The stage crew of nine students, led by Stage Manager Adrian Di Salle from Year 12, and assisted by Mr Richard O’Shaughnessy, enabled theproduction to run with great professionalism as the stage was transformed into the various aspects of an ocean liner. The responsibility that thesestudents carried did them great credit. Declan Jackson (Year 10) joined staff and instrumental teachers in providing the orchestra for the production.

A production of the size and quality of Anything Goes calls on the generosity of many, not the least that of the families of those involved. For the castand crew the production undoubtedly demanded much commitment and time and this carried some pressures to balance time and otherinvolvements. There are, however, a number of significant values for a school in supporting such productions. There is a unique experience of workingtogether with students from across different year levels, with teachers and with professionals in the field, to produce a performance of quality. Aboveall there is the opportunity for both participant and spectator to rejoice in the creativity and energy of cast and crew in expressing themselves andputting on a show that brings entertainment, laughter and enjoyment.

Music has an intrinsic place in our school tradition and musicals, going back to the Gilbert and Sullivan productions that were for a long time a featureof music at Xavier. There is remarkable diversity as well as quality in our music program and Anything Goes was a reminder of both. It is perhaps alsoworth reminding ourselves that modern music in all its forms owes much to the Christian church and to the value the Church has placed on musicthroughout its history. I remember seeing in Siena cathedral in Italy the oldest extant musical score – it was music written for worship. It is hard toimagine the great classical composers without the great religious music that expressed their creativity (and churches were often the main homes oftheir performances). Nor is it possible to write the history of rock and roll or jazz or the blues without examining the great impact of gospel music onthese genres. Churches and cathedrals have traditionally not only been places of prayer and worship; they have been places of human creativityexpressed in art, sculpture, architecture, music and so on. In Boston on New Year’s Eve, many of the city’s churches host free concerts of classical, jazz, folk, and contemporary music. The Catholic Church at its best has always embraced the arts and particularly music.

Within the Church, the Jesuits have enthusiastically promoted and made use of the arts. Jesuit schools in the Sixteenth Century pioneered the idea ofschools as places of the imagination and of the senses, in which the arts would be an integral part of a student’s education. Musicals, dramas, plays, all had their place in our schools. Artists (Rubens, Bernini, Vermeer), musicians (Palestrina), writers (Moliere, Racine), film makers (Hitchcock), allenjoyed the associations of Jesuit education and spirituality. The first school of music in the Western Hemisphere was the Jesuit school in Sao Vincentein 1553. Mozart composed an opera for the Jesuit college in Salzburg. The Jesuit composer Zipoli wrote music for the Indians of the Jesuit missions ofParaguay that only in recent years has gained international recognition. The history of ballet, theatre, music, stage production and opera, all recordcontributions by Jesuit schools, a living tradition that reaches to our day. Our own musical endeavours here at Xavier belong to this rich tradition. Itonce focused on Gilbert and Sullivan operas, but since the 1990s a much greater diversity of annual productions have been mounted. This tradition ofmusic and musicals both reflect our commitment to education as the formation of the whole person and a spirituality that values the humanimagination and creativity as gifts from God.

Combined Xavier/Genazzano School Musical – “Anything Goes”.

The students and staff of both great schools have combined in an extraordinary display of talent, exuberance and sheer joy to entertain the audiencesin the EHPAC in five performances last week. As I sat and watched I thought what a wonderful opportunity it is for our students to partake in such aprofessionally directed and produced musical. I saw in the eyes of those young performers the delight in being able to give of their best. Well done toall associated with this terrific performance. Our staff have provided the stage for our students to truly show their talent and to be able to shine!

What does Leadership mean to you?

Last week I had the opportunity with Ms Kathleen Upfold (Director of Kostka Hall) to visit a Year Four class at Kostka which was engaged in a unit ofinquiry focused on Leadership. I was very impressed to see the research that they had already undertaken on such significant and heroic people suchas Martin Luther King Jr, Nelson Mandela, Gandhi and Jesus. The students had invited me to answer some of their questions concerning myunderstanding of leadership. One of the students posed a question of who were my role models among the current leaders in our country. My thoughtsimmediately turned not to famous people but to my own parents and how they chose to live their lives. Their characteristics of generosity, welcoming, listening, love, respect, having high standards and noble goals readily came to mind. I think they instilled in me and my siblings a belief that allpeople matter and, regardless of any title or position, everyone deserves not just acceptance but welcome and respect. It also gave me theopportunity to look into the eyes of all those students and say, “You can all be leaders in your own way; what counts most is how you act and what isdriving your actions.” We are very fortunate at Xavier where our DNA is inviting us to serve.

Xavier Promotion

Many parents have commented to me about our current promotion on the radio and in print media. The intention is to celebrate all that is good withinour school community. In recent years, Xavier has been subjected to attention when some of our students have made poor choices. We havedeliberately chosen to highlight the vast majority of students who do the right thing all of the time and who are true people for others.

Blessings and peace for the coming week.

Director of Kostka HallDear Parents and Guardians

At our first full campus assembly last week I spoke with the students about our College Theme – Forming Ourselves, Transforming Our World. It is acourageous and ambitious theme. I reiterated with our students that a Jesuit Education speaks of the formation of a well-rounded person ofcompetence, conscience and compassion. Our College vision aspires to set hearts on fire by an educational commitment to a faith that does justice. Our guiding principles focus on:

education and development of the whole personformation of men and women of faith to work for justice in the worldpursuit of excellence in humanitydiscernment and wisdomcritical engagement with the worldstriving for the Magis – a Latin term meaning aspiring for the greater depth.

As educators, I explained these principles guide us in all our work and interactions with children from 3 Year Old Kindergarten to Year 12.

I also spoke of the theme as I did with our families at the information night at the opening of the academic year. I explained that there are challengesin our world – racism, sexism, terrorism, narcissism – to name a few. Whilst we do not ignore these challenges, a Jesuit Education has a positive worldview. Changing the world happens when we change ourselves – as Gandhi reminds us – “Be the change you want to see in the world” and morerecently Barack Obama: “The best way to not feel hopeless is to get up and do something. Don’t wait for good things to happen to you. If you go outand make some good things happen, you will fill the world with hope, you will fill yourself with hope.”

Indeed Pope Francis speaks of transformation and hope when he says:

“Now is the time for courageous actions and strategies, aimed at implementing a culture of care and an integrated approach to combating poverty, restoring dignity to the excluded, and at the same time protecting nature. We have the freedom needed to limit and direct technology, to deviseintelligent ways of developing and limiting our power, and to put technology at the service of another type of progress, one which is healthier, morehuman, more social, more integral.”

Our College Theme dovetails with the Catholic Church’s Year of Mercy – a year of focus on fidelity and compassion.

In the last few weeks in our Religious Education classes and Homeroom students have been focussing on the College Theme – Forming Ourselves,Transforming Our World as well as focussing on the Church’s Year of Mercy. Some students have made a contribution to the Catholic Aid Agency –CARITAS through Project Compassion. In class they will have viewed some CARITAS videos that have showed their small contribution of loose changecan transform the world for someone. If you are interested in watching some short clips about how the money from Project Compassion is used totransform the world please click here.

In my Year 7 Religious Education class we have been talking about how we can form ourselves and transform our world here at Kostka Hall. We spokeabout kindness. We do see so much kindness here at Kostka in the yard and classrooms with our students, with our staff and with our parents. Many ofthe students in my class could cite examples of where they have seen this occur. I asked the students to imagine what our campus would be like if ourdefault way of behaving was kindness – especially when we are sad, angry, disappointed or frustrated. We could amplify all the kindness that is hereat Kostka. You may like to reinforce this with your children at home. In addressing our students on the College Theme, Father Chris Middleton SJquoted the great Canadian writer and Nobel prize winner, Alice Munroe who said: “There are no such things as big and little subjects, the major things, the evils that exist in the world have a direct relationship to the evil that exists around a dining room table when people are doing things to eachother.”

Respectful relationships, kindness, peace in the world - many of these things are taught and learned at schools but our family life and the relationshipswe form in our family have the greatest contribution to our formation as individuals and citizens.

Please click here to view the clip I showed to the students about the impact of kindness. You may like to watch this as a family.

I would encourage you to attend the Xavier College inaugural celebration of International Women’s Day on Tuesday 8 March for a special breakfast inthe Great Hall at the Senior Campus with our guest speaker Prue Gilbert, CEO and co-founder of Grace Papers, a social change business driving genderequality.

We wish all our Year 5’s the best as they come to the end of their first Middle Years Camp. All the best to our Year 7’s who head off on camp next week.

Sursum Corda.

Faith & ServiceFaith & Service

Faith & Service NewsYear 8 Leaders CampAs part of the leadership formation program on offer at Kostka Hall, the elected Year 8 Leaders attended an overnight camp at the Jesuit retreat housein Anglesea.

One of the aims of the program is to introduce our leaders to some of the concepts and issues involved in being a positive role model and leader atKostka Hall. The aim of the activities undertaken are to provide the students with opportunities to develop leadership skills whilst engendering a senseof community, cooperation and trust amongst the group. A series of leadership discussion workshops took place over the two days. One particularfocus of the Leadership Forum was the discussion on the qualities of a person in an Ignatian community. This generated much dialogue andconversation amongst the students. Student reflections follow:

I thought that this camp represented our College theme ‘Forming Ourselves, Transforming Our World’ because the camp made us work as one andmake a strong connection among us all. Instead of the whole group being focussed on one task and making little progress, assign different groups todo different tasks. This makes it an easier task to complete. By doing this shows that the little things you can change as a group can make a bigimpact on your overall result. Josh Keeble

The reflection time and the initiative activities gave me a real insight about other people and how they work as leaders. Tom Dunne

What I learnt on leadership camp about our school motto is that in order to change the world, you must first change yourself and make sure you are agreat role model. James Norbury

For me, camp was a fantastic experience and was a real eye-opener about my peers, my friends and leadership! Liam Coysh

The College Executive in consultation with teachers of Religious Education will undertake a review of Religious Education at the College. An excerptfrom the terms of reference:

In accordance with the Ignatian principles of consideration of context, experience, reflection and action, a review is to be undertaken of theReligious Education Faculty. The focus of this review concerns Religious Education curriculum and Personal Development. Such a process waslast undertaken as part of the CIS/JSB review in 2011 led by a subcommittee led by Professor Marie Emmitt.

Dr Chris Hayes has invited Dr Peta Goldburg, rsm, from ACU (Brisbane campus) to facilitate the review process. Dr Goldburg is Professor ofReligious Education at Australian Catholic University, and has over thirty years of experience as a primary, secondary and tertiary educator.Widely published, she is the national president of the Australian Association for Religious Education and has twice chaired the writing of theStudy of Religion Syllabus for senior secondary students in Queensland. Our context is ‘To Know, Worship and Love’ texts, as this is theReligious Education syllabus outlined by the Archdiocese of Melbourne.

The purpose of the Review is to ensure that the Religious Education Faculty, in the context of a Jesuit school, is meeting its aspirational outcomes inthe face of the changing world, changing cultural identity of Catholic schools, diversity of religious backgrounds and the experiences of students inCatholic schools.

As part of that Review, we will survey a randomly selected group of parents across the College. If you are selected you will receive an invitation viaemail. In addition there will be a parent focus group who will meet with Dr Goldburg in mid-April to discuss Religious Education at the College.

Middle Years NewsThe past fortnight has again been a vibrant and busy one. A wide range of valuable activities and events have occurred. The Year 8 Student Leadersattended their Leadership retreat and camp at Anglesea. This proved to be a valuable exercise and very worthwhile. I was particularly impressed withthe openness with which the Student Leaders approached their shared experiences. We also saw much fun and good humour as the boys participatedin paddle boarding and raft building sessions.

Working together to build our Ark.

Tired, cold but still focussed.

Our Year 5 and 7 students participated in the swimming program under the guidance of the Physical Education Faculty and I thank Mr Shinners for hiscoordination of this program.

On Wednesday 17 February many staff and parents attended the cyber safety presentation organised by Mr Parker. This offered valuable advice andinsights into how we can, as adults, be more aware of the pitfalls in the cyber world and also provided some useful strategies if faced with cyber basedissues at home.

Our Year 5s and 7 boys are preparing for the annual Outdoor Education Program at Cave Hill Creek and Merricks respectively. Mr Henderson, Directorof Outdoor Education has addressed both groups and he has been liaising closely with Mr Armstrong to ensure that the camps run smoothly and thatthe boys have the best possible experience.

Our Year 5 students visited Burke Hall and the Senior Campus as part of the I am a Xaverian unit of study. This visit to the other campuses of XavierCollege reinforces the links between the students at Kostka Hall and the College. Our new Year 7 students also visited the Senior Campus and BurkeHall as part of their transition process. I thank Ms Roso and Mr Gaudie for arranging this excursion.

In what is undoubtedly a short term, we are fast approaching the Learning Progress discussion in Weeks 8 and 9. I urge all students to dedicatethemselves to their tasks in the interim and to make a particular effort to ensure that their approach is organised and focussed.

On another matter, it has been noted that at times some students walk about between classes or on buses or trains or in the yard at break times withan ICT device open and in use. I have advised strongly against this. I have pointed out that any damage incurred outside the supervised teachingtimes could well result in parents needing to repair the device without resorting to the insurance cover as it may not cover such a circumstance. Iwould ask all parents to reinforce this message at home in order to avoid any difficulties or unfortunate accidents.

In a similar vein, I also urge the students to adopt the best possible behaviours when using public transport to and from school. The vast majority ofthe students adhere to the College expectations and standards in this matter, however, we must be ever vigilant and set high standards when wewear the school uniform in public.

I also remind all students and parents about the protocols of mobile phone usage at school. Students are permitted to bring mobile phones to school;however, each boy should place his phone in his locker during the course of the day and only access it at the conclusion of the day. If he needs tocontact home urgently staff will facilitate his request and make a phone available to him. I also remind parents not to message children at school andexpect a reply, contacting the front office is open to parents in any urgent matter.

As ever, I exhort all boys to read each night for pleasure, to visit the Bellarmine Library regularly and to make use of the wonderful books andresources we have at our disposal.

I look forward to another vibrant and exciting fortnight at Kostka Hall.

eLearning NewsAt Xavier College, we take the education and safety of your children very seriously. Our implementation of a 1 to 1 program in the Middle Years andthe provision of devices for our Early Years students is done in the belief that eLearning is an effective and contemporary means to deliver qualityeducation. An important part of 21st century learning and being a 21st century child, is developing the skills and traits of a digital citizen. Thisincludes the skills to learn and also the skills to be safe and secure while online.

Recently, we held the ThinkuKnow parent session which gave us a chance to continue the education process within our Xavier community. Thisevening forms part of our approach to keeping our students and families safe online.

Within the Middle Years, the Year 5 boys will soon take part in a course using the Commonsense Media Digital Passport Tools via their iPad’s, our Year 6boys complete the Digital Licence through the Alannah and Madeleine Foundation’s Esmart Schools’ Program and all Year 7’s and 8’s have recentlyhad a presentation from the Optus Digital Thumbprint program. This ongoing digital education of your children is something we take seriously and webelieve that it is greatly strengthened by a close connection between the message offered at school and at home.

I encourage you to engage in frequent dialogue with you child on the issues surrounding digital citizenship and also encourage you to raise with usany concerns or questions you might have.

ThinkuKnowOn Wednesday 18 February we welcomed Graham Higgerson from Neighbourhood Watch (a partner organisation to ThinkuKnow) and federal agentKate Fitzpatrick from the Australian Federal Police, to Xavier College Kostka Hall. They presented on a variety of issues around online safety and usedcase studies to illustrate some of the complex issues around criminal law and the use of technology. They both highlighted the need to separatetechnology from being the cause of a problem and instead focussing on the fact that social issues and the need to learn social navigation have alwaysexisted. We need to educate our children how to navigate a life integrating technology, rather than because of technology.

Digital ThumbprintWe recently welcomed Optus’ free digital education program, Digital Thumbprint to deliver their workshops to our Year 7 and 8 students. Delivered inclass to students by our facilitator Dom, the program’s fun and interactive workshops are tailored to the needs of specific year groups. Designed toempower and inform, the workshops taught students the advantages of having a positive online presence and armed them with the vital informationthey need to stay safe online.

Overall, the program proved to be a highly beneficial experience for students and was thoroughly enjoyed by all. For more information on the programand each of the workshops please click here.

Sport NewsYear 8 Australian Rules Football MergerThe Year 8 Australian Rules football programs at both Burke Hall and Kostka Hall will merge this winter season. Ninety-two Year 8 students across thetwo campuses have been selected to play AFL. Four teams have been entered into APS competition in the following divisions: A1, A2, B2, C1.Thursday training sessions will be primarily conducted at the Senior Campus in order that students train together. It is exciting that Xavier CollegeYear 8 football has teams in four divisions where students can play at a level commensurate with their current abilities.

There are a number of reasons why the merger has eventuated. Primarily, students from both campuses will come together in large numbers todevelop relationships and work collaboratively through the medium of Australian Rules football. This is seen as an enormous benefit to assist studentsin the transition to the Senior Campus in Year 9, when they will be playing in the same sporting teams for the remainder of their Xavier College years.

Australian Rules football will be the eleventh sport in which Burke Hall and Kostka Hall students play in the same teams (at specific year levels). It ishoped that more sports will experience a merger of this kind in the near future, if the logistics prove achievable.

Publications NewsLast Thursday and Friday the leaders attended the Leadership Camp in which we learnt about the College theme ‘Transforming Ourselves,Transforming Our World’ and how we can implement it in our leadership roles.

The ‘Transforming Ourselves, Transforming Our World’ message is if we can educate ourselves we can then transform the world around us at a locallevel. Whether that means running a stall at the Mini Maytime Fair or even just helping another student find their way to class.

The day started off with a bus ride to Anglesea with our first port of call the Jesuit Retreat House in which we would be staying overnight. Our firstactivity was stand up paddle boarding; we learnt a lot about each other in this exercise and grew in confidence while out on the water.

That night in the Jesuit Retreat House we gathered in the reflection room for an honest and open forum in which we discussed leadership hosted by MrJones. The reflection room was high on a hill with 270-degree views of Anglesea and Jesuits could come here to escape the external world and reflect. We each brought our own item that we believed represented leadership. We all had different opinions and views with many creative objects beingbrought in. The forum brought all of the leader’s ideas, opinions and beliefs together of what it means to be a leader. Some of the key qualities in aleader we identified were reliability, courage, respect, responsibility, sense of humour and perseverance. What we learnt from the forum transformedourselves, now we can transform Kostka Hall as leaders of the campus.

The following morning we implemented the leadership skills we learnt the past day in group activities, we gradually fine-tuned our leadership skillsthroughout the morning by engaging in a raft building task.

Thank you to Ms Upfold, Mr Jones, Mr Mulcahy and Mr Gaudie for making the Leadership Camp possible.

Taking to the water. Is she seaworthy?

Interview with Miss Dillon and Darcy Kelly, Publications Captain

Darcy Kelly: What class do you teach?Miss Dillon: Year 5 Arrupe.

DK: What school did you teach at before coming to Kostka?Miss Dillon: I have taught either Year 5 or Year 6 at Xavier College Burke Hall since 2007. The first group of Year 5’s that I taught are now 20 years old!

DK: What is your educational background?Miss Dillon: I have a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Teaching from the University of Melbourne. I also completed Postgraduate studies in LearningDifficulties also at the University of Melbourne. I really like learning about how to help children read and spell.

DK: We all know that Leaders are readers what are some of the books you have enjoyed reading?Miss Dillon: Anything by Jane Austen or Roald Dahl but at the moment I am reading a lot of picture story books by Pamela Allen to my two children.

DK: What sports have you played?Miss Dillon: When I was younger a played a lot of sport. I really enjoyed doing athletics and netball in particular. I played netball at quite a high leveland I pretty much lived and breathed the game for a huge part of my life. These days I try and keep fit by cycling, going for long walks or running.

DK: What AFL team do you support? Favourite player, coach, best game you have seen?Miss Dillon: I barrack for Collingwood Magpies and my favourite all time player is Nathan Buckley. My favourite current player is Jaimie Elliot. The bestgame that I have seen is of course the replay of the 2010 GF where Collingwood won their first premiership in 20 years. I was at this game and satwith the cheer squad behind the goals. I grew up in Sydney, NSW so I also have a NRL team - the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

DK: What are some of your hobbies?Miss Dillon: I live in Bayside and I like being able to access Port Phillip Bay with my two sons. I like shopping, drinking coffee and baking when I havethe time.

DK: What in your opinion has been your greatest achievement?Miss Dillon: Besides having my two children, I was really happy that I was able to travel the world earlier on in my teaching career. I taught in schoolsall over London but also managed to see a lot of Europe during my time overseas.

DK: What are your favourite subjects to teach?Miss Dillon: I really love teaching English and Spelling as much as l like teaching Maths.

DK: What are your impressions of KH in your first few weeks?Miss Dillon: I am loving being a part of a welcoming community and have really enjoyed getting to know all of the Year 5 students and teachers. I amfinding it a lot easier to get to know everyone as there are much less students here than Burke Hall. The students have a lot more space to play hereand I am enjoying teaching in such spacious classrooms in such a beautiful environment.

Xavier Social Justice NetworkSaint Ignatius of Loyola described the ideal Jesuit as “living with one foot raised” – always ready to respond to emerging opportunities. The XavierSocial Justice Network offers opportunities, both in volunteering and advocacy, for you to get involved. Are we ready to transform words into action by‘Stepping Through the Door’?

It has been a very busy start to the year for the Xavier Social Justice Network (XSJN) with parent information sessions, training of new XSJN committeemembers and representatives in parent associations whilst also trying to remain active in our advocacy. It is with great joy that we welcome our sixtynew members to the Network. The XSJN has grown to five hundred and forty five members. We currently have one hundred and eighty five memberswho are active volunteers working in fourteen different programs. This number is set to grow once we have placed all of our new members.

“Stepping through the door”

Xavier Social Justice Network theme 2016

Many of you will be aware that Pope Francis has called an extraordinary Jubilee. The Jubilee theme is ‘Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful’. It isa rare and important event in the Catholic tradition. The Holy Year runs from 8 December 2015 to 20 November 2016. During a Jubilee year a holydoor at St Peter’s Basilica is left open. Pope Francis describes it as ‘a door through which anyone who enters will experience the love of God whoconsoles, pardons and instils hope.’ The XSJN would like to incorporate this image of ‘Stepping through the Door’ with the 2016 Xavier College theme,‘Forming Ourselves, Transforming our World’.

We encourage each of you to think about:

What is the ‘cost’ for you to commit to social justice? What barriers stop you from stepping through that door to help others and to stand up for your beliefs? What would enable you to move beyond holding sympathies and to act by ‘stepping through the door’?What act are you called to do, hence which door should you step through?

Key people in XSJN for 2016

We would like to introduce some of the key people who volunteer their time to support and promote the work of XSJN within the 3 campus parents’associations.

Current Volunteering Opportunities

2016 has been proclaimed by Pope Francis as a Year of Mercy. We are called to show mercy to others as we would expect mercy to be shown to us. “Alittle bit of mercy makes the world less cold and more just” (Pope Francis). Reaching out to those in need is an act of mercy. Mercy is about stickingwith someone through their dark times. Mercy is God’s way of tell us we are loved.

We have forty five new members who have indicated they would like to become volunteers with the Network. Some of the agencies which needvolunteers at the moment are:

Jesuit Social Services – English Language Support Program (ELSP)

The ELSP is hoping to start up another session in St Albans and Dandenong each week. There are no volunteers yet for these groups. They are hopingto get started in Term 2 and will be aiming to hold the sessions on a Thursday morning. They are also looking for a volunteer to assist in making callsout to asylum seekers each week to ensure people are reminded about attending the program each week. That would require a volunteer to beavailable for 2-3 hours weekly and make phone calls from the Collingwood office; 1 Langridge street Collingwood. The day and time would benegotiable.

Two tutors are also required to meet once a week at the State Library to assist two asylum seekers currently in Year 12 (a young girl and boy fromAfghanistan) who are needing assistance with English and Maths Methods. This would suit a university student or teacher. Please contact CarolePondevie-Lay on 0400 860 033 or Carole.pondevie-Lay.jss.org.au if you are interested in any of these roles.

Jesuit Social Services – Sunshine and St. Albans English language tutors

Many Asylum Seeker families are waiting for tutors/mentors in the western suburbs and a few in the northern suburbs. This position does not requireprevious experience or qualification. N.B. AMES Australia is offering free training (5 sessions) to volunteers in the program. Please contact AMES99264633 or email: [email protected] Brigidine Asylum Seekers Project – Family Support Through Teaching English ProgramMany Asylum Seekers now living in our community speak little English although they may have attended some basic English classes in a detentioncentre or in a community transition centre before moving into the community. Unfortunately, once they are living independently in the community, they are not eligible for government funded free English language teaching available to other refugees and migrant families. They often live inMelbourne’s outer suburbs and have little if any funds available to pay for English classes and the travel required. Some asylum seeker families haveyoung children and therefore are unable to leave home for extended periods to be taught in a classroom situation. Limited English skills put them ata distinct disadvantage in their ability to access the resources and services necessary for their daily survival in Australia. Volunteers are needed tovisit these families. Jesuit Social Services –Flemington Homework ClubFlemington Homework Club runs out of the Flemington Flats on Wednesday or Thursday 5-7pm during term times. The program needs friendly tutorswho are able to commit to a minimum of two terms to assist school aged children (generally grade 2-VCE) with their homework. You could do ‘a lookand see’ visit to find out if it is what you are looking for. (If you were a Friday Night School tutor, you will love this program). Sacred House Mission – Women’s House, St. Kilda

The Women’s House offers a safe and supportive environment for women who are experiencing homelessness or are at risk of becoming homeless, due to family violence, poverty, physical or mental illness. Volunteers offer a friendly presence in the house when the clients drop in for some safetyand peace. The Women’s House operates Monday to Friday 11.30 – 3pm. St. Vincent de Paul – Soup VansThere are vacancies at present on the Soup Vans. If you are interested in becoming a ‘Vannie’, which I am sure you will both enjoy and find highlysatisfying and challenging, please contact Anne.

If you would like to know more about any of these programs please contact Anne Turpin, the XSJN Volunteer Coordinator,[email protected] PH 9815 4891.

From the ArchivesAs well as accepting donations of archival items and actively collecting current items, sometimes the Archives are required to purchase items to addto the collection. An item that would be considered for purchase has to be an item that is not possible to gain by donation, have rarity and be ofsignificance to the College. Iggy and Frances are inspecting our most recent purchase, a rare photograph of one of the first students of the Collegeand the first President of the Old Xaverians’ Association, Augustus Leo Kenny (XC 1878-1879).

Although the photograph is in excellent condition, with no visible deterioration of the photographic chemicals, the frame is in a poor condition, whichwill mean that the photograph will have to be removed almost immediately.

Frances is inspecting the damage to the frame and it looks like some little insect has had a great feed on the timber.

The back of the frame is also in extremely poor condition, the backing board is loose and the covering papers have sustained damage. Iggy isdemonstrating how he can fit his paw into the space between the board and the frame. If Iggy can put his paw in the space, then many smaller andmore damaging insects can get to the photograph.

Once the image is free of this frame, we will scan it at a high resolution and create a replica for display purposes, keeping the original photograph safefor another hundred years. The extraordinary life of Dr. Augustus Leo Kenny will be featured in a later edition of Xavier News this year, but in themeantime, Iggy and Frances take a closer look at his portrait.

It is a unique and memorable event for participants to experience first-hand how our decisions affect others in the world and it is sure to be aninspirational event.

Tickets are $15 per person and can be purchased through Trybooking at http://www.trybooking.com/181424

Here’s how it works: Guests draw tickets at random that assign them to either a high-, middle-, or low- income tier-based on the latest statistics aboutthe number of people living in poverty. Each income level receives a corresponding meal.

Guests can also assume characterisations that describe the situation of a specific person at the income level that they have been assigned. Finally, allguests are invited to share their thoughts after the meal and to take action to fight poverty.

After a Hunger Banquet event, few participants leave with full stomachs, but all possess a greater understanding of the problems of hunger andpoverty and will feel motivated to do something about them.
