Achievement comes from a sense of wellbeingAt Loughborough High School, we understand that a happy school environment naturally leads to success. That’s why our most important role is to ensure that your daughter enjoys her time with us. We place great emphasis on providing first-class pastoral support and developing close links with you as parents.

We know that parents often worry about selective, academic schools being very competitive and difficult places to study. This is simply not the case here. Newcomers are warmly welcomed at Loughborough High School and easily integrate: our girls really do look out for one another.

There isn’t a typical Loughborough High School girl. Your daughter can be the young person she wants to be. We seek to develop every girl’s talents and strengths and provide the encouragement that she needs to feel secure and accepted, however she approaches life. This is all part of our School’s true spirit. Our pupils know we are there alongside them and we will help them work through any issues in a warm and supportive setting. Above all, your daughter will be joining a friendly and welcoming community.

Of course, we also celebrate our rich history and traditions, and value hard work and academic achievement. Our purpose is to equip your daughter for life beyond school and to nurture her confidence and skills as she becomes a valued member of society. We aim to give her the tools to forge her own path in whatever field she chooses.

A good education is not just about the excellent exam results that our School attains, it is about so much more.

Stuart Thompson, Acting Head

About Loughborough Schools Foundation

The Loughborough Schools Foundation is a charitable Foundation comprising four Independent Schools and a Nursery. Over 600 colleagues are employed in teaching and non-teaching roles.

The Foundation commits around 5% of its total income for the provision of Foundation bursaries and scholarships at the Senior Schools. Donors of the schools provide additional financial support through The Burton Bursaries.

An extensive transport system of 17 school bus routes operates for pupils across all parts of the East Midlands including Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.

Campus: The Schools are based on two neighbouring campuses on the south side of Loughborough – Burton Walks (42 acres) and Gray Street (10 acres). Loughborough Grammar School’s playing fields are situated a mile away in Quorn, with 40 acres of sports facilities on a 70 acre site. Significant recent investment has been made in a state-of-the-art science park at Loughborough Grammar School and the dedicated Music department for all Loughborough Schools Foundation pupils. In 2016, Fairfield Prep School opened its very impressive new Pre-Prep building, which includes a Kindergarten for children aged 3+, whilst at the campus at Loughborough Amherst School, Loughborough Nursery has opened for children from 6 weeks to 4 years old.

Boarding: Loughborough Grammar School has a long and proud tradition of boarding with two Boarding Houses which accommodate a close-knit community of Boarders. Our Boarders enjoy a rich daily life and as a small community within an extensive campus, they are treated as individuals while benefiting from the opportunity to take advantage of the vast resources available on campus.

Single Sex & Co-Ed Options at Senior School: Collectively, Loughborough Schools Foundation is pleased to offer parents across the East Midlands a unique opportunity for those choosing an independent education. From the age of just 6 weeks in our 51 weeks a year Nursery, all the way to exam success at 18, a child and siblings are able to complete their whole educational journey on one beautiful, happy and richly multi-cultural family campus.

We are able to offer a choice of both single-sex and co-educational senior schooling to suit pupil and parental preferences and with four schools sharing a campus, we are able to invest in wonderful facilities that a single school would find hard to match at comparable fee levels. Our curriculum choice, transport network, Music department with ‘All-Steinway School’ status, STEM teaching, sports provision, extra-curricular opportunities, immaculate grounds, joint school activities such as Drama, CCF, Debating and social events are just some examples of this.

The Loughburians is the Alumni Association for Loughborough Schools Foundation. Pupils become Loughburians on entry to School and participation in this community continues throughout their lifetime. Loughburians benefit from receiving publications and news, and can attend the events and reunions organised by the association.

Our Alumni demonstrate their ongoing affection and engagement with their Schools by offering their time and expertise in such areas as career advice, mentoring and opening up opportunities outside the classroom.

Loughborough Grammar School is one of the country’s oldest boys schools. After Thomas Burton, a prosperous local wool merchant, bequeathed his estate to priests in Loughborough, they founded the School in 1495. Originally housed in the town’s Parish Church, the School moved to its present location in 1852 and these buildings were Grade II listed in the 1980s. The School celebrated its 500th anniversary in 1995, when HM Queen Elizabeth II opened the new English block, the “Queen’s Building”. Classroom facilities have been significantly enhanced in the last decade by the construction of a state-of-the-art Science Park.

Loughborough High School was founded in 1850 and is believed to be one of the country’s oldest grammar schools for girls. When Loughborough Grammar School moved in 1852, it had become more socially acceptable to educate women and so the Foundation was extended to include girls and Loughborough High School. It moved to its current site in 1869. The buildings include 19th Century school buildings, converted houses and later additions from the 1960s onwards. In 2010, the science building was refurbished and extended with four new laboratories. The School celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2000 with a visit by HRH The Princess Royal.

Originally founded in 1929 as part of Loughborough High School, Fairfield Prep School became an autonomous school within the Foundation in 1969. The School’s oldest building, Fairfield House, known as the White House, was built in 1823 by a family of influential hosiery manufacturers and later bequeathed to the School. In 2016, impressive new classrooms and performance facilities were opened which has provided extra space from which all pupils are now benefiting.

In 1841, Lady Mary Arundell opened a small girls’ school in Paget House, Loughborough and persuaded Blessed Antonio Rosmini (1798–1855) to send religious sisters from Italy to set up a convent. In 1843, Sister Mary Francesca Parea and Sister Mary Anastasia Somonini took over and Our Lady’s Convent School opened in 1850 with the beautiful Convent building and Chapel at its core (designed by Charles Hanson who was influenced by Augustus Pugin). In 2015, the School joined the Foundation and in 2016, Loughborough Nursery was opened on the Convent campus. In 2018, the School rebranded to Loughborough Amherst School and is set to become co-educational from 4 - 18 years in 2019.

In 2006, the building housing Loughborough Schools Music was opened to serve the musical needs of all pupils’ across all four Schools, from Pre-Prep to Sixth Form.

Remarkable relationshipsSchool life should be as much about friendship as Physics; as much about camaraderie as coding. The girls your daughter meets here will be her supporters not her rivals. That’s the core belief that runs throughout our School.

We work hard to ensure that every student feels understood and valued. You can feel reassured that this is a place where newcomers are welcomed whenever they join us. The natural instinct of our girls is to get along and help one another.

In our friendly and respectful single-sex environment, the girls can relax and be themselves without feeling self-conscious. Your daughter will be joining a community whose members are enthusiastic about their learning and eager to take advantage of the opportunities that are presented to them. They form lifelong friendships through the firm foundations that are set at Loughborough High School.

Year 7 has been an amazing year for our daughter. She has grown in confidence and the School has supported her as she has enthusiastically embraced all the many exciting activities and opportunities that have been made available to her.

We learn in different ways, you never know what the lesson is going to bring.Year 10 Student

Enjoying learning is the key to success

We encourage our girls to strive continually to achieve the best academic results they possibly can. We also want them to be enthusiastic about learning and the girls are supported by dedicated teachers who will encourage them to be curious, and question and debate in the classroom and beyond, to help them develop key learning skills.

Our smaller class sizes, superb teaching, well-resourced departments, and an overall environment that’s ideal for learning, create the conditions where your daughter can do her very best.

Award Winners

At the Teentech Awards 2017, two Loughborough High School teams were crowned winners in two categories for their concepts. The first of these, created by Team Safecase, was a phone case with added security features to safeguard young women in the event of an attack.

Our second winner, Team ConductOvest, came up with the idea of a lightweight jacket for train conductors that connects to an app and raises the alarm in an emergency situation, including terrorist incidents.

Whatever your daughter’s talents and interests, she’ll find a club or activity to suit her

We offer activities for every age range during lunchtimes and after school. This includes opportunities for the Adventure Service Challenge (Years 7 to 9) and The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme (Years 9 to 13), which help girls to push their personal boundaries and acquire new skills. Girls can also join the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) where cadets not only follow the ethos of the School, but also develop core values of loyalty, integrity, courage, discipline, respect for others and selfless commitment. All of these skills are developed and encouraged and can be transferred and used in further education and employment.

Most importantly we always provide opportunities for girls to try lots of new activities and participate in whatever interests them. Your daughter will then naturally find what she enjoys and genuinely feels passionate about. All our girls are encouraged to express themselves and enjoy as wide a range of school experiences as possible.

Sporting success is outstanding

The achievements and honours we are producing currently means we have a strong profile within the region and nationally. We already compete with the very best within the area, and our pupils have a positive outlook on physical activity and sport. The girls enjoy trying their best and striving towards reaching their potential.

Encourage curiosity

We are an active and outgoing school. This means that we also value activities that take place outside the classroom, from our numerous school trips to varied types of charity work. This helps girls to develop their intellectual curiosity and offers an additional approach to learning through a varied programme of enrichment activities.

Charity fundraising is a cornerstone of our School, with over 40 charities supported each year. Encouragement is also given to girls to become involved in the local community through volunteering initiatives. The majority of students in Years 11 to 13 become heavily involved with the popular Voluntary Service Unit and participate in many community action programmes.

Since 2008, Loughborough High School has become one of 15,000 UK schools to become a member of the Eco-Schools organisation, gaining both Eco-School and green flag status.

Pupils speak warmly of the relationship they have with their teachers and feel particularly well supported by them.

By understanding your daughter’s unique personality, motivations and strengths, we can make her school years more fulfilling

Each form tutor gets to know every girl well and these close relationships are nurtured twice-daily at form-time. The progress of each pupil is carefully monitored and our support systems are geared towards ensuring academic and personal wellbeing.

Every Year 7 pupil is also allocated a pupil ‘buddy’ who acts as a ‘big sister’ while they settle into school life. If any issues do materialise, the girls can feel that they have someone to talk to who can offer help and guidance whenever it is needed.

Students in the Sixth Form are encouraged to follow their passions

We are able to offer a wide range of subjects which ensures that girls can study the courses which will assist them to fulfil their future ambitions.

The Sixth Form experience is challenging but friendly and thriving. Pastoral support remains strong and Sixth Formers play a much wider part in school life with leadership roles across the School community. There are some shared lessons and social activities with Sixth Form students across the Foundation; students value the increased responsibility which comes with being one of our senior members of the School.

Our UCAS and careers support is excellent and a very high percentage of girls move on to their first choice of university or other training.

Pupils leave the School ready to face the challenges which lie before them, and are equipped to face the demands of life beyond school, becoming active citizens of the 21st century.

Did you know...

...that we are the only remaining school in the country to stage traditional tableaux vivants at our annual carol service? It says so much about our sense of fun and heritage. This much anticipated event provides a uniquely memorable moment for our girls and one which is remembered fondly by Alumni of all ages.

Tableaux vivants translates as ‘living pictures’ with models remaining perfectly silent and frozen. The staging, pose, costumes, make-up, lighting, and facial expressions create a remarkable impression.
