BEHIND THE GAVEL

PAGE 2

Fellow Rotarian,

I welcome you to the month of September designated as Basic Education and Literacy month. The Rotary

Foundation enables Rotarians to ensure that all people have sustainable access to basic education and litera-

cy. The Basic Education and Literacy committee at club and district level has lined several activities to mark

the month and I want to encourage us all to key into all these activities.

Fellow Rotarians this is to inform all members that still have outstanding 2014-15 dues and levies that they

will be recommended to the Board of Director for sanction if they did not regularize their financial status

with the club before September Board of Director meeting. They are therefore advised to make appropriate

plans and actions to settle their 2014 – 2015 debts on or before the said date.

Thank you as we continue to BE A GIFT TO THE WORLD.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE THROUGH ROTARY YOUTH EXCHANGE.

When Gabriela Vessani was 12 years old, her mother took her to stay with friends in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA, for the summer. “I loved it, so when I heard about Rotary Youth Exchange, I knew that was something I wanted to do,” says Vessani, who is an Interactor from São Paulo. This year, Vessani participated in the program. Hosted by the Rotary Club of Waterdown, Ontario, Canada, she stayed with four families, one of which included adopted children from different parts of the world. “They had seven children, and it was crazy for me. But I loved it,” she says. “It was such a unique experience getting to know all of my host brothers and sisters, and learning about so many cultures.”

Changing lives Vessani and 104 other Rotary Youth Exchange students visited Rotary World Headquarters in Evanston, Illinois, in July as part of a 31-day Discover America cross-country bus trip that was a finale to the exchange experience. “This is the best program Rotary can be involved with, because Rotary is all about changing lives,” says Vessani. Rotary Youth Exchange has been providing intercultural ex-change opportunities for secondary school students ages 15-19 since the 1920s. Students become cultural ambassadors for up to a full academic year, and the host families can help build peace and international understanding, serving one of Rotary’s six areas of focus.

Club benefits Mike Lubelfeld, an elementary school superintendent and member of the Rotary Club of Deerfield, Illinois, spent weeks making arrangements for his club to host its first exchange student in more than two decades. In August, Leo, a 17-year-old from Indonesia, was greeted at the airport by an enthusias-tic welcome committee from the club. “We have just started the process and, already, there is so much excitement,” says Lubelfeld. “Working with youth of the world is one of the best ways to ensure a better future. And for our club to be able to take part in this cultural exchange is a huge opportunity that will not only benefit Leo but our mem-bers as well.” TO BE CONTINEU…...

WHAT IS THE SECRET TO A HAPPY LIFE?

While we definitely use our mind each and every day, very few of us have taken time to cultivate a deep understanding of its nature and function. Chances are, unless we have stud-ied and trained in Buddha’s teachings, we probably know very little about the different types of mind, how they are gen-erated and what impact they have on our lives. It is quite diffi-cult for most people to recognize states of mind as they arise, and especially to distinguish between those that are virtuous and those that are non-virtuous. Moreover, we are often at a complete loss as to how we might cultivate the former and abandon the latter. What does understanding the mind have to do with creating a happy life? Happiness and suffering are both merely states of mind. Therefore to truly be free from suffering and enjoy happiness in every moment, it is impera-tive that we possess a thorough and profound understanding of the mind and how to maintain control over it. This is the best, most reliable way by which we can greatly improve our quality of life both now and in the future.

Happiness and suffering only exist within the mind.

In reality, however, all of our problems arise from our own mind. To those unfamiliar with their mind, this sounds counter-intuitive or completely false, but if we take the time to investi-gate deeply we will discover this truth for ourselves. When we can respond to life’s difficulties with a positive and peaceful mind, they suddenly seem to melt away into nothing right be-fore our eyes. Indeed, we may even come to view them as exciting challenges for personal and spiritual growth. Prob-lems only really arise when we adopt a negative state of mind in response to a difficult or unexpected situation. Because of this, if we want to free ourselves from all our problems, we must gain control of our mind.

It is true that this modern world continues to discover new knowledge and develop new ways to influence our surround-ings. Recent years have especially born fruit to extraordinary developments. Progress marches on! But if we look carefully, we will find that suffering around the world has not de-creased, and there are no fewer problems to be found. One could say, in fact, that even greater and more varied prob-lems exist today than ever before. Clearly, true happiness cannot be attained by ever increasing control over our exter-nal world. Happiness and suffering only exist within the mind, and so their origins cannot to be found outside the mind. In order to really achieve permanent happiness and freedom from all suffering, we must first achieve a thorough under-standing of the mind. TO BE CONTINUE NEXT WEEK.
