Why Should We Change

Our Methods of Education?

There are two major differences which should be considered as we educate students in the 21st Century:

1. The students attending universities since the beginning of this millennium have grown up with technology all around them (millennial generation) and are very different than their predecessors

2. The rapid development in technology (such as internet, computers, tablets, and smart phones) has created new methods of disseminating the knowledge base in a much more rapid and efficient manner.

Incorporating Technology in Education

Reorganizing the course:1. Divide the course into smaller units based on

learning outcomes

2. Develop materials for each unit

3. Prepare videos of lectures & solved problems

4. Provide students with a weekly study schedule

Using available technology (elearning):5. Deliver course content with elearning

6. Develop methods to evaluate comprehension of video lectures

7. Use elearning to administer all graded items

8. Increase student awareness of grades throughout the semester

� In Spring 2004, course taught in traditional manner

� Innovative techniques described earlier were

gradually implemented in each semester

� In Fall 2011, flipped classroom model with hybrid

class meeting was implemented

� In the last 3 years almost 400 students have taken

my courses [6 sections of IME 3100 and 9 sections of

IME 3200] in this new format
