LSA MEMBER OF THE MONTH — DUANE LIQUIA

LSA Officers

As LSA starts the 2013-14 season, we have added some new members. The first is Duane Liquia. He dis-covered LSA while looking online for an association to get his Locksmith Certification. The company Duane works for, FBH Architectural Security, wanted to fill a new position. They asked Duane to fill that position as he is already doing lock installation at various job sites. FBH, located in Flint, Michigan is paying his expenses to go to Dallas, Texas in December to take basic locksmithing classes through ALOA. He is also joining ALOA and is looking forward to classes of-fered through LSA. Duane entered the work force as an 18 year old graduate from Schwartz Creek High School. After gradua-tion, he started working at an assembly plant in the Flint

area. Within a year, they needed a welder so Duane became certified through AWS Structural. After becoming a welder he also became a frame fabricator. In 2007 Duane was hired by FBH Architectural as an application consultant selling doors and hardware. He is now looking forward to becoming involved with LSA to en-hance his career. Duane and his wife recently celebrated the first year anniversary of their marriage! He also has a 14 year old son.

LSA Health Tip— by Dr. Christopher Shamass [son of John Shamass, CPL] Flu season typically starts in the fall and peaks in January or February. More than 200,000 people are hospitalized for flu-related complications each year. You are 60% less likely to need treatment for the flu by a healthcare provider if you get the flu vaccine. The CDC recommends everyone age six months or older get the flu vaccine. People aged 65 and older, young children, pregnant women and people with chronic medical conditions like lung disease, diabetes, heart disease, or kidney disease are at especially high risk from the flu. With the holidays approaching chances are you may be around someone who is at high risk from the flu, and getting vaccinated can lower the chance you could spread the flu virus.

“2013 AND BEYOND - DUES ALERT ”—BY AL MOEBUS, CPL

I want to re-emphasize that as we start another fiscal year of LSA we have another way of payment for dues. Be-sides paying by cash, check or money order, members can

now pay by credit card at any meeting. This is done through Ray Si-nai, CML, John Hubel, CML or others (to be determined). As a general reminder, the other procedure in place, according to a by-law amendment, is the cost per year. A one year membership is $60 but if you pay for two years the total is $110 and for three years it would be $160. Thus, a three-year membership payment will save you money in the long-run. As always, paying dues in a timely manner keeps our association strong.

PRESIDENTIAL PENNINGS—RAY SINAI, CML

In my efforts to get some input from our membership, I created and distributed a member sur-vey last month regarding what was wanted from our organization. We are always aspiring to do a better job for our members. Although some members did not turn in their survey yet, here is what I have learned so far: Why do we attend LSA Meetings:

Networking, camaraderie, advice with problem jobs, conversation, new information, education

What would you like to see more of : Tricks of the trade, member presentations of actual jobs, actual situations, members conducting

hands –on presentations, factory reps presenting existing products and new products

What topics for future meetings: Safe information, Life Safety, High Tech Security applications such as access control and high

security locks

What topics for future classes: Automotive- Domestic, Automotive openings, Safe combination changing and servicing, Inter-

mediate Master Keying

Thank you to all that participated. All of these comments WILL be considered by our Board of Direc-tors. The first meeting of the season was a great success. We had a number of members who did presentations. Bill Lynk, CML, CPS explained Corbin Master Ring Cylinders; John Hubel, CML presented Abus Padlocks; Aron Boag, CRL presented on LaGard Safe Dial installations and Her-culite door locks, even the President had a few tidbits of information to share. I want to Thank Randy Montpas, CRL for sponsoring the dinner last month. A very nice gesture! We added three new members to our group, Welcome to Byron Lutes, Dillon Poprawa and our 'Member of the Month', Duane Liquia. Another minor change is name badges. We realized that with all the members we have, we may not know the person’s name who is sitting next to us. We want to be a more connected, cohe-sive group and we hope name tags will make the difference. Good idea, I must credit that one to Bill Lynk! Our October meeting will include a visit from Steve Zipf of Zipf Lock Company. Steve is trav-eling from Columbus, Ohio to visit us. At the request of a member during the last meeting break, Bob Noble, CML, CPS jumped right in and offered to do a presentation on Profile Locks / Profile Cylinders. We also have other members standing in the wings to present if time permits. I appreci-ate what all of you do for LSA. Hope to see you all in October! It
