RENOVATIONS AND UPDATES!

W e all get excited when we

have an opportunity to ren-

ovate and upgrade a living

room or kitchen in our homes, and the

same is certainly true when we have a

chance to improve the living space in

which we do ministry together. Over

the past several weeks you are sure to

have noticed a surge of activity in our

downstairs areas leading to our Servant

Kids Space and Choir Room, as well as

the tarps covering the main waterfall in

the concourse. All this is a function of

our congregation’s commitment to these

vital ministries.

These renovations are focused on three

necessary features. First, a “deep clean-

ing” and necessary maintenance to the

main waterfall. This wonderful feature

has been in continuous operation since

Church of the Servant first opened its

doors at our North MacArthur location

in 1993. It was time that we reset and

replace planters and plants, repair small

leaks, give the surface a bath and a scrub

to remove two generations of hard-wa-

ter mineral accumulation, and work on

refinishing the surface of the waterfall

to its original beauty. Interestingly, this

is one renovation that came with its own

internal fund-raising effort. We found a

significant amount of “small change” had

missed the offering plate and had instead

been tossed over the railing into the

lower pool! Every dime counts!

Secondly, we are replacing all the carpet-

ing in the lower concourse with a new

floating LVT floor. This new flooring,

while being both beautiful and excep-

tionally durable, has the advantage of

being easy to clean and maintain. As

anyone with a basement in central Okla-

homa understands, flooding and water

damage are an ever-present possibility.

This flooring is designed to withstand

short term water damage and bounce

back without the mold and mildew

possible with traditional carpeting. As an

added bonus, the two staircases leading

to the lower level will be resurfaced

with a non-slip rubberized flooring

intended to enhance safety as well as

minimize ongoing maintenance.

And finally, we are taking this oppor-

tunity to upgrade the “check-in” area to

Servant Kids. As a first point of contact

between guests, their children, and

Church of the Servant, this area needs

to be bright, inviting, and functional. A

new bank of computer touch-screens—

one of which will be dedicated to

assisting families new to Church of the

Servant—as well as kid-friendly furni-

ture, and wall graphics that are both

informative and engaging will provide a

new look and feel to a ministry vital to

our ongoing success.

Funding for this project is coming from

two sources. Over the years through

careful management, Church of the

Servant has been able to accumulate ex-

cess funds from the operation of Warm

World and Starbright (our Mother’s Day

Out program). On any given year this

accumulation of funds might be small,

but much like a savings account, small

deposits over time can make a big differ-

ence! These earnings are now being put

to use in a repair and renovation project

which will directly impact and improve

these two cherished ministries. The rest

of the funds are coming from a gener-

ous advance gift for the larger planned

church improvements we hope to begin

in 2020. These repairs are a small part

of the proposed updates, the full scale of

which will be communicated with the

congregation in the coming months.

We are grateful to be able to provide

these crucial improvements as they

enhance the environment in which

Servant Kids—one of our most strategic

and essential ministries—functions.

These improvements are the result of the

thoughtful work of the congregation’s

Trustees, the Finance Committee, and

the church staff. But even more so, it is a

result of the faithful financial support of

you – the individual members and fami-

lies of Church of the Servant. Thank you!

DISCIPLESHIPTRANSFORM YOUR FAITH THROUGH DISCIPLE FAST-TRACKTrying to read the entire Bible is an amazing, but challenging goal, especially if you are reading on your own. Disciple Fast Track is a Bible study where you will join with others in diving into the Old and New Testament scriptures. Rev. Matt Patrick will be teaching the class and helping you not just read the scriptures but understand them as well. It is two 10-week studies in which you will cover the Old Testament and the New Testament. Sundays, September 15 – November 17, you will cover the Old Testament. Sundays, January 12 – March 15, 2020, will be focused on the New Testament.

Participants will read 3 – 5 chapters of the Bible daily in preparation for the weekly meetings held on Sundays from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. in North Adult Center, Room 12. LIVING YOUR STRENGTHSYou will be most successful in whatever you do by building your life around your greatest natural abilities. Most of us have been conditioned at home, in church, at work, and in school to correct our weaknesses. Contrary to this, the Gallup organization highlights that our talents should be our primary focus, not our deficiencies. This course will put you in touch with the unique combina-tion of strengths that you have been given which places you with a calling—a calling to serve others and to advance the cause of Christ and the Church, a calling to ministry. When you discover your talents, you begin to discover your calling. Living Your Strengths will meet for seven sessions on Sundays, September 22 – November 3 from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. in the Library in the North Offiice Complex. Led by Eric Nance and Randy Crownover. The cost is $40 which covers the book and the Living Your Strengths assessment test. Register at ServantOKC.org/BibleStudies.

BUCK AND A BIBLEGrab your Bible and $1.00 to cover the cost of a donut or muffin and join a group of early-rising, God-filled, fun-loving men in a study led by our senior minister, Dr. Matthew Mitchell. WOMEN IN THE WORD (WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDY) This large group Bible Study is a favorite among many women, as it appeals to both the beginning follower and the seasoned believer. Prime Time’s new season is finally here! Prime Time will start this season on Sep-tember 12 with special entertainment by

one of our favorites, Gospel Guitar Guys (G3), who will bring us their own brand of “American Gospel” – a combination of bluegrass, rock and roll, country, blues, and jazz. And a super-special and familiar face is joining them this time! If you’ve never heard Gospel Guitar Guys, you’re in for a real treat!

The program alone is only $2, or if you want to add one of Michele Snow’s fabulous lunches, the whole sweet deal is only $10! This month, we’ll enjoy lasagna, Italian veggies, salad, and a surprise dessert! Folks, her “Yum Factor” is off the charts!

MARK YOUR CALENDARS!VETERANS SUNDAY IS ON NOVEMBER 10, 2019!At the 9:30 a.m. service, we will be honoring our Veterans with a parade of Veterans into the Cel-ebration Center. The Celebration Choir and Worship Orchestra will be playing each service’s song as they enter the sanctuary, and the Oklahoma City Highlander Pipe and Drum Corps will also be in attendance to add their cinematic musical flare to the event.

Veterans, we are gathering at 8:30 a.m. in Community Hall for coffee and fellowship. If you plan on participating in the parade this year, we ask that you arrive no later than 9:00 a.m. as we will begin assembling the group at this time to prepare for the parade.

Also, we will create a slideshow again this year, and we would like to have you bring in one recent photo and one photo from when you were on duty back in the day. We need to have these by Sunday, October 27, so our team has sufficient time to do their magic.

Veterans Sunday should be another outstanding event, and we look forward to each and every one of you being here.

A STORY FROM ONE OF OUR VETERANS At Christmas in 1970, I was chosen (by lottery) from my Marine Artillery Battery to attend the Bob Hope Christmas Show at Freedom Hill PX out-side of Da Nang City, South Vietnam. This was significant to me because my Dad had seen a Bob Hope Christmas Show in 1942 in North Africa during World War II.

Headliners at the 1970 show were not only Bob Hope and baseball catcher Johnny Bench but also the current reigning Miss America, Jane Ann Jayroe. The significance of that is that on Sunday mornings I can look across the Celebration Center and sitting there is the former Miss America, Jane Ann Jayroe Gambell!!!!

MUSIC AT SERVANT

CELEBRATION CHOIR: High School age and up (no audition). Various seasonal choral groups will sing throughout the sea-son. The choir tours every other year, most recently to Ireland.In years past, we traveled to Italy and New York City. The choir shares the great music of the faith on these tours, but more importantly, each Sunday morning in the “Servant Traditional” service. We invite you to be a part of this exceptional group of people that serve our Lord through the gift of Music. Rehearsal is Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. in the Choir Room (downstairs).

WORSHIP ORCHESTRA: Students and Adults (no audition). Jazz and Wind ensembles play throughout the seasonDust off those old band and orchestra instruments and play again, but this time for the glory of the Risen Lord! Worship Orchestra is also an excellent opportunity for students to be a part of a safe community of believers practicing their faith through Music. Rehearsal is Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m.

CELEBRATION RINGERS: Adult Bell Choir. If you have a basic understanding of Music fundamentals, we want you! Rehearsal is Thursdays at 6:00 p.m.

BRONZE: Youth Bell Choir. This is a touring choir (one open spot). This bell choir is an impressive group of young people, each an accomplished musician in their right. This bell choir is an advanced group keeping the age-old art of Bells Alive! Bronze rehearses on Sunday afternoon.

This non-audition, low-pressure group for 1st through 5th graders will rehearse in the choir room from 11:15 a.m. to Noon on Sunday morn-ings, leading up to a grand performance in the 9:30 Celebration Center service on Sunday, November 10. If music is not your thing, don’t worry! Kids

will also have the option to attend JSTEM: Jesus, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathemat-ics - led by our Servant Kids ministry team. This 8-week elective session is sure to be fun for all!

Kids will gather downstairs in their regular spaces at their regular times. We will spend time together before dismissing kids to their chosen electives.

GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP Have you experienced the loss of a loved one? If so, perhaps you would benefit from our Grief Support Group at Church of the Servant. Whether you have recently expe-rienced the death of a loved one, or if you have been on a grief journey for a long time, we hope you’ll consider joining the group. We’ll meet on Thursday evenings (6:30–8:00 p.m.) beginning on September 12 & continu-ing through November 21. WHERE DO YOU THINK YOU STAND ON THE GLOBAL RICH LIST? I’ve been reading, Junkyard Wisdom by Roy Goble. It states that someone mak-ing $32,000 a year is in the top 1% of the wealthiest people in the world. That was hard to believe! So, I went to the website. It is a straightforward website to navi-gate – one simply types in a net salary and it produces your standing. Also, it tells you how long it would take someone in Indonesia, for example, to make what you earn. The figures come from the U.N. and the World Health Organization.

Why is this worthy of an article? Many of my friends at Church of the Servant and

the surrounding community have told me they feel we are unaware of the hard-ships plaguing other countries. What this brought home to me is that a significant number of people in our state have much more wealth in comparison with the rest of the world than I ever thought. Accord-ing to payscale.com, the average person in Oklahoma City makes an annual salary of $47,837. According to Global Rich List that puts the person in OKC in the top .35% in the world! That person makes just under $25 per hour compared to a person in Ghana who makes only 8 cents an hour.

Oklahoma is not a financially wealthy state compared to many others in the U.S., which makes these statistics even more disturbing. We are SO wealthy in the U.S. I’m not advocating redistributing that wealth or denying that many people in our state struggle financially. It just made me pause and take a look at my own priorities.

KENYA 2019 TEAM REPORTSUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 22The Kenya Team Report was initially scheduled in February, but the electricity was out. It has been scheduled again for Sunday, September 22 at 11:00 a.m. in Chapel of the Cross.

This event is open to everyone, and Sunday school classes are welcome! Dr. Nelson Agudelo will be presenting his short but informative talk on the significant progress made in fighting AIDS in Kenya.

If you would like to learn more about the next Kenya Mission Trip, brochures will be available. The dates for the trip are July 2 – 17, 2020. Come and join us on Sunday, September 22, to learn more about Kenya and Church of the Servant’s partnership with the Maua Methodist Hospital! Our heart continues to grow for Maua. We are making a difference.

AUGUST WAS A BUSY MONTH FOR

SERVANT KIDS!Not only did our kids go back to

school, but we also went to Yee-Haw Kids Camp at Canyon Camp,

had the annual swim party for the fourth and fifth graders, and trained

and consecrated new acolytes. We celebrated Move Up Sunday with Sun-

dae Sunday, and we started a facelift of the downstairs area. We are looking

forward to another great school year!

TREK: AN ADVENTURE IN TRUSTEVERY SUNDAY MORNING IN SEPTEMBERGRADES 1-5

This month, we will be learning about the connection between trust and God’s character, as shown through God’s big story. Trust is putting your confidence in someone you can depend on. Throughout history, God has proven His faithful-ness to us, especially in keeping His promise to send Jesus to save us. God will continue to be dependable. The Bible is filled with examples of people who knew first-hand what it means to trust God. This month, we focus on two of them: Jacob and Joseph. Through their stories, we’ll discover how we can trust Him no matter what we face.

Our memory verse this month comes from Proverbs 3:5 and says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Do not depend on your own understanding.” We will dis-cuss how you can trust God, no matter what. We will also talk about how when life doesn’t make sense, or you think you’re alone, you can trust God is with you. God is with you when the pressure is on, and you can trust that God has a plan. Join us for a new session each Sunday morning this month!

When is the last time you took the time to really look at everything God made? Taking a moment to take a walk outside or

look up the wonders of the world online will totally change the way you share this month’s Bible stories with preschoolers. We need

that WONDER dial turned way up! And the best way to do that is to experience some of that wonder.

When we take the time to look at this amazing world God made, we are filled with awe and wonder. It’s that feeling of wonder we want our

preschoolers to have as they learn about God’s creation. We are going to do a lot of counting together this month—one, two, three, four, five, six,

seven—pausing to learn what God made on each day of creation. Through our fun and exciting activities and stories, we want our preschoolers to

learn that God created everything, and IT IS GOOD!

Our memory verse this month comes from Genesis 1:31 and says, “God saw everything He had made. And it was very good.” The Bible teaches us that

God made everything. We look forward to seeing you on Sunday mornings in September!

THIRD GRADE BIBLE SUNDAYSEPTEMBER 29Church of the Servant celebrates our third graders each year by presenting them with their own Bible. These celebrations will take place in the 9:30 Celebration Center Service and 11:00 Modern Service in the Centrum, sharing this beautiful milestone with the congregation. M o r e H a p p e n i n g s…SERVANT 45 – STARTED SEPTEMBER 4Calling all 4th and 5th graders! We will be meeting weekly on Wednesday nights beginning September 4, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. This will be a fun time of Bible study, games, and connecting with old friends while making new friends! We will start by studying the creation story in Genesis and will move forward from there as the year progresses. Dinner will not be provided except on the last Wednesday night of each month (September 25 and October 30). We will meet weekly until the first week of December, but we will take a break for Fall Break and Thanksgiving. Invite your friends to join in the fun of these events! Bring a Bible you can write in. We have a few Bibles for sale (that go with the curriculum) for $20 if you need one.

Children’s Moment at Back-to-School Blessing

WEDNESDAY NIGHTSThis school year, we will not be offer-ing Wednesday night programming for kids in preschool through third grade. Over the past few years of working hard to create new and creative Wednes-day night programming for preschool through third grade, we have seen that programming on school nights for kids of this age can be difficult for both the kids and their families. We desire to de-crease some of the busyness of families and provide an even greater emphasis on our Sunday morning programming.

PLEASE NOTE: While we won’t have Wednesday night programming for all ages, the nursery is open and available for kids from birth through 3rd grade whose parents are attending events in the building.

WEEKLY DEVOTIONALS FOR FAMILIES AND KIDSOn our website, we have a section on the KIDS page (ServantOKC.org/KIDS) with weekly devotionals. These devotionals include activities that go along with the lesson learned on the previous Sunday morning. We would like to encourage you to spend a few minutes each day with your child(ren) reinforcing what they have learned about that week during Total Group and small groups. We also post Bible readings, reflection questions, and more each day on Instagram and/or Facebook. When the church and family work together to enforce the concepts and lessons, we will have the greatest impact on the lives of our kids!

HONK HONK!! SAVE THE DATE FOR SERVANT FALL FEST!Servant Fall Fest and Trunk-or-Treat is back! Join us on Friday, October 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. for Church of the Servant’s annual family-friendly Fall Fest. Again for this year, Servant Fall Fest will include a trunk-or-treat, where kids can safely trick-or-treat and play games in our parking lot. Guests will also enjoy favorites like inflatables, face painting, balloon animals, a cakewalk, therapy dogs, the Hot Dog Cafe, cotton candy and popcorn sales, and a bake sale. In case of rain, all activities (other than the cars!) will be moved indoors. A fireworks show will conclude the evening.

The excitement and outreach generated from Fall Fest last year was incredible. Can you help us continue that success? Please stop by the Servant Fall Fest table in the concourse Sunday, Sept. 15 or 22 to sign up to lend a hand -- or a trunk! You can also register online at https://servantokc.org/ministries/kids. We need Sunday School classes, Bible study groups, small groups, families, groups of friends, and individuals to commit to providing a car and passing out candy during Servant Fall Fest. We welcome decorated trunks and costumed volunteers, and there will be prizes awarded! We also need hospitality volunteers during the event, help with set-up and clean-up, do-nations of baked goods for the bake sale and cakewalk, and do-nations of bags of individually-wrapped candies. Servant Students hosted their Back-2-School Bash last week! We kicked off our Fall Semester with a bang! We had over 30 visitors come and over 30 adults partnering with us to create such a fantastic event for our students. Big thanks to all of our wonderful leaders that came! SERVANT HIGH SCHOOL FALL PROGRAMMING:SUNDAY MORNING: High School Sunday Morning is for all 9th-12th-grade students. It starts at 9:30 a.m. in The Point Student Center. Our morning includes breakfast, games, teaching, and adult leaders leading discussion.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT: Wednesday Night meets from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. and in-cludes a time of worship, teaching, and small group discussion. We start in Chapel of the Cross and will dismiss from there to small groups. Post small groups begins at 7:30 and is located in The Point Student Center for games and fellowship.

Servant Middle School Retreat: “Next”

All 6th-8th-grade students are invited to come to enjoy this in-credible weekend at Canyon Camp spent learning how to grow a faith that lasts. WHEN: Friday, November 1 – Sunday, November 3 WHERE: Canyon Camp in Hinton, Oklahoma COST: $125.00 (includes transportation, lodging, all meals, t-shirt, worship experience, and all recreational activities) DETAILS: We will be meeting here at Church of the Servant at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, and we will be returning to the church on Sunday at noon. You will need to eat dinner before you come to church on Friday. Get ready for the best weekend ever! WHAT TO BRING: Sleeping bag (or twin-size bedding), pillow, toi-letries, Bible, pen, notebook, water bottle, flashlight, tennis shoes, bug spray, CLOTHES THAT ARE OKAY TO GET DIRTY, and towels. SERVANT MIDDLE SCHOOL

We are all about helping 6th through 8th grade students become fully committed followers of Jesus Christ. We meet on Sunday mornings at 9:30 a.m. and Wednesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. in The Point Student Center, located at the south end of the Church.

Our programs offer relevant and age-based teaching, small groups, worship, special events, and mission opportunities. We hope you will join us this week!

On Wednesday, August 28, Servant Middle School hosted our Back-2-School Bash! The students had a lot of fun starting our school year playing and laughing with one another. We are so proud of the middle school students for inviting 17 new guests, and we look forward to helping those guests find a home at Church of the Servant. Please join us in praying over each of these students and their school year!
