So much has happened since our last issue of Whistling Teal in July 2019. The year has woven itself into a beautiful tapestry of interconnected events; enhancing the vibrancy of our University. These include SNU being chosen as an ‘Institution of Eminence’ and being the recipient of the NAAC, ‘A’ grade. These positive accomplishments reflect upon the strength of the entire community at SNU - from our students, professors, guards, librarians, DH staff and administrative personnel - worked in solidarity to make this a possibility.

Our University has also been expanding. The School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SoHSS) now boasts of an Archaeology Laboratory in the D Block. A new Data Centre has been set-up to meet the increasing requirement of computing power, and offer high availability of IT services to the University. These are just a few of the year’s highlights, and the issue reveals several more.

The year saw our students shine brighter than ever on all fronts; academic and extracurricular. The results of the 5th OUR Conference are a testament to the collaborative effort of students and teachers. It is truly a reflection of the University’s rigorous focus on research at the undergraduate level. It is worthy of note that students also won prestigious awards like BIRAC-SRISTI: GYTI 2019 and Smart India Hackathon. The flurry of activity has been great this year with student-led clubs also putting their best foot forward. The campus has witnessed many high-intensity talks, workshops, and electrifying events in the past six months. These include the HR Conclave, Business Conclave MOQSH 2019, TEDxShivNadarUniversty, and Spotlight 2019, to name a few. Read more about these events in the Campus Beat section. This is just one of the three parts of the Whistling Teal. The Campus Buzz section, on the other hand, takes the reader deep into the everyday happenings and special events of the University.

These include the exciting trek at Hampta pass and the three-day intra-college fest Cascade. The Media section shall fill your heart with pride, a Whistling Teal features a brief collage of headlines that SNU made across national media.

These are just a few things amongst the many that this edition of Whistling Teal brings to you. We hope you enjoy this short stroll down memory lane where we look back at that the unique assortment of experiences SNU affords. It has been a pleasure to compile these events so we hope reading it will be as enjoyable.

HIGHLIGHTS Shiv Nadar University has been recommended as an ‘Institution Of Eminence’ by the Ministry of Human Resource and Development, Government of India. The University is among the 20 shortlisted institutes that have been given the prestigious recommendation by the University Grants Commission (UGC). Shiv Nadar University Gets ‘A’ Grade Accreditation by NAAC

Mr. Shikhar Malhotra, Pro Chancellor, Shiv Nadar University; Executive Director, HCL Corporation; Vice Chairman, HCL Healthcare; Trustee, Shiv Nadar Foundation; and Trustee, The Habitats Trust, inaugurated the Shiv Nadar University Data Center to meet the increasing requirement of computing power, and offer high availability of IT services and uptime of mission critical applications.

Shiv Nadar University has been ranked amongst the top three in the renowned Outlook-iCARE India Universities Rankings 2019. These rankings for Top 50 Private State Universities take into account different parameters, which make them comprehensive, and a strong indicator of the progress made by private universities. Faculty Student Ratio (FSR), Faculty with Ph.D. (FWP), Papers Per Faculty (PPF), Citations Per Paper (CPP) and Inclusiveness & Diversity (ID) are the parameters for rankings. With an overall score of 62.14, Shiv Nadar University ranked third on the list.

GreenIPCore, an Atal Incubation Centre- Shiv Nadar University - incubated startup has been awarded the Most Promising Startup of 2019 by the India Electronics and NB Semiconductor Association (IESA) at the Aerospace and Defense Conference held in Bangalore. Dr. C.N. Ashwath Narayana, Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Higher Education, IT, BT and S&T, Government of Karnataka; Dr. E.V. Ramana Reddy, IAS, Additional Chief

Secretary, Department of IT, BT and S&T, Government of Karnataka; and Mr. Dana Kursh, Consul General, Consulate of Israel presented the award. GreenIPCore is a technology startup and develops soft digital IPs with a high stable feature. It will enable the development of reliable and non-corruptible chips and silicon devices. The technology will be key to building reliable solutions for space, nano-satellites, aerospace, automotive and IoT sectors.

GreenIPCore Awarded the Most Promising Startup of 2019

The Department of History inaugurated the much talked about Archaeology Laboratory. The new lab was conceived of as a space where students will learn certain lab-associated archaeological methods, such as classification and documentation. The current display is intended as a teaching tool to introduce students to different types of artefacts and ceramics produced over time. This will also function as a space for curating already existing collections, as well as those that can be built with our faculty archaeologists and fellow researchers in future projects.

New Archaeology Lab Inaugurated

Shiv Nadar University is the first Indian university to get the ‘Partnership 2020’ grant. ‘Partnership 2020’ is a recent U.S.A.-India higher education research collaboration initiative to build research partnerships between Indian and the US institutions in key 21st century fields. Administered by the University of Nebraska, Omaha (UNO), the partnership enables the US universities to conduct joint research with their Indian counterpart institutions.

As part of the opportunity, a ‘Dialogue on Joint Research and Internationalization’ was conducted at Shiv Nadar University on 15 July 2019. The delegates from the US Embassy included Prof. Patrick McNamara, UNO; Mr. Conrad Turner, US Embassy, Cultural Affairs Officer; Ms. Anubhooti Arora, US Embassy.

As part of the discussion Prof. Patrick McNamara elaborated on ‘Opportunities in Partnership 2020’, which was followed by an experience sharing session by Dr. Harpreet Arora, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Shiv Nadar University. Dr. Arora has recently received a grant under the US-India ‘Partnership 2020’. The Dialogue was followed by an Open Discussion on ‘Internationalization, Joint Research, and Rankings’ led by Prof. Rupamanjari Ghosh, Vice Chancellor, Shiv Nadar University, and Prof. McNamara of UNO.

Shiv Nadar University and leading research institute, Jawaharlal Nehru Center for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), jointly organized a symposium on ‘Emerging Materials’ from 8-9 November, 2019 in Bangalore. The symposium was attended by a team of faculty and Ph.D. students from both the institutions. The symposium’s chief patrons Bharat Ratna, Prof. CNR Rao, Linus Pauling Research Professor and Honorary President, JNCASR; and Prof. Rupamanjari Ghosh, Vice Chancellor, Shiv Nadar University, delivered the opening remarks. The seminar focused on research in the field of ‘Energy and Environment’ and ‘Soft and Biomaterials’.

Prof. Rupamanjari Ghosh shared the dais with honorable President of India, Sh. Ram Nath Kovind during the keynote session at the 15th FICCI Higher Education Summit 2019 on 28th November 2019. Being the Co-chair, FICCI Higher Education Committee, Prof. Ghosh also delivered the Vote of Thanks at the end of the Summit.

Prof. Rupamanjari Ghosh was a speaker at the India-Australia International Education and Research Workshop jointly organized by the Government of India’s Ministry of Human Resource and Development, and the Australian Government’s Department of Education on 22 November 2019. Prof. Ghosh was part of the panel organized during the workshop and spoke on ‘Improving Research Impact for World Class Institutions and Translating Research into Innovation’.

Prof. Rupamanjari Ghosh was invited to attend the round table dinner discussion on the topic ‘The Future of University Research: Looking ahead to 2040’. The invitation was extended by Prof. Ian Jacobs, President and Vice Chancellor, University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia on 17 December 2019.

Prof. Rupamanjari Ghosh was a panelist at the Discussion ‘Mentoring Women in Research’ held during the Nature Mentor Awards 2019 on 9 December 2019 at the India International Centre, New Delhi. The panel discussion was organized by the prestigious journal in natural sciences - Springer Nature.

Prof. Rupamanjari Ghosh, was a Distinguished Panelist at the QS India Summit 2019, held in Goa on 20-22 October 2019; and spoke on the topic ‘Institutions of Eminence to World Class Universities: The Way Forward’.

Prof. Partha Chatterjee, Dean of International Partnerships; and Head of the Economics Department, was a Lead Discussant (Indian Representative) at the Roundtable Session on ‘Education: Industry-Academia Collaboration’, held during the 25th edition of Technology Summit that was jointly organized by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the Department of Science & Technology (DST), GoI, on 15-16 October 2019 in New Delhi.

Prof. Rupamanjari Ghosh, Vice Chancellor, Shiv Nadar University was a panelist at the Mail Today Education Summit, held on 10 July 2019 in New Delhi. She was a part of the panel discussion on ‘Preparing Graduates for a Disruptive World’.

A Recent Work of Dr. Parthapratim Munshi, Head of the Chemistry Department at School of Natural Sciences, appeared on the cover page of reputed journal Chemical Communications. Dr. Munshi and his research team’s work is based on all-organic molecular ferroelectric; and was published as an ‘Inside front cover’ in the Issue 65 of Chemical Communication - Royal Society of Chemistry’s most cited journal.

Dr. Gouriprasanna Roy, Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry, has been awarded the Bronze Medal of the Chemical Research Society of India (CRSI). A highly prestigious professional recognition, for his contributions to research in Chemistry, the medal for Dr. Roy was announced at the 25th CRSI National Symposium in Chemistry held at IIT-Kanpur in July 2019.

Prof. Partha Chatterjee, Dean of International Partnerships, Shiv Nadar University was a speaker at 5th edition of ‘Global Exhibition on Services’; and delivered a session on ‘Internationalization of Higher Education in India’. The event was organized by Ministry of Commerce & Industry, GoI, in association with Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Services Export Promotion Council (SEPC), on 26-28 November 2019 in Bengaluru.

Mr. Anil Nair, Director of Admissions, Shiv Nadar University, was invited to speak on ‘New-age career options on liberal arts & humanities in India’ at the Schools Leaders & Head Counsellors Workshop held in Dubai on November 14, 2019. Mr. Nair attended the workshop alongside educationists from top universities in India. The event provided attendees with the opportunity to introduce their institutions before esteemed school groups from Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi and Ajman.

Ayana Sarkar, Research Scholar at Department of Physics, received the ‘Best Oral Presentation Award’ for her talk titled ‘Generating Random Bures states via coupled kicked tops’ at the 12th Conference on Nonlinear Systems and Dynamics (CNSD 2019) held at IIT Kanpur from 12-15 December 2019.

Student-Team Moonshot from Shiv Nadar University won the Smart India Hackathon, Hardware - Complex Category. The team included - Aditya Dubey (B.Tech. in Electrical and Electronic Engineering) as a team leader, Yadlapalli Pradeep Roy, Kushagr Tyagi, V. Pratiksha Sharma (B.Tech. in Computer Science and Engineering), Agastya Seth (B.Tech. in Electrical and Communication Engineering), and Jose Dominic (B.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering). They worked on a problem statement by Tata Motors. The topic was - Intelligent Trip Management System for Electric Vehicles. The event took place at IISER, Pune. The team facilitators from Shiv Nadar University included Dr. Nishant Mishra, Dr. Rajeev Kumar Singh and team from Career Development Center. The two external mentors associated with the team Moonshot were - Mr. V.N. Rao Melam, Executive Director, JPMorgan Chase & Co., and Mr. Prashant Pansare, Founder & Managing Director, Inteliment. One of Shiv Nadar University’s alumni, Paul George, who is currently pursuing his Masters from IIT Madras, also helped the team with their project.

Deepika Kannan, doctoral student at Department of Life Sciences; and Dr. Nisha Yadav, doctoral student at the Departments of Chemistry received the prestigious BIRAC-SRISTI: GYTI 2019 (Gandhian Young Technological Innovation) Award from Shri Venkaiah Naidu, Vice President of India, on 6 July 2019 at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi, for their work on “Modernization of Traditional Anti-malarial Drug Artesunate via Nanomedicine Approach“.

Shiv Nadar University-India Team comprising Shrihari Negi, Shivsam Bady, Anindita Puri, Ranjini and Aakash Grover (B.Sc. (Research) in Biotechnology) won silver medal at the 2019 International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition held in Boston, USA. It was a tough competition where over 300 teams from different parts of the world took part. What was even more praiseworthy was the fact that Shiv Nadar University participated in the competition first time which took place between October 31 and November 4, 2019. The judges were impressed by both the poster and the presentation of the Shiv Nadar University students where several high-class scientific projects were presented. Dr. Richa Priyadarshini, Associate Professor, Department of Life Sciences, and Dr. Rohini Garg, Assistant Professor, Department of Life Sciences, mentored the students.

Rakesh Rayapureddi and Amith, B.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering, secured 2nd position at the Student Mechanism Design Contest (SMDC) held during the iNaCoMM 2019 - a biennial conference on Machines and Mechanisms, that took place at IIT Mandi on 5-7 December 2019. The winning team, who won a cash prize of ₹ 6000, has started the fabrication of the actual machine. The team’s machine design focused on resolving the issue of unwanted crop residue i.e. stubble of paddy or wheat. Every year around 35 million tonnes of stubble is burnt only in Northern states. This waste can be converted into useful products such as organic fertilizers, cattle feed, biofuel, making pellets, packaging materials, and bio coal, etc. The machine design focuses on processing the stubble.

SNU-iGEM team comprising Shrihari Negi, Shivsam Bady, Anindita Puri, Ranjini and Aakash Grover won the award for best presentation at the all India iGEM meet-up at IISER Bhopal along with IISER Kolkata. The team competed with 12 Indian teams during the event held on 20-21 July 2019.

Nishanth T.A., B.Tech. in Computer Science and Engineering, bagged a 4-month internship at QTIM lab at the Athinoula A. Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School. Nishanth will be working to develop and apply deep learning techniques to medical imaging, an area in which Harvard Medical School has conducted path-breaking research. Nishanth’s research carried out during his internship will be working towards his Bachelor’s thesis.

Rohan Gorantla, B.Tech. in Computer Science and Engineering, bagged an internship opportunity at the Living Analytics Research Centre (LARC) lab of Singapore Management University (SMU). Rohan will be spending his next semester as Research Assistant at the SMU lab in Singapore. The lab is a joint collaboration between SMU and Carnegie Mellon University, USA.

Siddharth Dixit, B.Sc. (Research) in Mathematics was invited among 50 worldwide researchers to participate in the Data Study Group organized by the Alan Turing Institute, the UK’s national institute for Artificial Intelligence. The week-long event was hosted by the Jean Golding Institute at the University of Bristol with an aim of bringing together some of the country’s top talent from data science, artificial intelligence, and wider fields, to analyze real-world data science challenges. Siddharth was selected based on his proposal on solving Air Pollution in Bristol City Center using Machine Learning and the work he had done in his previous research projects collaborating with the University of Luxembourg.

Mehaq Mehta, B.A. (Research) in Sociology, presented her paper ‘Habitus of Loss: Psychic and Social’ at the Fortis Third Annual Psychology Conference on 15 September 2019. The theme of the conference was ‘Exploring the Psychosocial Realm in Psychology: A Multi-faceted Approach’.

Biswajit Sahariah, a doctoral students at the Department of Chemistry, was awarded the travel grant by the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), Department of Science and Technology (DST), GoI, to deliver an oral presentation at the 1st International Conference on Noncovalent Interactions (ICNI), held in Lisbon, Portugal from 2-6 September 2019.

Deepika Kannan, a Ph.D. scholar at the Department of Life Sciences, received the Best Poster award at the Global Bio-India 2019. The event was held from 21-23 November 2019; and was an international congregation of biotechnology stakeholders, including international bodies, regulatory bodies, central and state ministries, SMEs, large industries, bioclusters, research institutes, investors, and the startup ecosystem.

Sanjana Maheshwari, B.Sc. (Research) in Chemistry, was selected for the national level undergraduate camp organized by National Initiative on Undergraduate Science (NIUS) by Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai. The camp will provide an opportunity to explore frontier research areas in chemistry and core concepts and enable students to comprehend scientific papers. Through laboratory activities, students will learn planning, decision-making and problem-solving.

K. Sanjana, B.Sc. (Research) in Chemistry, won the Best Oral Presentation award at the Green and Sustainable Chemistry Conference held at Manav Rachna University. She presented her research paper titled ‘Waste utilization to design S/Se encapsulated rGO as cathode material for high-performance greener batteries’ at the event. The conference was held from 7-8 November 2019, organized at Manav Rachna University, Faridabad, and was sponsored by Science & Engineering Research Board (SERB), Department of Science and Technology, India.

Dr. Debdas Ray Develops Invisible Ink

RESEARCH @ SNUDr. Richa Priyadarshini Discovers Plastic Eating Bacteria

Dr. Richa Priyadarshini, Department of Life Sciences, School of Natural Sciences, and her team at Shiv Nadar University may have just found the solution to one of the most persistent problems: how to manage plastic waste. Dr. Priyadarshini has discovered two strains of bacteria that have the potential to decompose polystyrene, a key component of single-use plastic items. The bacterial species Exiguobacterium sibiricum strain DR11 and Exiguobacterium undae strain DR14 were isolated from wetlands adjoining the University. The research team, found that the bacteria use plastic as a carbon source and create biofilms. This initiates a process of degradation as hydrolyzing enzymes are released to break the polymer chains. The discovery assumes significance given the recent announcement by the Prime Minister of India to eliminate single-use plastic by 2022. The research has received widespread media coverage.

Dr. Debdas Ray, Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry; and doctoral student Harsh Bhatia have developed a low-cost invisible security ink that may help in data storage and protection. The new ink, as described in the peer-reviewed Journal of Physical Chemistry C, offers improved security features compared to existing inks that are multi-component and, therefore, more expensive. These materials can be used in applications, such as security signs, emergency route signs, traffic signage, in addition to medical diagnosis, and background-independent bio emitting probes. According to Dr. Ray, the white security ink is made from cheaper, organic compounds that can be used in daylight as they show white emission with afterglow feature covering visible range of the spectrum (400-700 nanometres) under UV light exposure. These single component security inks give better stability, colour reproducibility and simple device fabrication over the multi-component security inks that are costly, toxic and work under different background, according to the article published by PTI.

Dr. Harpreet Singh Grewal develops anti-corrosive coating using rice huskDr. Harpreet Singh Grewal, Department of Mechanical Engineering, and his research team at Shiv Nadar University has developed a new anti-corrosive coating using rice husk. The unique super-hydrophobic (water repelling) coating eliminates discoloration of the surface, physical damage or corrosion on a long-term basis. Developed by extracting the nano-silica particles of rice husk (an agriculture waste product), it also has the potential to offer an alternative to crop residue burning by farmers, a major cause for air pollution in the northern part of the country. The self-cleaning coating is a cost-effective and eco-friendly substitute for the existing toxic paints and coatings available in the market. The research has been sponsored by the Government of India’s Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR), and has been tested under extreme weather conditions including rain and storms.

Prof. Jyoti Sharma is Preserving Over 300 Folk SongsProf. Jyoti Sharma, Center for Environmental Sciences and Engineering, and his research team at Shiv Nadar University are preserving over 300 Folk Songs from a village in Uttar Pradesh. The team is now in the process of documenting and preserving the songs in an “audio-visual format” as well as in the form of a book. Songs that have been documented, through audio-visual recordings, including the genres of Kissa, Ragni, bhajan and aarti, and a whole category of geet, which are specific to women.

Inauguration of DST FIST - Confocal Raman SpectrometerProf. Rupamanjari Ghosh inaugurated the DST FIST - Confocal Raman Spectrometer on 2 September 2019. It is a newly developed research facility added to the A Block in Physics department of Shiv Nadar University.

Raman spectroscopy is a simple, fast, and non-destructive technique, which is extensively used in Physics, Chemistry, Material and Biological science to identify and/or quantify elements, atoms, molecules, matter, and molecular structure. In Raman spectroscopy, a sample is illuminated by monochromatic light (typically a laser beam) and a spectrometer is used to analyze the scattered light (approximately 1 out of 107 photons). Raman scattering occurs when the system exchanges energy with the incoming photon and the system decays to vibrational energy levels above (anti-Stokes) or below (stokes) that of the initial state. The frequency shift corresponding to the energy difference between the incident and scattered photon is referred as Raman shift. Normally, Stokes lines are more intense than the anti-stokes lines and hence a Raman spectrometer detects only stokes lines. This event takes place in less than 10-14 seconds and a typical Raman spectrum is obtained by plotting the number of detected scattered photons as a function of Raman shift.

The OUR program aims to give undergraduates a hands-on experience in conducting research and doing independent work under faculty supervision. OUR lets students learn by discovery, encourages greater student-faculty interaction, and helps identify candidates for graduate programs. In 2019, 86 projects were showcased by students during the 5th Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Conference.

The 5th OUR Conference saw some excellent projects and presentations, which made it very difficult to rank just three projects. As part of the Uttar Pradesh Government’s massive tree plantation drive ‘Vriksharopan Mahakumbh’ on August Kranti Diwas, students and faculty at Shiv Nadar University came together to plant more than 60 saplings of Neem, Amaltas, and Gulmohar varieties. The plantation drive was organized by the Office of Dean of Students Affairs.

‘Vriksharopan Mahakumbh’ is a result of the state Cabinet’s decision to plant and geotag a record 22 crore saplings in the state on August Kranti Diwas. The geotagging will allow the Government to monitor the plants’ growth.

Soccer is arguably one of the most aggressive sports played in the world. Department of Physical Education wanted to remove the seriousness of the game and bring something that is a lot less aggressive and a lot more fun. Bubble Soccer, was organized on 15th September 2019 at Central hall, Indoor Sports Complex. Bubble soccer is the recreational sport in which players were half-encased inside an inflated bubble which covers the player’s upper body and head. There were several teams who pitted against each other. Before competing, players of the sport were strapped into a balloon-like bubble and, much like regular soccer, tried to score on their opponents. Giggling and bumping into each other’s bubbles, The players thoroughly enjoyed the game.

More than a hundred school students and school delegates (each school sent a student from each stream and a delegate) from different parts of the country came together at the Shiv Nadar University during the ‘Experience SNU’ event which gave them a first-hand experience of life on campus. The two-day event was organized by the Admissions Department. The students came to the campus on October 2 and went back on October 4. Their visit was full of learning and experiences, as they interacted with the Shiv Nadar University students and faculty members; enjoyed sports at the Indoor Sports Complex, and took a guided tour of the campus.

Shiv Nadar University’s Adventure Club organized a thrilling Hampta Pass Trek, which has a maximum altitude of 14,100 feet. The Trek offered the students a glorious view of green pastures, scenic landscapes, and the dramatic Spiti and Lahaul valleys. With nearly a week to explore this Himachal Pradesh gem, the trek is a must-take for every adventurer.

Shiv Nadar University’s Mathematics Society organized the first edition of the SNU Autumn Open 2019, a thrilling one-day speed-cubing competition. The day saw best cubers from across the country showing off their prowess in a bid to set – and break – national records. The event is recognized by World Cube Association, with participants fighting it out under six categories including 3x3x3 Cube, Clock, Megaminx, Square-one, Skewb and 3x3x3 Feet. To make the day even more interesting, the event’s cube store partner, Cubelelo, had cubes and puzzles for sale.

The Shiv Nadar University was honoured to host Padma Shri awardee Shovana Narayan as the legendary Indian kathak dancer performed at the university campus on November 7. The grand evening was organized by Spic Macay SNU Chapter on behalf of the Shiv Nadar University. Dr. Shovana of course needs little introduction. The Padma Shri in 1992 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1999–2000 are among the many awards and accolades that she has received in a glorious life and career.

The Consortium of Archaeology, Museums and Heritage under the aegis of Shiv Nadar University’s School of Humanities & Social Sciences organized a ‘Workshop on Archaeological Mapping’ that gave the students across Delhi and NCR an opportunity to get up close with the basics of mapping. The Workshop aimed to train students in making maps of archaeological sites such as ruined buildings, and architectural remains that are of potential archaeological interest, which can then be analyzed and interpreted for an understanding of the past. Swarup) completed his term as President, Shiv Nadar University on 30 September 2019. The Farewell was thrown by all the staff members

of the University, who operate under the Presidents’ office, as they (staff members) poured their experiences and feelings while reminiscing the

long tenure spent with Mr. Swarup. The previous President, in an address, shared his memories and remembered his tenure at the campus, as

he had been living in the University campus since the institution’s early days. It was an emotional moment, as all the staff members bid adieu

to Mr. Swarup in their own different ways.

Mr. Swarup as President headed all non-academic functions at Shiv Nadar University including Admissions, Finance, HR, IT, Marketing and

Campus Infrastructure. With nearly four decades of corporate experience in incubating, managing and developing both the strategic &

operational aspects of large businesses, Mr. Swarup superannuated from HCL America as Senior Corporate Vice President and Chief Customer

The program was meant to acquaint the new students with life at Shiv Nadar University; and initiate them to the academic path ahead. “Fit India Movement” is a nation-wide campaign that aims to encourage people to include physical activity and sports in their everyday lives. Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched

the nation-wide “Fit India Movement” on the occasion of National Sports Day, August 29 and appealed to every citizen to remain healthy and fit. He also emphasized on the importance of fitness, especially in the times we are living in. As per the instructions of UGC, the Physical Education Department of Shiv Nadar University organized a live screening of the event held in New Delhi. The Department of Physical Education aims to further encourage the Shiv Nadar University community to make sports & fitness an integral part of active and growing sports culture at the University.

Shiv Nadar University hosted the Dean’s List felicitation ceremony to recognize

the outstanding academic performance of our students in the Spring 2019 semester. The University has instituted two kinds of academic awards for its undergraduate students. The Dean’s List rewards academic excellence in a particular semester, while the Graduation Awards reward sustained excellence over the entire course of study. Special prizes are given to students who qualify for the Dean’s List and have a perfect SGPA of 10. The Opportunities for Undergraduate Research 2018-2019 edition’s certificates and cash prize were also distributed during the felicitation ceremony.

Colloquium organized by SME Research Colloquium Committee at Shiv Nadar University. Speaking on ‘Leveraging Smart Supply Chain and Information System Agility for Supply Chain Flexibility’, Prof. Gupta delved into how organization information processing theory could explain the strong relationship between smart supply chain and the information system flexibility of organizations. Through empirical findings, he argued that appropriate deployment of information processing would lead to better diffusion of information throughout the system.

Life Beyond Sociology: Panel DiscussionTotem Pole - the Sociology Club of Shiv Nadar University organized a half-a-day long panel discussion - ‘Life beyond Sociology’. Eight panelists were selected who have completed either

their Undergraduate or PostGraduate studies in Sociology and are now pursuing their careers in fields beyond Academia. The purpose of this event was primarily to expose students, who are currently pursuing majors and minors in Sociology, to career possibilities after graduation. The event also aimed to demonstrate how one can apply the concepts learnt in classrooms to spaces outside.

The first panel session had Prerna Bountra (International Relations Program Officer at Ananta Centre); Rajashree Chowdhury (Independent Researcher and Blogger as well as Executive at Sshristi India Trust); Akash Joshi (Senior Assistant Editor with The Indian Express); and Neeraj Shetye (Shiv Nadar University alumnus and campaign manager in the recently held Maharashtra elections). For the second panel session, the speakers were Inika Hazarika (Shiv Nadar University alumna and Intern at Observer Research Foundation, Delhi); Pallavi Rebbapragada (Journalist and Policy Advisor to the Delhi government); Priyanuj Choudhary (Former Teach For India Fellow and currently working at Language and Learning Foundation); and Aali Sinha (Development Research and Consulting Professional). Each speaker brought their experiences and stories to the table to enlighten Sociology students about the convergence of academic Sociology and real life.

But, you can’t.

You sit there, on your bed,

hiding from your own existence,

wondering if it was time to give up.

But, there is still a part of you,

that has a very soft voice now,

telling you to push yourself, because you can.

Telling you that you just need to be a little more patient with

life.

But,

you’re trying to suppress that part, aren’t you?

Don’t.

Sometimes,

if you let out one cry for help,

everyone will be there for you.

By staying alive,

you can let people love you and support you.

By asking for help,

you’re saving yourself,

and everyone else too.

Never forget,

that you’re a star, in this world which seems to be consuming

1st Inter Hostel Kabaddi Tournament 2019

The 1st Inter Hostel Kabbadi Tournament 2019 organized by the Department of Physical Education and Sports Committee at the Shiv Nadar University campus. The tournament was a huge success and has set a benchmark for future tournaments to follow. The matches were filled with excitement, and hunger for victory. It was heartening to see people come out in large numbers to support their friends..

Badminton SNUSL (Boys/Girls) 2019-20, was organized at the Badminton Hall by Department of Physical Education along with Sports Committee. All four clubs Bulls, Pheonix, Panthers, and Falcons participated in the league. The Boys final match was played between Bulls and Panthers with Bulls defeating Panther by 3-0. In Girls final match Phoenix defeated Falcons by 2-1. The league offered a fun and friendly sporting environment, in which some competitors were competing in badminton for the first time in such a competitive league. The league witnessed a great amount of the supportive crowd came out to cheer their favourite players throughout the league.

The stage was set for the final match to compete in Volleyball SNUSL on September 2019. The tournament, simply put, was a brilliant one, with each team seeming to bring forth something entirely different this season. The scale of emotional input in the players of the tournament truly memorable and outstanding one. Bulls and Phoenix team dominated the league, winning all of their matches against other clubs. The clubs showed immense sportsmanship and love for the game - despite losing their matches.

The final showdown was between Bulls and Phoenix. The level of play, displayed equally by both teams, was and the crowd could visually see the amount of emotional and physical input the players ejected into the game. The match was won by Phoenix 25-22, 25-19, 25-16.

Department of Physical Education conducted the 2nd Inter-departmental Football Tournament for both Men & Women. A total of 10 teams representing various departments participated in the tournament in the men’s and two in the women’s category. Students turned out in great numbers to support and cheer their respective departmental teams. Teams from the Department of CSE, ME, ECE, EEE, Civil and Chemical, SoNS & SoHSS, BMS, TSS, and Ph.D. participated in the tournament. After the tough preliminary rounds departments of SoHSS and EEE managed to reach the finals of the tournament. The final was a thrilling one in which SoHSS won the match. In women, Team B defeated Team by 6-0. Maj.Gen. G Jaishanker, Dean of Students’ Affairs, along with Dr. Amrish Tony, Deputy Director – Sports, felicitated the winners with an elegant trophy and congratulated all the teams for their wonderful performances in the tournament.
