UNIVERSAL DESIGN

The reasoning behind Universal DesignNot all students are the same and all students come

from a variety of backgrounds, some are different ages, some have special gifts or talents, some have a different ethnicity, some have learning disabilities

but all students deserve to learn and do it to the best of their abilities!

What is Universal Design• Not all students are the same and all students come from a

variety of places• “Framework for designing learning experiences that work

across a wide range of learners”• “The main purpose is to make sure everybody is an expert

learner”

Principles of Universal design1. Provide multiple meaning of representation Provide options for perception Provide options for language and symbols Provide options for comprehension• Teaching should have a variety of ways of teaching to a class.

2. Provide multiple means of action and expressions Provide options for physical actions Provide options for expression skills and fluency Provide options for executive function• Student should be able to express what they know

3. Provide multiple means of engagement Provide options for recruiting interests Provide options for sustaining effort and persistence Provide options for self regulation• Students need to interact with teachers as they are learning

The process of Universal design• Identify the application•Define the universe• Involve consumers• Adopt guidelines or standards• Plan for accommodations• Train and support• Evaluate
