    Overview and Purpose:

    Do you know how people become citizens of the United States? In Immigration Nation,

    you'll find out as you guide newcomers along their path to citizenship. The goals of this

    lesson plan are for students to develop a sense ofempathy and to become aware of the

    varied type of immigration ports that immigrants used and forwhat reasons. Much of the

    learning will be discovery based through role -play.

    Educational Standards1. This game can be used to meet state standards that cover the need to identify

    various ways people become citizens of the United States (e.g. birth,naturalization), as well as identification ofcharacter traits that belong to aneffective citizen.

    2. Fourth graders study the history of the state ofCalifornia by investigating itsgeography, immigration, growth and pre-Columbian roots.

    The web-based game, Immigration Nation will give results that can be printed. Thisfeedback is broken down into correct and incorrect answers.

    Evaluation ofstudents on their personal website experience and what they learnedalong the way. Below is a rubric to be used for student reports:

    Three points: responds to complete outline; writes strongly cohesive,unified paragraphs; writes prose that is free oferrors in grammar, usage,and mechanics

    Two Points: responds to most of the outline; writes moderately cohesive,unified paragraphs; makes some errors in grammar, usage, and mechanics

    Share with students that since Europeans and then others first started coming to this

    country many have written fiction and nonfiction about the immigrant experience.

    Explain that after an initial class discussion, students will read a book related to

    immigration, will write a reviewof the book, and will then hold a follow-up discussion on

    the topic.

    Lead a discussion that can include both students born in the United States and studentswho have immigrated here. You might focus the discussion on the following questions:

    Why have people come to the United States in the past? Why do people come to the United States today? What are the benefits for immigrants and for the country when people from

    other lands settle here?

    Students will write, individually or in groups, a reviewofwhat they have learned from thewebsite interactive immigration game based tool. Have them write according to
