Morocco 2011 probes for oil

MADRID A new Penal Code on which the Spanish Government is now working will toughen the punishment for street vandalism during public protests likening it to the crime of belonging to criminal organization and serious disturbance of public order through any media, including the Internet.

This has been announced by sources from the Interior Ministry after the head of this department, Jorge Fernandez

Diaz, stated in Congress that the punishment of those involved in vandalism is to be equated with terrorism, contibuting to “the spiral of violence” of collective gatherings which use the techniques of “urban guerrilla” warfare.

The minister, who detailed several of the points of the reform, could not yet fully read the reference to a call for violence, as the President of the House indicated that

the time for his speech was over. Thus, Fernandez Diaz has yet to read the controversical part of his presentation in which he he will announce that “operations intended to severely disrupt public order and those who conspire to this end by any means of communication” will be regarded in the same manner as the offense of belonging to criminal organization.

The minister himself spoke of the conditions under

which any offense intended to attack the authority of the state, whether through passive or active resistance would be included within “modalities of assault” and violent attack against any police-led action through threats and intimidating behavior or throwing dangerous objects would be considered in the same light as direct violent behavior when promoted at events and public meetings, and that it will be included

as an offense of disorderly conduct. On this line, the updated Penal Code is reportedly intended to address the amount of damage not only arising from from such gatherings, but also which result from the interruption of any public service or pólice action.

The nine Consulates and 13 Honorary Consuls across Spain are part of one of the largest global consular networks of any country in the world. Whether you are in the Balearics or the Canaries, basking on the Costas or working in a provincial town or city, there is a representative of the Foreign Office somewhere not too far from you. And before you go anywhere, it’s easy to call us to see if we can resolve your enquiry straight away – in four out of five cases, we do.

But sometimes it’s not so easy. I was very struck by the Foreign Secretary William Hague’s speech on consular services earlier this month (April) . In it he said “Consular work is very personal. It touches the lives of British citizens in difficult and sometimes extreme circumstances”.

Indeed, the working day of consular staff is neither routine nor rosy. They are effectively an emergency service for Brits in distress, from lost passports to serious crime to death. The job of a consular officer is to provide impartial, non-judgmental advice and to treat you fairly and equally, no matter who you are. Their work, and the sight of the Union Flag hanging outside the building, often make a huge difference to anyone who finds themselves in frightening and stressful circumstances.

The professionalism of our staff has just been reflected in ‘Our Man In…’, an excellent

TV documentary series on Channel 4 in the UK, watched by more than three million people. The images of staff dealing with a wide range of ‘Brits in trouble’ – from visiting a convicted murderer in prison to a nasty Taser incident involving Spanish police - led to widespread praise in national newspapers like The Sun, Daily Mail and The Guardian. I am very proud of the work they do.

And there are many things that we can do. We will provide help if you are unfortunate enough to be the victim of a serious crime such as sexual assault. If you are injured and in hospital, we will visit you if there is a need. If you are arrested or detained, we will also visit you as soon as possible after arrest, if that is what you want. And if you are in prison, we will visit you to monitor your welfare, to help you understand the local legal and prison system, to put you in touch with support networks and to help you find an English-speaking lawyer.

During the year 2010/11, our consulates in Spain handled the largest number of cases of any country in the world – almost 5000. We dealt with over 1700 arrests and more than 1000 hospitalisations, as well as assisting Britons involved in some of the most upsetting and unpleasant crimes - 19 reported cases of rape and 33 of sexual assault. Six of our offices - in Malaga, Alicante, Palma de Mallorca, Tenerife,

Ibiza and Las Palmas - were in the top 10 British Consulates worldwide for the total number of assistance cases handled.

But there are other things we cannot do. Almost two million people contact the Foreign Office worldwide for some form of consular assistance each year - that is more than 37,000 people a week. With these vast numbers, you can understand that Consulates cannot give you money, make travel arrangements for you, pay your bills, arrange funerals or repatriate bodies. It wouldn’t be fair to give public money to those who fail to take out travel insurance when others show the good sense to buy a policy from their own pockets.

We cannot override local authorities, such as police investigating crimes. And we cannot give you legal advice because our staff are not lawyers – although of course we can help find you an English-speaking one.

Finally, although we cannot use public resources to resolve private property disputes, here in Spain we most certainly continue to lobby the Spanish authorities at every level to urge them to resolve the generic legal problems which are affecting thousands of British property owners. The British Embassy in Madrid is the only one in the world to have a full-time property adviser. Britons bought some 4,000 homes in Spain last year, down from a peak of 17,000 in 2007. We

are working hard to get the message out about seeking independent, professional advice before buying in order to avoid a future generation of property problems.

Of course, there are things that British nationals should do to help themselves. Residents really must register on the Padrón, and I’m pleased that more and more are – 397,000 at the latest count. Not only is it the law, but it’s also the way to access public services and a range of other benefits whilst avoiding extra costs for both the Spanish and UK authorities.

Meanwhile, visitors to Spain can avoid huge amounts of heartache and financial pain simply by taking out travel insurance. Every week our staff are faced with heart-rending cases involving medical or other bills running into many thousands of pounds, simply because people didn’t spend

the price of a meal on a travel policy.

‘Have you got travel insurance?’ is one of the first questions our staff ask. If the answer is ‘No’, then they – and you as an expat resident hosting them - could be facing a very big financial problem. When you hear about a fund-raising campaign among friends and family to help someone get back to the UK, it’s usually because they didn’t have travel insurance.

British citizens in Spain are fortunate. The British government is better represented on the ground than any other European or Commonwealth nation. That means that help is nearer, with more expertise about how things work in Spain, when you really need it. But we can’t do everything and I hope this article also helps people to recognise that they can do things to help themselves.

Consular help is at hand, but expats can self-help too

Ambassador Giles Paxman spells out what British Consulates do and what British nationals can do for themselves

Extracts from speech by Foreign Secretary William Hague on what the FCO can do for Brits abroad:“If you are a British national and if you get into genuine difficulty abroad, you can turn to the Foreign Office for certain types of assistance. We help people who have lost their passports or need to find a doctor or legal advice, or who are struggling with bereavement in a country they don’t know well.Often the circumstances are tragic and upsetting: we help the parent whose child has been abducted by their former partner; the traumatised victim of rape; the devastated family whose son has committed suicide; the distraught boyfriend whose partner has been murdered; or the vulnerable girl or boy who has been forced into marriage against their will. But there are also cases where members of the public waste time and scarce resources with ludicrous requests. It is not our job, for example, to book you restaurants while you are on holiday. This is obvious, you may think. But nonetheless it came as a surprise to the caller in Spain who was having difficulty finding somewhere to have Christmas lunch. If like a man in Florida last year, you find ants in your holiday rental, we are not the people to ask for pest control advice. If you are having difficulty erecting a new chicken coop in your garden in Greece as someone else did, I am afraid that we cannot help you. So we ask British nationals to be responsible, to be self-reliant and to take sensible precautions. We cannot emphasise enough the importance of good travel insurance. If you do find yourselves needing our help, we do ask British nationals to be prepared to pay for certain services; consular assistance is paid for from fees and not from taxation, and where we do charge a fee for a service, we only do so to cover our costs. In return, we maintain one of the most extensive and most effective consular networks of any country in the world.”

Most of you reading this will never have come into contact with a British Consulate. In many ways, I hope you never do. But there’s no guarantee of that. It’s inevitable that with more than thirteen

million British visitors to Spain annually, and an estimated 800,000 Britons who live here, every year there will be a few thousand who do need help – and that’s what we’re here for.

Last year the Moroccan government prospected for oil eleven times in the waters near the median which separates Spanish territo-rial waters from those of Morocco. From 1969 to present, the country has reportedly au-thorised 39 such exploratory sites, according to a report from the Directorate Gen-eral for Energy Policy of the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism.Under Secretary of State, Henry Hernandez Bento, asked questions about this last week referring to the controversial trip to Morocco by the Canarian President, Paulino Rivero, on April

12th, when he met with King Mohammed VI. The monarch reportedly assured the president that his country had detected no regional offshore oil and therefore “there is no expectation of future oil ex-ploration.” However, a min-istry spokesman expressed surprise to Rivero on the basis that “Spain requires a lot more [evidence] than that required by Morocco.” He asked what the regional president thought of the fact that “ in 2011 eleven sites drilled to see whether or not there is oil” in the area. In his view, this is “a clear example of the Moroccan govern-ment’s interest in extracting

oil. “ He made criticism that the Canaries government has not condemned the Moroccan authorisations nor organized demonstrations against them, unlike their position over the Spanish state’s granting of similar licences. The Under Secretary of State reminded Canarians that the central government has not authorised Repsol to extract oil but simply to research whether or not it exists. If they find oil, the oil company would have to ask further permission from the Ministry, who would “apply environ-mental measures in force at the time” he said. On the legal challenge launched, Hernandez said the Ministry was “calm” after learning that The European Commission has received complaints from Cabildos of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote against the Royal Decree approved by Spain to grant oil exploration off the coasts of both islands. The Ministry hopes to have developed the process “correctly” and “ful-fil all the legal procedures, to have favourable reports from the State Bar. The Ministry for Industry is “confident that this [project] will continue and there will be no problem.”

A total of 20 tons have been removed in recent weeksSwimmers returned to the beach of Las Canteras this week, although the weather on offer was not the most suitable, after the jellyfish which have been appearing over recent weeks had almost completely disappeared and the Red Cross lifted its recommendation not to bathe for this reason. The NGO raised the green flag on Sunday after the red flag had been flown due to the numerous jellyfish appearing over the last

three weeks at the main beach of the capital. After collecting a record of four tons of jellyfish on Friday, the City reported yesterday that the city’s Cleaning services had collected only about 30 kilos on Sunday. According to some sources, the Pelagia noctiluca have gone back to sea again having been swept out by the north wind and driven away by the drop in water temperatures experienced in the coastal capital over the weekend. In fact, the Red Cross on Sunday only attended to one minor jellyfish sting that

occurred at the height of tide. Despite the green flag, the cloudy sky and cold air deterred the city’s population from flocking to the beach, so rescuers had no major issues with the jellyfish or other incidents. With the surge on Friday, nearly 20 tons of jellyfish collected on the beach of Las Canteras in the last three weeks, frequency and amount of which that scientists recognize as unusual. The massive presence of jellyfish frustrated bathers more than once over Easter, in spite of the good weather.

The aircraft was on a scheduled route from Oslo to Tenerife. The suspect is known nationally for participating in a “reality show”A 38 year old Norwegian citizen was arrested on arrival in Tenerife, on a flight from Oslo last weekend, after he allegedly severely affected order on board

the flight by trying to open the emergency door, reported the Guardia Civil. The incident occurred on Sunday’s Nordic Tuifly BLX605 flight on a direct route from Oslo to Tenerife South, reportedly, the man is known nationally for his participation in a “reality show,” said the report. Once off the plane,

the man was arrested and charged with serious resistance to authority after showing “ uncooperative [behaviour] towards the officers” and trying to flee on foot. Civil Guard sources said that the detainee could be also be charged with a crime against aviation security.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday morning at a hotel in Playa del Inglés, Gran Canaria. A man died on Monday as a result of injuries sustained from a fall from the third floor of a hotel in southern Gran Canaria, said the Emergency Coordination Center and Security of the Canary Islands 112. The incident occurred at 0341

hours at a hotel in Calle Helsinki in the area of Playa del Inglés, Gran Canaria in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana. Medical staff from the Canarian Emergency services at the scene found that the victim was in cardiac arrest and carried out cardiopulmionar maneuvers attempting advanced resuscitation without result.

Tarajalejo neighbours, in the town of Tuineje, were shocked this weekend by the death of one Nicole Z. a German woman who was alleg-edly brutally killed by her former companion at dawn on Saturday. Traces of blood were still visible on the facade of the house, left alleged by the murderer as he fleed the scene. Claudio PD, the man arrested on suspicion of mur-der, had a police record for domestic violence in a previ-ous relationship. However Nicole had never denounced

any acts of this nature. Neighbours consulted by newspaper La Provincia described Nicole “as a good woman and neighbour.” Al-though they did not wish to be identified, they agreed that the woman “never had problems with anyone, and was very polite.” An aunt of the murdered woman, Ilka, who lives down the street, continues to receive counselling from the Battered Women’s Emergency service of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura. It was report-edly announced that she will

appear for the prosecution to “confirm authorship” accord-ing to the Minister of Social Affairs, Victor Alonso. An autopsy conducted on Sunday determined that the victim received nearly two dozen stab wounds, with the fatal one being to the neck. Condemning the death a Government Delegation in the Canary Islands called, on Monday, for one minute of silence to mark the death of Nicole, while the director of the Canarian Institute of Women has also condemned the murder.

How can you not love Swan Lake! Wonderfully dramatic music from Tchaikovski, a fairytale story of love finally triumphing over evil and the delightful contracts between the classically tutu-clad swans and the colourful ballgowns of the court scenes. Swan Lake has it all and has long been an audience favourite and arguably the most performed ballet in the world.

The film ‘The Black Swan’ has probably introduced a new generation to the art of classical ballet and to Swan Lake in particular. It also gave insight into the ultra-demanding life of a ballet soloist, and Odette/Odile is one of the most demanding roles in classical ballet, so much so that it is sometimes danced by two different dancers.

On a sunny Sunday afternoon an enthusiastic audience had the pleasure of watching this lovely ballet, performed by Ballet de Moscú on our own doorstep, in ExpoMeloneras, Maspalomas. The Moscow Ballet does a

great service to classical dance, bringing it out to the general public in provincial arenas. They tour our islands every season with old favourites such as Nutcracker and Sleeping Beauty, so every little girl and her mum have a chance to dream of pointe shoes and tutu’s, handsome princes and happy endings.

We were transported from sunshine and beaches to the gloomy forests of Russia, where the evil Count/magician Rothbart had transformed a princess and her court into swans, allowing them only to dance at night. The dancers were as enchanting as the story, the evil magician-count, the unhappy prince, the tragic heroine Odette who also dances as Odile in the second half, white swans, black swans, courtiers and not least, the light relief of the court jester, who stole the hearts of the whole audience with his antics, humour and dancing skill. For those who have experienced Swan Lake on a larger stage, some of the scenes were a

little cramped and didn’t give the dancers full potential, and we noted the odd ‘wobble’ here and there, but did it matter? Not at all! We were there to enjoy, not to critize and all but a few ‘afficionados’ thoroughly enjoyed the trip into fantasyland. Especially some little girls who charmingly put on their own dance performance outside after the show!

The leading roles this season were danced by Cristiana and Alexei Terentiev formerly solists with the National Opera and Ballet of Moldavia and winners of numerous prizes. (And to those of you with impudent comments about men in tights, let it be known that they are married, to each other, and have a little daughter!)

The Canary News will continue to keep you informed on the rich cultural experiences available on our little island paradise.

Nearly 100 loved ones, friends and colleagues joined together, on Friday April 20th to mourn the passing of Sparkles showbar performer Stephen Cann, known widely as drag superstar Tammy Pax.

Pastor Gavin Boyd, of the The International Evangelical English Church, led the service expressing great sympathy for Stephen’s family and wide circle of friends. In particular Steve’s partner Tony and his father Ken, to whom he was completely devoted.

Pastor Gavin continued saying “It is so obvious from what Tony has said and from the hundreds of messages posted on Facebook just how much Stephen was loved and how much also he will be missed.”

Stephen passed away

suddenly on Tuesday of last week. It was a shock to all who knew him. Stephen had several health problems over the years with anti-diabetics and their side effects, heart disease and of course his fight with, and it must be said victory over, cancer. He was rarely heard to complain and had given no indications in recent weeks or days that he was in anything other than 100% health which made the news of his death all the more shocking.

Stephen Cann was an East London boy and was characteristically a grafter, a self-motivated hard working go-getter. He bought his first house at the tender age of just nineteen and he continued to be a grafter throughout his life, enjoying some real success as a businessman. In recent years along with his beloved partner Tony and business partners, he owned

and ran Sparkles Show Bar, in the Yumbo Centre Playa del Inglés, and was one of its brightest stars. He will be sadly missed by all his friends and colleagues in Sparkles and by the regular visitors on whom he always made so lasting an impression.

Away from the stage lights Steve was a family man. His love for his father Ken and his tireless devotion to helping him is something of which all who were close to him particularly admired as well as for his deep love and affection shown to all those around him. A great animal lover, he and Tony kept quite a menagerie. His other great love was of course shopping, but in keeping with his roots and wise entrepreneurial experience, he was a great man for the bargains and was one of the Maspalomas Faro II’s best Car Boot Sale customers!

His father Ken said of Stephen “Often many people would come up and kiss him, and he didn’t have a clue who they were, but within a couple of minutes he could know all about them, it was his gift.”

Tony married Stephen just six months ago in a civil ceremony presided over by San Bartolomé de Tirajana Mayor Marco Aurelio, after their having been together for almost nineteen years. Throughout the funeral he showed the greatest of fortitude and dignity, especially after so sudden and unexpected a tragedy. Our thoughts are with him at this time.

Tony must be so very

proud that the man he loved above all was a man, and a showgirl, who touched so very many people in so many ways; through his rugged beauty, his sometimes brash comedy, his feminine elegance and his quick witted, no-holds-barred love of drawing the very best out in people, to ensuring his audiences were thoroughly entertained, no matter what, from the moment they met him to the moment the

curtain went down.Tammy died on a Tuesday,

sat at the end of the Sparkles bar. Buried on a Friday we sang to him his trademark tune (Sweet Caroline with full audience participation). He’ll never be forgotten by anyone who knew him, and without doubt, in an unexpected flash of sequins from the corner of your eye, he might still be glimpsed there yet, as he enjoys a drink and a laugh at your expense.

See you next Tuesday Tammy.

See you next Tuesday.

Buying a property is one of the most exciting and important projects in most people’s lives. If it is to be somewhere other than your home country it usually creates additional excitement as it is likely to be either a place to enjoy holidays or a new home for a new life abroad. For these reasons it should be considered a serious matter and not be undertaken lightly. Therefore, our initial advice for people planning to buy a property in Spain is to bear in mind that the procedure to complete a successful and

pleasant transaction requires an accurate knowledge and understanding of the legal formalities and obligations to be fulfilled both by the vendor and thebuyer. Only a registered Spanish Lawyer can guarantee proper and professional advice about the legal considerations to be taken into account. Once the decision to buy a certain property has been taken and the price has been agreed with the vendor, the wisest move is to instruct a local lawyer to start dealing with the legal issues involved. The main point at this stage is neither

to sign any document nor to pay any money or deposit before your lawyer provides you with their professional advice about the best way toproceed.First of all, your lawyer should furnish you with an approximate estimate of all costs and taxes involved in the purchase: Secondly, your lawyer should check the legal situation of the property in order to avoid any unpleasant surprises regarding mortgages, attachments or any other kinds of problem that could affect your ownership after completion.

Once confirmed that the property is free of encumbrances your lawyer will be in a position to draft a private “Option contract” between you and the vendor in which all the terms and conditions of the agreement can be ratified on paper. This document is of huge importance in securing a safe outcome for your interests as it is the contract with which both parties definitively state essential issues such as the price of the property, the payment conditions and the

prospective compensations to be awarded in case of breach of contract. The next step in the purchase procedure is to sign the Public Title Deeds at the Notary´s office. Your lawyer will provide the Public Notary with all the relevant information and documents required to draft the Title Deed. Finally, your lawyer should be able to undertake “after-completion” tasks on your behalf, such as payment of all relevant costs and taxes within the appropriate

legal term and subsequent Registration of your Title Deed at the local Land Registry in order to obtain full and public protection of your rights to ownership. In conclusion, our main duty is to be prudent and to avoid unnecessary risks when purchasing property in Spain. Correct professional advice provided by a duly registered Spanish Lawyer will guarantee a safe outcome for your investment and your only concern should be to simply enjoy your new home!

Topsy Turvy TimeA couple of weeks of

doubt and nerves has been knocking around the currency markets. Sterling to the Euro has seen a range of 1.19 to 1.216 and the euro to the dollar has seen the range move between 1.303 and 1.3388, so quite a bit of movement. I suspect for the short term the nerves will still be fraught.

Unemployment numbers in the Eurozone have shown once again how fragile the zone is, with Spain seeing an

increase on February’s numbers and now standing in excess of 22% and unfortunately with youth numbers increasing the pressure is certainly building on Spain, add this to the ever increasing problem with sale of government bonds and the Eurozone is still wobbling. The rest of the world does not believe Spain will recover alone; the feeling is that by now it should have asked for help from the ECB/IMF.

Recently 10 year bond markets in Spain rose to just

around 6% and this is considered the

danger zone, furthermore

there is a question a b o u t h o w m u c h w a s

purchased by central banks and not private investors. Speaking of central banks the Spanish one had to admit that in March it borrowed 228 bn euros against 152 bn in February, the question is, what are they doing with the money? What does seem clear is that investor money is going into Germany, considered to be a safer haven, albeit rates only pay 1.72%.

Additional problems for the poor old Eurozone comes from its PMI’s where both manufacturing and the service sector continue to struggle and the concern is that the stronger core countries may not be able to hold up the weaker ones.

Continuing the theme of conflicting information, its fair to say the UK is having its problems, manufacturing output fell to its lowest in 10 months, increasing mortgage costs yet reports suggesting house prices are on the

increase, really not sure how this happens!!!

To add to the confusion you have Standard and Poor, a credit rating agency, saying the UK should keep its AAA rating yet Moody’s and Fitch suggesting the outlook is negative, if you are not sufficiently confused read on...

Some good news however is that Nissan have announced they are to invest further in the UK so their are glimmers of a brighter future, also it seems that Mr Osbourne is feeling generous as the UK may have provided a further £10bn in assistance to the IMF bailout fund.

In the USA economic data continues in its nature to surprise, as figures for the US labour market disappoint and Mr Bernanke suggests that the Fed does not see the need for further quantitative easing. Strange isn’t it when your unemployment figures reduce it’s considered a

disappointment!So going forward we

are likely to see the focus on Spain and the Eurozone, when will Spain seek support or will it continue to trundle along until the gap gets too big, lets hope the Eurozone

finance ministers come to the fore.

The Advisors

There are various ways to watch UK TV in Gran Canaria, some free some not, some on your TV and some via the PC, Mac or smartphone. We will try to explain all the different methods, give you the best websites and show you the different costs.

I am 100% sure that people will know of better websites, cheaper services and other ways to watch TV so if you do please write to us at [email protected] and let us know and we’ll include new information in our next article

Contract SKY in Gran Canaria

As you are probably aware SKY is not legally available in Spain as the advertisers pay for a UK audience, however there are various companies that will install a dish and set you up. The costs for this are for the dish and sky box and your monthly subscription. There are 2 sizes of dish available, a smaller dish which will allow you to access all the standard SKY TV channels and a larger dish which will also give you access to terrestrial TV channels such as BBC and ITV too. The cost of the smaller dish and box is about 600€+ and your

monthly subscription about 50€ depending on which package you choose.

There are various individuals and companies that will install your dish and set you up. Have a look on the watch UK TV in Gran Canaria page on the grancanariaguru.com website for contact details as it changes regularly.

Watch TV on the InternetIf you google “watch

UK TV abroad” you’ll find a ton of websites that offer various services, I cannot vouch for many of them, but some of them do seem remarkably dodgy. One great site we have come across is filmon.com where you can watch most UK TV channels live on your computer, including BBC, ITV, Channel 4 etc. The quality is excellent and as far as we can see it is also legal.

If you have an iPhone or iPad you can also watch it via their app, and if you are extra geeky and have an apple TV (the little black box that sits next to your TV - €99) you can watch it on your TV as well just by pressing a button on your iPhone or iPad.

Download TV programsThere are obviously

hundreds of places to download films, music etc. totally illegally however the best one we have found is a UK based outfit called www.thebox.bz. They only have programmes shown on UK TV but the list is endless, they have all the

old classic comedies to the latest episode of The Voice, sports matches and documentaries. Download speed is superfast and programmes usually appear within a couple of hours of being on TV. The site is invite only though, however we have a few invites here at GranCanariaGuru so just drop us an email and we’ll send you one.

Watch BBC iPlayer, ITV player 4OD in GC

As you probably know you cannot watch the BBC iPlayer or listen to

certain sporting events in Spain, however there is a pretty simple workaround. Basically you have to subscribe to a VPN (virtual private network), change a couple of simple settings on your computer and the BBC think you’re in the UK. Once setup you can happily watch the iPlayer, the ITV equivalent, 4OD and any other content that is exclusively for UK customers. We find it particularly useful to watch sports events that are streamed on the BBC website, like the Six nations, Wimbledon, The Open etc.

There are various

companies which offer VPN services including lamnia, streamvia ... just google “get uk ip” and you can choose.

Watch SKY TV and UK sporting events online

There are various streaming services on the internet, all as good and as bad as each other. generally the quality is acceptable but not great however you can pretty much watch any sporting event or TV channel that you want.

The most popular streaming sites are www.fromsport.com

, www.iraqgoals.net , www.myp2p.eu but there are loads more - all showing equally illegal content.

As I said at the beginning, I am sure these are not the only ways to watch TV here so if you have any further knowledge please let us know and we’ll write an updated article in the next edition.

Obviously we do not condone any efforts to obtain UK TV content illegally and suggest you just turn the language of your digital TV to English and enjoy the Disney Channel here in Spain.

Pride Maspalomas

Well Gay Pride Maspalomas is literally a couple of weeks away. Just time for us to bring to your attention a few unusual pieces of information regarding the week long festivities.

The E-SENSUAL DANCE COMPANY, have become an integral part of Gay Pride. Their flair, skills and energy certainly add to the aesthetics of the shows and the events. This year the 36 member strong team,

are back to enthral and entertain. It’s not all crutch thrusting and shimmies, as the team prepares around 75 new routines. Why such a big team? Well, as Pride has grown, so has the quality of acts, and nearly all the acts

require dancers, the result being a large team is needed to perform each routine. Most dancers perform around 8 dances per show, all of which are created in the two week build-up.

Rather a hard task actually, but somewhere between the easy quartets and large full scale ensemble numbers, it all manages to get created. These youngsters certainly deserve praise, for they work voluntarily for the project, receiving a food bursary only, from private sponsorship. Flights, accommodation, costumes are all donated. Most days are gruelling 12hours of rehearsals, then it’s off out fundraising around the Yumbo centre. Maybe the unsung heroes of Pride… Under the Directorship of TJ English, the team has been selected from 3 auditions on the island as well as overseas and from show

reels, to ensure the right balance.

There are dancers, Acrobats, Models and Speciality Acts, from England, Wales, Ireland, Sweden, Poland, Germany, Belgium, Spain (Mainland) and the Canary Islands, a total ‘spice’ team. Dance Captain this year is the lovely Jay P, returning for his 4th Gay Pride Maspalomas. Asked what can we expect from the team this year, Jay P, replied “Feathers, lots of feathers, Fire, Zebras, Peacocks, Campness, Classical, Contemporary down the Street Level.”

Helping the performers out are a team of behind the scenes volunteers! Miss Abbi, aka Peter Foster, has made over 400 new costumes, all voluntarily, and they are looking fantastic. Working conditions, not short of a sweat shop, Miss Abbi, has cut, stitched and sequined her fingers away!

Backstage on the show nights will be Frederick Cleverly of Fredericks Hair Salon, together with his array of Redken product and make-up generously donated by Bazar Ani. Gabriel Croissier, the Designer, is also at hand to deliver a new range of swimwear, some of which is specially created just for Pride.

Now, if you want to get involved and get a chance to go on the stage, you can ! TT Fitness are hosting a Zumba week, during Pride, and throughout the week they are holding sessions on the Yumbo main stage, on Pink Night (Tuesday May 8th) and during the Dance Sessions. TT Fitness will also be the 2nd home for the dance team, generously giving the team use of their fitness centre during the two weeks of rehearsals! We are very grateful for this, and encourage everyone who can, to pop along for a

Writing is an excellent way of expressing your ideas, when learning a language it is a skill that must be learnt and a skill that some students find hard to master and some teachers forget to give it the importance it requires.

Dear Keith, I am preparing for the First Certificate exam and I am having lots of problems with my writing, how can I improve it? (Laura, Arucas)

Dear Laura,The best way to improve your writing is to increase your read-ing, the more you read the faster your writing will improve, it’s important to read different types of texts, many times reading novels is just not enough, you should try reading articles written on different topics (sport, fashion, music, cinema, medicine …). It is also important to practice your writing regularly (at least 2 pieces of writing a week).

Dear Keith, I am an English teacher in Santa Brigida, I want to teach my students how to write an article, could you please give me some ideas? (Maite, Santa Brigida)

Dear Maite,I found your question very interesting, it’s important that the English teachers try to get their students writing as it’s an essential part of language learning, and what’s more writing something different to an informal letter or story. Therefore I dedicated this edition’s article to how to write an article ef-ficiently. I hope this proves useful to you.

Dear Keith, I wish to improve my spoken English during the sum-mer, which would be the most efficient way? (Lydia, Maspalo-mas)

Dear Lydia,If you have the time I would recommend combining your summer holidays with an English course, taking a course in England with a family is an incredible way to improve your spoken English drastically at the same time as you learn the culture and enjoy a lovely holiday in England.

One important step in the learning of a language is to be able to efficiently write Factual Writing. Writing articles is an easy and fun way of practising writing; nevertheless quality is often lost because some simple rules are not followed.

What to do before writing your article.1. Choose a Topic

This is probably the most important decision you have to make, try and choose a topic which proves interesting as well as informative. Students are always recommended to choose a topic which personally interests them as this will make their work easier and they will get more involved in it’s development.2. Figure out who your audience is.

If you are writing about a scientific or technological topic decide what level audience

you are writing for, for example if you are writing an article on creating a Powerpoint presentation is your audience beginner, intermediate or advanced users.3. Do some research.

How well do you actually know the topic you are going to write about? Is it something you can write with no preparation or do you need to research some information from experts before writing it? 4. Article Length

This depends a lot on whether you have been given a number of words or are allowed to choose the length, if you have free will as to the length of your article you should begin by just writing it without worrying too much about it’s length, it’s more important to get your ideas flowing there is always time later to cut some out or even to split it up into two or more articles if you find it too long.

Take into account that it’s usually easier to write a short

500-word article rather than a 1000-word article, actually most article publishers prefer articles between 500 and 800 words as this proves to be a reasonably long enough article to get all points covered clearly.5. Compile a list of possible sources you could consult.

This can include books, documentaries, websites, encyclopaedias, and people to talk to. Remember there is a fine line between research and plagiarising which shouldn’t be crossed, other people’s work must be respected and if you wish to use their information ask for permission and don’t forget to credit where the work came from.

Now Create an Outline for your Article1. Title

Try and make your title as interesting and eye-catching as possible as most readers first read the title and then decide whether he/she will

continue reading the rest of the article.2. Introduction

Remember that you must introduce the topic giving background details to what your article is going to be about don’t try and write a very long introduction, usually one paragraph is sufficient.3. Body

Now here is were you can really show your ideas and your understanding of the language, try and be as creative as possible, don’t be repetitive with you expressions and structures and remember it’s essential to take into account who will be reading your article, write in a semi-formal way.4. Conclusion

No piece of writing is complete without a conclusion but it’s even more important in an article, here you should include a brief summary of your article and you should also try and get the reader involved in the topic, whether it’s taking some action (i.e. take recycling more seriously) or making the reader analyse if certain situations are being tackled correctly (i.e. is the government doing enough to promote recycling?).

Before publishing or handing in.

Many students tend to hand in their writing without giving it a second thought; this is a mistake which can be avoided very easily.1. Take a break.

Once you have written your initial draft give it a break, this could be a couple of hours or even a day or two. This will allow you to take a fresh look

If allowed it’s always a good idea to run your article through a spell checker before handing it in, then you should read through it a few times looking for spelling mistakes or grammar mistakes.

Check for faulty or inexact information; remember to double-check the facts. Make sure you haven’t included contradictory information. Eliminate anything that is just taking up space. Don’t fill your work with fluff, if you need to do some more research then go ahead and do it. It always works to read your article aloud to someone to make sure the text flows smoothly.

Twitters from the Atlantic

Barrie Mahoney was a teacher, head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands as a newspaper editor. He is still enjoying life in the sun as a writer and author.

I still enjoy reading and listening to UK news. However, I do find it irritating to hear economists and financial ‘experts’ (In the UK they are usually anti EU and anti Euro) including Portugal, Italy and Spain in any discussion about the Euro crisis and Greece. I hear Spain condemned in similar terms as Greece in the same breath, almost as if it is an extension of the same problem.

Most UK financial ‘experts’ appear to be anti European and certainly anti Euro, and the arrogance of the “we told you the Euro would be a disaster” brigade is breathtaking, particularly as many of us remember those very same pundits recommending the UK’s entry to the Eurozone some years ago. Yes, hindsight is indeed a wonderful thing.

Spain’s problems, and therefore the cure, are very different from those of Greece, as well as Italy, Ireland and Portugal. Spain has been an enthusiastic member of the European Union from its very beginning, and most Spanish people readily accept that the highly successful transition from the dictatorship of General Franco to a modern democratic state in a short period of time has been largely due to the support and encouragement from the EU, as well as the surprising, yet highly effective, unifying factor of a modern monarchy in the form of King Juan Carlos.

Most of the Eurozone’s problems relate to excessive borrowing by governments who were ineffective in managing their economies.

Greece, for instance, was unable to control its spending, and produced figures that were simply not true when applying to join the Eurozone. Portugal spent and borrowed too much. Italy also had too much debt stemming from overspending in the 1970s and 1980s.

Believe it or not, Spain has been a model European state, very similar in approach to Germany. Germany had wisely insisted upon including a ‘stability pact’, which was designed to ensure that governments inside the Eurozone would organise their finances sensibly. If a country wished to join the Eurozone, a condition of entry was that their debts should be no more than 60% of their GDP. However, this condition was quietly forgotten at the beginning, because Germany would not have qualified for entry to the Eurozone, because its debts were too high; this was the Eurozone’s first big mistake.

The stability pact itself was not implemented, because Germany broke the annual borrowing limit each year from 2002 to 2005. However, the Spanish government ran a balanced budget, with borrowing at zero every year until the 2008 financial crisis. Spain’s debt ratio fell and its economy grew rapidly, whilst Germany’s debt continued to rise. This was hardly a Greece scenario.

Spain now faces a difficult economic dilemma, because interest rates reduced to the lower levels operating in Germany when it joined the Eurozone. Although the Spanish government resisted the temptation of low interest loans, most ordinary Spanish people did not, and the country enjoyed a long economic boom, accompanied by a housing bubble, as Spanish families obtained larger mortgages, encouraged by some banks with less than rigorous lending policies; a problem that was also echoed in the UK. House prices increased by 44% between 2004 and 2008, yet now have fallen.

Spanish workers earned more and spent more during the years of growth, which

helped to increase the government’s finances from taxation, yet also helped to increase Spanish wages to uncompetitive levels, when compared with workers in Germany. Its construction sector, which became bloated during the building boom, also collapsed.

Currently, households are attempting to reduce their spending, as they struggle to repay their mortgages and financial debts. Unemployment has increased rapidly, with 50 per cent of under 25-year-olds currently out of work.

Surprisingly, unlike Greece, the Spanish government has relatively little debt, but now has to borrow to cover the shortfall left by a collapse in tax revenues and a rise in unemployment benefits during the downturn. Banks too are exposed to the collapse of the housing market due to their mortgage debts, which makes financial markets cautious about lending to Spain.

It is also well worth remembering that, unlike Greece, Spain is the EU’s fourth largest economy and the twelfth largest in the world. The country still maintains a large and strong industrial base; for example, it manufactures cars, heavy machinery, washing machines and refrigerators. Agricultural, fish and wine products continue to find a ready market within other countries of the EU, traditional links with South America, as well as newly established markets in China and India. Spain’s tourism industry continues to boom and is still the largest within the European Union.

Spain has much going for it, and it has very different issues, as well as possibilities, to those of Greece and other Eurozone economies. Wise economists, who have knowledge of the country, are slowly realising that Spain requires a different solution to its problems, and a gradual recognition that one size does not fit all. Spain can reform itself, but the support of its European partners is essential for it to succeed. The one common factor with Greece is that there is a limit to how much pain its people can take.

Last lesson, we looked at how to book your accommodation in Spanish. This time, I´m going to give you useful phrases you might need to get the most out of your stay.

More towels please!Necesito… [neh-seh-SEE-toh]; I needuna manta [MAN-tah], papel higiénico [pa-PEL ee-hee-YEN-eekoh], toallas de baño [toh-AY-yass deh BAN-yoh], toallas de piscina [pee-SEE-nah]In reply, you might hear: ¡Claro! or ¡Por supuesto! (of course!), and be asked: ¿Cuántos quiere usted? (how many do you want?) or perhaps: ¿Qué número es su habitación/apartamento? (what number is your room/apartment).To revise numbers, see les-son 21

Getting information‘Do you have’ is simply ¿tiene? [tee-YEN-eh] For example, ¿tiene un mapa? - d’you have a map? or per-haps ¿tiene información sobre las excursiones/sobre alquilar un coche? [SOH-breh AL-kee-lar oon COH-cheh] - Do you have info about excursions or about hiring a car? You´ll also want to know where things are: Dónde está la parada de taxis/de autobuses? (see part one last issue).

Would you mind...?The easiest way to ask someone a question is to start with: ¿Es posible ? [es poh-SEE-bleh]; ‘is it pos-sible...?’ followed by the full version of the verb you want, e.g: ¿Es posible…cambiar las sábanas/ limpiar la habitación/tener una lámpara? [cam-bee-YAR las SAH-banas/lim-pee-YAR la abee-tasee-YON/ten-AIR oona LAM-para]; is it possible to change the sheets/clean the room/have a lamp…prestar/me un secador (de pelo), una plancha, o un saca-corchos? [pres-TAR/MEH oon seh-ka-DOR deh PEH-lo, oona PLAN-cha o oon SAH-ka-KOR-choss] – to lend me a hairdryer, an iron or a cork-screw?…cambiar una bombilla? [bom-BEE-yah; lightbulb].In reply, you might hear: ahora mismo (right away), claro que sí (of course!) or lo siento, pero no (sorry but no). To say that something is broken, try: algo está roto [AL-goh es-TAH ROH-toh]

and ask: ¿Puede venir a la habitación? [PWEH-deh beh-NEER]; can you come to the room?Alternatively, you might need reception to call (llamar) a taxi, or a doctor (médico). An alternative to ‘es posible’ is ¿Puede…? [PWEH-deh] – Can you:¿Puede llamar/me un taxi? [ya-MAR meh oon taxi]¿Puede llamar a un médi-co? [ya-MAR a oon MEH-dee-koh]

We have a problemIf something doesn´t work, we say that it doesn´t function: no funciona. For example: El aire-acondicionado no funciona [el eye-YEAR-reh acon-deesee-on-AH-doh no foon-see-OH-na], or if there isn´t any hot water: no hay agua caliente [no EYE A-gwah calee-YEN-teh]. Another common complaint is too much noise, from traffic or other people: hay mucho ruido de tráfico/de otra gente [eye MOO-choh roo-EE-doh deh TRA-fee-koh/deh OH-trah HEN-teh]. You

could also say that it´s TOO noisy: es demasiado ruidoso [deh-mah-see-YADO roo-ee-DOH-soh]If you´re really unhappy with your room, you might want to change it: Quiero [kee-YAIR-roh] cambiar mi habitación . Perhaps to somewhere quieter or más tranquilo [tran-KEE-loh]

Making a complaintTo say you´re not happy with something, e.g. the service in the dining room or the clean-ing, try: No estoy contento/contenta* con el servicio en el comedor, o con la limp-ieza [no es-TOY con-TEN-toh con el sair-BEE-seeyo en el coh-meh-DOR, o con la lim-pee-YEH-sah]. The manager is el gerente [heh-REN-teh]

or la gerente if it´s a woman. So, quiero hablar con el ge-rente means ‘I want to speak with the manager’.*Estoy contento = I´m pleased/glad (when a man is speaking) but with adjectives, remember to change the ‘o’ to an ‘a’ if you´re a woman: no estoy contenta (I´m not pleased)

The final dayTo find out what time you have to vacate your room the last day, say: ¿A qué hora tengo que dejar libre la habitación? [a keh ora TEN-goh keh deh-HAR LEE-breh la abeet-a-see-YON] – lit: at what hour I have to leave free the room?In reply, you might hear: a las once/a las doce [ON-seh, DOH-seh] - at 11 or

12noon Then, to ask if they can keep suitcases at reception if you´re not leaving town right away, try: ¿podemos dejar las maletas aquí después de dejar la habitación? [poh-DEH-moss deh-HAR las mah-LEH-tass ak-EE desPWESS deh deh-HAR la a-bee-tah-see-YON]Finally, if you were happy with your stay, you could say: Gracias por todo. Vamos a recomendar este hotel a los amigos (thanks for every-thing. We´re going to reccom-mend this hotel to our friends).Ps: when you see ‘No mole-star’ on your ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign, that´s just what it means! To molest/abuse someone is ‘abusar’ – not to be con-fused…

The African continent vibrates with vivid and brilliant colours. To be part of the spring/summer 2012 tribal gathering think ethnic print, crochet knits, bead necklaces and bracelets for a mash-up of the ancient and the avant-garde. The trend is characterized by abstract designs, geometric patterns and earthy hues that this year get sprinkled with sequins for added glam and Technicolor bright accessories and prints that clash together for a bird of paradise effect that leaves all others in the dark.

Tips for Accessorizing the Tribal Trend If the rich patterns are too daring for your taste, wooden rings and colorful tribal-inspired jewelry are must-haves this season. Belts, purses and scarves in these on-trend prints will add a touch of glamour to your solid-colored outfits. Feathers continue to rule the fashion world in 2012. Earrings, necklaces, hair extensions and other feather accessories are perfect for this statement-making tribal trend. Having trouble coordinating colors? Tan and gold are two neutral colors that work well when embracing the tribal trend. Black and brown look amazing with wooden accessories, rich dessert hues and dramatic tribal prints. Wooden soled wedges, flats with tribal patterns or gladiator sandals will help you warm up to this exotic look.

So go on release your inner African queen and enjoy

this playful trend.

As you grow older, your skin loses its natural ability to resist the signs of ageing and other signs of environmental damage. Every day, your delicate skin comes into contact with pollution, dust, and UV rays which can make it appear dull and tired. These days it is not just possible but it is also affordable to help bring it back to life with a great range of available products to promote illuminated and flawless looking skin through a combination of appropriate skincare and flaw-hiding makeup techniques that can help you to show off a clearer, more even-toned and radiant look.

First start by applying a serum before you moisturise. Skin serums provide intensive care, treat specific problems or fragile areas and aim to penetrate deep into the three layers of the skin to strengthen the cells as well as deliver active ingredients where most needed. Although a moisturiser only helps with the superficial layers of the skin by retaining m o i s t u r e o n

its surface and preventing it from evaporating, a good face serum will actually help your moisturiser to penetrate much deeper and provide effective hydration. So, always allow time for your serum to be well absorbed into your skin. Two of my favourites are:

Kiehl’s Clearly Corrective™ DARK SPOT SOLUTION, a fast-acting serum that evens skin tone and diminishes dark spots to impart overall radiance and luminosity to the skin, after a few weeks of daily usage. It is available in Las Palmas at El Corte Inglés or through their website www.kiehl s.es

Estee Lauder’s Idealist, an even skin-tone illuminator which visibly reduces uneven skin-tone in two weeks, while anti-oxidants help prevent its re-appearance 30ml for €68 approx. at most beauty stores

To complete your look, after applying moisturiser continue with a good

foundation to mask visible imperfections, when applying this think of your face as a flower with your nose being the centre and each area surrounding a petal, forehead, each cheek and the chin start at the centre and move outwards towards the hairline focusing on areas that need more covering; a make up brush will help you achieve a more flawless look, a great one to try is Clinique’s even better make up. A dermatologist-developed liquid foundation that immediately brightens and evens out skin tones with naturally luminous minerals available from most beauty shops around the island from around €21

To finish your perfect skinned look, add a touch of bronze and blusher. Now you are ready to shine!

Till next time beauty lovers

Drilling for oil in Paradise? Is this some kind of perverted joke! If so, it is about as humor-ous as a turd in a punch bowl, and just as disgusting. The very idea – the audacity – of willingly polluting The Canary Islands for mere corporate profit and federal licensing and taxation underscores the pitiful shal-lowness, coarseness, greed and inhumanity of capitalism gone crazy. How far we have fallen! As poetess/singer Joni Mitchell intoned, “We have to get back to the Garden!” – nay, to save the Garden – our garden paradise. Is the vision of those in gov-ernment and economic power (those blighted few) so limited, so narrow, so uninformed, so myopic, so twisted as to au-thorise the desecration of this sacred archipelago and her holy waters. Our evolutionary bio-logical mother is The Blue Planet oceans; and there are no pris-tine, pure paradigms of paradise more perfect than Mama Atlan-tic at latitude 28N off the west coast of Africa. It would be less absurd to drill for oil in Paris (What is the Eif-

fel Tower really, any-how?); to drill away in Kensington or Hyde Parks, lush Lake Lochness, or the lovely Lake District; or how about a fancy side drill effort under Ma-drid’s incomparable El Prado? These locales are mere National Treasures. The Canary Islands are nothing short of Earthly Treasures – to be safeguarded for the sake of our human sisters and brothers (tourists), our and their progeny, and the preserva-tion of the biological wonders clinging to survival in one of the few marine underwater reserves on our planet. To despoil such a hallowed place would be akin to original sin. There are many gifts from na-ture that contribute to the Ca-nary Islands (Paradise on Earth): her superlatively fertile soils; her breathtaking, dazzlingly diverse geography; the most incredibly consistent temperate climate on The Blue Planet; her clean, clear air; her refreshing, cleans-ing breezes and winds; her lush

year round flora. Here exists beatitude of bounty bequeathed to those with the good fortune of birth or the luck of wanderlust. But of all myriad and marvellous charms of The Canaries, none compare with the wonders of her waters - the elixir of her el-

oquence, the most enchanted of her mysteries. It is water more than anything else – that makes Paradise unique and irreplace-able – worthy of protection from those who would defile her sub-lime seductiveness. One struggles to find sense in

the senselessness of the appalling deci-

sion to drill. Yes, the federal cof-

fers are low and unem-

ployment levels are

disastrous. Okay, drilling could create a new kind of employ-ment, new tax revenues, hide-ously high profits and obscene executive bonuses. But at what cost? Nothing less than the inevitable destruction of our non-renewable environment. Those few new drilling related jobs will be of little consequence to the potentially tens of thou-sands of jobs lost to a fast fading tourist industry. On a global level, the view isn’t much better. There is no longer a debate: Fossil fuels are non-renewable – as in finite – as in regardless of technology, in 50 to 100 years there will be no pe-troleum; no oil; no aceite; nada! Fortunately there are wonderful, utterly renewable energy alter-natives – many of which we are familiar (bio-fuels, sun, wind, waves, tides, currents, and elec-

tricity generated from renew-able energy sources) and many methods still to be discovered or improved upon. Citizens of The Blue Planet (the Homo sa-piens – or have we devolved to Homo economicus?) do seem to be making dawdling progress to-wards a clean, healthy, renewable oil substitute (no, not coal)! We all understand the global problems if humans continue to negatively impact our environment: Global Warming, The Greenhouse Affect; chronic and terminal diseases by way of air and water pollution; refugees in the millions or even billions by way of ice cap and gla-cier melting leading to dramati-cally rising sea levels; and a bit closer to home – sky-rocketing fuel prices.Take heart. We do not need to address the global issue. What we must do is look within – ex-amine this very local problem on a local, community level. Of course by doing so we will not only change our lives for the better, but provide a local exam-ple of possibilities for a globally traumatised population. What to do? What to do!

Go to www.cleanoceanproject.org and sign the petition saying

NO TO DRILLING FOR OIL IN PARADISE.

Write emails to your city, county, region, central government representatives in Spain, then the Spanish Supreme Court justices, then move on to the European Community and your country

The Perfect Wedding

The wedding guest list can become one of the biggest areas of stress for a bride and groom when planning their wedding.

It can also cause unnecessary friction between family and friends, causing upsets and strained relationships as a result.

Choosing your wedding guest list is something a wedding planner can’t do for you, although we can certainly offer you advice. Check out my tried and trusted survival tips that will help you come out of the whole process unscathed and with a smile on your face.

How do I cut my wedding guest list without feeling guilty?

Most of us would love to invite everyone we know to our wedding to share this joyous occasion with us. However for the majority of bride and grooms, this isn’t realistic.

How do you cut down your 200 wedding guest list into you 100 guest budget?

Firstly, sit together with your fiancé and organize your guests into 2 groups, the “Must haves” (group A), who are family and friends that must come to the wedding and the

remaining guests into “The not so must haves” (group B).

Begin to make your way through group B asking the following questions, ‘How close are we to this person?’ ‘When was the last time we saw them?’ and ‘Would their attendance to our wedding affect our enjoyment of our big day?’ Once you have honestly answered these questions, move onto the next area.

Maybe you could consider, making the wedding adults only, asking your parents to limit the amount of their personal invites (unless your parents are contributing to the bill), limit the amount of work colleagues or business associates you invite, and invite single people without a guest. Leave off distant relatives you can hardly ever see, the same should go for old school and university friends.

Also don’t feel pressured to invite people to your wedding because you were invited to theirs. They had their reasons and possibly the budget to be able to do that, you don’t.

How do I let people know children are not invited to the wedding?

Although some parents would jump at the chance of

having a day or evening out without the children, some might be offended or unable to attend without them. Understanding needs to be on both sides here.

It is also quite common for bride & grooms to only allow the children closely related to them to attend the wedding; if this is the case you must explain that to your other guests instead of saying no children are allowed.

Here are some methods you can use to transmit the right message effectively.

Tell your wedding party, parents, close family and friends what the situation is and ask them to spread the word.

Writing on the invite “adults only” is not an option, but stating clearly on the invite who is invited is. According to wedding etiquette, the names of the people on the invite are the only people invited to the occasion (i.e., Mr & Mrs John Smith).

If you state on the invite “Mr & Mrs John Smith and family” it generally means the children are invited too.

I would recommend however, that the name of each person be stated on the invitation individually, so

its meaning is not open to interpretation by the guest and will not encourage them to invite family members other than those stipulated.

In the event that you do have an RSVP for more than you invited, then it’s acceptable to make a polite call to them, explaining that the number of guests you invite is restricted due to budget constraints.

Try not to make exceptions. Other families will probably notice and might take offence.

Should I allow single friends to bring a guest or date?

Of course it is only polite to enable single people to bring a guest to your wedding so they don’t feel uncomfortable in the event they don’t know anybody. However, if your budget won’t permit this luxury you can take each situation on a case by case basis.

If any of your close family or friends are unmarried but in long term relationships, you might want to add their partner to the guest list.

You can then invite your single friends and explain your budget constraints to them - good friends will

understand. Equally, if the invite is declined due to the financial constraints of coming alone, and not sharing accommodation or transport costs etc, then you must also understand.

What if invited guests don’t RSVP?

Never assume guests are not coming if you don’t receive their RSVP. I know it can be a little time consuming for you, but call or drop them an email to double check.

It could be that the RSVP got lost in the post, or they thought they had replied but hadn’t. They may have even verbally confirmed their assistance with your fiancé or a family member who forgot to let you know.

It’s always better to be sure exactly who is turning up on your wedding day, than for people to turn up and face the embarrassment of not being catered for.

How far in advance should I send invites to guests?

The general rule is that invites should go out four to six weeks before the wedding. I however find this a little bit last minute for

people to prepare so I’m a big fan of sending out a “Save the Date” invites or email up to one year in advance, especially if you’re having a destination wedding or inviting guests from far away to your local wedding.

You want to make sure they don’t book anything else around that date which causes them to miss your wedding. So in addition, you can then send the invites out approximately 2 months before the actual wedding date.

Remember to be polite and understanding when transmitting any message that you feel might offend.

Also don’t forget that it is your wedding, so stand your ground on your decisions and don’t be swayed by difficult guests who try to persuade you otherwise.

Hopefully I’ve covered the main guest list issues you may have. If however, you want more advice or information on how to organize your guest list or any other aspect of your wedding don’t hesitate to contact me on the email or telephone number below.

Heart, Mind & Spirit

OK, so… by now if you’ve been reading these articles and choosing to put into practice some of the principals and ideas already presented then its likely that you may well have made certain changes in your life, which may have taken you quite some time to get around to, granting permission to yourself to actually put into practice. Those changes I

refer to are the ones which are very necessary for us to really grow, and yet may have seemed very difficult to make… or perhaps of course, maybe you haven’t… yet (and as I may have mentioned before, the word yet means You’re Eligible Too… this saying is one favoured by my martial arts teacher, for whom I am very thankful).

Let’s imagine that you

have made certain changes and feel that these are positive steps in the right direction. But what happens if you find yourself having a bad day? Maybe this has happened on occasion, possibly even recently, because let’s face it, from time to time we all have those days where we don’t get it right… where we sometimes get it very wrong indeed.

On such a day we may have found ourselves saying things which in hindsight we may not wish to have voiced in quite such a manner… maybe we have found ourselves behaving in ways about which we are not proud, nor happy… or maybe we’ve been feeling negative

about ourselves and maybe fallen short of the mark of progress which we have set for ourselves. When a person makes progress it can be the case that this leads to a self-congratulatory state, or that we somehow might feel superior to those people around us who we might deem to have not been making the progress that we believe they should have.

However, one person’s progress is unique to that individual, and who is to say that their progress has any less value than our own? It may be the case that progress is being made on the inside and not necessarily visibly to the outside onlooker, but interior progress, within oneself is

in many respects superior to apparent progress in the outer world. I see many people who come to me as clients for therapy, who may, to the outside world, appear to be making great progress or are seen as successful and yet on the inside have been anything but what they have portrayed to the outside world. I recommend that one should not judge another’s progress or lack of it by outer appearance, and certainly not make assumptions, nor accusations, towards another… for, you know what they say about assumption???

So, if you have found yourself not getting it right, then try this practical technique on for size… I

FORGIVE MYSELF.Forgiveness is Kindness

in action. IT’S OK for all of us to not Get It Right from time to time… to make mistakes is a wonderful part of human nature, and offers us an opportunity, if we choose to take it, to learn from our mistakes and to accept with humility and dignity that these errors can point the way towards real progress by understanding how not to be in the future… towards ourselves first and foremost, and then outwardly towards the people around us in our every day lives.

In the words of someone

very dear to me, “Don’t say sorry, make amends!”

Food for thought

BE AN ENCOURAGER... BE ENCOURAGED...

The world sometimes seems full of discouragers – negative, sarcastic, hyper-critical people - messengers of doom and gloom. But everyone on this planet needs to be encouraged at one time or another, do they not? So let’s bring on in place of the cynics and the sceptics ... ‘the encouragers’ – people with vision and strength, who are making an impact in their own lives and in the lives of their fellowmen; helping others to gain confidence by their kindness, love, words of praise and of course by example.

I have just read an inspiring story about a man called Barnabas. He was a first century Apostle, renamed because an old Jewish custom often gave people new names that reflected the most outstanding attributes in their character. Barnabas was a kind, generous and compassionate man, who sought out those in need of inspiration, delivering his own special brand of warm hearted encouragement wherever he travelled on his long missionary journeys. His very name means “Son of encouragement and comfort”.

Sometimes a smile and a hug is all it takes to make someone feel worthy or lovable. But many people today feel discouraged, cornered, unworthy, or completely overwhelmed by the circumstances of their lives. What a difference we can make if we practise honing up our ‘Barnabas skills’ - showing

that we believe for something better for those who find themselves disheartened - and without being patronising – wherever possible, helping them gain the confidence in making their own good choices to bring about change for the better in their lives.

So what does positive encouragement mean? Well

what it doesn’t mean is just patting people on the head and telling them they are doing OK or that the weather forecast is excellent for Arguinegin next week!

Rather it is giving good reasons for folk to feel better about themselves while being

gently supportive; by listening, by being a sounding board, or simply by affirming them - “You can do this”- as we offer to walk together every step of the way giving them all the benefit of ‘Barnabas-like’ comfort and encouragement en route.

Let me share perhaps the most poignant modern - day ‘Barnabas story’ I think I’ve

ever heard.Two men, both seriously

ill, occupied the same hospital room.

One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs. His bed was next to the only window.

The other man had to lie flat on his back. The men talked for hours on end.

They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their holidays etc; every afternoon, when the man in the bed by the window was allowed to sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he

could look out at.The listener began to live

for those special periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and colour of life outside.

The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake. Ducks and swans glided on the

water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm in the sunshine amidst flowers of every hue, and there was a fine view of the city skyline in the distance.

As the man by the window illustrated all this in exquisite detail, the man in the other bed would close

his eyes and imagine the scene. One warm afternoon, the window man described a parade passing by. Although the other man could not hear the band - he could see it vividly in his mind’s eye as the gentleman portrayed the scene with such vibrant and

descriptive imagery.Days, weeks and months

passed. One morning, the day nurse arrived with the customary bed baths for the two gents, only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window. He had died peacefully in his sleep during the night. As soon as it seemed appropriate, although the other man was extremely upset and very sad, he asked the nurse if his bed could be moved into the place next to the window. The nurse was happy to oblige, and after making him comfortable, left him alone. Straining painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take a look at the world outside. He slowly turned towards the window. It faced a totally blank brick wall. The astonished man asked the nurse whatever could have prompted his deceased friend to describe such wonderful things outside this window....and in such convincing word pictures.

The nurse responded that she just couldn’t understand it as the man was totally blind and could not even see the wall!

Then she smiled knowingly and said, ‘Perhaps he just wanted to encourage you.’

There is tremendous pleasure in making others happy despite our own situations isn’t there? Shared grief is half the sorrow, but when happiness is shared, joy is doubled...and those who encourage others will themselves find encouragement.

Present in all gyms in all sizes and colours, but why and how do fitness professionals use them?

Firstly the factual bit: using the Swiss Ball (SB) in your weekly workouts will use and focus on your CORE muscles. By ‘core’ we mean abdominal and back muscles. These muscles are often overlooked and so not strengthened which in turn can lead to injuries. So using a SB will work all the muscles used for stability and posture and also challenge your balance and coordination.

Exercises to TryBefore starting any of these exercises please make sure you warm up with a 5 min gentle jog or fast walk followed by some stretching.1)Back ExtensionWhen doing this exercise for the first time please use the wall to support your feet. As you become more confident move away from the wall! Position the ball under your hips with your knees straight or bent. With your finger tips behind your ears,

slowly roll down the ball. Lift your chest off the ball, bringing your shoulders up until your body is in a straight line. Make sure your body is in alignment and at all costs avoid hyper-extending the back. Aim : 12-16 reps, then repeat 3 times.Tip : I use this one as a basic foundation exercise as it focuses mainly on strengthening the lower back. This then prevents any injuries when we start using weights. 2) Ball BalancePosition the ball under your stomach and hips whilst keeping your hands on the floor. Slowly raise your legs until they are straight and off the floor. Hold that position, keeping your body in a straight line, abs pulled in. Once you are confident and can hold that position for 15 sec, slowly raise your right arm out to the side. Hold briefly, lower and repeat on the other side. Aim : 12-16 reps, on each side, then repeat 3 times.Tip : Keep breathing through your mouth – avoid holding your breath.3) Bottom Lift / Bridge

Lie on the ball with your head, neck and shoulders supported, knees bent. Squeeze your glutes to raise hips until your body is in a straight line like a bridge, hold for 5 seconds and lower. Aim : 12-16 reps, then repeat 3 times.Tip : Push through your heels rather than your toes i.e avoid lifting your heels.

Buying a SB

Very easy to get hold of one here. Sports Zone and Decathlon sell them and of course Amazon has a huge range. No need to buy the most expensive one and they start from only €12. Just make sure it is fully inflated – they should come with their own pump.Rough Guide to what size SB you should haveSo they’re cheap, challenging and available on the island, why not give one a go?!

Why is Iodine Important? When many of us think

about Iodine, we think about our thyroid. For sure, Iodine is important to the thyroid, but it is important to many other areas. It is found in high levels in the breast, stomach, ovaries, liver, lung, heart and adrenals and it would not be there unless it served a purpose!

Iodine in the Body Iodine is another essential

trace element. The adult human has between 20 and 50 mg of iodine in the body, and 60% of it is found in the thyroid gland. Our thyroid determines the metabolic rate of the body, the way in which we convert food into energy and the way in which that energy is used.

Thyroid hormones are vital for the development

of all organs, especially the brain, reproductive organs, bones, skin, hair, nails and teeth. Iodine also plays a role in the development of connective tissue. The thyroid is also involved in protein manufacture, cholesterol synthesis, and carbohydrate absorption.

Every cell in the body utilizes iodine in some form – either iodine or iodide. Iodine is regulated in many ways in the thyroid, using enzymes and hydrogen peroxide to cause an oxidation reaction. Selenium is required as part of this process to convert inactive T4 into active T3. For this reason, selenium is considered as important as iodine for the correction of thyroid function difficulties.

The recommended daily allowance for an adult is 140-150 mcg per day.

Supplementation Iodine deficiency was

considered rare in the western world. However, our increased exposure to bromine, fluorides and chlorine and consumption of soy based products is causing problems since these substances compete with iodine and inhibit the absorption of iodine in the body. Iodine supplements come in various forms ammonium iodide, calcium iodide, potassium iodide and kelp. In my view, kelp is the

best form of supplement since it contains so many other minerals that are important for us. I recommend Nutrigold (www.nutrigold.co.uk – use code CB111 for 20% discount).

Symptoms of Iodine DeficiencyIntakes of less than 50

mcg per day can lead to a deficiency. When the stores of iodine are depleted, the thyroid links to the pituitary gland to increase its activity and can become enlarged (goiter). Other symptoms may include fatigue, apathy, drowsiness, sensitivity to cold, lethargy, muscle weakness, weight gain and coarse skin

Food Rich in IodineGood sources of iodine

include vegetables grown in iodine rich soil, kelp, saltwater fish and seafood. Amongst fish, cod, kippers, mussels, mackerel, halibut, herring, tuna and cockles are particularly high, each offering significantly more than 50 mcg in an average size portion. It is also possible to purchase salt that has been supplemented with potassium iodide.

▶ Cloudy Saturday afternoon, Estadio de Gran Canaria with 10,862 spectators.▶ UDLP “Apparently” weake ned by the loss of Jonathan Viera through suspension and Vitolo who has had to pull out at the last minute with a heavy flu.▶ The side has been pretty well redesigned and see´s Portillo in the starting lineup for the first time in an age, he has never really had minutes to prove himself in this team, generally only getting 10 minutes per game as substitute.▶ Defensive error in the third minute gives a great chance to Recreativo, but Barbosa is

equal to it stretching well.▶ In the fifth minute Las Palmas have their first chance, a good run from Dani Castillo forces a corner but it comes to nothing. At 15 minutes it is obvious that Recre will provide a better spectacle than Numancia did last week, UD though do not seem to be daunted by the unavailability of their stars and appear to realise that they have players who can win this regardless.▶ Jose Artiles combines well on the right with Pignol, who is unlucky on the half hour having a shot pushed wide after finding space; from the resulting corner there is a handball in the

box and a penalty for Las Palmas. David Gonzalez steps up as he did last weekand sends the ball to the bottom right hand corner, as he did last week, but Recre keeper Manu gets down and keeps it out.▶ In a 44th minute corner for Las Palmas, Portillo is waiting but Herner gets in front of him and his header goes wide.▶ Second half and Juan Manuel will have to bring on Quiroga for a bit of decision in attack, but in place of who? The question is answered in the 52nd minute Dani Casellano comes off for Quiroga. 65th minute Quiroga

breaks down the left and

crosses low, the ball passes a yard in front of the goal but nobody makes contact.▶ Good cross from Javi Alamo for Recre in the 72nd, well intercepted by Barbosa, who gets down quickly to recover the loose ball. Ten minutes from time Quiroga gets a free header, palmed wide by Manu.▶ 93rd End of the game, very little to comment, Las Palmas were in need of inspiration and it never arrived, Huelva are a strong side but never really inspired either.▶ This game should serve as a good marker for next season, as it is expected that Jonathan Viera will be leaving for Granada in June, bringing

some much needed cash to the club(The transfer will cost Granada around 3 million euros) . As long as Vitolo stays injury free there is a fair chance that one of the bigger clubs will also move for him.▶ Next game away to Xerej, who are having a bad time of things at the moment, though Jonathan Viera will still be suspended, Las Palmas shouldn’t really have any problems but being that their position is secure they could lack incentive.▶ Next home game 29/4 against Huesca.

Estadio Chapin de Xerez, 5,000 spectators witnessed the worse display of the season from Las Palmas. Included in the package was an own goal and a red card.Jonathan Viera was suspended but neither Vitolo nor Momo were able to produce any of the magic that we have seen earlier in the season, it could be that seeing that their position in the second division is pretty well assured and the first division a near impossible dream that there is a lack of incentive. Juan Manuel tried to inject some life, making 3 changes at the same ti me with 10 minutes to go but it was all too little too late with even Pignol having an off day which the Xerez attack took advantage of by attacking down the right continuously.A performance better forgotten than dwelled upon. Next week UD return to the Estadio Gran Canaria against a much improved Huesca, who convincingly beat Las Palmas when they met earlier in the season and when Huesca were at the bottom of the league, they are now in 17th position so still not out of the water and Las Palmas are 11th, let’s hope that they pull their socks up.

TARA

TARA Animal Respect Association Rescuing, Rehabilitating, and Rehoming Pets in Gran CanariaTARA.TheCanaryNews.com Facebook TARA or [email protected]

TARA Animal Charity Shops, Flea Markets, Events, Pet Foster Homes & Adoptions(34) 928 062 891

Together We Can Make Gran Canaria A Paradise For Animals Too!

Who or what is TARA? Is she a benevolent benefactor of an animal welfare group? Or perhaps she is a cat or dog whose touching story motivated animal advocates to form a local group to aid animals in need? Or is TARA the given name of a woman inspired to rise up against animal cruelty and found an animal respect organisation?

The word “tara” (along with its variations and derivatives) has found a home in many languages and mythologies. Tara is the name of the southern USA plantation in the famed Margaret Mitchell civil war novel and hugely popular movie Gone With The Wind. (Note: There was a stateside uproar in the 30s when very British Vivian Leigh was cast in the coveted role of American

heroine Scarlet O’Hara. This was a prelude to the rumblings and grumblings 75 years later when American Meryl Streep took on the role of British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady. Ironically, both Leigh and Streep won an Oscar for Best Actress. As the world turns it doesn’t always move.)

Regardless of when or where “tara” has been embraced, fecundity and life seem to be present. Tara is the name and symbol of several goddesses in disparate civilizations including Nordic, Old Europe, India, China, and North American Indian tribes. Tara is also the name in several countries of Latin origin for earth or soil. In Gran Canaria Tara is the Neolithic symbol of nature.

Discovered by archaeologists on Gran Canaria in the early 1900s, the clay figure is clearly

female and deemed to be perhaps 500 years old, though reminiscent in configuration in Mediterranean cultures more than 5000 years old. Sadly most of the Gran Canaria indigenous peoples’ culture has been erased (as conquerors have obliterated countless cultures throughout the ages). One thing is clear: for 1500 years on Gran Canaria the fabulous climate, richness of soil and the abundance of marine life held significant sway in religious rights and rituals. Experts are nearly unanimous in their conclusion that the Tara idol represents a symbol of the islanders’ respect and devotion to nature and her opulent abundance of their homeland.

Some 5 centuries after Tara was moulded and baked, along came Muriel Alberta Mae, a founder and the president of our own TARA

Animal Respect Association. Upon pondering a name for her Spanish-registered animal charity, Muriel enjoyed the global synergism between respect for nature wedded to the singularly local aspect of reverence for nature - embodied in the Gran Canarian icon.

So there we have it: Tara Animal Respect Association – TARA. Ergo, the who and what of TARA: a charitable association of animal advocates as embodied in the ancient Gran Canarian symbol for respect of nature, Tara.

If you or someone you know might be interested in partnering with friends and supporters of TARA, learn more about membership and volunteer work at the contact details in this column. Supporters receive many benefits, not the least of

which is the opportunity to help TARA help abandoned and abused animals.

The satisfying story of the why and how of TARA will be addressed in The Canary

News in future issues. For the moment let us embrace this thought: TARA consists of good people doing good work to preserve and protect nature in Paradise.

Together We Can Make Gran Canaria A Paradise For Animals Too!Together We Can Make Gran Canaria A Paradise For Animals Too!Together We Can Make Gran Canaria A Paradise For Animals Too!

The Mystery of

TARA Animal Respect Association weighs in strongly against the push to explore for oil in our precious paradise. Over and above considerations for safeguarding our crucial tourist industry, The Canaries are one of the im-

portant havens for sub-tropical marine life left in the world. It doesn’t take an engineer to understand that all offshore oil wells pollute – malignant seepage of oil, chemicals, and gases into our clean waters and skies on a daily basis. Claims of low to no risk deep offshore drilling are false. The pollution factor is overwhelming even without catastrophic disasters of the magnitude experienced in the Gulf of Mexico and the North Sea just this

past year. TARA speaks out in support of our unique nature reserve and calls on our legislators not to cave in to corporate greed couched in a need to feed our insatiable reliance on non-renewable, polluting energy sources.

Men trots många spekulationer

Långbollarna dominerade men fann sällan sitt mål.

Mi marido quiere ir a la montaña a esquiar, pero creo que debemos visitar a mis padres en Málaga - Min man vill åka skidor i bergen, men jag tror att vi bör besöka mina föräldrar i Málaga.

En riktig feel-good roman.
