Editorial

Dear Friends,

With the current issue of our Journal of Indian Orthodontic Society (JIOS), I as an editor have reached on a personal frontier, wherein either I get honored to continue the future trends in Indian orthodontics with you as your editor or hand over the baton to a more competent commander of this fabled starship enterprise at IOS, Kolkata. The decision is yours and I abide by it at all times.

The journal has broken numerous barriers in the 4 years. A customized web site, followed by the archiving of previous issues of JIOS starting from 2001. Contributions from our esteemed members as well as institutions led to better quality reporting, indexing, online access, and inclusion of large number of research, case reports and clinical innovations. Personally, the most satisfying achievement was to accommodate more number of articles in these 4 years than were published in the last 8 years, and be able to help my fellow members of the orthodontic fraternity in fulfilling their academic obligations as per Dental Council of India norms. This was done at no additional financial burden on the already stretched resources of the IOS. This leads me to believe that the JIOS can be made self-financed in the near future!! It is a matter of time that the JIOS shall reach the pinnacle that is its destiny, and come what may we cannot fight time...

This issue brings to the forefront good research on facial musculature and its influence on malocclusion. Two very interesting articles by Amol Ashokrao Verulkar et al and Raj Kumar Singh et al highlight the importance of musculature and anatomy in general in the cause and treatment of malocclusion. Treatment of impacted teeth is usually difficult and it is further complicated, if multiple teeth are involved. Two such case reports exemplify the care that is required to achieve quality results. A new treatment mode is presented in the clinical management of cleft palate. Though unconventional, it deserves a mention as it might lead to an alternative way to treat such patients.

The issue of ergonomics has been touched upon in this issue, which will greatly influence the future of efficient orthodontic practices. My personal favorite from this issue is the Talon Cusp Appliance by Binnoy Kurian et al. Not only Binnoy is my senior from college but because the appliance is practically unbreakable and I happen to practice in a belt where every third patient exhibits a skeletal Class II malocclusion, due to a short and/or retropositioned mandible.

Someone once said ‘Life is a journey with problems to solve, lessons to learn but most of all experiences to enjoy.’ I have thoroughly enjoyed this experience and I am extremely grateful to my entire editorial team, the peer-reviewers and readers for this journey and would like to continue to explore future frontiers with you all.

Best Regards

Gurkeerat SinghEditor, JIOS
