We take full responsibility for function, assembly and testing. Out flexibility offers the most “state-of-the-art” solutions for all demanding applications within all types of branches.
The pneumatic positioner type SP405is designed for a pneumatic input signal 20 - 100 kPa (3 - 15 psi) or split-range. The positioner is as standard equipped with a linear cam and as an alternative with a cam that gives an equal percentage characteristic. It offers high flow capacity and easy adjustment of span and zero.
The single acting type A-SC has a spring to close function while the type A-SO has a spring to open function. Both types are built on the same principle as the double acting type and completed with a spring package to achieve the desired function. The spring is built into a package to secure safe maintenance. The other features mentioned above for the double acting type are also valid for the single acting types.Locking device and manual override are available as additional equipments for the SOMAS actuators type A.
The actuator type A-DA is a double-acting piston actuator for rotary motion. It is specially designed to meet the torque requirements for ball segment-, ball- and butterfly valves. The patented backlash free connection to the valve shaft offers the best possible solution to optimise control performance. With torque figures up to 20 000 Nm it covers the complete range of SOMAS valves. The actuator has ISO-connection to the valve and connection according to VDE/VDI 3845 to the accessories. Stainless steel screws, rods and nuts as standard.
The valve can be equipped with different types of manual actuators such as hand lever and gear unit and accessories such as mechanical switches and proximity switches depending on the application. Hand levers and gear units can be equipped with locking device.
The electro pneumatic positioner type SPE405 is built on the pneumatic version type SP405, which has been completed with an I/P-converter. This I/P-converter is located in a separate housing which is connected to the pneumatic part. Capacity and adjustment as per type SP405 and an input signal 4-20 mA.
Bus communication Control applicationSOMAS supplies digital positioner with Profibus PA or Foundation Fieldbus from leading manufactures so that we can meet your specification, and fully integrate into existing systems. SOMAS assembles and tests the function. If there are special needs for configuration/set up we can configure this before despatch.
Bus communication On/Off applicationSOMAS offers bus communication with AS-i interface for On/Off application. This solution reduces wiring time and cost and increasesflexibility to the end-user. SOMAS take full responsibility for function, assembly and testing.

Manual actuators Si-502 ENHand lever – Gear unit Edition: 2006-05
SOMAS manufactures quarter turn valves which can be opened or closed very quickly. It is not advisable in many systems to increase or decrease flow too rapidly and the use of a lever with valves – sizes larger than DN 80 – should be considered very carefully.
Use a worm gear in case of uncertainty.
Lever, type HK115, HK125
Hand lever type HK115 is designed for use with ball segment and ball valves, sizes DN 25 - 40. The hand lever type HK125 is designed for use with ball segment valves, size DN 50. Both types have adjustable travel stops and can be locked in any position.
These hand levers are made from steel and are epoxy coated.
See data sheets Si-101 EN and Si-706 EN (DN 25 – 40) for measurements.
Lever, type HSR
Hand lever type HSR is designed for use with ball segment valve DN 65 – 100 , butterfly valves DN 80 - 125and ball valves (type SKV) DN 50. The lever has adjustable travel stop and can be locked in any position.
The hand lever type HSR is made from stainless steel and is delivered unpainted.
See data sheets Si-101 EN, Si-110 EN, Si-203 EN, Si-205 ENand Si-706 EN (DN 50) for measurements.
Gear unit
The gear unit is designed for use with all types of SOMAS valves. It is available in several sizes in order to cover all valve dimensions.
The gear unit has adjustable travel stops and shows the valve position by an indication on top of the gear.
The gear unit is flush tight and is epoxy coated.
See the data sheet for each valve to get the correct measurements.
Option: Gear units for “on-deck” applications are paintedaccording to the company Jotun and the specification “BSK-99 Corrosion Class C5 M, type code 57.09”. See also the SOMAS data sheet Ti-918 for more information.
Hand lever – lockable designThe standard hand lever type HSR can be locked with a padlock the valve in closed or open position while HK115 and HK125 can be equipped with a locking device.

Ball segment valve Si-101 ENType KVT/KVX and KVTF/KVXF Edition: 2007-10
The SOMAS ball segment valve type KVT with a centrically mounted shaft, and KVX with an eccentrically mounted shaft are of wafer design. Type KVTF is a flanged version with centri-cally mounted shaft while KVXF is a flanged and eccentric design.
The valves in this data sheet are of top entry design. Short face to face dimension, low weight and small space requirement make the installation of the these valves very easy. One-piece ball segment and shaft design gives backlash-free operation and accurate control. The shaft is guided in the valve body and stuffing box sleeve. The spring loaded seat is available in PTFE, PTFE 53 and HiCo.
The valves can be used for control, as well as for shut-off applications on practi cally every type of media within a wide temperature range. Choose KVT/KVTF for liquids, media con-taining impurities etc. For dry and clean media choose KVX/KVXF. In the KVX/KVXF-valve the ball segment is eccentrically mounted and rotates out from the seat when the valve is opened. This reduces the wear on seat and segment.
Low noise (LN) trim is available as an option. The designation “LN” indicates that the ball seg ment is equipped with a network of bars that are used to split up the pressure drop across the valve. This results in less pressure recovery, thereby reducing the noise and potential damage due to cavitation. In addition the “LN” trim can tolerate media containing a finite amount of fibers or particles.
Ball segment with V-groove is available for use at high fibre concentrations. The V-groove design prevents de-watering at small opening angles.
Somas valves are delivered ready for installation and operation. The valve assem blies are deliv-ered factory tested as complete units with actuators, positioners and accessories.

Further technical information
Technical data for the materials used in the SOMAS valves, flange standard, steam data, etc. can be found in section 6 of the SOMAS catalogue.
Actuators and accessories
The valves can be fitted with SOMAS manual, on/off or control actuators in accordance with the selection table. The valves will then be delivered as tested units ready for installation.
Check sections 4 and 5 of the SOMAS catalogue, where positioners, limit switches and solenoid valves are also presented.
We can also fit other types of actuators and accessories in accordance with your specification.
Option
Within the process industry and the energy sector there are a number of applications where process data in com-bination with standard control valves will end up with problems such as high noise level and erosion. These problems are mostly related to cavitation and high flow velocities inside the valve.
Note! By using a standard ball segment valve and add a noise reduction trim many of the above mentioned problems can be solved.
See data sheet Si-108 for more theoretical information.
For controlling suspensions with high fibre concentrations it can be advantageous to use valves with a V-groove to reduce the risk of de-watering at small opening angles.
Capacity factors and remaining factors for valves with LN-trim and valves with V-groove are available in the valve sizing program SOMSIZE.
Valve sizing
Use SOMAS valve sizing program SOMSIZE to find thecorrect valve size. All sizing factors are included in theprogram.

Control and tight shut-off valve
High capacity
Ball segment and shaft in on piece gives a torque transmission free of backlash
Excellent tightness irre-spective of differential pressure
The SOMAS ball segment valve type KVT with a centrically mounted ball segment and KVX with an eccentrically mounted ball segment are flanged.
The valve body is diagonally splited. Ball segment and shaft are made in one piece.
The spring-loaded seat offers excellent tightness also at low differential pressure.
The valves can be used for control, as well as for shut-off applications, of practically every type of media within a wide temperature range. Choose KVT for liquids, media containing impurities, sludge and chemicals. For dry media such as steam, gases and acids, choose KVX. In the KVX-valve the ball segment is eccentrically mounted and rotates out from the seat when the valve is opened. This reduce the wear on seat and segment.
The SOMAS valves are delivered ready for installation and operation. The valve assemblies are delivered factory tested as complete units with actuators, positioners and accessories.

Ball segment valve Si-110 EN Edition: 2006-04
The SOMAS ball segment valve type KVTW with a centrically mounted shaft, and KVXWwith an eccentrically mounted shaft are of wafer design. Type KVTF is a flanged version with centrically mounted shaft while KVXF is flanged and eccentric design.
The valve body is in one piece. Shaft device is also in one piece for torque trans mission free of backlash. The spring-loaded seat is available in three alternative materials (PTFE, PTFE 53 and HiCo).
The valves can be used for control, as well as for shut-off applications on practi cally every type of media within a wide temperature range. Choose KVT for liquids, media containing impurities etc. For dry and clean media choose KVX. In the KVX-valve the ball segment is eccentrically mounted and rotates out from the seat when the valve is opened. This reduces the wear on seat and segment.
Low noise trim is available as an option. The designation “LN” indicates that the ball seg ment is equipped with a network of bars that are used to split up the pressure drop across the valve. This results in less pressure recovery, thereby reducing the noise and potential damage due to cavitation.
Note! Capacity factors will be reduced for valves with LN-trim
Ball segment with V-groove is available for use at high fibre concentrations. The V-groove design prevents dewatering at small opening angles.
The SOMAS valves are delivered ready for installation and operation. The valve assem blies are delivered factory tested as complete units with actuators, positioners and accessories.

For controlling suspensions with high fibre concentra-tions it can be advantageous to use valves with a V-groove to reduce the risk of dewatering at small opening angles.
Capacity factors and remaining factors for valves with LN-trim and valves with V-groove are available in the valve sizing program SOMSIZE.

Ball segment valve Si-111 ENType KVTF and KVXF PN 50 Edition: 2007-12
The SOMAS ball segment valve type KVTF is a flanged version with centrically mounted shaft while KVXF is a flanged and eccentric design.
The valve body is in one piece. Shaft device in one piece for torque transmission free of backlash. The spring-loaded seat is available in three alternative materials (PTFE, PTFE 53 and HiCo).
The valves can be used for control, as well as for shut-off applications on practi-cally every type of media within a wide temperature range. Choose KVTF for liquids, media containing impurities etc. For hot, dry and clean media choose KVXF. In the KVX-valve the ball segment is eccentrically mounted and rotates out from the seat when the valve is opened. This reduces the wear on seat and segment.
Low noise trim is available as an option. The designation “LN” indicates that the ball segment is equipped with a network of bars that are used to split up the pres-sure drop across the valve. This results in less pressure recovery, thereby reducing the noise and potential damage due to cavitation.
Note! Capacity factors will be reduced for valves with LN-trim
The SOMAS valves are delivered ready for installation and operation. The valve assemblies are delivered factory tested as complete units with actuators, positioners and accessories.

Double-acting actuator Type A – DA Single-acting actuator (spring to close) Type A – SC Single-acting actuator (spring to open) Type A – SO
Compact design
Patented backlash-free torque transmission
Low friction seals
Optimized torque curve
Standardised connections between valve and accessories
SOMAS actuators are designed for optimal function in control and on/off applications. The type A pneumatic actuators are specifically made to fit the SOMAS range of valves. They can also be used with most 90° rotary valves. The A-DA actuator is double-acting and the A-SC and A-SO actuators are single-acting spring return for fail safe operation.
SOMAS offer a patented backlash-free transmission friction coupling (valid for D≤50)to optimize control performance and eliminate backlash. The actuators are designed to fit valves and accessories with the ISO 5211 and VDI/VDE 3845.
SOMAS actuators have a torque curve corresponding to the torque demand for ball segment, butterfly, and ball valves. Low-friction seals allow for a low starting torque. Single- or dual- cylinder units are used depending on the required torque and air supply pressure.
Single-acting actuators are optimised according to compact dimensions. The springs are supplied in a cartridge to reduce the risk of injury and to simplify maintenance.
Adjustable travel stops are provided for both open and closed positions.

The linear motion from the piston in converted into a rotary motion via a linkage mechanism. The curve shows the output torque from the actuator as a function of the actuator shaft angle.
Maximum torque is achieved in the closed position which corresponds to the demand of ball segment valves, ball valves and metal seated butterfly valves.
For butterfly valves, the dynamic torque can be high in case of high differential pressure across the valve. This increased torque demand is normally covered by the actuator selection tables.
The highest specified value for each size, in the tables below, is the upper limit of permitted transfer torque.
Closing torque M100 (Nm) at air supply 5.5 bar SC SO Type DA (spring to close) (spring to open)

Accessories
To achieve certain functions, the actuators can be fitted with different types of accessories; such as positioners, solenoid valves and limit switches.
SOMAS offer many alternative solutions including mechan-ical micro switches and different types of solid state proxi-mity switches.
Solenoid valves for on/off applications can be mounted directly to the actuator. Limit switches for indicating closed and/or open position are only available for outside mount-ing.
See data sheet Si-805 and Si-811 below section 4 in the SOMAS product catalogue for codes for positioners.
Design options
In addition to the standard design the actuators are available in different optional designs according to the information below.
E = ATEX design H = High temperature design HM = Hand operated LC = Locking device (closed position) V = Larger air connections X = Special design
Standard actuators will be delivered if there are no option codes stated when ordering.

Pneumatic and electro- Si-805 ENpneumatic valve positioner Edition: 2007-01
The SOMAS pneumatic positioner type SP405 (20 – 100 kPa) and the electro-pneumatic type SPE405 (4 – 20 mA) are developed to meet the demands from the process industry.
The SOMAS positioners are intended for a rotary motion up to 90°. They are developed for quarter turn actuators and valves but can easily be adapted for actuators with a linear motion.
A number of different cam discs are available to cover various signal ranges, angles of rotation and valve characteristics. All cams discs are for a rotary motion of 60°-90°. Other types of cam discs on request.

Function
SP405 (Pneumatic type)A pneumatic input signal (20-100 kPa bar*) acts on a dia-phragm (41) and via the balance arm (46) the pilot valve (40) is controlled. When the input signal increases, the pilot valve distributes supply air to one side of the piston while the other side is vented. The cam disc (32), which is adjustable to the shaft (26), transmits the rotary motion of the actuator to the feed-back arm (35). The feed-back arm acts on the feed-back spring (53) and when there is a balance between the force from the dia-phragm and the force from the feed-back spring, a new balanced position is established.
Range adjustment is done with the adjustment screw (7).The zero-point can be adjusted from the outside by the screw (50).
* 20-100 kPa = 0.2-1 bar = 3-15 psi
SPE405 (Electro-pneumatic type)The function of the SPE405 is based upon the pneumaticpositioner which has been fi tted with an I/P-converter. The converter is housed in a separate box on the pneu-matic part. The electric input signal 4-20 mA goes to the coil (117) and creates a magnetic force which infl uences the fl ap-per (106). With an increasing input signal the fl apper moves closer to the nozzle (113) and the pressure acting on the diaphragm (41) increases.
The adjustment of range and zero is performed in the same way as for SP405.

Installation
Rotary motionThe transmission of the rotary motion between actua-tor and positioner is of a new design. No extra parts are needed for mounting the positioner SP/SPE405 on the actuator type A.
Mounting on a standard actuatorA mounting block is used as a standard solution to mountthe positioner to the actuator. When the mounting block is used a lower type of driver is required. The block is fitted to the bottom side of the positioner with screws and mounted on the actuator by using guide pins on the actuator cover. (Nuts are secured to avoid that they get lost when changing i.e. a positioner.)
See data sheet Si-806 for additional mounting block information

Mounting blockLimit switch boxSolenoid valve
SOMAS pneumatic actuators type A can on request, be equipped with various accessories. Information about limit switch box, proximity switches and solenoid valves is present on following pages.
Mounting block
The mounting block is used as a standard solution to assembly accessories to the actuator. The block is an adapter between actuator and the accessories, which make the mounting simple. All accessories following the standard VDI/VDE 3845 can easily be mounted. The mounting block is a patent pending construction and is available in different sizes depending on actuator size.
Nuts are secured to avoid that they get lost when changing i.e. a positioner.
The actuator is equipped with a lower type of driver when the mounting block is used.

Limit switch box
The limit switch box can also be used as junction box for the solenoid valve. The box can be equipped with different types of mechanical and proximity switches. Non-step ad justment of cam/flags for activating of switches.
Mounting standard VDI/VDE 3845 to the actuator, allows easy mounting by using the mounting block bet-ween box and actuator.
Visual indication in the cover (big position indicator of 3D-model) allows good display of the valve position. Also available with feedback [4 – 20 mA] or AS-i Bus.

Directly mounted proximity switches
This design eliminates the need of a box. The switch is directly mounted to the actuator and contains two limits (open/close). A rotary puck with adjustable flags for switch triggering is connected to the actuators drive shaft. Visual indication is included in the rotary puck. This solution has a good resistance against vibrations. As an alternative solution the solenoid wiring can be done through the switch. This reduces the wiring and con-nection points. On large actuators a bracket is used for mounting the switch.
