Dear partners and friends,

I hope that you are safe and well. As 2020 draws to a close, it is safe to say that this year has been exceedingly difficult in so many different ways. However, it has also reaffirmed the importance and power of community, solidarity and resilience. I remain confident that better days are ahead of us.

Despite the continued difficult circumstances, Québec artists will be active and present across the territory covered by the Québec Government Office in

London this coming cultural season. Many performances have been able to move online, again paying testament to the adaptability and determination of Québec artists and their partners.

I am also delighted to mention a number of exciting developments. New rounds of collaboration funding will shortly be announced, and we are welcoming a new member to the cultural team! Please continue reading over the next few pages to find out more.

As we all continue to spend more time at home, I invite you to take a look at the impressive programme of Québec television available to watch on TV5Monde. The channel has recently launched a new app, TV5MondePlus, making francophone content more accessible than ever before. I would personally like to thank TV5Monde for being such a brilliant long-term partner of ours.

The cultural team remain at your disposition to support you in your projects and goals of collaboration with Québec artists and organisations.

Take care,

Pierre Gabriel CôtéAgent-General, Québec Government Office in London

A word from our new Director for Culture

Dear Québec partners and friends,

As the new Director for Culture at the Québec Government Office in London, I am honoured to join a dedicated and dynamic cultural team. Driven by its core mandate of market development and collaboration with local partners, the cultural team works to develop international co-operation, partnerships, exchange and residency programmes between Québec and the UK, Ireland and the Nordic Countries. I cannot wait to proactively respond to and develop the continuing demand for Québec’s unique and innovative cultural creations and expertise.

Originally from Québec, I have been living in Scotland for five years. I have over twenty years’ experience in the cultural sector and have worked across the industry as an artist and arts administrator, extensively promoting artistic collaboration.

I look forward to working with you all. Do not hesitate to get in touch with me or my team to see how we might collaborate.

Québec-UK Connections

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, all beneficiaries of the 2019-2020 call for projects have been given a one-year extension to support their completion. A next joint call for proposals between the British Council and the Québec Government will be launched next year. Since its inception in 2002, the programme has very successfully encouraged new cultural exchanges and developed partnerships between Québec and UK organisations and artists.

In collaboration with Québécois Director François Racine, Kathy Domoney, Director of Domoney Artists Management, created Opera Breaks to showcase singers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Singing well-known opera “hits”, the singers are seen recording their arias and ensembles in studio, then filmed in a variety of outdoor locations in Toronto.

Featured in Offenbach’s famous Barcarolle duet from Les contes d’Hoffmann, Québécois mezzo soprano Marjorie Maltais is seen paddling a canoe at sunset on Lake Ontario in this dreamy film. She also makes an appearance in Toreador from Carmen. Maltais is rapidly earning an excellent reputation on both concert and operatic stages in Canada and beyond. Marjorie won First Prize at the Ottawa Choral Society’s New Discoveries Competition in 2016.

François Racine directed these three short films. Racine is firmly established as one of the most visionary leaders on today’s opera scene, engaged by companies throughout North America and beyond. Acclaimed for his powerful staging of Bluebeard’s Castle/Erwartung with Seattle Opera, Racine received accolades for his innovative interpretation of Dido and Aeneas in Chaux de Fonds, Switzerland in 2010.

Cirque du SoleilCorteo

25-28 February 2021Ericsson GlobeStockholm, Sweden

From the streets of small-town Québec to the world stage, a team of street performers became the international phenomenon that is Cirque du Soleil today.

Corteo, which means “cortege” in Italian, is a joyous procession, a festive parade imagined by a clown. The show brings together the passion of the actor with the grace and power of the acrobat to plunge the audience into a theatrical world of fun, comedy and spontaneity situated in a mysterious space between heaven and earth. The clown pictures his own funeral taking place in a carnival atmosphere, watched over by quietly caring angels.
