Prevent the Spread of COVID-19 in Buildings

Over the past 3 months, the combat against the spread of COVID-19

becomes a global issue. For Hong Kong, the new infection cases has

been decreasing. That is an encouraging trend.

Having said that, the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of

the Department of Health advises that we should remain

vigilant :

On a community level, maintain at all times strict personal

and environmental hygiene, reduce gathering, keep social

distancing, which are keys to personal protection against

infection and prevention of the spread of the disease;

On a personal level, wear a surgical mask when having

respiratory symptoms, taking public transport or staying in

crowded places; perform hand hygiene frequently,

especially before touching the mouth, nose or eyes as

well;

As for household environmental hygiene, maintain

drainage pipes properly, regularly pour water into drain

outlets (U-traps) and cover all floor drain outlets when

they are not in use. After using the toilet, they should put

the toilet lid down before flushing to avoid spreading

germs."

There are over 9,000 high rise buildings in HK. For April

FMC, we recap the good practices of building design

against spread of diseases, see FM Blog for details.

Good Design against Spread of Disease COVID-19 in Buildings

Schematic diagram of anti-siphonage pipes Apartment designs that adopt pipe ducts

Source : Ir Dr Eddy W T Lau, Healthy building design in response to COVID

-19 outbreak, April 2020, Hong Kong Engineer

Lessons learnt from recent Hong Mei House incident -

possibly caused by dismantling of a “vent pipe”; the cut end

of the vent pipe was not properly sealed, foul air might have

escaped into the bathroom.

To control the mal-practices, the following advices are

recapped for reference :

Vent pipes are mandatory under Regulation 30 of

Building (standards of Sanitary Fitments, Plumbing,

Drainage Works and Latrines);

Major disadvantages of indoors pipe ducts : difficult to

produce a durable watertight sealing around the vertical

penetrations, resulting in water seepage; ineffective

repair and replacement efforts;

Major advantages of external piping : water seepage

from upper floor to lower floor is prevented; each floor

is provided with a drain in the form of a vertical grating,

thus preventing the unhygienic situation from

happening.

Please refer to the captioned article for full details.

of the Council, the Institute has laid down the CPD requirements for its members.

In brief, all members (including fellows) and associates should complete a minimum of 20 hours per year

on a mandatory basis starting from 1 July 2015. The CPD may come under 3 categories:

(1) education and training, (2) community, institutional and social services, (3) private study.

A minimum of 10 hours should fall within the type of education and training, of which at least 4 hours

should be FM related activities. Private study should be subject to a maximum claim of 5 hours per year.

The detailed requirements have been uploaded to the HKIFM homepage. Please click HERE for details.
