Fitting finales to festival of football It’s another big weekend of VAFA football with fourteen premierships to be decided. This, together with the A, B and D4 preliminary finals, makes another cocktail of dramatic finales. The VAFA is a feast of football. Whilst these matches contain emotion filled afternoons, our promotion and relegation system provides each final with a tale as engrossing as any grand final day. This year I have already watched three grand finals and twelve other finals, witnessing the extreme emotions of success and failure. I must admit that I am getting a little dizzy with all the action. Unfortunately, I wasn’t at Sportscover Arena on Sunday to witness the first ever draw in an A Section final. The extra-time concept to find a winner was a success and whilst the St Bedes Mentone Tigers’ supporters may have left a little glum it was reported to me that the atmosphere was electric. Extra-time has been often debated amongst the media commentators and during the off season, the VAFA Board will decide on whether to implement this rule into the home and away rounds. The inaugural Under18 competition culminates in the Grand Final on Saturday between Oakleigh and St Bernard’s at Central Reserve. Eight teams this first season and already we have had expressions of interest from another 10 clubs considering entering teams in 2010. This match precedes the U19 Premier Grand Final between Old Xaverians and De La Salle. It is interesting to note that the three top teams in the A Section finals filled the top three places in the Under 19s and the grand finalists in the U18s both had their senior teams in their respective finals. The strong clubs thrive throughout all their teams, not just at one particular level. Of the four senior sections that have concluded their preliminary finals, it is interesting to note that only one rebounded from a second semi final loss. Congratulations to Oakleigh, Fitzroy, Williamstown, St Mary’s Salesian and Kew who gained promotion to the higher sections. Oakleigh have risen to B Section for the first time in their 18 year VAFA history. It has been steady progress for the Krushers, and this may make them even stronger as they chase their ultimate goal of playing in A Section. The bar has been set by St Bedes Mentone Tigers and Oakleigh, and other clubs, will try to jump it. To finalise the line-ups for next year, St Kevins play Old Trinity in the B Section preliminary final. Both teams are not long from the Premier Section and I am sure are eager to return. This is my last editorial for the season and I want to close with a plea to our young community. It is at this time of the year, when VAFA players are celebrating their season, which they are at their most vulnerable. Players can show as much courage and discipline on the ground but it is off it where they can be most at risk. I am not saying don’t drink and enjoy each others mateship, but please always be aware of situations where violence can occur. Keep your wits about you and know how to avoid possible confrontation. The VAFA has not been immune from the violence on our streets and two of our brightest young players fell victim to needless assaults and have been left with enduring injuries. The VAFA congratulates all finalists. When celebrating your season, please do so with moderation and care, with respect for others and yourself. Quick thinking on the field can stop a goal or get one for your team. Such decision-making is also vital when a few seconds can change or ruin lives. Take it, but take it easy. We want to see you back in 2010. 1 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2009 V THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER THE JOURNAL OF THE VICTORIAN AMATEUR FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION September 12th, 2009 Price: $3.00 Vol. 09 No. 21 Michael Sholly CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER Editorial

This is my last editorial for the season and I want toclose with a plea to our young community.

It is at this time of the year, when VAFA players arecelebrating their season, which they are at theirmost vulnerable.

Players can show as much courage and disciplineon the ground but it is off it where they can be mostat risk. I am not saying don’t drink and enjoy eachothers mateship, but please always be aware ofsituations where violence can occur.

Despite being severelyovermatched, De La didnot give up. Injuries toMMaatttt FFiieellddsseenndd and LLuukkeeJJaarrvviiss helped their causenone, but their other youngguns, particularly DaammiieennHHaallee and SSaamm WWiill lliiaammss, kept running likeinfantrymen on the charge, seemingly oblivious to thecarnage around them. Not so far away is the day whensuch bravado will pay huge dividends.

The Xaverians showed more precision than abandon. It was a performance of calculated ruthlessness. Thetwo AAnnddyyss (BBoowweenn, RRyyaann) and the Three NNiicckkss(WWyynnnnee,, DDiimmaattttiinnaa and SSeerraaffiinnii) excelled, giving allahead of them ample chances. Once again, the goalswere shared. It matters not them who kicks them aslong as they go on the board. Tim Clarke was thegeneral in the middle of it all, ensuring that thecoach’s plan was carried out to the letter, and he wassurrounded by twenty-one others, some stars, allgood players, but first, last and always, a team that isas well drilled and as meticulous as any I’ve seen inyears.

On Sunday, in the winner-take-all first semi-final, amasterful performance from GGeeoorrggee DDeeCCrreessppiiggnnyyand a towering effort from JJaacckk WWaattttss saw Uni Bluestriumph in extra time over reigning premier St Bede’sMentone Tigers. One should also include MMaarrkkPPaatteerrssoonn in this group. Sometimes it’s hard to noticehim, unless you look under the packs.

The game see-sawed all afternoon and courtesy ofstraighter shooting (GGeeoorrggee’’ss 5 kicks, five goals, histeam’s first five) Blues kept their noses in front formost of the afternoon. Despite this, there was someexpectation that this would not stand, that the Tigerswould rediscover their slick teamwork and get thebusiness done.

Midway through the second term, BBrreetttt CCoolllliinnss had

taken a deft over the shoulder handball in full strideand had smashed it through the uprights from beyondsixty. This was the brilliance that the Varsity could nothope to match, but the Mentonians failed toreproduce. Still, at three-quarter time, the strugglewas still on. The wind freshened to the scoreboardend and the Tigers had last use.

But the Blues did some of their finest work into thewind. DDeeCCrreessppiiggnnyy kicked his seventh at the threeminute mark and then his eighth ten minutes later.BBeenn PPhhiibbbbss’’ goal at the 27 minute mark got theBeders to a seven point deficit. Then, all of a sudden,it was even-steven and the siren rang signallingovertime.

The weary changed ends and away they went again.Blues had managed just six goals in their hour withthe breeze, but SSaamm CChhaaddwwiicckk and MMaatttthheewwMMaallttmmaannnn seized on opportunities in the five minsplus time-on first OT period to put them in the boxseat with a thirteen point lead. Was it enough?Nobody knew. PPeetteerr MMccGGeettttiiggaann went back for a shotand there Tigers cramping everywhere. He missed.Blues kept running, working the ball out of defence. Then DDeeCCrreessppiiggnnyy got a free kick and rammed ithome into the wind. Eighteen points and all over: theTigers gone, just like that and the Blues survivinganother dogfight, finally turning the tables on a teamthat had beaten them four times in a row.

Coming Up:

I was right about the extra-time thriller, but my tealeaves gave me the wrong game. This week, morequestions than answers.

Can De La pick itself up from the mat? Can Uni Bluesdo the business again? Can GGeeoorrggiiee do it again? CanBlues keep up with De La’s speed? Who will go inwith a niggle; and who will miss altogether?

This will be another beauty of a contest. Last time, under the spires, Blues got home in a tight one. It wasthe same story at Waverley Park earlier in the year.

Time and again it’s been proven that I cannot pickwinners. That’s nothing to do with my abilities, butrather all to do with the topsy-turvy competition welove. This week, those tea leaves tell me blue, but nogold. I’m picking an ‘05 GF redux.

CLOSE AND NOT SO CLOSE

One can never trust the form displayed in the lasthome and away round. Finals, as we have been told bymany an expert, are an entirely new ballgame, a newkettle of fish and a whole new ball of wax. For once, they’re correct.

The semi-final weekend still in our rear-view mirrorproduced two entirely different games, with entirelydifferent results.

On Saturday, Old Xaverians were as powerful as inany days of yore as they dismantled an eager butinexperienced De La Salle in the second semi-final.From the first bounce, the Red and Blacks lookedmore than capable of matching it and enjoyed more ofthe ball into the breeze. Their narrow lead at the breakwas ominous.

In the second, MMaatttt HHaannddlleeyy became a big focal pointfor Xavs as they attacked through the corridor withrelentless precision. Their midfield was dominant anddeprived the Blue and Gold Mosquito Fleet ofopportunity. When those rarities did eventuate, thetight Xavs’ backline was more than capable ofstopping the thrusts and keen to catch theiropposition on the fast break.

On a ground where spaces are plentiful, De La foundnone, with Xaverians’ physical pressure enough tocreate uncertainty, indecision and turn-overs. Fortheir part, once with the ball, the Xavs headed to theirloose men, often too many to count. At the half, sixgoals separated them: not a match-winning lead, to besure, but a solid foundation.

All season long, Xavs have run out their games to thefinal siren. When the tempo suits their mix ofveterans, they put the foot to the floor and keep itthere. Their third quarter sealed the game and theirlast demonstrated a total mastery of field andopponent.

The Premiership quarterproved to be the gamebreaker. SKOB were unableto take full advantage of thewind and took only aslender lead into ¾ time. Itwas never going to beenough. With a strengthening southerly now behindthem OMs started the quarter like the good things theynow surely were and had the game wrapped up 5minutes in.The victors were best served by Paule (how anyonecould leave this bloke out of the team of the year isbeyond me) & Davies up forward. Down back therewere none better than the shutdown machine Horne, the young legal eagle has been a revelation in season2009. Old Melburnians Amateur Football Club is enjoying thetype of success not seen since Genghis Khan united afew nomadic tribes in central Asia. The regal old clubwould be now be favourites for a 4 flag haul in season2010 (although none of which are in the top sections;as their Glenferrie road based counterparts would nodoubt point out over a ‘73 Hermitage at theAthenaeum) For SKOB, the glass half full is that they live to fightanother day. The usual suspects Mick G, Tommy S andDowd all showed their quality.

TTrriinniittyySome pundits describe this as the biggest game of theyear.Win and you are in A Section, Lose and you can pleaseyourself. These two sides have played out two tight contests inseason 2009 where honours are even.SKOB will need to find some height in the back line tomatch up with tall and talented Ts Forwards while theBullen Boys would need to watch the run of the St Kev’smids. I would expect the Garvey / Ramsden, Waldron /Walsh, Simpson / Iezzi and Duggan / Healy clashes toworth the price of admission only.SKOB by a couple of late goals.

FFIINNAALLSS RROOUUNNDD 22RReevviieewwOOTT vvss.. SSnnoowwddooggss As predicted by the VAFA finest scribe the older moremature bodies of the Bulleen Boys proved too much forthe men of West Essendon. Right from the onset OT showed what they are capableof, matching St Bernard for run, applied more pressureand we far too tall for them. The results showed on the scoreboard Trinity bangedon 7.7 to 3.3 with the breeze. Given their opportunity StBernards could only manage 2.2 while Trinity piled onanother 6.2. The game was over as a contest at halftime and the sting effectively went out of the game atthat point. Trinity running out the easiest of winnersand St Bernard’s recent finals record gets another blackmark. While Bernard’s would be bitterly disappointed withtheir end to the season. Fair to say Gandhi threw morepunches than free falling Snowdogs (although theymanaged to get on the end of one or two). Brighterdays lie ahead with 11 players aged 18 – 20 gettingsenior finals experience. For the winners Cultrera was on fire and Rambo hasclearly caught hold of the old Mark Twain truism thatage is an issue of matter: if you don’t, mind it doesmatter. He added 4 to an impressive 2009 goal tally. Young Jake Walsh in the ruck was terrific while JackOsborn just keeps running and Matt Jessop wassuperb again (leading to some questions over the teamof the year credibility)

OOMM vvss.. SSKKOOBB After a long trip down Sydney Road hostilities began inearnest at 2pm sharp. The Redlegs had begun thegamesmanship early by declining to the give theplayer’s numbers in the record. This did not seem todisturb the St Kevs kicking with a strong breeze theyregistered the first 2 of the game to skip away to ahandy lead. OMs got the next one and from that pointthe Minor Premiers always had their noses in front (ifyou factored in the wind). The second quarter was alittle bit of an arm wrestle. Neither side was able to gainascendency. OMs by 10 points at the half.

GGRRAANNDD FFIINNAALL PPRREEVVIIEEWWMMHHSSOOBB (($$11..8877)) vv OOaakklleeiigghh (($$11..9922))The culture of success at Scammell Reserve hasseen the Krushers rise from the lowly D2 Sectionin 2006 to a C Section Grand Final in 2009,premierships in 2006 (D2) and 2007 (D1) proudmoments along the way. They have the blend ofhardworking players in JJoonn RRuutttteerr and LLeeeeBBaarrrraanndd that compliment the flair of glamour full-forward TTrreevvoorr BBrroommeellyy, who has booted 74 goalsfor the year.

MHSOB are no strangers to the final day of theseason at Sandringham, they dispatched Caulfieldfive years ago with clinical precision as yesteryearstars in FFaaiirrcchhiilldd, BBaammeerrtt and PPeerrttzzeell ran amok.Wind the clock forward, a new ethos has beencreated at South Yarra with skipper LLaacchhiiee EEvvaannsscommanding nothing more than 110% from everyplayer in the team. Barometer MMaatttthheeww WWhhiittee wason fire early in the Second-Semi Final, his outputtoday the measuring stick as to whether theUnicorns can silence the critics with the ultimateprize in football.

The spread of goalkickers for MHSOB isexcellent, seven players having kicked twentygoals or more in season 2009, the Krushers justthe three with a heavy reliance on Bromely to kicka big swag of six-pointers. Oakleigh will no doubtbe supremely confident from their Round 18whitewash over MHSOB but there was no RRooggeerrMMccIInnttyyrree that day. His year in the ruck has beenfreakish; the man-mountain has dominated themiddle and was the sole representative from asection lower than B to play in the VAFA stategame.

Stealing a line of Allan Jeans, a Grand Final is allabout “the ability to win the ball under pressure, make the correct decision and execute itcorrectly”. MMccIInnttyyrree,, EEvvaannss,, LLiimmbbrriicckk and WWhhiitteeshould be able to do that for the High Schooltoday.

Rattling out after half time, Caulfield gave theirhuge following decked out in Ralph Lauren flap-hats and boat shoes something to cheer about, slamming on the first four goals of the quarter togain all the momentum and ascendency on thescoreboard. But in as little time as the Fields hadtheir flurry of goal activity, Oakleigh bit back withsix of the next seven to enter orange time 20points in front.

Speaking of goalsneaks, let’s offerour congratulations to Attila Yamanof Swinburne University, who kickedhis hundredth goal a few weeks back.Quite a few. VAFA records showedhim stuck on 90, thoughinvestigation showed that his clubhad failed to notify of bags of five,

eight and twelve goals. Tilly kicked 115 for the year tolead the Association. Ah, details.

Less traditional rivalries arebeing built in some of the lowerSections, though withpromotion and relegationmeaning nearly half the teams ineach grade change annually, it’sharder to play enough gamesagainst one another to forge alove/hate relationship thatendures. Oakleigh and Caulfield

might be one to watch for in future years, while thosesame Krushers and the Unicorns, who will dook it outSaturday and enter B Section together next year look setfor a continuing series of hot contests. Fitzroy andRupertswood might be another to watch in the comingyears, and their GF today will add some mythology tofuture clashes. They’ve been on not dissimilar paths oflate and they may one day be linked like the Montaguesand Capulets, or more likely, the Hatfields and McCoys.

Which VAFA official’s wife who was onduty at the turnstiles made thehorrible mistake of asking her otherhalf for a favour? Running short ofsmall bills and with a bag full of 50s,she requested that her beloved

exchange the pineapples for some tens and twenties.“what do you think I am, an ATM?” was the friendlyresponse.

Which coach again pulledhis regular vaudevilleroutine by turning to theSportscover balcony andintoned “what are yougoing to do about it,Benny?” We presume he

was referring to Brian Goodman, who was atSandringham, but heard the plea clearly.

19THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2009VV18 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2009VV

There mightn’t be anupheaval at Old Melburniansnext year, as they seem to betravelling nicely. They are inpole position to win the ClubChampionship, with aclubbies flag in the bag,U19s on the park thisweekend and Seniors and

Ressies lining up for a tilt next week. Xavs are next bestplaced, with the same three remaining opportunities, but they fell short in the Clubbies GF.

With the end of the season for many today, many will laydown their weary bodies in a changeroom for the finaltime. We salute those veteran players who have given somuch to their clubs and to VAFA football over the years. For many, it will seem only yesterday that they wereeager kids in the U19s and that their twenties havepassed by all to quickly. Believe us, the thirties andforties go by even faster.

It’s interesting to noteprogress in theSportscover $10,000Pick the Premierscompetition. The firstitem of interest is thatforty (40) clubs fell at

the first hurdle, which was complying with the onerousentry condition of writing down the names of sevenclubs on an e-mail and getting it in by round three. That’s forty clubs who either don’t need the cash or haveideological problems with prognostication. Theremaining 33 clubs entered on time, giving themselvesa dash at the cash, though things are looking grim. We’re lobbying to open up the comp to all followers ofVAFA football next year.

Today’s A Section preliminary final between De La Salleand Uni Blues brings back memories of the lateseventies and early eighties. These two clubs played offin the GF in ‘79, ‘80 and again in ’83. The Blue andGolds won them all. Bernie Sheehy was in charge forthose first two, while Neil LeLievre piloted the third forDe La. Alan Salter was in charge of Blues in those firsttwo, and Sid Myers succeeded him. The Varsity’spresident at the time was the well known sports andmedia medico Dr Peter Brukner and its goalsneak in 79-80 was Peter Karvelis, the last man to boot a ton in ASection.

We’re deep into the finals’ series andit’s hard to believe it’s almost over foranother year. For most of our Sections,it’s Grand Day and we wish all of ourparticipating clubs all the very best.Sadly, only half you will be sippingfrom the chalice tonight, but that’sfooty.

It’s interesting to look at the Grandfinal matchups and how they varyfrom those second-semis afortnight ago. In the ten SectionsC-D4 (incl. Reserves) and the sixunder-age tiers, seven teams haveemerged from the first-semi toknock off the second-semi loser.

That’s nearly half! One of the teams to exit was theNorthern Bullants’ U18s, resplendent in their blackbants and red tops, who didn’t win the flag but win thetitle as the VAFA’s best dressed team.

Finals are indeed agreater pressurecooker than a homeand away game and

we’ve already seen two games go into extra time, withthe Club XVIII second-semi and the A Section first-semidemanding an additional ten minutes to settle the score.Given that most players have been on the track sinceNovember (ok, maybe the Clubbies were at the track, not on it, until March), it’s noticeable that the overtimeperiod really tests endurance and it’s not uncommon tosee players all over the ground stretching while trying toavoid cramp. The adrenaline and the mind seems tocarry players through the four quarters, but to saddle upand play some more is a big ask. However, it does getthe crowd going. Meanwhile, the coaches watch fromtheir boxes totally helpless, unless the score is tied andthe players must then go to another six minutes of OT!

The ads for new coaches havebegun to appear in these pagesand at vafa.com.au. While some ofthese might well be published tomeet a constitutional requirement,it does indicate that there willagain be sweeping changes withthe clipboards in 2010.

VAFA Chairman Bruno Conti went beyondthe call of duty (and over the fence) acouple of weeks ago at Gillon Oval after thealmost new Sherrin sailed into aneighbour’s backyard. On swooping on thecherry, he was met with loud protestations

from the homeowner about trespassing and invasion ofprivacy. A red-faced Bruno apologised and suddenly thewoman asked “aren’t you that number 34 who used totear up the half-back flank back in NOBs good olddays?” Conti replied in the affirmative and all of asudden she was asking him in for a cappuccino.

Congratulations to RussellDavidson on the arrival of his sonNed Christopher Davidson born onthe 7th of September weighing 8lb12oz. Mother and baby both doingwell. Hopefully young Ned is a

footballer not an umpire, but it would help if his fatherbought him a rattle for the crib rather than giving the kida whistle.

Also a get well for Luke Mahoney(St Kevins) who split his bottomlip open when tackling a playerand had to have 30 stitchesinserted. That’s more stitchesthan most players have teeth!

the cauldron, the westerly breeze has the potential towreak havoc and the two tribes will be brayingrelentlessly. Few would have predicted this lineup forthe flag, the Roys’ season looked done just a few shortweeks back, but here’s hoping it’s a cracker. It’s a cointoss, but I’ll say Rupo, in overtime, by a goal.

D1 TEAM OF THE YEARThanks to all clubs who sent through considered andbalanced nominations. Very interesting to see whichopposing players a club would select. The TOTY isobviously subjective, and I was sometimes tornbetween the consistent and the enigmatic. Surely atrue representation has plenty of both, and sotherefore some players have missed the cut by thebarest of margins. Next year fellas.

opened a 25 point lead. Theproverbial arm-wrestleensued in the third quarterin a hard physicalencounter. MMccCCuuttcchheeoonnand LLeeee were starting toinfluence the game for Werribee, while AAtthheerrttoonnplayed his best football of the year, providing Fitzroywith plenty of run from the backline. After anabsorbing and physically draining term, Werribeecould only match the Roys, who again held a 25 pointlead at the last change. The first five minutes of thelast term were no less willing, but back to backphysical encounters were starting to take a toll on theBees. Frustration crept in, Fitzroy capitalised bykicking a few more clear, the crowd starting to sensethat a Grand Final berth and promotion were Fitzroy’s.The ABC starting to sense they had a great intereststory for the night’s news. On the final siren, bothsides were spent and many of the Werribee boys wentto ground, hands on head, knackered. A great first upeffort in D1 – they’ll be hard to beat next year.

GRAND FINAL PREVIEWFirst of all, a minute’s silence for the players whomissed selection in the finals series. It can break yourheart; it’s gut-wrenching, but it’s footy. Ironically, these are often the blokes who would take one forteam anyhow. Softly softly, Rupo booked their grand final ticket, aweek’s leave and marched back to their northernCamelot to rest and re-energise their quest for theHoly Grail. Do they stick with Spinner in the goalsquare to set Brennan free across CHF? Or swing himdown back to help against the versatile Fitzroy forwardline, which is unlikely to change its structure, withBorland at the nucleus. These teams are more similarin game style than Werribee (beaten by Rupo by 36points; Fitzroy by 38), although the latter was a lowerscoring game. For the record, Rupo has won bothcontests this year against the Roys: in round two by67 points and 41 points in round 18 but this Fitzroyside has a stronger lineup and enough momentum tobaffle a quantum physician. As the pressure rises in

Last week’s skinny trees have thickened withblossom. The sun beat me to the newspaper thismorning; only last week the moon picked it out in thebushes. There’s the nearby buzz of lawnmower manwhose team didn’t make it, but the missus is happy. There’s an auction every hour, sometimes on the half, the trains are chockers with tribal scarves and kidswith showbag pride. Mic Mac’s running in the fourthat the Valley, there’s a sizzle coming from Bunningsand a line of cars snaking down to the Pit. It’s theweekend, in September, in Melbourne. Where wouldyou rather be?

PRELIMINARY FINAL REVIEWThe St Bernard’s ground is a natural cauldron; the playis fought in a crater, its walls heavy with the shoutsand urges of the cheering tribes. Bubble bubble toiland trouble. The brilliant sunshine beamed down thepit. A big game brewing, all or nothing. The ABC Newscrew arrived, interviewed the Fitzroy cocka on his wayto the box. SSiimmoonn TTaayylloorr’’ss first year in the job andhe’s got them to a prelim. And how about KKiirrkk NNoorrttoonnwho’s steered his Tigers out of D2 and straight up theguts. The pressure was intense.

Both sides had trouble settling early, Fitzroy seemedto get closer to a rhythm but the wunderkind BBoorrllaannddmissed everything from a couple of set shots and withit a chance to press home the advantage. Typically, nerves dictated and a scrappy term had the Roys takea 16 point lead at quarter time – but their sevenscoring shots to one looked ominous. There was a significant moment in the second whenwhich left KKeelllleehheerr, a little shaken, but dusted himselfoff and pushed to the next contest where he took themark and goalled to galvanize the Roys. However, being a man down seemed to have a similar effect onthe Tigers who started to move the ball with morepurpose out of defence via AAddddaammoo and DDeeaann but stillfound it hard to break through the Roys’ disciplinedlast-line of defence. MMccKKaayy and AAtthheerrttoonn started toget more of the ball, as did the Gary Wilson-esqueVViinnnniiee CCaahhii ll ll . SSeeddddoonn and SSttoollzz were lookingdangerous up forward, and by half time the Roys had

lining up for him as walkedonto the ground to celebratehis 335500tthh VVAAFFAA ggaammee last weekend. Well done all!

VVoottee CCoouunnttThis Monday night is the VAFA vote count and onething we would like to see is a big thank you to theumpires when the winner takes the stage!!!! No wewouldn’t hold it against you next year if you forgot tothank us. A highlight for the VVAAFFAAUUAA on this night will be thepresentation of UUmmppiirree ooff tthhee YYeeaarr and also theMMoosstt PPrroommiissiinngg UUmmppiirree. Can LLuukkee HHoollmmeess go backto back? (He may have difficulty with his acceptancespeech considering he’s in Malta). Will SSuuttttyy pick uphis third? Will PPrreessiiddeenntt RRuussttyy grab his second? Orwill we see a new face on the stage? DDaann LLaawwlloorrtook away the MMoosstt PPrroommiissiinngg UUmmppiirree award lastyear and followed it up with a fantastic 2009 on thefield. Who will it be this year? Either way a greatnight will be had by all there.

Umpiring a Grand Final must surely be one of thehighlights of an Umpires life. Like the footballersparticipating, it requires dedication andcommitment; an unflinching self belief; anenduring passion; and a sustained fire in thebelly.

To prepare for a Grand Final is not easy. Youexperience an array of feelings and emotionswhich are foreign. From the moment you receivethat seemingly elusive appointment, to theplaying of the National anthem, to holding theball aloft to start the game, to the final sirensounding, you will be enveloped by immensefeelings of excitement, pride, anticipation andsatisfaction.

Nerves play a part and we need to settle quicklyand protect the ball players like we havethroughout the season and remember the three"C's" Composure - Concentration - Consistency.

Enjoy the experience and look up at the sky andthank that lucky star because you never knowwhen or if it will shine on you again.

From an article written by Mark Gibson.

UMPIRES CORNERby Steve McCarthy & Leah Gallagher

GGrraanndd DDaayyGood luck to all field, boundary and goal umpireswho this week umpire a Grand Final - well done onyour year’s effort! If it’s your first Grand Final thatyou’re umpiring in, just remember the golden rule, you shower last but first to shout at the bar!!!

FFaavvoouurriittee SSoonnThe DDaavviiddssoonn bbooyyss,, RRuusssseellll aanndd CCaamm are highlyregarded in the umpire circles but at home was it adifferent story? Was the story that one just had theedge over the other or had just a bit more paternallove from their parents? We think so, and know fora fact, that when the boys umpired together justrecently their parents were there to cheer them on.So how come Cam had two gear bags at the game?Mainly because one was his dirty clothes washingthat he gave to his parents to take home and washfor him. But on another occasion CCaamm had changed early intohis uniform and had track pants on prior to thegame, because his mother was sitting at the groundmaking some last minute repairs sewing his shortsthat required mending.

DDaavviiddssoonn 22Congratulations to RRuusssseell ll DDaavviiddssoonn on the arrivalof his son NNeedd CChhrriissttoopphheerr born on the 77tthh ooffSSeepptteemmbbeerr weighing 8lb 12oz. Hopefully a few sleepless nights when hegets home won’t affect your grand final performanceRRuussss.

CCaann--ccaannSee the umpires got a mention in FFoorr tthhee LLoovvee ooff tthheeGGaammee column last week for their novel entry ontothe Garvey Oval for the first week of the finals. Whatwas it all about? We’re not sure but we do know thatthe very shy PPeetteerr ((TTuuggggeerr)) PPuull lleenn was behind it. Nodoubt you are an innovator, TTuuggggeerr! His partnerPPaaddddyy CCoouulltthhaarrdd was still in a spin from being 24hours early for his game as mentioned last week.

players who I think reallydeserve recognition for anexceptionally consistent andhigh-quality season. To beginwith: BBeenn GGrraayy,, ZZaacchhaarryyRReeaadd,, LLuukkee FFrreenncchh,, PPaauullHHuuddssoonn,, JJoohhnn GGaallvviinn,,MMaatthheeww CCrrooookkss,, TThhoommaass RReeeess and CCoorreeyy BBaannnniisstteerrhave shone for their respective teams throughout theseason, these players are the elite of the competition. It isdifficult to perform well every week for a team that is notenjoying a successful season, and thus AAnnddrreeww SSppiinnkk,,SSccootttt DDiiaammoonndd,, DDaammoonn WWoooodd,, and MMiicchhaaeell NNeeiillllyydeserve acknowledgment of there efforts throughout theseason. SShhaauunn PPaayyzzee,, JJaammeess CCoogghhllaann,, PPeetteerrBBrraabbeennddeerr,, and RRyyaann CCllaarrkk have had very impressiveseasons, as have SStteevveenn BBaarrllooww,, RRoobbeerrtt IIaaccoonniiss,, BBrreettttCCoonnnnoorrss,, and TThhoommaass PPaatteerrssoonn. GGaarreetthh RReeeess andDDaammiiaann LLoocckkwwoooodd also deserve a mention, which roundsout 22 players who I would be trying to find positions forif I was a selector.

The Grand Final will be an impressive spectacle, all thebest to both Peninsula and Williamstown.

27THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2009VV26 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2009VV

Finally the season decider has arrived, and as HomerSimpson so eloquently put it, “the winner will beshowered with praise, the loser taunted and booed untilmy throat is sore.” There may only be one winner, but inseriousness both teams have much to celebrate andcongratulations must go to both Williamstown andPeninsula who have been consistently the best performedsides for the season, and have earned their promotion toD1 division next year.

Therry Penola also have much to look forward to nextseason, but were simply not good enough despite aspirited second half against Williamstown last weekend. The favoured CY’s started well, outscoring Therry into thewind. In fact the first half belonged entirely toWilliamstown, as they controlled the game and held athirty-seven point lead at the main break. Therry Penolathen used long and direct kicks to drag themselves backinto the match, kicking three goals to none in the thirdquarter. The margin narrowed to ten points early in thelast quarter, but the class of Williamstown prevailed andthey ran away with the game. GGaarreetthh RReeeess capped a greatseason for Therry with another good performance in thepreliminary final, aided by MMaatttthheeww CCoosstteelllloo and MMaattttMMccWWhhiinnnneeyy. SShhaauunn MMccGGuuiinneessss’’ counterattacks forWilliamstown were invaluable, while NNiicckk WWaallsshh and TTiimmHHyynneess worked tirelessly all day.

The Grand Final promises to be a ferocious encounter. After a hard fought semi final and both teams beatingeach other in the home and away season, a healthy rivalryhas developed and spectators can expect a tough contestcombined with the quality football of the section’s besttwo sides. As it stands, Peninsula probably has the edgeleading into the match, however a splash of rain couldreally even things up. Peninsula will start as favourites, but Williamstown are a good side, and anything couldhappen on the day. As testament to both these teams’depths, the reserves Grand Final will also featureWilliamstown and Peninsula.

There have been many outstanding players throughoutseason 2009, and I do not envy those selecting the teamof the year. Despite this I would like to name a group of

5 YEARS AGO – 2004After an exciting first half in theA Section preliminary final andwith Old Trinity holding a two point lead over St Bernards, the boys from Essendon turned up the heat in the all importantthird quarter with 6.4 to 1.3 and with Mick Kavanagh, Dan andBen Jordon leading the way they continued the assault in thefinal quarter with a run away victory, 20.12 to 13.12. Old Trinitywith five goals in the final quarter did not lie down but the scenewas now set for a Uni Blues versus St Bernards Grand Final andthe chance for the Blues to record their first A Section Flag in 44years. Best – McIntyre, D Jordan (7), Pearson (5), Blunt, DJordan, Fielding (St Bernards) and T Van Der Venne, Buttler,D Burrows, Walsh (4), Neville, R Burrows (Old Trinity). TheField Umpires were Damian Anderson and Geoff Caulfield.Old Scotch ruined what could have been an even better day forthe Bernies when they won the Reserves’ final 16.6 to StBernards 12.6.In B Section, Collegians celebrated their return to A Section bydefeating Old Ivanhoe in what could only be described as a“hard slog” in poor conditions, the winning score, with extratime being required, Collegians 5.3 to Old Ivanhoe 3.8. It wasan even game all the way through and the scores were tied atthree quarter time, 4.1 to 3.7 with Old Ivanhoe’s inaccuracyproving costly. With the scores still tied at the siren, the extratime was applied and with Nick Baxter scoring a “dashingpoint” and James Fry snapping a miraculous goal to giveCollegians the advantage, the Lions went into shutdown modeto maintain the advantage at the final siren. Best – Shinkfield,Davidson, Hosking, Harrison, A Baxter, Dixon (Collegians)and Low, Weddle, Crowley, Clarke, Price, Bozzon (OldIvanhoe). Field Umpires were Albie Firley and MichaelSneddon. The C Section Grand Final was played at Sandringhambetween MHSOB and Caulfield Grammarians on a groundheavier than anticipated due to heavy overnight rain. MHSOBwere more adaptable in the conditions and took the earlyadvantage with 2.3 to 0.3 at quarter time. The High School boyswere more adept at bullocking the ball forward and theexperience of Bamert and Pertzel up forward was critical asthey took a 6.6 to 3.6 lead into the half time break. Each timeCaulfield were able to convert, MHSOB answered and moreand had increased the lead to 10.10 to 5.8 at the final turn. WithWidjaja and Frater in everything at ground level and BrettSinclair a good target up forward for the Grammarians,MHSOB reacted as good sides do, applied more pressure andran away with the game to win 14.12 to 6.11. Best – Campbell,Hogan, Svirskis, Bamert (4), Cassell, Limrick (MHSOB) andWidjaja, Frater, Fallu, B Sinclair, Will, Carboni (Caulfield).Field Umpires were Wayne Hinton and Peter James, TheMichael Ritterman Medalist was MHSOB’s Jayden Pertzel.

advantage with the SMS boyshoping for better things.Coach LLeennddeerrss didn’t havetoo much to worry aboutsurely? Good start. Just like last week. But this timethe wheels fell off much quicker and the run ceased. The bigger side was winning all the stoppages andfinally - hitting targets with aplomb. Scammell is aground that if you get ‘jiggy’, for want of a betterterm, you kick the ball better in the crosswind andstart using the express lane home. As the game woreon, the St Marys Salesian outfit did this and did itreally well. DDaarrrreenn HHiill ll is more than happy to end thegrand work from up field and it’s a shame he hasonly negated the ten games thus far in season ’09.DDaannnnyy AAddaammss and his partner in crime CCaammeerroonnAAddaamm were ruthless in their finishing. They are notplayers to give time and space to. An eighteen goalto four effort after that quarter time break shows thiswas a one act affair. It was a disappointing end to theseason for the Xmen. They simply had no answer tothe physical presence and were not up to thechallenge. Their time will come and D3 version 2010suits them, as they get to challenge a couple of sidesagain for the first time in their history. The oppositecan we said for St Mary’s Salesian who wereexcellent here in the second half, if not outstandingthe way they persisted with the scoring pressure.Insiders were extremely confident of a flag midseason, they took a bit of a dip at the end of the homeand away stanza but have enjoyed to really good finalwins and gain promotion. That is the first big prize. In season 2008 they were going ok early and juststopped scoring. This has not been an issue this timein as they averaged around 110 points in the regularyear and have kicked 37 goals in two finals. Theyhave added six new players since their previouscampaign and it should be noted that their bestplayer this weekend in DDaavviidd WWeesstt has played Under18’s this year. Their future seems as bright as theirjumper!

GRAND FINAL Bentleigh versus St Mary’s SalesianA la Geelong and St Kilda, we waited an eternity itseemed, well until Round 9, when our two GrandFinalists first met this year. Bentleigh at home thatday proved to score through Swinden and Wills andwere never in trouble of not getting four points. AtFerndale in round 15 the red and blues won again, this time slightly closer but both games theycomfortably held their opponents in the final term. I can’t and won’t go past Bentleigh in the final. Theweek off was a blessing for some of their older starsand they should handle the tempo of St Mary’sSalesian easily. They boast only two losses for theseason to the same side, but not this opponent.Importantly for them is their ability to finish andthey do that as well as St Mary’s Salesian. Themargin should be close and reflective of the gradeall season, let’s say 21 points.

Good luck to players and officials for the day andmay we witness a clean and skilful contest!

37THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2009VV36 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2009VV

I am starting to question in my time as D3 scribe thatwe have a curse on some finalists. For the thirdstraight year a side finishing top two has lost bothfinals and thus missed out on promotion. But don’tdespair as it seems it was happening elsewhere.Caulfield Grammarians lost yet another final andtherefore stay in C Grade for another VAFA chapter. Ithappens. Is it momentum driving this, and in thecase of the X Men who led Bentleigh for over a halfonly to get over run it happened again seven dayslater. I like St Francis Xavier as a side to watch. Theystructure themselves with the purpose to run linesand hit moving targets at all times. A player theremust feel welcome to come to training and enjoysome free flowing drills on a Tuesday night knowingthat style can be taken into a game match day. Theirresults in 2009 have shown that when they winenough possession they score big and claim fourpoints. Thirteen home and away wins in such adifficult competition was a stellar return and finalswere their reward.

St Mary’s and Salesian made a bold decision sometwo seasons ago to merge and relocate officially thewhole movement to Ferndale Park. When you seethem play it strikes you immediately the mix ofyoung and old. The club fields an Under 18 side, aclub 18 side, seniors and reserves. It’s a bigoperation. And big operations run well if they havethe right people generously giving their time ‘gratis’,with one purpose in mind.

So we had a merged club and a very new clubcontesting the right to play Bentleigh in a GrandFinal. Conditions were fine again at Scammell, hometo the now B Grade Krushers. The first term theXmen got off to a great start with players in CChhrriissVVaann DDaamm,, DDaann PPaabbttss and KKaarrll RRuussssoo well on top.The Xmen were running St Mary’s Salesian off theirfeet and made them look slow on the big openground. At quarter time it was an eleven point

At the Snakepit, the art of using the breezeeffectively can be even more important than usual, with the hill playing havoc with goal kicking evenwhen one end has a decided advantage. In the firstAlbert Park discovered this as they had nine scoringshots to three however only managed an 11 pointlead. Both sides were missing key players so theability to convert chances was at a premium. In thesecond LaTrobe then demonstrated how it shouldbe done with eight goals three to no score.Particularly impressive was their run, with Brad VanOoi not only providing dash from the middle, butconverting with long goals. In the third quarter theuniversity played a loose man in defence and AlbertPark continually played into their hands with poordelivery going forward. Oliver Winchester was arock in defence for the Falcons and Glen Ellulworked hard to lift the minor premiers, howeverthey were again unable to convert their chances. The last quarter was very even, with the Falconsable to finally score freely against the dying breeze, however LaTrobe Uni ran out the game well withDavid McMaster strong, and Leigh Coffey againshowing he is one of the recruits of the year in D4.Latrobe now advances to the grand final, whilstAlbert Park will need to take advantage of a wellearned double chance. In the reserves a seven goal effort from Justin Laniahelped LaTrobe make it a Grand Final double, as theminor premiers proved too strong for NorthBrunswick. Paul Russell who played some goodgames in the ones this year was also outstandingfor the victors, whilst veteran Dave Pizzari showedhis class for the green and gold.On Saturday Kew were determined to atone for theirperformance the previous week, and despite theSnakes displaying red hot form over the past fewweek, the Bears dazzled in the first , markingeverything and setting up a good lead with a sixgoal first quarter. Brian Cullen and Craig Hornereprised some of their form earlier in the season,

providing Kew with aformidable forward-linethat was well supplied byJeremy Fultheim andStephen Duke. In thesecond Rury Liddie andDaniel Pike lifted Richmond through the middle, and the Snakes started to give Nathan Nuske theopportunities that would allow them to move withinstriking distance at half time. The third quarter wasrelatively even, though Tim Bagnall continued toprovide a strong marking presence for the Bears, and Kew managed to eke the lead out to four goalsat the final break. In the last the Centrals threweverything at Kew, who however held firm andmoved into the preliminary final and D3 with theirfirst final win in many years.Like LaTrobe, Kew reserves made it a double with asolid win over an Albert Park side that have playedsix virtual elimination finals on end. The Bears werestronger over the ball and accordingly won theclearances that allowed the ilk of James Hoseasonand Chris Robinson to kick enough goals to win thematch

D4 TEAM OF THE YEARAs ever it was very difficult to pick the team of theyear. Forwards in particular were very prolific thisyear with several missing out who achievedimpressive totals for the season. There were alsoseveral outstanding ruckmen; however I was onlyable to squeeze two into the final side. Coach of theyear went deservedly to the playing coach of theminor premiers, Nathan Dallas, who also made avery good case to be selected as a player. Captainof the team Joseph Mclean has been fantastic forLaTrobe University this year and is certainly aleader on the field; however he is surrounded byplenty of able deputies in this side. Greg Bell isinterestingly the only player to be picked in this sidetwo years in a row.

North Brunswick v KewSunday at 11.30am at Scammell Reserve

FINALS PREVIEWSSenior Preliminary Final : Albert Park V Kew Albert Park won both meetings during the season, albeit very narrowly in the most recent. The Falconswill be hoping Justin Kane will return to providerebound off half back, and Brendan Murnane, theirleading goal-kicker, to kick a winning score. Kew willfeel a huge monkey has been lifted from their backswith the win last week, and are nearing full strength, however still have or two to return. In Bagnall, Horne, and Cullen, the Bears have a potent forward line, and ifthey get enough opportunity they could win the gamefor Kew. Accordingly, as in most games of football thebattle in the middle should decide the game. Dallas vFultheim, Maunder v Duke, McIndoe v Bell, and Evansv Bennett are all potential match-ups that could have asignificant bearing on the game. I think Albert Parkwere the minor premiers for good reason, andproviding Kane and Murnane return I favour them toadvance to the Grand Final with a six point victory.

Reserve Preliminary Final : North Brunswick v KewJames Hoseason and Donny Manoukian have both hadfantastic seasons, however were well held last week, well down on their average goals for the year. If eithercan break the shackles, they could lead their team to agrand final. Paul Donaldson and Trevor Ackland havealso been keys to their respective side’s success andwill also have a large influence on the result. It is thewily veteran and 2008 senior team of the year playerDavid Pizzari who I think will be the key to a NorthBrunswick victory by 11 points.

THIS WEEK’S GRAND FINAL PREVIEW

Oakleigh v St BernardsPlayed 3: Oakleigh has won by 75 points, 18 points, and 33 points on all 3 occasions. The Snow dogs have peaked at the perfect time. Ifthey can maintain their pressure they are a hugechance to knock off the Krushers. The Krushers starstudded midfield will be fresh after the week off withthe likes of PPaappppoonn,, SSccootttt,, MMoorriinn, and ruckmanVVaalleennttiinnii main contributors who will need to be shutdown. Man for man across the ground the Krushersare a better outfit in my opinion. Whether man for mantalent versus a spirited and ferocious teamperformance is enough to get over the line we willknow by 1.30pm Saturday. Oakleigh have been thebest side all year beating all before them making itimpossible to tip against them. Oakleigh to salute by22 points.------------------------------------------------------------------Thanks to MMaatttt OO’’NNeeii llll from UHS, MMaall CCoollee from theBullants, and JJoohhnn KKaavvaannaagghh from St Bernards forletting me know their thoughts on Under 18 footy thisyear. Joey’s JargonWell the bookies licked their lips and so did the snowdogs after their hard fought victory over the muchfavoured Northern Bullants. Its fare to say I have coppedit from the most loyal of snow dogs over the past fewdays after their deserved victory, not to mention thoseblokes with nothing better to do on that rubbish big footywebsite. Although I can’t argue with them as they aremost likely right! Oh well, as they say, any publicity isgood publicity. I’m sure that comment will keep themtalking. More importantly though, what a mouth wateringclash awaits, but first let’s see how the Snow dogs gotthe chocolates.

Prelim Final Wrap UpNorthern Bullants v St BernardsWell St Bernards certainly came out to play last Saturdaywith their defensive pressure and clogging of theBullants midfield proving to be the difference and earninga crack at Oakleigh in the Grand Final. The Bullants hadlimited chances to get it down to their bigger forwardswith the snow dog’s ferocious attacks on the footy andon their opponents when they didn’t have the pill.JJoonneessyy’’ss 3 sausage rolls in a best afield performanceproved to be a massive contributor in the low scoringmatch, with plenty of support from JJaammeess WWeeiirr andHHaarrrryy OOvveerrmmaann in an overall performance of which everyplayer could be mentioned. For a disappointed Bullants,WWiillssoonn’’ss 4 goals were a shining light.

by the Uni Blues reply. To state theobvious Uni had to pile on goalsquickly and moved TommyMaddocks forward as anothermarking option but it was to noavail as again De La put the footdown banging in 3 unansweredmajors. When Muller hit the postfrom an impossible angle with alate swinging banana kick onesensed the party tricks had begun,Kneebone then slotted his thirdafter ducking and weaving andeventually dropping the ball ontohis left boot and the fat lady let rip.The final margin really didn’tindicate how good a standard this contest was, all wouldagree this one was a cracker and I can’t wait to see arematch between these sides next year. Congratulationsto De La who move on to yet another Grand Finalappearance and commiserations to Uni Blues who afterstarting the season questionably put together a great runthat sees their side up amongst them as a true contenderin the future.

Grand Final PreviewAfter 20 rounds of a fantastic season we haveundoubtedly the two best sides in the big one. Sinceround 5 Old Xavarians and De La Salle have shared thetop two spots of the ladder with very impressive homeand away records. De La Salle finished atop with the bestattacking numbers, with the ball in your forward half asoften as it is with De La it’s no surprise that they alsoboast the best defence. Old Xavs, while not in the sameleague as far as points scored have a miserly defencethat has frustrated the best forwards in the compincluding De La Salle on two occasions already this year.A 26 point win over De La in round 1 was proven to beno fluke as The Claret and Stout stifled the De La runningmachine and kept the big #10 in Blue and Gold goallessto win the 2nd semi by 5 points. De La won their secondencounter of 2009 narrowly at Waverley Park back inJuly where the famed Xav’s defence kept the scoring lowbut couldn’t bridge the final 14 point gap.It all adds up to another classic Grand Final (who canforget the cracker between De La and St Bedes lastyear?) in which the venue holds the key to the result formine. De La Salle was super impressive last week and onthe expanses of Central Reserve will have a little toomuch toe for Old Xavs. De La Salle by 3 goals.

U19 PREMIERPreliminary Final ReviewMazenod Old Collegians played host for the VAFA U19Premier Preliminary Final at their home base at CentralReserve last week and presented a playing surface upthere with some of the best I’ve seen this season. As DeLa Salle (Blues) and Uni Blues took the field for theirwarm up my son Liam turned to me with a stunned lookon his dial and announced that it was possibly the widestground he had seen in his entire 400 odd days and thatthe De la Salle small brigade of Espinosa, Kneebone andPollard would relish the wide open wings. Uni Blues however got off to a better start with McClureand Fairbairn dominant through the guts along withLlewyn Butler sending Uni forward time and again.Reaping the rewards early Townley, Day and Weddelllooked switched on a set about applying earlyscoreboard pressure. When De La did head forwardmore often than not big Hughy stood firm controlling theairspace usually reserved for Lachlan O’Connell orStephen Muller and if it wasn’t Vickers-Willis, Maddocksor Woolley would spoil leaving Eagle or Seals to run theball out of danger. Things were looking rosy for the menin black but footy can be a cruel game and when Uni lostRuckman Ollie Robertson for the day you could see themomentum shift towards the Blue and Gold and byquarter time scores were again level. When play resumed punters were witness to adevastating show of hard running footy capped off withan awesome display from their power forwards. With UniBlues now struggling to get first use of the pill De La setabout building a lead by using the width of the ground torun away from their heavier bodied opponents beforesetting up well guided passes into their forward 50.Muller put on a goal kicking clinic and by the time theywent to the sheds it was De La by 6 goals. Some magnet shuffling from the Uni Blues coach sawVickers-Willis cast in the role of a forward and the UniBlues midfield were able to get back on top early doorsin the third term. Uni went on to record their mostproductive quarter for the game going into the ¾ timehuddle 4 goals down and not without a sniff. Those nearthe benches knew Uni had spent a large amount of petroltickets to get this close and with another lad in Herbanout for the day one could sense the relatively fresh legsof De La could be hard to keep up with. While the De Lahuddle was deathly quite those traveling North onSpringvale Rd would have heard Matt Embling instructhis charges on the virtues of accountable footy.De La started the last quarter with a goal followed closely

2009 Team Of The YearThis ridiculously hard task was made even harder bythe quality of this year’s Premier group and purveyorsof VAFA footy can look forward to seeing this talentdevelop even further in their clubs senior squads. Myinitial list of 60 players was culled late on Mondaynight and I couldn’t believe some of the talent I haveleft out of the side. Robbed is Ben McClure (UBLU),Ed Clinch (DLS) – Robbed, Ned Hunt (OT), call thecops mate, you have been robbed, Jacques Augustine(MARC), I have gone completely mad, FraserMcFarlane (OS), I’m madder than Ken Bruce. Grech,De Fontenay, McKenzie, robbed, robbed, robbed. Youget the point, the team below is the best I couldmuster and I’d tip them to win a game of footy

against any side you care to name. The missing partof the puzzle is the coach. This is a tough callbetween our top four coaches and each carriesdecent claims for coach of the year. Jon Edgar hasmanaged to keep his side at the top of the tree, ahuge effort for mine, just ask Owen Lalor. Paul Dodd(OS) has also managed to keep the Cardinals at thepointy end of the season while Dino (OX) and ouryoungest coach Matt Embling (UBLU) have raised thestandard of their sides remarkably. I’d be happy tohave my son coached by any of them but to round outthe TOTY I’ll go with Dino Dipierdomenico. I lookforward to hearing the debate rage on theseselections…enjoy! From the backline….

U19 North 1 and 2DAMO’S BALLPreliminary Final Review - North 1What a thrilling encounter of two teams eyeing a spot inthe Grand Final. The game was thrown in the balance allthe way up to the last quarter, and whilst Old Carey hadbeen the form side for the past two months, the moreexperienced Old Essendon boys got the job done tosecure their place in the Grand Final. An evenly placedmatch was given by either team, with just an 8 pointbuffer at the last change, but the Bombers kicked 4unanswered goals to crush Old Carey and warn OldCamberwell of their power. Genovesi was instrumentalwith 4 goals, whilst Troost will bring some much neededfor into the Grand Final.

Round 18 Review - North 2A preliminary final to set the tounge watering, the clashbetween Therry and Ivanhoe was nothing more than aclassic. But, in a Geelong v Bulldogs type clash, the runof Ivanhoe was not as significant as the sharp shootingof the Lions. Whilst Ivanhoe kept their neck in theencounter all the way to the last quarter, the legs ofTherry matched too strong for their magpiecounterparts, the final margin 31 points. A 2 goal burst

to open the match by Ivanhoe was their greatest lead, asTherry clawed back level at the first break. The gapstayed within 2 goals all the way until a last quarter runon by Therry secured their place in the last week offooty. Milanovic was superb after an early bump thatcaused him to go down, whilst Will Dean stood up in theruck after Lucas Ryan also succumbed to injury.

GRAND FINAL TIP - North 1Fizzle and dazzle, this match will set up a birth in theUnder 19s premier competition. Two teams evenlymatched, Old Essendon with a good record over OldCamberwell, but the minor premiers will hold thefavouritism up until the first bounce. Killworth andGenovesi will battle at either end to boot the goals, whilst Old Essendon will be expecting an all roundperformance from every member. Time and time againwe hear about the drop in momentum after a week off, therefore I believe Old Essendon will take the chocolatesand claim the North 1 premiership by 7 points.

GRAND FINAL TIP - North 2Therry and Old Geelong, a rematch of their encounter 2weeks ago. Whilst Old Geelong stole the showcomfortably last time, the Lions come off the back of a

hard fought win. Victory here will rise the winning sideto North 1, and a loss will break the heart of either team.Old Geelong, the minor premiers will dash to outrightfavourites, whilst Therry will claim the underdog status, and why wouldn’t they love it. They’ve knocked off OldGeelong once this season, and have the belief to do itagain, however a relaxing 15 day break could work in

the cats’ favour. With metalware on the line, losses inthe Seniors and Reserves on the weekend will giveTherry extra incentive. Finals atmosphere at it’s best, and the two best teams face off. Match momentum iseverything, and Therry will start with it after their prelimvictory, and snatch the cup out of Old Geelong’s hands,by 5 points.

DDee LLaa SSaalllleeWell I got this one wrong as Old Brighton were able tobounce back this week to defeat a gallant De La Salle by20 points to give the Brighters another crack at thegiants (Old Melburnians). Old Brighton had a real fighton their hands but just had a touch more class when itcounted as P. Healey and S. Roney dominated aroundthe ground. Both sides had an even spread of goal kickers but thegame was mainly won in defence. T. Naughtin and T.East battled hard for De La but it just wasn’t enough tobook themselves a spot in the Grand Final. A terrificeffort none the less by De La Salle this year fielding asecond side and pushing for a Grand Final spot.

GGrraanndd FFiinnaall :: OOlldd MMeellbbuurrnniiaannss vvss.. OOlldd BBrriigghhttoonnThis really is David vs. Goliath as The Melburniansare overwhelming favourites to take out the flag. SSoouutthh 22RReevviieeww PPrreelliimmiinnaarryy FFiinnaall:: AAjjaaxx vvss.. OOlldd MMeennttoonniiaannssFor Ajax it is all over. Yes the Rampaging OldMentonians have knocked the Jackers out in straightsets as the recorded a 13 goal victory to book a spot onthat final day in September. As I expected the Mentonians just used their fire powerup forward to their advantage with a wide spread ofgoal kickers and J.Lumsden kicking 6, the task for thejackers was too great to answer. Prolific ball usage by M. Campbell & E. Macquire setthe standard from the first bounce as they wonclearance after clearance and won stoppage afterstoppage which saw the pair share best on groundhonors.

GGrraanndd FFiinnaall:: HHaammppttoonn RRoovveerrss vvss.. OOlldd MMeennttoonniiaannssWell it’s finally here the big dance. Hampton deserves tobe the favourite but I certainly won’t be surprised if theMentonians get up for one almighty victory that would beone for the history books. Both teams have their forward weapons, for the RoversN. Fallon & M. Innes have booted 93 between them thisseason and for the Mentonians L. Hull & J. Lumsden havebooted 83 between them with lesser games behind them. This is going to be one ripping contest that is sure to pulla crowd! I’m going to pick an upset with the Mentoniansgetting up by 5 goals in a historic win for the club. Thankyou to the South 2 section this season you have providedcoaches, parents and supporters with some rippinggames of footy in season ’09.
