W e are the largest local pork producer, the largest inves-tor in the Romanian agricul-

ture and we are proud of the quality of our products, manufactured from domestic pork, coming from pigs grown in Romania, with Romanian feeds. We are proud of our predeces-sors, those who made Comtim brand into a synonym of quality and taste, and we want to reposition this tradi-tional brand, so much loved by the inhabitants of the Western part of the country – and not only – to its right-ful place: a national, strong brand val-ued by everybody and a potential ex-port brand on the European Union’s common market.

It is time for performance. The fu-ture of the meat industry is heading towards an integrated concept, to-wards vertical integration, from farm to fork, where the key advantage lies with the consumer, due to the guar-antee of the value added product. „Together, we shall stay the best!“

Dear friends,

I have now the extraordinary opportunity to address all of you who are part of the big Smithfield family in Romania – both my old col-leagues from Smithfield Ferme, and my new colleagues from Smith-field Prod and Agroalim. This year, we are opening a new chapter of our journey together, more powerful and more united, with the cer-tainty of having stood up against the storms of a very riotous local and global business environment, and found ourselves, at the end of these trials, victorious and confident about our further success.

development and diversification of the product range. We find ourselves at the dawns of a new stage: that of development building – an absolute and harmonious development, based on valuable experiences gathered so far, on our quality people, on very performing safety and management systems implemented over the years – including the ISO 22 000 food safety certification obtained towards the end of last year.

We are and we want to be the first in everything we do. Smithfield Ro-mania is not just a company, but it is also a big family and a success story –

whether in business, in the care for the environment and for the communities where we live, or in the care for our children and their education.

“Be one of us!”, “Back to school”, “Your World! Clean!”, “Helping Hun-gry Homes”, “Earth Day”, “Water Monitoring Day”, and many others – are programs developed by Smith-field in which many of you have vol-unteered in order to make a change, to make a difference. This is why, to-gether, I am certain that we shall stay the best!

health and Safety

Pollutant-free working environment

One of Smithfield’s values and major concerns is to provide a safe and healthy working environment for our employees. it is therefore critical to ensure health and safety and to make continuous invest-ments in this field.

The most recent analyses on physi-cal (noise) and chemical pollutants (ammonia and dust) conducted by our colleagues from Smithfield Ferme, in collaboration with Timis Public Health Directorate, at the farms from Parta and Padureni and at Padureni Feedmill, fall within this effort. These measurements are part of an ongoing program for the monitoring of work conditions and pollutants and are pe-riodically conducted by Smithfield’s teams of specialists, independently as well as in collaboration with central and local regulators.

Following the analyses conducted in Parta and Padureni farm, it was established that the level of ammo-nia and vegetal dust is below the maximum allowed values. Parta and Padureni are two of Smithfield’s old farms modernized, which were con-sidered representative in terms of their headcounts. The analyses conducted at Padureni Feedmill recommended the taking of additional collective and individual protection measures regarding phonic pollutants (noise), measures which were implemented immediately, thus ensuring the health and safety of Smithfield employees.

As Smithfield’s management is permanently concerned with ensur-ing an optimum and non-polluting working environment, we would like to invite you to send your sugges-tions and observations regarding health and safety at the following e-mail address: [email protected]

M y first task when I started work-ing for Agroalim seven years ago, as an Import Assistant, was

to record all the company’s import opera-tions. I want to thank my colleague Marina Ionel for the help, patience and detailed ex-planations she gave me then. I arrived with a solid theoretical base (I was a university assistant within the Faculty of International Economic Relations - ASE) but I quickly found out that the business today means fast reaction speed, a great deal of expe-rience and a lot of work.

I believe that the entire activity of the company begins here, within the Pur-chasing Department. Our role is not only to order the merchandise, but also to iden-tify business opportunities. We work with strong partners and we take pride in the fact that we have the experience necessary to buy “anything and from anywhere”.

We are five within the Purchasing De-partment of Agroalim (Ioana, Marina, Madalina, Mihai and Oana) and our role is to make sure that our sales colleagues have something to sell every day. Every-body starts with the beginning (the records I talked about above), as it is essential that the products are understood in details, as well as the types of operations conducted with each supplier.

One essential aspect of our activity is the quality of the products purchased. Buying

is easy, while the price is only the tenth part (not always the most important one) of a purchasing agreement. However, buying quality products, for good prices, in due time and which also sell well, is totally different. This is what we try to do on a daily basis. It is not easy, (we have a saying that: “We haven’t seen everything yet and many things can still happen”), but with attention, work and perseverance, any dif-ficult situation can be solved.

I have talked about one of the two halves of my life. The other half, at least as equal-ly important, is my family. I have two boys (Mihnea, 7 and half years old, and Dani, 3 years old) who complete my life. There is nothing more beautiful than to arrive at home after a day of work and be welcomed cheerfully and highly energetically by two goblins who scream, “Mommy, it’s so good to have you home!”, and then you forget about tiredness and, after you gather the toys spread around the entire house, you prepare dinner for them and make some time to be with them.

In the little spare time I still have, I like reading (Gabriel Garcia-Marquez, Mario Vargas Llosa – as well as works by impor-tant economists). I was born in Brasov so I have been skiing since I was little, man-aging to create so far (with the help of my father) two skiers – my husband and elder son – while the youngest one follows.

A t the end of his visit, Am-bassador Gitenstein joined Smithfield’s team of volun-

teers in their planting campaign of 50 trees on the land in front of Vinga Feedmill, part of Smithfield’s social responsibility and environmental protection program. Within this campaign, since the beginning of this program, over 15,000 trees have been planted in various locations from Ti-mis and Arad County.

“I am very proud and impressed to see what Smithfield Ferme has achieved at Vinga. It is an impressive example of US expertise and technol-ogy, implemented by a local team to the benefit of the company, of the community and of the Romanian farmers. Investments like that made by Smithfield are key to increasing value added in the Romanian agri-culture”, said Ambassador Gitenstein.

“Smithfield Romania is not only one of the biggest foreign invest-ments in our country, it is also a successful example of the coopera-tion between Romanian and US professionals in the agricultural, animal husbandry and food field, a cooperation which developed a business in compliance with the highest international standards, in the field of food safety and envi-ronment, as well as in the business environment”, declared Bogdan Mi-hail, CEO of Smithfield Romania.

“Smithfield has become part of the communities where we operate, valorizing and supporting the cul-ture, traditions and hopes of the in-habitants of the Western part of the country. We will further invest in the prosperity and economic security of this region, through our support pro-grams for the local farmers, as well

as our social responsibility and cul-tural development programs”, Mi-hail concluded.

Vinga Feedmill is unique in Roma-nia, in terms of equipment and tech-nical performances, among the most modern ones in Europe and across the world, the technology used for this project being also a first for Eu-rope – in terms of how the construc-tion was made.

The construction of Vinga Feed-mill began in December 2006, and was inaugurated 18 months later, being one of the biggest Greenfield investments in Romania. The con-struction at Vinga covers 20 ha of land, 350,000 hours of work being necessary to complete the project. Vinga Feedmill has a weekly pro-duction capacity of 8,000 tons of pig feeds, based on own recipes.

Smithfield Ferme obtained the Food Safety Management System Certification

a t the end of last year, Smithfield Ferme successfully implemented

the Food Safety Management System and obtained the iSO 22000:2005 Cer-tificate, following the audit and certifi-cation by TUV austria Romania.

By implementing the requirements of iSO 22000 standard we can say that, in terms of food safety, we meet all the requirements to provide safe products for the consumer’s health, up to the last stage of swine production.

The implementation of iSO 22000:2005 standard provides the company with an organizational framework in order to identify, assess and control any po-tential food safety hazard by specific operation and control procedures.

With a view to continuously improv-ing the production processes, once the implementation and certification of the Food Safety Management System was achieved according to iSO 22000, a de-tailed analysis of the production process was also conducted in every farm and feedmills by the Food Safety Team. Fol-lowing this analysis, a number of checks and monitoring actions were introduced throughout and at the end of the produc-tion process, and forms were developed to register the results of these checks.

n Article by Mircea Bitca – project coordinator for the implementation of ISO 9001, 14001, 18001 and 22000

The implementation and certification of this Food Safety system, as well as the other ones already implemented and certified, in terms of Quality, Environ-ment, Occupational Health and Safety, does not mean that our effort to main-tain and improve them will stop here. A program of internal audits and checks of the working points will be developed in the following period to collect as much information as possible in order to raise awareness of the employees and create a professional, organized and perform-ing working environment.

One of the benefits of the audits and checks is that they support the employ-ees, as information is collected about the actual functioning of the processes on site. This is why the involvement of all the employees is required and desir-able, as it can only lead to improving the performances of the company and, im-plicitly, of each and every one of us.

COMTIM chop in the ovenProduct tasting

This month, Smithfield Prod launched some new recipes: 11 assortments of sausages and 7 assortments of highly seasoned forcemeat balls.

Smithfield Prod invested 3.5 mil. USD in technological upgrade

R apid refrigeration is a refrigera-tion method for foods, pork in

this case, at a low temperature, safe in terms of preventing bacterial pro-liferation.

With this investment, by transiting the carcasses in tunnels with temper-atures between -18 and –24 °C, for 90 minutes, the pork achieves the opti-mum parameters so as to be safely kept and subsequently consumed.

Rapid cooling of pork carcasses can also be useful to processors as an additional method to control the mi-crobial proliferation and, implicitly, the increase of food safety as regards basic pork products.

Smithfield Prod is the largest slaugh-terhouse in Romania, with a process-ing capacity of 600 heads per hour, be-ing located on the former COMTIM premises. Smithfield Prod values are

food safety, responsibility towards the environment, understanding of the lo-cal specificity and support for the local communities where it operates, con-tinuous development of the technolo-gies used and creation of a pleasant working environment for the employ-ees. Smithfield Prod is ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Management system and ISO 22000: 2005 Food Safety Ma-nagement system certified.

Smithfield Prod has completed the technological upgrade works in the rapid refrigeration area of pork carcasses resulted from the slau-ghtering process. The investment amounted to USD 3.5 million, the new refrigeration area covering 755 m2. For almost 4 months, 7 contrac-ting companies have been involved in this project.

The current investment adds up to more than USD 67 million, amounts allocated by Smithfield Prod

over the last 5 years only for the modernizing of the production capacities of former COMTiM.

Contest of recipes A winner will be chosen every month, and the winning recipe will be posted on the Intranet and in the next issue of the newsletter.

• 2 pieces of COMTIM pork chop• 300g bacon• 150g cheese• 2 tomatoes,• 1l milk• salt, pepper, butter

The chops are kept in milk for one hour for ten-derness, dried, cut, coated with butter on the in-side, then salt and pepper are added according to taste. Sliced bacon is put on the inside, as well as sliced cheese, a slice of tomato and a slice of bell pepper. Salt and pepper is added according to taste. Cook in the oven for 45-50 min. Serve warm with rice and vegetables and mushrooms.

What does your activity as “Industrial Sales Coordinator – SE Region” within SFD Prod imply?

Our sales department has a strong and united team, under the careful supervi-sion of Mr. Emilio Becker, within which we complete each other so as to successfully cope with the unpredicted situations arising in the difficult process of selling. My activity as Industrial Sales Coordina-tor implies the following: establishing the marketing strategies, developing and maintaining the relationships with the customers; attracting new customers; collecting market information about the products and the activity of the competi-

interview with liviu Florea, Industrial Sales Coordinator – SE Region

„Every day isdifferent and does not imply a certain cliché”

W e know that the difference betwe-en a company and a success-

ful company is given by the quality of services. This is why we decided to segregate the operational and sales ac-tivities as of 2011, so as to enable a better focus on each of them. The sales force, which was activating on several distribution channels, is now 100% dedicated to each channel. Most of the Branch Managers have decided to return to their “first love” and become fully devoted to it, from the new positi-on of Area Sales Manager which means a relief of administrative and logistics responsibilities, but a wider coverage area and effort focusing on the favorite distribution channel. Meanwhile, in the new Business Unit Manager position,

the former Regional Managers are given nationwide coverage responsibilities on certain categories of essential products

for company profitability. Promotions to the Branch Manager positions occurred also in most branches.

For our colleagues with increased authority but who did not previously be-nefit from training, we will organize two training programs in February: an inter-nal one, provided by the Logistics, Finan-cial, Quality and HR departments, and an external one, on “Management Skills”, in collaboration with Dale Carnegie.

Thus, we begin 2011 with the deter-mination to take the company on profit and position Agroalim as leader among the successful distribution companies in Romania.

tion; conducting market survey studies; periodically analyzing the sales perfor-mances against what was planned.

What was your biggest professional achievement/challenge?

I can say there were many challenges, but the biggest of all was exceeding the limit of 1,200 tons sold per month, which I thought it was unachievable a long time ago.

How is a day of work for you?Every day is different, but begins with

a briefing regarding the production plan for the respective day, so as to be able to know whether the production is covered

by orders and, if it is not, what products we should focus on so as to sell them and not refrigerate them, which would mean losses for the company.

A usual sales day begins at 8 in the morning, by visiting certain customers – without whom an increase in the vol-ume of merchandise sold cannot hap-pen within the sales process.

Unpredicted problems arise every day in the sale of fresh pork and they put a strain on you and keep you in the boil – problems like refusal of merchandise on quality-related grounds, reduced validity dates, merchandise in excess of ordered quantities [this results from our desire to sell more]; merchandise which does not arrive in time to the customer for transportation reasons, sometimes even losses in the order made by the custom-ers; weighting differences; all these must be solved and require time and tens of phone calls a day.

How is Liviu Florea when he is not working?

I am a normal person, spending almost all my time with my family and particu-larly my little boy.

In the second half of this year, we want to launch a portal of Agroalim com-munity to work as a communication bridge between us all, regardless of our location across the country. As this is a process concerning us all, we need your pragmatism and creativity to cre-ate its contents. How can we make you visit first the Agroalim website, and only then, if you remember, Facebook? What information about your job and company would you like it to include? If we were to create a “spare time” section, what would you be interested in finding out? Would you participate in an online chess or backgammon championship? Would a forum help? And so on…We are looking forward to your sugges-tions at [email protected]. Don’t forget! It’s ok to go with “out of the box” ideas – innovation is one of Agroalim’s values!

How is a day of your life, as a veterinar-ian at BACOVA?

I have worked for the company for more than two years and as a farm vet-erinarian since December 2nd, 2008. Ev-ery day begins with setting the activities for the respective day on the two farm sectors (nursery and gestation). Later, throughout the day, depending on the situations and problems, I try to find a solution in the shortest time possible and with the best results. You are the veterinarian of one of the biggest Smithfield-owned farms. What does that mean to you?

The possibility to work in one of the biggest Smithfield-owned farms brings me first of all the satisfaction of practic-ing in the field chosen, while also en-abling a professional development.

How easy/difficult is it to be a veteri-narian?

Practicing this profession is not always easy, but it cannot be difficult either, if you are passionate about your work. The most frequent problems we face at the farm are the taking of the most ef-ficient decisions from a qualitative and economic point of view regarding the treatments to be followed. What measures should be taken so that the sector of activity would de-velop?

Throughout my two years of activity, I had many memorable moments, one of them being my recent appointment as a veterinarian for a second farm, which for me is a recognition of my work within the company.

What about the biggest challenge/achievement?

After graduating, getting a job in a farm with intensive animal growing sys-tem, of which I did not know much, was a great challenge for me and is currently my biggest professional achievement.

How do you manage to create an op-timum working environment for each and every employee?

I work with 3 employees, of which only one has specialized educational back-ground, while the other two have to learn the sanitary-veterinary maneuvers and techniques within the farm; and I have to admit that they are handling this quite well. In order to create an optimum working environment, I always set clear tasks and provide them with technical support in achieving these tasks. What kind of relationship do you have with the employees?

My relationship with all the employees is a professional one, but for any personal problem they face and which is reflected in their activity I am open to a discussion and I always try to support them.

„Performance is not only a word in the dictionary“

P erformance: a word we often hear lately, in all speeches. What I think was forgotten is that it

depends on us, on our work, perse-verance and trust for the performance to be more than a word: to become a reality.

I started in 2006 as a veterinarian in Pădureni farm. After acquiring direct experience in working with animals, I worked as an epidemiological doc-tor for two years at Ciacova farm and area epidemiological doctor as of the end of 2007, taking care of 15 farms, of which 2 are sow farms.

After 5 years of experience within SFD Ferme, when I attended many

specialization trainings and tried to always keep up to date with the latest research in the field, I am in charge of the production department of Smith-field farms as of November 2010.

For me, performance starts with a lot of work, along with perseverance and openness to everything new. Smithfield is the ideal place where professional development and career performance combine with job per-formance.

If you are ambitious, you want to continuously learn and you are not afraid of getting involved body and soul in everything that you do, every-thing is possible – and this is not only

a slogan! In addition, the different internal training programs to foster the professional development of the specialized staff within Smithfield Ferme are a real help and motivation for continuous performance.

In my professional activity, per-formance is often synonymous to ensuring the «bio-security» of our farms. It is a permanent concern for keeping the animals’ health, by con-tinuing to strictly comply with the bio-security plan, for healthy ani-mals, with performing genetics. The internal bio-security plan is in line with all the current Romanian and European Union regulations in the field of animal health, and is the key to maintaining the animals’ health.

As for the medium-term objectives of the production department – we want to improve our production in-dex, as well as the EFFICIENCY and profitability indexes. In a word: we want to be increasingly more per-forming!

n The competition named “Tourna-ment of the Brave Butchers” aimed at awarding the best butcher employed with Smithfield Prod. The level of in-volvement in the competition was maximum, just like the emotions of the participating colleagues. Follow-ing a harsh jury decision, the 1st prize, consisting of a laptop, was awarded to Mr. Sandulescu Adrian, 2nd prize to Mr. Opris Nicolae, who received an au-

dio system and 3rd prize consisting of a mobile telephone to Mr. Lica Flavius. We congratulate and thank all the participants who proved that we can count on a true team of professionals.

n The party was held inside the new canteen and started with its inaugura-tion. We have every reason to believe that it was a successful one, but we also have some proofs in images.

On “Meat Industry Day”, at mid August last year, Smithfield Prod organized two events to the benefit of the non-administrative employees: a butch-ering contest and a barbecue party – own production.

a t Agroalim, Your World? Clean! is also the first social responsibil-ity program for the children of

the employees, being very well received by all those involved, whether kids or adults. The program is simple, inter-esting, playful and also consistent with Smithfield’s commitment to environ-mental protection, being adjusted so as to be implemented in every Agroalim branch. All the employees’ children aged between 7 and 13 years received a fold-er and an educational brochure on en-vironmental protection to read together with their parents. Then they were given a challenge: an invitation to the compe-tition: the children could write a compo-sition about the environment/environ-mental protection and/or make decora-tive items out of recycled materials as in-ventive as possible and… they won!

The items selected could then be ad-mired in Agroalim headquarters, as well as in the headquarters of Smithfield

Group companies, where similar com-petitions and exhibitions with the chil-dren’s creations were organized.

The program of information and de-velopment of responsible civic behaviors will also be continued this year, under the aegis of the national initiative Your World? Clean! initiated by PRAIS Foun-dation, with the support of the Ministry of Environment and of the School In-spectorate of the Municipality of Bucha-rest. This is why we are also launching an invitation to participate in the new edi-tion of the competition on items made of recycled materials Your World? Clean! 2011 with the works developed by our little artists – children of the employees of Smithfield Group. We are looking forward to receiving their creations at the headquarters of Smithfield Ferme, Smithfield Prod and Agroalim.

Our colleagues from Smithfield Ferme participated last October, in the com-mune of Jimbolia, in the public harvest-ing of a reference lot of 10 hectares culti-vated with Pioneer hybrid corn and organically fertilized by Smithfield Ferme.

RECORD CROPS with ORGaNiC FERTilizERS

Smithfield Ferme:

T his is the third consecutive year when Smithfield Ferme orga-nizes this experiment, which

proves our constant concern for the promotion of modern agriculture. The benefits of organic fertilizers are once again reconfirmed, through the significant results obtained from harvesting the lots organically fertil-ized by our specialists – 12 tons per hectare, values which exceed the re-sults from the lots cultivated without fertilization or chemically fertil-ized”, declares Ovidiu Timbota, agri-cultural director of Smithfield Ferme.

Following the harvesting of the lots cultivated with Pioneer hybrid corn and organically fertilized, record crops in excess of 12 tons/hectare were obtained.

The event is part of Smithfield Fer-me’s program to promote modern

agriculture, achieved by means of organic fertilizers, developed in part-nership with Pioneer Company and under the supervision of the Office for Pedological and Agrochemical Studies from Timis.

The event was attended by Re-gional Manager Miki Babuscov, on behalf of Pioneer Company, the land owner, Mr. Eugen Baziliuc, repre-sentatives of the National Environ-mental Guard and the National En-vironmental Agency, local authori-ties and farmers.

“We are honored by the partner-ship with Smithfield Ferme with which, year by year, we prove the combined efficiency of our prod-ucts and their constant support for the Romanian farmer”, declared Miki Babuscov, Regional Manager of Pioneer.

n every year Smithfield Ferme fertilizes several thousands of hectares with organic fertilizer, applied with the safest and most modern technologies of injec-tion and scarification, according to plans and analyses which de-termine the optimum quantity of fertilizer required for the crop, for each and every parcel of land.

n These plans and analyses are authorized and issued by the Office for Pedological and Ag-rochemical Studies, a technical specialized body within the Min-istry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

modern agriculture, achieved by means of organic fertilizers.

Excellence Award for Environmental Protec-tion and Community Involvement in 2010

l ast September, the US-based parent-company, Smithfield

Foods, awarded our colleagues from Smithfield Ferme an Excellence Award for Environmental Protec-tion and Community Involvement. The award, in the amount of USD 2,000, was donat-ed to the support centre for children with special educational needs (C.E.S) „Pentru un zâmbet de co-pil” in Masloc village, Ti-mis County.

“This award motivates us to further develop these projects and launch new ones, so as to help the young generation to breathe a cleaner air and have a greener planet”, declared Mr. Bog-dan Mihail, CEO of Smithfield Ro-mania.

The Smithfield Ferme project was developed for one year and included tree planting campaigns, trainings on the environment and selective waste collection, a number of infor-mational, educational and volun-teering actions conducted under the aegis of the “Earth Week”, water test-ing and monitoring actions.

“Environment and community involvement are essential com-ponents of Smithfield’s CSR and

sustainable develop-ment programs and we are proud of our achievements in Ro-mania. You have a model of community involvement which can become a model for other companies

in the Smithfield family”, declares David Townsend, Environmental Affairs, Smithfield Foods.

The awards, granted annually by the management of Smithfield Foods, were created to recognize the activity of the Smithfield subsidiaries and their staff in the prevention of pollution and intensification of en-vironmental protection through in-novative projects. The projects were assessed according to several criteria such as: environmental impact, so-cial significance, originality and in-novation, as well as project transfer-ability to any other group subsidiary.

Smithfield Ferme’s Green Campaign results in 2010

Smithfield Ferme’s waste selec-tive collection and recycling pro-gram, started last August, has gen-erated a significant participation and, according also to the slogan of this in-ternal campaign – “We collect selectively and select collectively” – we managed to make a difference and show that Smithfield Ferme’s

employees are also committed and responsible citizens. As a result of the program, around 4 tons of pa-per and one ton of plastic materials

were recycled during the four months and a half remained from last year. The Green Cam-paign will be continued this year, hoping to generate as many supporters as possible.

With the “Helping Hungry Homes” program, implemented by Smithfield Prod ever since 2009, we had the opportunity to donate in 2010 more than 4.500 kg of pork and pork prod-ucts to more than 17 different organizations from Timisoara and the surrounding, which take care of persons in social risk situations, supporting them to increase the quality of the life of their beneficiaries.

“Helping Hungry Homes Pro-gram“ contributed also in 2010 to increasing the quality of life of adults with intellectual dis-abilities, beneficiaries of “Pentru Voi” Foundation. This program contributed to providing a daily warm meal for 138 adults with intellectual disabilities, benefi-ciaries of the services provided by “Pentru Voi” Foundation. More than in the previous years, Smith-

field Prod understood this need and responded promptly to the requests by providing fresh pork products several times a week. These were cooked in the Foun-dation’s canteen and served in the two day centers for adults with intellectual disabilities, lo-cated in Freidorf neighborhood: “Împreună” Day Center and “Ladislau Tacsi” Day Center.

“Even though some of our beneficiaries’ families have financial difficulties, they are happy that their children are provided with a good meal by „Pentru Voi”. This is also due to Smithfield Prod, which continues to support the pro-vision of a healthy, quality meal, to the most excluded of the excluded – adults with intellectual disabilities from Timişoara,” said the officials of Pentru Voi Foundation.

In the period June – Sep-tember 2010, Helping Hungry Homes, a program inspired by the best practice model im-plemented in Smithfield Prod ever since 2009, was promoted through working meetings at the local level, as part of a pro-motion tour, in all Agroalim branches. Thus, we managed to start this corporate responsibi-lity program in all the branches, based on a social component, a program with an extraordinary social impact, representative for the application of the valu-es underpinning Smithfield’s working philosophy, througho-ut the world.

As a result hereof, at the end of 2010 the program has been 100% implemented in 4 Agroa-lim branches: Buftea, Cluj, Baia Mare and Bacau, while it is in a contracting stage in all the other branches. In 2010, Agro-alim donated over 4,473 kg of food products to persons in so-cial risk situations. In this period,

we provided food products for more than 8,000 beneficiaries of social services, by means of several local partners, including, among others: Fundatia Roma-na pentru Copii, Comunitate si Familie, Cluj; Caritas Association and Sfantul Stelian Association from B ucharest; Speranta Foun-dation from Baia Mare or Lumi-na Association from Bacau.

This program created the ne-cessary platform for Agroalim to become a more responsible member in the local commu-nity in all the branches where it operates.

I thank my colleagues who, together with me, manage this program on a daily basis, at the local level: Alina – Buftea, Ovi-diu – Cluj, Violeta – Bacau and Petru – Baia Mare, the branch managers who understood the program importance and all the departments which support this program and contribute di-rectly or indirectly to this bene-faction action. o ur colleagues from Smithfield Ferme and Smithfield Prod,

together with 50 children from the General School of Barsa, Arad County, and the General School of Utvin, Timis County, tested the wa-ters of Canalul Morilor river and the waters resulting from the treatment process of Smithfield Prod’s treat-ment station, within the interna-tional program “World Water Moni-toring Day”.

This teaching-educational activity was conducted last November, be-

ing already at its third edition, as an experiment with the role of raising the awareness of the young genera-tion regarding the protection of wa-ter resources and the importance of environmental protection.

In Arad County, 30 pupils from the General School of Barsa, to-gether with representatives of Smithfield Ferme’s Environmen-tal department, tested the water of Canalul Morilor river. The event was also attended by the mayor of Barsa, Mr. Avram Ciev, representa-

at the initiative of Smithfield Ferme and Smithfield Prod

tives of Crisuri Romanian Waters, as well as professors of the local school. Within the same period, 20 5th graders from Utvin School with 1st to 8th grades (Sanmihaiu Roman commune), Timis Coun-ty, accompanied by an educator, tested the water resulted from the treatment process within Smith-field Prod’s treatment station. The event was organized as an open lesson with discussions about the importance of preserving the nat-ural resources and, with the help of the testing kits made available, a series of parameters on quality water were monitored.
