the future. I learned that education is not only about the answers, but also about the path we take to arrive at them.Robert McRae ’03University of Pennsylvania ’07 ”

Houses of LoughlinAugustine House: named for St. Augustine and the former St. Augustine Diocesan High School. Bonilla House: named after Br. James Bonilla ‘55 who served as Loughlin’s principal for 11 years. Cordero House: named after St. Miguel Cordero, an Ecuadorian born Christian Brother who was a gifted teacher.Drexel House: named for St. Katherine Drexel, an advocate for the less fortunate who founded over 60 schools.McDonnell House: named for Bishop Charles E. McDonnell, the second Bishop of Brooklyn, and the former Bishop McDonnell Memorial High School. Raphael House: named for Br. Raphael Rafiringa, a Christian Brother from Madagascar who was put in charge of all the Catholic churches and schools in his country during civil war.Solomon House: named for Solomon Le Clerq, a French Christian Brother martyred during the French Revolution.Toussaint House: named for Pierre Toussaint, born a Catholic slave in Haiti, who moved to New York City and eventually funded the building of a Catholic Church.

House SystemAt the start of the 2010-2011 school year, Loughlin was the first school in New York City to employ the house system. Just like the Harry Potter series, all students are randomly assigned to houses when they enter as freshmen and will remain in that house until they graduate.

Within each house, student leaders of each grade level will be in charge of running house meetings, planning events and activities, organizing the mentoring of younger students by older students, and holding each student accountable to the values of Bishop Loughlin.

Each house will generate a strong sense of belonging among its members. Instead of incoming freshmen trying to find a place among the 800 students of Loughlin, they will have a group of 100 students of all grade levels in their house that will help them adjust to the new surroundings. The houses will have

their own colors, mascots, and apparel and compete against each other academically, athletically, and in special school-spirit events.

A great deal of responsibility is placed on the student leaders to creatively implement their own ideas, but with that responsibility comes leadership experience and student empowerment. The houses compete to be the top house of the school year through points garnered for things like involvement in community service, supporting the Loughlin sports teams, being punctual in school, academic excellence, and house competitions. The house system is going to usher in a new era of student leadership, involvement, unity, and opportunity at Bishop Loughlin.

STUDENT GUIDANCEThe Loughlin Guidance Department supports the efforts of parents and teachers in helping students have a successful high school experience. Counselors work with students to insure academic achievement, personal growth, and a fruitful college search and application process.Academic Counseling:Counselors monitor the academic progress of students from semester to semester, year to year. Our counselors provide guidance for course selection, graduation requirements, summer school and enrichment programs.

Personal Counseling:Counselors work with students individually and in groups to work on relationships and personal growth. Through parent workshops and individual consultations, school counselors are happy to work with parents to more effectively support their teenager’s success. When helpful, referrals are made to outside resources.

College Counseling:The Guidance Department coordinates with colleges and universities to host an annual College Fair. The department also conducts financial aid information sessions for parents. Counselors guide students through the process of applying to college by aiding in the completion of the application.

Testing:The Guidance Department administers the PSAT to Freshman, Sophomores and Juniors. Twice a year, Loughlin serves as the test center for the SAT. Students are assisted with the registration for the SAT and the ACT. Counselors work with students on how to understand their test scores.
