Are you thinking of having a break from 13 years of education? Maybe you can go on a year long vacation. Travel the world, soul search or simply earn some cash. On your break you can decide whether you want to study at Melbourne or Monash (or other unis, that’s cool too). As you know, the end of high school is near. So, here are some tips on how to make the most out of a gap year.

If travelling tickles your fancy, start planning. Decide whether you want to travel on your own or with friends. Backpacking or a Contiki tour. An entire year or a few months. Organise a trip that suits your budget.

There are plenty of volunteer opportunities overseas. Make sure you research dif ferent organisations and the programs they offf fer. Apply as early as you can because many volunteer programs have limited places.

Work experience and internships are also worthwhile

pursuits during your gap year. Send out your resume and get in touch with your contacts. Relatives, friends, companies, ANYONE. You’ll be sprucing up your resume, while also helping yourself out of the vicious ‘need experience to get experience’ cycle. Getting some work experience can help you narrow down which courses you’ll want to study after your gap year. Don’t forget, if you do paid work during your gap year, you’ll have some serious $$$ saved up by the end.

If you’re worried about your ATAR expiring, don’t be. ATARs have no expiration date; however, after f ive years some institutions may require you to sit a STAT, which is similar to a GAT. If you’re accepted into your chosen course, but you want to take a gap year, check with the institution about deferring your course.

Even though at uni some of your high school friends may be a year ahead. You would’ve had a gap year f illed with life experience instead.

Oh, the Places You’ll Go...

A Do you like to do annotations?B Or receive verbal explanations?C Do you like graphics here and there?D Do you like experiments everywhere?

A Do you interpret pictures into words?B Are you a major song lyric nerd?C Do you see mainly colours on a page?D Or do you like to act out plays?

A Do you like quizzes and multiple choice?B Does learning by listening make you rejoice?C Can you retain info from a video?D Is the trial and error method your hero?

A Does reading take you to another place?B Do you listen to teachers with patience and grace?C Can you summarise your text in a mind map?D Does movement and dance make learning a snap?

A Is writing lists a thing you do?B Is reciting info helpful for you?C Do charts and graphs make you delighted?D Do hands on activities make you excited?

MOSTLY AREADING/WRITING: You learn best by interacting with text rather than sound or images. Give yourself written quizzes and annotate info you read.

MOSTLY BAUDITORY: You prefer to hear info rather than reading it or seeing it displayed. Try reciting info aloud to process it, and use repetition to retain it.

MOSTLY CVISUAL: You prefer to see info and to visualise the relationships between ideas. Use charts and graphics to organise your thoughts.

MOSTLY DKINESTHETIC: You are a hands-on, experimental learner. Your best learning is done by doing, so stand up and move around as you study, and try acting out scenarios.

Figure out your learning style and leave VCESS with one big smile...
