    EDITOR'SINTRO

    Dear Students and Parents,

I hope this edition of Crestmag finds you well. It has been another magnificent term here at Crestwood School and the contents of this termly magazine demonstrate that.

Our new year 7 students have settled in very well and we look forward to them making their mark on the school in the future months and years. The progress of our students across all year groups is exceptional and all students should be very proud of what they are achieving.

You may have noticed the building contractors on site over the summer holidays and this term, this is largely due to us securing government bids to help further improve our facilities for the benefit of our students and the local community who use our facilities for a multitude of things.

Crestwood is more popular than ever! Each year more and more students are choosing us as first choice and 2017 looks like we will again have exceeded our numbers from the previous year. I have heard so many wonderful comments from parents of prospective Year Six pupils at our open evening and open day events. The team of staff here are the best I have ever worked with and these comments and results show how valuable their hard work is.

The increase in students and our desire to offer them the opportunity to make outstanding progress has meant we have made some exciting changes to our Senior Leadership Team; which includes growing the size of team. The purpose of the Senior Leadership Team is to support our team of staff. Each year we evaluate the school performance and use this to produce a School Improvement Plan. This shows what a strong team we have.

Ok, go easy on me everyone, this my first attempt at being editor of our wonderful termly magazine, Crestmag. The purpose of Crestmag is to show our community all of the fantastic things we get up to each term.

If there is ANYTHING you think we have missed or you would like to see in the next edition, please do not hesitate to let us know. For regular updates you can follow us on social media, we have an official Twitter account and a heavily moderated school Facebook group, we post updates on these accounts almost daily.

In this action packed issue, we have so much to share! We have had school trips to Cologne, USA and the WW1 battlefields. Lots of incredible achievements from our wonderful students, an update from the ever productive Hub, so many superb sporting performances by our students. We also have a report on our heart-warming tributes for the Poppy Appeal plus numerous other charity events that our students and staff have organised.

I will be treating each edition of Crestmag to BRAG BRAG BRAG like crazy about our students and staff (for which I make no apologies!) they are fantastic group of people and a pleasure to be around!

Enjoy, and of course, MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Here is an overview of the team and the main responsibilities:

The Music Department have been rehearsing very hard this half term. The new Crestwood School Choir is now up to a staggering 67 students and managed a wonderful debut performance at Crestwood School’s Sixth Form Opening Evening. The Choir performed Adele’s ‘Someone Like You’ and a lively version of ‘Valerie’ by Mark Ronson. The Choir are now working on performances for the local Primary Schools and the wider community. Rehearsals take place every Tuesday morning, 8.30-9.10 a.m. In the Music department.

CFest rehearsals are well underway and our various Rock and Pop bands have been heard in many a lunchtime and break time, entertaining both pupils and staff. Our new Brass quintet have also been rehearsing every Thursday and have successfully

    performed various Christmas Carols.

Our singers have been working their vocal chords for ‘Little Shop of Horrors’. Shauna Hayes, Milas Tatli, Hannah Moore, Paige Edwards and Paige Franks have been tremendous in their efforts in learning some complex harmony as part of the ‘Ronettes’.

We have seen a large uptake in instrumental lessons this term which is fantastic. Learning a musical instrument is an opportunity not to be missed! If you are interested in learning an instrument, please speak to Mr Sweeney in the Music department.

This term has seen the launch of the brand new Student Leadership Pathway. The pathway has been created so that

our students can plot their way through school gaining leadership experience that will be valuable and vital to them

    in their life after school.

The pathway has seen some new exciting posts created, all posts now feature as part of a hierarchy, allowing progression opportunities for each student and some posts have been rejigged

or rebranded. Two of the roles that we have changed slightly are the Form Ambassador and Form Captain and we are proud to announce

that the election process has now been completed and all Form Ambassadors and Form Captains have been appointed!

    Form Ambassadors

The role of the ambassador is to support their form tutor and fellow tutees with administration based tasks such as assistance with registers, handing out school letters, delivering messages, issuing and recording equipment loans and other crucial tasks. This will allow tutors to concentrate on their whole form during registration periods

    Form Captains

An exciting new role that will help us build the profile of our house system. The Form Captain will assist their forms with all reward, recognition and House related tasks such as collating House Points and organising teams for House events. They will report to the House Captain who will be a year 10/11 student that is effectively head of their appointed House. The House Captains will meet regularly with their Form Captains to decide on which House activities they will help organise and participate in, such as charity events and inter House competitions.

We had a wunderbar week. In scorching hot temperatures we explored the city, we visited the zoo, rode on the cable cars, walked through the Rheinpark along the famous river and viewed the city from a lofty viewing platform. All before doing a spot of all important shopping then filling up on a tremendous Chinese banquet - lecker! We also toured the Bayerleverkusen football stadium and cooled off in the awesome Aqualand Schwimmbad - fantastisch! We survived the steepest log flume ride at Phantasialand theme park, and the rickety wooden roller coaster at Movie World - meine Güte! Most of us had never been to Germany before, and we were amazed at how beautiful it was, and how interessant it truly is! Danke to all of our parents for allowing us to go on this super trip! Wir lieben dich Deutschland.

    CologneTRIP Takeme ToCHURCH

In July a group of lucky year 7 and 8 students set off for a week in Köln in Deutschland.

Miss Read recently organised for our year 8 students to visit Holy Trinity Church in Wordsley, as part of our churches topic in R.E. Students have been learning about the outside and inside features of a church, purposes of stained glass windows and whether they think certain features are useful or beautiful. Students have had some wonderful experiences on this trip and thoroughly enjoyed having the opportunity to explore one of their local churches.

“When I woke up on the morning of our trip, I thought it was going to be really boring but how wrong was I! As soon we got to the church, I thought “wow” – the size of the church was really impressive. Outside I saw some gargoyles. As we entered the church, I could already see lots of details of the inside features that we have been learning about in class such as the stained glass windows. The vicar gave us a brief history of the church. We then had some time to have a tour around the church. She explained to us the different features. One of my favourites was the organ. It was really big and the gold colour of it was amazing. The vicar explained that in the past when lots of people attended church on a Sunday, the children would be sent to sit on the balconies because there wasn’t enough room for them to sit with the adults, downstairs. I thought this was really interesting. I would like to go for more of an explore of the outside of the church such as looking at the gravestones. I would also love to see where the people go to pull the ropes on the bells of the bell tower.”

Written by Morgan Booth 8DI “We visited Holy Trinity Church in Wordsley as part of our year 8 topic on churches. I loved my trip to the church. The vicar told us about the background of the church and we had the opportunity to ask her questions. I asked her how long the church had been built for and we discussed how the original building had been there since 1831. I was surprised at how old the church was! We had the chance to go around the church and stand on the balcony. We had activities to complete on our way round of all the inside and outside features that we saw. I really enjoyed my trip to the church as it was really interesting to see something that I might not normally go and see. Also, to see the differences in churches we have been looking at in both our churches topic in R.E. and differences between Protestant and Catholic churches in our Tudor topic in History.”

During half term 24 lucky pupils and 3 even luckier staff members travelled to the west coast of America in what proved to be the trip of a lifetime. The adventures started at 7am on a rainy Saturday morning when 27 intrepid explorers left school heading for Heathrow, 26 hours later we landed in San Francisco.

San Fran, as we came to call it, was truly amazing. The first day was spent touring Alcatraz, the city and Sausalito. Alcatraz was starkly beautiful and captivating. Pupils experienced a powerful audio tour in which they heard the real voices, thoughts and emotions of actual inmates and guards who had ‘done time’ on the island whilst visiting different areas of the jail. The tour ended in the gift shop and our

some of our students thought was a huge stationary outlet and not the home of the world famous LA Lakers!! It had been a long day.

Wednesday was another early one. We first visited the California Science Centre home of the retired Space Shuttle Endeavour. Pupils were able to touch parts of the shuttle, get up close with interactive exhibits and see the shuttle itself. The shuttle has transported countless astronauts on numerous missions over the past 30 years and was suspended above our heads. Breath taking to see. We then started our drive to Laughlin, Nevada. On the way we stopped at an outlet mall where more gifts were brought and bargains sort. Our main stop of the day was at Calico Ghost town, an old abandoned gold mining town from the height of the gold rush. Pupils explored the town exploring old wooden buildings and mining machinery. We arrived at Laughlin late in the day where we were treated to a huge buffet before some free time and jumping into bed to dream of the Grand Canyon.

Thursday started with a buffet breakfast then we were back on the road, four hours later (a short trip for us now) we arrived at the Grand Canyon. Words cannot describe the canyon; it is truly impressive and hard to comprehend the size even when you are there. The canyon is a mile deep and up to 18 miles wide and is truly a wonder of the world. The huge Colorado river looks like a trickle from the top. Pupils were given a talk on geological history of the canyon and the secrets it holds. We spent 3 hours exploring the canyon by coach and foot, saw the canyon from several sites and found other points of interest. After more gifts and fridge magnets were brought we got back on the road and headed for Vegas. Driving into Vegas at night is a must. The city starts as glow in the distance, appears suddenly as you crest a hill and seems to go on forever. Dinner was pizza at the hotel before some free time and our final night of the visit.

After checking out on Friday morning we boarded the coach for our last site seeing excursion, the Hoover Dam. Completed in 1963 the dam is an impressive structure at 221 meters high and 379 meters wide. The pupils took a tour down into the belly of the dam to see the huge network of pipes and the hydroelectric power plant. Time was spent on the dam itself were numerous more selfies were taken. After some free time back at the Vegas hotel the very exhausted group of travelers headed to the airport and home. 26 hours later we were back at school and greeted by friends and family. There was a buzz in the air as we reunited with loved ones before excitedly recalling our stories of adventure which we will all continue to share for years to come.

first round of gift buying commenced. Back on the mainland we enjoyed a guided tour of the city and the famous Golden Gate Bridge, a great place for a selfie according to the students. The evening was spent with some free time around Pier 39 and visiting the famous sea lions. Dinner was at the very nice Swiss Louis.

Monday morning was an early start for a quick trip to the famous Lombard Street and a mammoth coach journey to LA. Helped along by Mr Jordan’s impromptu 7-hour DJ and comedy set the students were amazing on what was surely the longest coach journey of their lives. We arrived in LA early evening after a few sightseeing stops along the way each providing more opportunities for selfies and present buying. Our 5-star hotel was a welcome relief from the hours on the coach.

Tuesday was a highlight for many of the pupils with a trip to the virtually empty Universal Studios. The pupils went on lots of themed rides and attractions including Harry Potter, Simpsons, Jurassic Park, The Mummy, Transformers and many more all of which had little or no queue. Dinner was at Bubba Gump’s restaurant (from the film Forrest Gump), the food was great and the restaurant staff were amazing, going the extra mile to entertain the pupils. On the way back to the hotel we had a tour of Hollywood, saw the walk of fame, Dodger Stadium and the Staples Centre, which

In July, an opportunity was created by Miss Read and Miss Lowe to take 5 dedicated and enthusiastic young historians from Crestwood to visit the WW1 battlefields in Northern France and Belgium.

Miss Read accompanied the students - Samra Kauser, Sam Mullett, Kelsey Parkes, Christina Gordon and Darcey Noble Smith. The trip was led by Ounsdale High School, also part of the Invictus Multi Academy Trust. It was a worthwhile experience for all - 2016 marked the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme and visiting Thiepval, the British memorial of the missing soldiers of the Somme was a really special highlight. A fantastic experience was seeing Lochnager Crater - a crater that was left after a bomb was set off by the British during WW1 - debris from the explosion rose 4000ft into the air! Tynecot, the largest Commonwealth world cemetery of any war, was a particularly thought provoking experience. The uniform white headstones were a beautiful tribute to the fallen soldiers. We also visited Hill 62 in Belgium - a preserved WW1 trench where students experienced walking through a trench and seeing battlefield artefacts which had been uncovered from the ruins of battle. We visited Ypres in Belgium, the scene of much fighting during WW1. We saw the Menin Gate - a memorial to the missing soldiers and the Last Post Ceremony - moving tribute to the courage and self-sacrifice of those who fell in defence of their town. The students conduct and participation was exceptional, they were always polite, well mannered and inquisitive. We are teaming up with Ounsdale again this year and look forward to another special and thought provoking trip.

hub NEW LOOKWe had some changes over the summer holidays and the

Hub team have worked extremely hard to get things up and running again. The bottom part of the Hub has been separated by a wall and double doors to make a superb Sixth form quiet area, with computers, work

tables and comfy chairs. It certainly has

the wow factor and is ideal for quiet study.

HUB UPDATEBack in the Hub we now have the Accelerated Reader programme and a special ‘thank you’ to everyone who helped ‘level’ the books before the summer holidays.

Massive thanks to Hub Team members Amy Jones, Kayleigh Brookes and Connor Wilson. They have worked tirelessly organising books, labelling and updating records. Amy has also designed some fantastic displays, including Hub highlights and author information. Ben Pearson has created a display which includes local events, Hub and school news, whilst Connor Wilson’s display includes pictures of our students receiving books from the Books4Home project and some wonderful new front cover designs for favourite books, completed by year 7 students.

Our Year 7 students have all been inducted into the Hub and know what is available for them, including books to borrow, our opening times and the facilities for the completion of homework. Just as a reminder, we are open every day, before school, during break and at lunchtimes. Here’s what some of our new year 7 students say about the Hub:

I love how the Hub lets you access laptops and computers to do extra work and homework during the morning, break and lunch! I like the way you can go in and read and borrow books to read and research at home, encouraging students like myself to progressively learn more.

    - Megan Jones 7D.

“The Hub is an amazing place for doing homework.” - Faith Dimmock 7D.

“The Hub is a quiet and calm place to go to do homework or read.” - Sophia Pritchard 7E.

Boys footballA busy first half of the autumn term saw all 5 boys football teams competing in both league and cup fixtures. Our season was delayed by a week as staff illness at Castle meant a postponement of fixtures against them.

Year 7, kindly managed by Mr Patel and Mr Grossett, began with a 2-2 league draw against Wordsley. They then beat the same opposition 6-3 in the cup.

Year 7 also competed in the Dudley 5-a-side football competition. You can read all about it on the next page.

Year 8 lost their opening league fixture 1-2 against Holly Hall. Their cup game has had to be kept back until February.

Year 9 have begun their league fixtures with a 3-0 win over Holly Hall. They also played a superb cup game at Ellowes Hall. With the score at 2-2 after full time, fitness got the better of us during extra time and we unfortunately ran out 2-4 losers.

Year 10 have started the year in superb style. A 10 (Yes, Ten!) – 0 league win against Holly Hall was followed by a 6-1 cup win against Kingswinford. This was a great result as the same opposition beat us last year.

Year 11 unfortunately let a 3-1 lead slip in a cup and league double header against Coseley. They eventually ran out on the wrong side of a 3-6 defeat.

Good luck to all teams in league and cup action when the season restarts after the February Half Term break.

Recently we took 3 students to Twickenham to take part in a special event at the home of English Rugby. Callum Phipps, Jordan Stewart and Luke Sidaway from year 10 accompanied by Mr Evans, travelled to London for the launch of the ‘All Schools’ rugby program. As part of this day the maker of the England rugby kit, Canterbury, allowed our students to design a bespoke rugby kit for our school. Above is the finished article, with a modern design that will hopefully stand the test of time! The students were exemplary in their approach to the day and as you can see have designed a shirt that will represent Crestwood for many years to come.

This ‘All Schools’ program will see lots of England Rugby coaches coming into school to help PE staff deliver rugby lessons and after school sessions. In addition to this Crestwood will be attending lots of rugby events and tournaments in the coming season and will have fresh links with the rugby clubs in our community. So keep an eye out for the sessions that students can attend and get involved!

Year 7 Football Dudley School’s Runners up!The Year 7 football team:

Buckland Beresford, Tom Moore, Jake Burden, Harrison Toy, Lewis Hickey (GK), Charlie Rankovic (C), Brandon Lamb and Isaac Walton represented Crestwood in the Dudley School’s five a side tournament hosted by Dormston School.

    Wednesday 16 November:

In our first game of the tournament we played Dormston and lost 1-0, we lost some confidence but knew it would take a lot for us to get to the next stages on Thursday. We then went into our next game against Holly Hall and went 1-0 down quite early then after a few substitutions in the 2nd half, we were able to equalise. Then after a nice through ball by Tom, Buck had an easy tap in to make it 2-1 to Crestwood. After that win we gained our confidence back which definitely helped as we then went up against Wordsley, who we had beaten in the cup and drew to in league. We went out there with a good team and beat them 3-0, thanks to a hat trick from Buck! That then got us through into the next round on the following day.

We then went to the final on the 17 November, we all wanted to win and believed that this was possible. So we arrived at Dormston again, we had our first game against Dormston (A), they had two teams, we started the game strongly and went 1-0 up, we got to half time winning. Then we scored 2 more at the end and won 3-0. We then went into our next game against Ellowes Hall, who had a very good team. We started well and played really well, but we conceded a goal which knocked our confidence. Then before we knew it we were three nil down and there was then no way back!

Into our last game which was against Dormston (B), we had to win! In the first half Buck ran through on goal and scored, unfortunately it was ruled offside. So we went to half time and it was 0-0, so we needed a goal. Straight away though Dormston scored we were 1 goal down. We now only had 1 and a half minutes left, Charlie then got the ball in the middle of the pitch and decided to shoot...

It went rolling into the bottom corner, it was 1-1! In the end though we couldn’t get another goal so it was 1-1. We now didn’t know if we were going to get 2nd, it was down to the scores in the other matches.

We heard that Dormston (A) had come 4th so it was between us and Dormston (B), then we were so happy to hear that Dormston had finished 3rd and we had finished 2nd!

Well done to all the team that took part and thank you to all the teachers aswell!

Year 9 CAKE SALEThis year was 9I’s second cake sale as part of Macmillan’s Big Coffee Morning. Miss Evans is incredibly proud of her form’s efforts with this Shauna Hayes has completed the write-up for this years event:

    Hello Parents and Carers,

Firstly, I would like to say what lovely children you have. Friday 30th September was 9I’s second year of running a Macmillan cake sale, and with their help (and some extra pennies from you) we managed to raise over £130 for Macmillan Cancer support.

So now onto the subject of sweet treats: thank you to all our bakers and fakers! We can’t mention everyone who donated something, so we’ll mention just a couple. Miss Hall baked an amazing green and white Macmillan double-layered cake which went down very well with the students and the ladies in the school kitchen. And, not only did Mrs Hart donate some Cherry Bakewells for us to sell, but we also caught her buying one back –that’s a double donation!

Here’s what some people thought about the sale: Hollie Lewis (9W), “I thought it was a really clever way to gain attention [for Macmillan]”; Ashely Rock (9V), “An awesome fundraiser and goes to a good cause”; Mufadzi Mutukwa (9V) “It was a good idea for a good cause and I think it went well; Hannah Moore (9W) and Emily Lathbury (9E) both agreed: “it was a really good way to raise money for the cause.”

Finally, we would like to say thank you to Mr Bowles for allowing us to run this event, and for the ladies in the kitchen - for not selling any cakes on the day, so everybody wanted ours! Also, thank you to Miss Evans for organising and running this with our form

Thank you to everyone who donated in any way.

    YEAR7 year9

Year 7 have made a fantastic start to the year, and I

have been extremely happy with how well they have

settled in and become part of the ‘school’! I have

received numerous comments about how polite the

students are; how eager they are to learn. As a Head

of Year, these are the key aspects I wish my students

to develop during their time here.

Over the last term the following students have been

selected as ‘Student of the week’. Students are selected

based on effort, attainment and current performance!

So far this year we have had 8 students of the week .

HOMEWORK On the whole, students have adapted well to the

increase in homework they receive, and need to

complete. However, there are still a few issues.

Students should be writing their homework into

their planner every time, even if the homework

    is set on SPACE.

I have also suggested to students to try and

complete homework as soon as possible after it is

set. There have been incidents where students have

been unsure of what to do, but have left no time to

go and speak to the teacher. It is the responsibility

of the student to go to their teacher, or if needs be,

    myself.

    Students of the Week

have made a fantastic start to the year!

Please try and check your son or daughter’s planner weekly as there may be messages

from teachers or their tutor. It is also a useful way to see how well they are dealing with homework by checking the recording of homework and ensuring they have met all homework deadlines.

    PLANNERS

Here at Crestwood we are proud to utilise the expertise of our students.

Ellis Walters from 9I is a Junior First Aider from St John’s Ambulance. We are grateful to Ellis for delivering basic first aid to our students during their PSHE lesson.

This is what Ellis had to say:

During the Autumn and Winter terms, I have been teaching Year 7’s and Year 8’s basic lifesaving first aid lessons in their PSHE groups. This includes: The Primary Survey (DRABC), The Recovery Position and most importantly, CPR.

You could tell that the two year groups seemed so engaged in the lesson as they all were doing what they were supposed to be doing and doing it correctly. I thank Mr Patel greatly as he has given me this opportunity to teach young students lifesaving needs.

To celebrate the 100-year anniversary of the Battle of the Somme many of our students started work on a project, that would not only transpire into a whole school appeal, but one that continues into a new school year. Our current year 8 students looked into the history of WW1 during the summer term and decided as tribute they would design and make their own felt poppies. This has in turn led to many students staying after school to design and create their own poppies not only in felt but now also acrylic.

The demand for these poppies has been so great that supplies are constantly on order! The acrylic poppies can be seen in our new installation outside the front of the school.

In conjunction with the usual Poppy Appeal, we have now raised £457.56 for the Royal British Legion

Well done to Mrs Perry and her D&T disciples

    SCHOOL

I joined the CONNECT Team in October 2015, once I joined it quickly became apparent that a lot had changed around the school! I left Crestwood in 2008 and since that time the community lettings have increased dramatically with the introduction of the CONNECT Team, and now several thousand people use the facilities on a weekly basis. I joined the CONNECT Team as emergency cover, but I am now the Team Leader and have many responsibilities around the school each evening and weekends.

    Great work Harry!

This half term Year 9 have been studying a selection of War Poetry which ties in with Armistice Day on November 11th and Remembrance Sunday. Many fantastic descriptive pieces of writing have been completed in English lessons but Harry Barnes in 9W was selected by Miss Baker, his English teacher, to receive additional Housepoints for this piece which he would like to share with all Crestmag readers.

DAY 1: This is my first time in the trench. Constant barrages of artillery and

gunfire echo through the once lovely French countryside now known as No

Man’s Land. Every day is a waiting game but today is the push. The great

push. The push that could trample the Germans’ front lines, and weaken the

enemy. Now it’s time. We are all ready. With rifles in hand, we charge as the

    silver whistle blows.

Day 2: I made the push but only by the skin of my teeth. Many great men

lost; Patrick 22, Charles 18 and James 25. All young but mighty men, lost

amongst the hundreds of thousands of perished, dead soldiers left to be

swallowed up by war, their family not knowing of their dreaded fate.

    Day 3: Those damn rats!

Day 4: Merry Christmas Ma! Hope you’re still alive and well. Don’t worry

too much; it will make you bad. My trench has been overcome by the cold

December weather. There are loads of dead rats in the snow. How is it back

home, I haven’ t had a reply in months? How’s sister? Is she ok? It feels quiet.

No sound of artillery or gunfire. Strange, very strange.

Day 8: Am starting to get homesick and depressed. Why don’t you reply?

I suffered a bad wound to the knee. I might not make it. If I die, I need to

say some things to you. I love you. I love you with all my heart and I will

die fighting for my country. But I wish I was in the cosy warmth of our

countryside cottage. With the memories of dad and his horrible meals and the

loud shouts of brother and sis. I love you and don’t you forget.

    Fredrick Bradman x..

Fredrick Bradman 1897-1915. He fought the horrors of the war and died a patriot in

Ypres in 1915. May we all remember Fredrick.

    Scott KenwrickCONNECT Team Leader

My job as team leader is to ensure the facilities are ready for community use, making sure customers are happy while they are on site using the facilities and ensuring the school is ready for school use in the morning. I also manage the CONNECT Team, lock up the school after all customers have left and I have become more involved in the financial aspect of CONNECT by producing the monthly invoices for our customers.

To ensure the facilities are ready for community use, myself and the rest of the team must ready any equipment that the customer requires, make sure the facility they will be using is clear of lost property and litter and in general make the area look its best. Once the customer has finished with the facility, we must then put any equipment used back in storage, put any lost property and litter away and make sure the area is ready for school the following morning. To help me do this, we employ a number of sixth form students who work hard to complete all of the above tasks everyday. These Team Supervisors and Team Members all started out as year 11 students helping CONNECT on a voluntary basis, and have now all proven themselves time and again to be excellent and hard-working members of the team. We also have several voluntary year 11 members of our team who give up a night of their time each week to help the team get everything done.

I can only hope that the next group of CONNECT Team Members will be as hard working as the current CONNECT Team!

    CRESTWOODART CRESTWOODART

Thanks also to Mr Johnson in the SEN team and our visiting Art teacher, Miss Hawker for their help in organising the visit. We look forward to another trip to broaden students understanding of what constitutes Art and Design in the spring term.

    Mrs Carroll-Grigg

    Savannah Smith

Savannah has excellent natural talent in Art and Design which is demonstrated in her classwork and homework. She goes above and beyond expectations by completing tasks in her own time to explore her skills further. We believe she will go from strength to strength.

    Chloe Green

Chloe is dedicated to art and design and

responds with maturity to the guidance given.

Her skills are flourishing and her motivation is truly

    acknowledged by the staff.

We commend Chloe and hope this positivity

continues to ensure she achieves her goals within

    this subject.

During the visit students’ complete worksheets which guided them around the gardens and various hot houses. The tropical house was particularly interesting and felt like a mini rain forest with a mass of dark leaves dropping down from the high ceiling. Huge vegetation and a hot, steamy environment was very different from what many students had experienced.

The aviaries hosted a number of parrots, parakeet and canaries and provided great opportunities for photographs. The family of peacocks were also impressive and very noisy!

Students were able to make drawings, take many photographs and research various aspects of the Botanical Gardens for their portfolio project. It was a great trip and students were a credit to themselves and our school.

ART&DESIGNTRIP Botanical Gardens (Birmingham)In November Year 10 artists were taken on a visit to Birmingham’s Botanical Gardens. Students were able to see at first-hand a large variety of interesting plants, birds and fish to support their ‘Natural Forms’ art project.

    Sophie Boswell

On the 1st November, our art group visited the Botanical Gardens, located near the centre of Birmingham. While we were there we were given a booklet with various tasks and were told to work our way through them. These tasks varied from answering questions about the things that we had seen, to drawing patterns of leaves, flowers etc. We also took it upon ourselves to do some drawings of the nature that we could see around us, in order to add to our work that we had done in lessons, considering our theme for this project is Natural Forms. We took many photos of the plants and flowers so we had things to work on/draw in future lessons. Overall, I think the trip was really interesting and I would love to go again!

    Christina Gordon

I think the trip to the Botanical Gardens was a very enjoyable and educational experience. I loved seeing all the different types of plants that were there and all the strange facts that came along with them. Such as the Ficus elastica which is used to make rubber for car tyres. Also it was pretty cool seeing the many sculptures and buildings they had like the Victorian house which had a range of beautiful flowers growing outside it. they were great to photograph for our Natural Forms art project. So were the rest of the plants in the gardens. Being able to actually go and collect the image ourselves for our GCSE work really helps towards our grade and gives us a great range of photos to work from. Overall it was a great trip and I wouldn’t mind going there again.

    Mollie Clarke

On Tuesday 1st November we went to the Botanical gardens for an art trip based on our theme, Natural Forms. First we looked around all the green houses at all the Mediterranean, arid and subtropical plants. Then we all went off and explored the other gardens; taking pictures of unusual flowers, leaves and all the animals and drawing sketches of the things we could use using skills we have learned in lesson. I really enjoyed the experience and I would love to do more things like this again in the near future!

    Jade Andrews

On Tuesday the 1st of November our art group went with Mrs Carroll-Grigg to the Botanical Gardens. This trip was to collect images and facts to help with our GCSE art course on natural forms. During our trip we took pictures of plants and other natural forms, we also completed a booklet with facts, drawings and other information to help with our natural form course work.

celebration eveningOnce a year the school’s teaching departments come together to identify and reward students for their attitude to learning and progress made. We were very lucky as a school to seek sponsorship from a few local companies. These companies provided a prize of £50 Amazon voucher for students to spend on educational materials. We were very fortunate this year to have Dr Dave Heeley (Blind Dave) as guest speaker. He proved to be such an inspirational speaker to both students and guests that Crestwood are looking forward to working with him in the future.
