are proud to launch the brand new ‘Netball Magazine’ for our members. There is so much going on in our sport that we needed the perfect vehicle to communicate it to and honour our loyal membership. This magazine has it all – it profiles the volunteers, competitions, coaches, umpires, Internationals, partners, sponsors, the World Youth Netball Championships and welcomes our new Patron, Katherine Grainger.

Our biggest and most urgent message to you as Chair and CEO is to turn up and support the World Youth Netball Championships. We as members are a ‘stadium’ of over 3,500 people who adore our sport and it is very much in our hands to show our partners, sponsors, the media in Scotland and our visitors from 20 countries that netball is ‘the real beautiful game’ and one worthy of investment. We have done everything we can within our capacity to engage schools, clubs and the wider public but we need you to be there. What we want to collectively do is present our sport as the only one for girls and women in Scotland where the experience is beyond what any other sport can offer. Fans should dress in crazy purple costumes, get involved in the extraordinary atmosphere within the Emirates Arena, bring your family and friends to enjoy a day out and appreciate the art of netball as the ultimate team game.

We have a chance to present a united, modern and professional front as we will be live streamed across the world. If we as Scots want to create an event that lives long in everyone’s memories for all the right reasons, then we need to gear ourselves up to supporting our National U21 team, the visitors from 20 countries and their supporters and fill the stadium every day. Can we do it? An emphatic ‘yes we can’. Netballers are wakening up to the fact that both the World Youth Netball Championships and the Commonwealth Games are going to be a very special moment in time for our sport and our country. There is unlikely to be a better opportunity to show our sport off to everyone in Scotland and internationally. We have every confidence that together we will rise to the occasion and the experience we give to our young team, our members and our many visitors will be something they talk about affectionately for years to come. There can be no better endorsement of our sport and our netball people than that.

We’ll be there – will you?

ATHERINE Scotland is thrilled and excited to announce that 2012 Olympic Gold Medallist Katherine Grainger CBE has agreed to become their Patron. Grainger – who is Britain’s most successful female rower – won gold in the double sculls along with partner Anna Watkins at the 2012 Olympics in London last year. The Glaswegian has won three silver medals in previous Olympics, and has also an impressive six world championships titles under her belt. Katherine’s fantastic year of achievement in 2012 was topped off by being awarded the CBE at Buckingham Palace. More recently she was named Scotland’s Woman of Influence at a prestigious awards ceremony held in Glasgow, as well as receiving the award for Inspirational Performance at the Sunday Mail sportscotland Scottish Sports Awards and a coveted shortlisting for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

Netball Scotland’s Chair, Freda Hutchison, felt that Katherine’s achievements both in and out of her sport made her the perfect role model for other Scottish girls and women wishing to get active and take part in a sport – either as an athlete, or as a supporter or volunteer – and was delighted when Katherine Grainger agreed to be the organisation’s Patron. Freda said, “I think it is very important for us to have a successful Scottish sportswoman as our Patron to encourage and motivate women and girls to participate in the sport of netball and who better fits that bill than Katherine Grainger CBE’’.

Katherine is keen to help Netball Scotland as they prepare for the World Youth Netball Championships in the Emirates Arena, Glasgow, later this year – which was in April in front of the new Hydro venue, the venue for the netballfinals during Glasgow 2014 - and the Commonwealth Games, also in Glasgow in 2014. Although a rower, Katherine enjoyed playing netball during her school years and sees the sport as a fantastic way of not only getting active and participating in a sport, but also of making friends and building new skills. And with all the major International netball events that Scotland is hosting over the next 18 months, Katherine knows that there is no better time with which to get involved with the sport. Katherine said “I feel deeply honoured to take up my new position as Patron of Netball Scotland. I think netball deserves much more recognition than it gets and if I can help to raise awareness of the events and opportunities around the sport here in Scotland, then I will be delighted. I enjoyed netball as a girl, and I enjoyed joining in the training sessions with the Thistles and the children of Holycross and Hyndland secondary schools. Sport has enriched my life in so many ways and I would love to see more young people getting involved and getting active, and I think netball is a great sport to get started with.’’

SCOTTISH NETBALL IS GOING FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH

It was a great honour to be captain of the U17 squad. To lead the team all weekend is an experience I will never forget. As a squad I felt we continually progressed throughout the weekend and in the end got the success we had worked hard for. We felt that through our hard work, commitment and deter-mination all year the results began to show when we took to the court during the championships. This was also due to the great support and help that we were given from our management team. All the girls are absolutely delighted

with how the weekend went and are looking forward

to what we can achieve in the future. The team created a trademark grit and determination, with a mature composure to ensure they produced the

standard of netball both the team and Scotland would be proud of. They showcased a tremendous display of netball for the 3 matches show

On Saturday 4th May 2013, the crowds gathered at the recently opened Emirates Arena to support Netball Scotland’s National Finals Day. 10 teams, competing for 5 National titles, ranging from the Under 13 Scottish Youth Cup to the Senior Scottish Cup descended upon the arena. In partnership with Glasgow Life and the Sports Council for Glasgow, Netball Scotland were thrilled to host this season’s biggest domestic event at the Emirates Arena as this will also host the upcoming World Youth Netball Championships on 22nd-31st August.

We knew we were in for an exciting day when the Under 13 Scottish Youth Cup final produced a gripping goal for goal battle in the later stages of the match. Both teams- East Kilbride and Perth were displaying brilliant levels of netball and fighting spirit. The atmosphere was electric, it was great to see so many netball fans encouraging and supporting these young, aspiring players. This crazy game concluded with Perth just stealing the match 27 – 26 against top-notch competitors East Kilbride. Next up was the Under 15 Scottish Youth Cup final between Glasgow based, Broomhill, and far travelled Orkney. This was another closely fought game with both sides displaying some very tactile and tough play, however in the end Broomhill were able to pull on experience gained throughout the season and secured the win 39 – 28. The last Youth Cup final of the day was the Under 17 match between 2011/12 title holders, Perth and Peebles. In the first stages of the match it looked as though Peebles were going to have an easy win, however Perth fought back strongly and narrowed the margin to 24 – 23 at half time. Stand in coach for the day, Scotland Under 21 netballer, Jo Pettitt must have come out with some very inspirational messages in the Peebles camp as they then racked up the goals in the second half to win the game 53 – 41 - a win that was celebrated with the delivery of a box of the ever popular Krispy Kreme donuts, love it!.

Next game of the day, the Evelyn Beattie Quaich final, saw an Edinburgh derby take place with local rivals Edinburgh University take on Edinburgh Scarlets, the Quaich winners from 2011/12. The score line doesn’t reflect the tough match

play in this game, with both teams displaying some really great netball – however it was Edinburgh University who regained their 2010/11 Quaich Champions title winning the game 55 – 23.

The Senior Scottish Cup Final closed the day’s play and what a game to finish on. Two teams who regularly compete in the Netball Premier League East Kilbride and Scotstoun faced one another once again in a battle to the end. Between the two sides, 17 players are involved in National teams- Under 17, Under 21 and Scottish Thistle level- the talent present in this game guaranteed a display of wonderful netball. Both teams got off to a slightly nervy start, the pressure of Scotstoun hoping to defend their title with players absent due to injury. East Kilbride did well to come out of the blocks raring and hold their own in both the shooting and defensive circle. The score stood at 8 – 11 to East Kilbride at the end of the 1st quarter. Both teams stayed the same throughout the 2nd quarter allowing Scotstoun edging out the lead 24 – 21 by the end of the first half. Both teams remained as they were for the 3rd quarter with no changes, Scotstoun managed to extend the gap in their lead, finishing the 3rd quarter 40 – 31. In the end Scoustoun retained their Scottish Cup Champions title, beating close rivals East Kilbride 53 – 41.

It really was a fantastic day of netball, coupled with our brilliant home grown umpires, table officials and of course our volunteers from Glasgow Netball Association, we hope that everyone that was with us on the day can see the progress of netball in Scotland and look forward to another action packed season next year.

SCHOOLS FINAL DAYS

WELCOME TO THE 2013/14 NETBALL SEASON

There couldn’t be a better time for you and your school to get involved with Netball Scotland as netball in Scotland is about to go through the roof! Not only are we gearing up towards a home Commonwealth Games in 2014, an unbelievable platform to see the best netballers in the world, but the wheels are now in motion for hosting the World Youth Netball Championships in Glasgow in August 2013. The World Youth Netball Championships will attract the world’s top 20 Under 21 netballing nations (including Scotland) to the Emirates Arena between 22nd and 31st August 2013, and we want you to get involved. To engage with as many of Scotland’s Primary Schools, we have decided to make this season’s affiliation FREE! We are looking to build relationships with local primary schools to ensure that netball is developed and young athletes have a pathway from recreational school participation to national performance level. We also hope to engage with as many of Scotland’s Secondary Schools, and as such have included some fantastic new resources for your £25 affiliation fee.

Netball Scotland would like to once again extend a huge thank you and well done to all the girls who took part in Scottish Schools Cup Finals Day 2013. Thursday 18th and Friday 19th April 2013 saw the culmination of this year’s Scottish Schools Cup. The Schools Final event returned to the fantastic Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility in Motherwell- and what an event it was! Every year the talent that is emerging from our Scottish Schools increases and flourishes. The girls within each year group show how much their play has benefitted from the coaching and equipment that they get access to through their school club. What was even better about this year’s event was that we saw 12 matches take place over the two day event, with Bronze, Silver and Gold matches in each of the S1, S2, S3 and Open age groups. The 2012/13 has seen yet another increase in the number of schools participating in our Scottish Schools Cup competition. Last season saw a massive 160 schools competing for our titles, this season we welcomed 189 pupils from 78 schools from around Scotland - ranging from as far south as Castle Douglas to the northernmost town on mainland Scotland, Thurso, to even further afield Shetland. We also had 17 new schools enter into the competition this year. Hopefully all the hard work has all been worth it and everyone had an exciting two days of netball. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the coaches, umpires, volunteers and of course the players who have participated in this year’s Scottish Schools Cup competition. It has been a great season for Scottish netball with more and more young girls getting involved in our sport. Long may this continue, everyone at Netball Scotland looks forward to following the journey of our future stars who played at this year’s Finals.

WE NEED YOU!

Netball Scotland’s staff and Board work tirelessly with partner organisations to deliver a varied national remit of events, education and programmes. However, there is still so much that we wished we could do but are just not able to due to a lack of funding or resources. So, this is where YOU may be able to come in. To help us to achieve our vision of being ‘The number one choice sport for females in Scotland’ we need to grow our army of people and improve our tools, and this is where we rely on the generous support of volunteers and investors. Want to know more? Then read on….

SPONSORSHIP There are lots of sponsorship opportunities with Netball Scotland at the moment, and with the Commonwealth Games now less than a year away what better time to get involved with the sport and it’s people. From £500 to £50,000 there are lots of ways to get involved: you can sponsor a national athlete, a programme, a national team, an event, the annual Awards, competitions, the organisation and much more! And in return for your investment you can receive: event branding, kit logos, athlete/team appearances, corporate hospitality, member communications, NS web pages, social media activity, magazine features, programme branding, event/Awards tickets, PR and much more! We can work to your budget and aspirations, and promise to deliver an exciting & engaging programme of sponsor activity. So, if you know any person or organisation that may want to invest in this growing sport at such an exciting time, then email [email protected] for more information.

WEBSITE In readiness for Glasgow 2014 and the anticipated influx of interest and enquiries that the Netball Scotland website will receive, we have identified that we need to create a fantastic, new look website that will be bright, engaging, informative and functional for members, clubs, coaches, volunteers & officials. This will be a person’s first point of contact with the sport here in Scotland and as result we need to ensure that we are selling the right image and communicating the right messages on contact. However, with no budget allocated for this project and resources tight, we are looking for a web designer or organisation to come on board and create what we need as a partnership opportunity. It’s a big ask we know, but with the Commonwealth Games just around the corner, this is a fantastic opportunity to create a site that will be seen and used by millions of people and will be a great addition to any professional portfolio.

If you think you can help then please get in touch, [email protected]

VOLUNTEERS We are always in need of passionate, hard working people to help with clubs, events and even in the Netball Scotland office. So if you have a particular skill, passion or interest and some spare time on your hands, get in touch and have a chat with one of us today! [email protected]

ThankHuge thanks to this Magazine’s guest editor, Thenneh Conteh. The Scottish Thistle has been working hard as a volunteer in the Netball Scotland office with Claire Nelson to help pull this magazine together, and we’re sure you’ll agree that she did an amazing job.

WELL DONE THENNEH!

Budding BRIDESThis year was a busy year for weddings within the National Squad, we saw three Thistle players tying the knot at the altar. First was Fiona Moore who married Navy man, Joe Mcgrath in beautiful Tenerife. Not forgetting to throw a big wedding bash once they got back home for all those who couldn’t travel to the beautiful island. What a night it was!

Second down the aisle were team mates June Mcneill and Gail Higgins. They surprised guests with an unexpected ceremony in beautiful garden settings. Current and past national players joined the brides to celebrate their special day, swapping the tracksuits for glamorous dresses. In team baker, Rachel Holmes did a fantastic job of creating two wedding cake masterpieces, I’m sure you will all agree!

CLUB START UP PROGRAMME

Recently Netball Scotland has entered a Buddy Programme with Netball Europe, resulting in a twin with Gibraltar Netball Association (GNA). The aim of the programme is to encourage and build relationships within the European netball community. The twin was formally established on June 2013 and will open up new opportunities for both countries involved. Potential opportunities for player pathways, new training conditions and development of officials are all outcomes that are possible as a result of this new partnership.

The whole programme aims to build stronger competition within the European region, which is currently the largest INF Region. The development is not just aimed at national level but aimed to filter through to club and school level. Gibraltar are also set to deliver the 2016 U17 European Championships thus, this partnership will aid and support the creation of a successful event which will further enhance GNA’s strength in the European Netball community.

Netball Scotland successfully secured sponsorship from the Intercontinental Hotel Group (IHG) and also successful in receiving sportsmatch – doubling the sponsorship money. sportsmatch is an award scheme that supports grassroots sport projects that encourage participation, capacity and performance in grassroots at community level.

Netball Scotland implemented the Junior club Start Up programme, by identifying affiliated senior clubs with the potential to develop a junior club and new junior clubs - 6 in total. Netball Scotland are pleased to announce their partnership with the following clubs;

NATIONAL NEWS

8TH - 10TH MARCH 2013 - MALTA

Lead by head coach Jill Fullarton, the U17 athletes jetted off to Malta in March of this year to take on England, Wales and Northern Ireland in the action filled European Championships. The girls who travelled the distance to represent Scotland at U17 level were Jacqueline Murphy, Katie Gallagher, Sara Bastekin, Rebecca Edgar, Rachael Eynon, Jenny Hudson, Sarah MacPhail, Erin Moore, Sophie Rooney, Bethany Sutherland , Claire Tuohy and Leigh Valentine. After three days of competition and intense play England came out on top in first place, followed by Wales then our Scotland girls in third place and in fourth place, Northern Ireland.

U17 player Jenny Hudson described her experience below:‘Being selected for the Scotland U17s Squad was what I had been training for and working towards the whole year so when I received the email in January saying that I had gained my place on the squad was a moment full of all emotions – relief, happiness and fear of what was to come at NE. In March, playing with the U17s in Malta was extremely exciting but I’ll admit that it was a nerve-wracking experience at the same time as it was my first time playing internationally at an event like that! For me, competing away from home was a fantastic experience that hopefully I’ll be able to continue to do.’

The U17s were lucky enough to secure vital funding from Banks Renewables this season to purchase some much needed training kit. Colin Anderson, development director at Banks Renewables, said:

“We were delighted to make a contribution to the U-17 Scotland National Netball Squad which nurtures talented athletes, coaches and umpires and provides opportunities for sports persons to perform on a world stage…Sport plays a vital role in any community, teaching the importance of team work as well as bringing the community together in support of its local and national squad.”

“Our development with care approach is an important aspect of our operations at Banks Renewables, liaising with local communities and supporting local groups and organisations as well as charities. “As part of our overall objectives we strive to work with local communities to leave a positive lasting legacy. “We hope that as a result of this donation Scotland’s U17 National Netball team will continue their fantastic success and we wish them the best of luck at all future games.”

26TH - 28TH APRIL 2013 - CARDIFF

In preparation for the up and coming World Youth Netball Championships, the U21 Squad were excited to travel to Cardiff for the European Championship and put their preparations into practice. Two teams travelled to the event having entered the Performance and Development Section of the tournament. The following players were selected for the Performance section: Beverly Campbell, Gillian Crozier, Lynsey Gallagher, Laura Gibson, Emma Hardie, Sarah Kerr, Sophie May Leyland, Shaunagh McCuaig, Nicola McCleery, Erin McQuarrie, Jo Pettitt and Bethany Sutherland. On the final day After a close game against Wales, England came out on top taking the Performance trophy. Wales finished in second with Scotland in third after an extremely exciting game to beat Northern Ireland who followed in fourth place.

Sarah Kerr described her experience:“Netball Europe in April was a great opportunity for the u21s team to put allour hard work and hours of training and practise into action. It allowed us to play against different styles and abilities and work together as a team on and off the court. We knew the game against England was always going to be a tough match for us. England started strong as expected and we fought hard to compete. The game did not reflect our ability as a team. Video analysis allowed us all to look over what we had done well and what we could improve in prep for our next match. Our performance against wales was a great improvement from the England match. I love when we play Wales as it’s always a physical and fast game. A great opportunity to put our bodies to the test! The game showed our ability to work things out on the court as a team. Our final match against Ireland was a fight until the end. We started strong and continue through the match. Each quarter finished with both teams within a goal or two of each other. It went down to the last few seconds of the final quarter where our defence throughout the court won us the game by just one goal! I have never been more proud of my team after this performance. We all worked so hard together and gave everything we had into it. It was a great performance to finish Netball Europe. Netball Europe also helped us to

show our strengths as a squad as well as aspects to work on in preparation for the world youth championships. It’s now our time to take everything we have learned on the court and show everyone what Scotland are made of!”

The Development squad mirrored the results of the Performance group, with England taking home the Development section trophy with comfortable wins throughout the weekend. Wales followed in second place with Scotland in third and Malta finishing in fourth place.

The development team; Katie Bain, Amy Craig, Rebecca Edgar, Rachael Eynon, Fiona Farquharson, Katie Gallagher, Jenny Hudson, Alison Innes, Hannah McCaig, Jacqueline Murphy, Catriona Thomson and Leigh Valentine, reflected on the weekend as a great experience that will aid and grow their future netball performances.

With a sell out for every day, Aberdeen Sports Village was a budding hub of competition on May 31st to Sunday 2nd June. The team consisted of Claire Brownie, Nicola Collins, Beverly Campbell, Lynsey Gallagher, Samantha Murphy, Gail Higgins, June McNeill, Jayne Duncan, Hayley Mulheron, Lesley MacDonald, Karin Connell and Lindsay Meighan. The Scottish fans were behind the girls all weekend, creating a great atmosphere for the girls to give their best performance. Congratulations to Wales who took the trophy being undefeated in all their matches. England came second with an excellent performance from their U21 squad preparing for the World Youth Netball Championships in August. Northern Ireland were at their heels in 3rd place with Scotland in 4th. Unfortunately the scores did not reflect the hard work and determination that went into every performance from the girls and this time the score line was not what we hoped. However, performance targets were reached and score margins were closed fuelling the drive towards performance and increased development for the girls.

Samantha Murphy described her experience over the weekend: “After coming off the back of two training weekends specific to our Netball Europe preparations, the Scottish Thistles were feeling confident going into this year’s tournament, which was held in Aberdeen. Going into Netball Europe we knew what to expect; physical, hard fought match and we were ready. We were prepared to give it everything and put our bodies on the line. The young, aspiring netball athletes from the Pathways squad came along to watch and ask a few questions which is always nice. It’s nice knowing that there are people out there aspiring to be like you and be in the position you are in. It reminds us Thistles how lucky we are that we get to put on that purple dress and represent our country in the sport that we love! We did put onto court a lot of what we had been working on but unfortunately it just wasn’t enough for the win we wanted. But with every loss comes the learning and with the help of video analysis, we are able to learn and pick up positives from the match to pick ourselves up and move on. The support was amazing and like it never before! It has gave the Scottish Thistles a new lease of life and belief that we can go on and become the team we want to be and that we have everyone that was there to support backing us! We felt the support and that is why we love playing at home, in Scotland. After a short, well-earned break, the squad are are now training extremely hard for our Commonwealth Games selection and can’t wait to get back out on court again...it will be a good one!”

MEDIA

What a busy few months it has been for our sport and athletes, not just on the court but also off it too! With major international events, a new high profile Patron and the Commonwealth Games just around the corner, it seems that the Scottish press & media just can’t get enough of netball! Here is just some of the coverage that we have enjoyed recently…

Fans of netball may have spotted that since May 2012 the Scottish Netball team and staff of Netball Scotland have often had an unusual shadow-a camera crew- following them from training to tournaments, key meetings to sponsor pitches, even hauling boxes as they moved office to the Emirates Arena. A chance meeting with Maggie Murray on a plane led to Heirloom Media, an independent television production company, being commissioned by BBC Scotland to produce a 1-hour documentary about netball in Scotland.

Its focus is on the efforts being made to seize the opportunity created by the Commonwealth Games, to transform the fortunes of the sport in the two years running up to the games. The aim is to show how determined women from Orkney to inner-city Glasgow have been battling for years to build up netball in Scotland from the grassroots, and to document the incredible sacrifices

women make for the sport.

Heirloom Media Director, Jacqueline Smith, is a BAFTA award-winning film-maker who produces programmes for major strands and series like Horizon and Newsnight. Jacqueline said, “The story of this film is the story of these women’s struggle, and the story of what it is like trying to develop a sport in Scotland from the grassroots to top elite level. We will examine why the sport, once ubiquitous in Scotland’s PE classes, declined and why, despite huge success in countries like England, Australia and New Zealand, netball remains underfunded, underplayed and generally misunderstood in Scotland. The challenge of reviving the fortunes of netball in Scotland is enormous – but Glasgow 2014 is a unique opportunity, and the purpose of the documentary is to capture this remarkable journey.” Jacqueline and Heirloom’s Senior Producer, Anna Marriott, have divided the filming between them. Anna said: “It has been a real inspiration to film with the squads and Netball Scotland management team over the past year and a half. They are all so dedicated to developing and improving their particular area of the netball journey. They work so hard, with such dedication and heart, frequently overcoming what seem to be insurmountable obstacles. There have been so many twists and turns in this story since we started filming, which has made it an engaging project to work on, and will make an equally engaging documentary for viewers to watch and learn about netball.” The documentary will be broadcast in the run up to the Commonwealth Games in 2014. In the meantime, keep an eye out for Jacqueline and Anna with their camera.

GO SCOTLAND!Team SCOTLAND UNDER STARTERSORDERS - GO SCOTLAND!Scotland’s athletes are now under starter’s orders for Glasgow 2014, with the official Commonwealth Games Scotland (CGS) selection period to qualify for Team Scotland opening at the start of April 2013. Athletes from the 17 sports on the Games programme will have just over a year to produce the necessary performances to lay claim to a coveted place on the Team, for what promises to be an amazing home Games. What makes it even more special is the fact that the Commonwealth Games is the only multi-sport event where athletes get to compete for Scotland as a nation in its own right.

To highlight the start of the build-up to the Games for Team Scotland, CGS launched its new public engagement campaign ‘Go Scotland!’ The campaign aims to raise the awareness of the 17 sports in the Games and give greater profile to the athletes aiming for selection to the team. It’s also calling for the whole of Scotland to get behind the team by pledging their support at goscotland.org and through social media channels.

To mark the occasion a special edition set of athlete images have been published, showing prospective Team Scotland athletes in a different and unusual light, as they have never been seen before. Taken at the magnificent Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow, the theme of the photographs is about sport meeting culture, which will be reflected in 2014 through the extensive cultural festival that is being organised as part of the Commonwealth Games and which will showcase Glasgow’s international reputation as a cultural as well as sporting centre of excellence.

The group shot shows the full range of sports in the Games and the strength and unity of the team, whilst each of the individual photos links the athlete and their sport to an exhibit or the architecture in Kelvingrove, drawing out the parallels between the two either in terms of the movement involved or key attributes of the sport.

Netball’s most capped player, Lesley MacDonald, represented our sport in the iconic campaign photoshoot and tells us all about her experience: “The Commonwealth Games is the pinnacle event for all netball athletes therefore to be asked to be involved in the Team Scotland launch was a privilege and honor.

On the day I walked in to a sea of blue and white and all of a sudden felt very nervous… but also very excited. There was a great buzz from everyone as we interacted with our potential future team mates, and listened to each other’s dreams for the Game” As we walked to the grand stair case for the photo I was placed next to David Purvis who had just won an Olympic medal in gymnastics! You seriously couldn’t take the smile off my face all day - even when the photographer was asking everyone to have their serious face on, I was still smiling – oops. Although still a year away this promotional event has given me a very small taste of what is to come and after that buzz, its certainly not something I want to miss out on #musttrainhard #GoScotland

SPONSORS year we were delighted to announce a new partnership with international sports bra brand, Anita Active. Working closely with the company’s Director, Jemma Barnes, Netball Scotland and the Scottish Thistles agreed upon an educational campaign strategy that would encourage women and teenagers to wear a properly fitted sports bra during physical activity to avoid irreversible damage. To kickstart the partnership, Jemma and her team all headed north to Scotland to hold a fitting and information day with the national squads where - shockingly - only 2 out of the 50 girls were wearing the correct sized bra! After measuring and fitting all of the athletes, they were then given an in depth presentation on the benefits of having proper breast protection during physical activity, and the implications of not. All of this information, as well as how to measure yourself correctly, can be found on our website at www.netballscotland.com/AnitaActive A few of the Scottish Thistles were also lucky enough to take part in a professional photoshoot for Anita Active sportswear at the Emirates Arena with photographer Matt Wilson, and bravely stripped down to their underwear to promote the products. The 7 girls did an amazing job, and I think you’ll all agree that they look like superstars! Below, one of the ‘models’ and national athlete, Thenneh Conteh, tells us what it was like to be a part of the ‘Heroes’ photoshoot.

I would be lying if I said I wasn’t apprehensive about the ‘Heroes’ photo shoot, baring skin in front of a camera is something I wouldn’t consider to be among my skill set. However, in hindsight I am delighted to have taken part in such an important campaign. On the day of the shoot, I arrived with one of the other Thistles, Samantha Murphy, not knowing what to expect. When we entered the hall I could see a massive table set up with makeup and even our very own hairstylist it was unlike anything I had experienced before. We were introduced to the MD of Anita, whom we had previously met at the bra fitting. Jemma, was lovely to work with and made every one of us feel at ease ensuring we enjoyed the experience of being models for the day!

Getting in front of the camera wasn’t as bad as I had thought and I found myself actually having fun. Matt, the photographer, made it seem so natural even though I think he was feeding us compliments just to get us to smile! The whole day was a great experience- from getting our makeup done, to interacting with all those within Anita and getting a pose on in front of the camera- seeing the final product made every one of us who took part proud to be conveying such a strong and important message to all girls who take part in physical activities. I look forward to the next opportunity.

EMIRATES ARENA

The Emirates Arena is the latest addition to Glasgow’s world-class sporting estate and the new home of indoor sport in Scotland. The £113million facility is already home to an international sporting events programme and will play a key role in ensuring Glasgow retains its position as one of the world’s leading sporting cities. Some of the biggest names in world sport will go for gold at the Emirates Arena with athletics, badminton, basketball, gymnastics, netball and track cycling among the many sports set to take centre stage at the venue over the coming months. The arena is also the principal dedicated indoor sports venue being used at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, where it will host the badminton and track cycling events. The Emirates Arena is built on a 10.5 hectare site in the East End of Glasgow close to the Commonwealth Games Athletes’ Village and Celtic Park. The multi-sport complex is one of the largest venues of its kind in Europe and includes Scotland’s first indoor velodrome, a purpose-built indoor arena, three sports halls, one of the largest and best equipped health and fitness centres in Glasgow including a luxury spa, an outdoor 1km closed cycle circuit and

Their Royal Highnesses spent the day meeting young people at the city’s recently opened £113million Emirates Arena before visiting the Glasgow Club Donald Dewar where they launched a new sports coaching project for young people on behalf of the Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry. The Royal Foundation is partnering with Glasgow Life and the Hunter Foundation on the Scottish pilot as part of the national Coach Core initiative. The pilot will inspire and train the next generation of young sports coaches,

working with young people to give them the skills and confidence to see coaching as a future career opportunity. Coach Core was launched in July last year, the day prior to the London 2012 Olympic Games. The Emirates Arena, which was built by Glasgow City Council for the people of Glasgow, is home to a world-class sporting events programme. It will be a flagship venue for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games when it will host the badminton and track cycling events. During the tour of the Emirates Arena the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge watched aspiring athletes and sports stars, including pupils from the Glasgow School of Sport, undertake training sessions in athletics, track cycling, badminton, football and netball. They also viewed a Glasgow 2014 exhibition.

four outdoor five-a-side football pitches. As well as being a competition and training venue for elite athletes, the state-of-the-art Emirates Arena is open for community use in a move that is hoped will help inspire the next generation of athletes and sports stars. It is also the administrative hub for several national sports federations and Glasgow Life’s Sports Development unit, placing it at the epicentre of Scottish sport. At the very heart of the arena is the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, named in honour of Britain’s greatest ever Olympian. Designed by the internationally renowned Ralf Schuermann, the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome puts Glasgow in an elite group of cities capable of hosting international track cycling events. It is one of only four indoor velodromes in the UK. The unique design of the indoor arena allows for the competition space to be adapted to host a variety of sports including athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, gymnastics, judo, netball and track cycling. Scotland’s only professional basketball team, the Glasgow Rocks, play their home matches at the venue, while Scotland’s top netball side, the Glasgow Wildcats, are also based at the arena.

There are a variety of courses available for affiliated members to attend and expand their netball expertise. Netball Scotland has a structured pathway for both coaching and umpiring. Netball Scotland also provides continued professional development opportunities around the country throughout the season.

Coaching: In order to ensure the quality of our country’s coaching, Netball Scotland will provide coaches with structured and relevant development opportunities to allow them to maintain high levels of professional competence by continually improving their knowledge and skills. Courses EveryAVAILABLE GAME COUNTS!The mission was to have an effective programme in place for elite umpires and Technical Officials for selection to the international events in Scotland in 2013 and 2014. (WYNC & Commonwealth Games)

Step 1 A gap analysis only to discover that we had had no IUA or ITID umpires, only 8 x A Award umpires and zero Technical Officials!!Step 2 was to prepare a plan of attack for umpires – with the emphasis to keep it simple and easy to achieve: identify umpires, identify mentors to work with the umpires and create opportunities for the umpires to gain match experience.Step 3 was a further plan of attack for Technical Officials; promote Officials courses, train Officials, create a programme of opportunities to gain match experience

Umpires & officials participated in copious amount of events in Europe, Scotland, New Zealand & Australia – following a successful bid for funding from sportscotland, Glasgow Life, Glasgow 2014 & Netball Scotland.

A massive amount of planning and commitment from all volunteer umpires & officials resulted in the following successes:

3 x umpires progressed at Netball Europe events year on year

3 new A Award umpires 1 X ITID Umpire identified1 x Bench Manager 32 x trained Officials22 x Accredited Officials

This bodes well for all Scottish Technical Officials at WYNC and umpires on their way to International status and the International stage. All involved in the ‘programme’ have the potential to now be selected for the Commonwealth Games 2014...and beyond!

WYNC 2013

WE’LL BE THERE, WILL YOU?

worldyouthnetball.comBox Office: 0141 353 8000

THURSDAY 22nd – SATURDAY 31st AUGUST 2013

10 days of international sport. Tickets from only £6!

2013 WYNC is only the second INF event we have ever hosted in Scotland – the last being the World Championships in 1987! Over 35 years later we have the first of two great opportunities to present a positive, modern profile for the sport to the wider sporting and commercial organisations in Scotland – the second being the Commonwealth Games in 2014. It is critically important to Netball Scotland that we make the most of both these events for the future growth and survival of our sport in Scotland.

The WYNC will deliver against our aspiration to bring netball back into the psyche of every woman who has ever played the game growing up because they loved it and it was such a big of their lives. We think this event and the young athletes within it will help to inspire every young girl in Scotland to play netball and begin the journey to maybe someday play for their country.

We have a very focused legacy plan which concentrates on ‘profile’ for the sport of netball in Glasgow, Scotland and the UK. On the back of England’s recent success in their tri-series versus Australia the WYNC will build on the growing prominence of our sport within the UK. The event has provided a unique opportunity to recruit, train and develop a team of INF qualified Bench Officials from all over Scotland who will proudly take their place as an all-Scottish bench for the Championships and provide an experienced workforce for netball in Scotland beyond the WYNC and the Commonwealth Games in 2014.

Furthermore, in Glasgow and Scotland we have embarked on a massive school engagement programme which has trebled school membership for Netball Scotland and ignited interest in the sport the length and breadth of the country. Our legacy plans have drawn interest and increased investment from our Government Sponsors, sportscotland, who have committed to the appointment of Regional Development Managers who will support and improve the standards within clubs and increase participation.

WYNC 2013 SCHOOL ENGAGEMENT PROGRAMMEAs part of the Championships’ legacy, Netball Scotland and the WYNC 2013 Netball Development Group have over the past year driven a national programme of school engagement where each affiliated primary and secondary school across Scotland was given the opportunity to adopt a second country (their first being Scotland of course!).

The pupils of each school were given educational worksheets to complete in the classroom. And, they were invited to enter a competition where they could design a poster or banner about netball in Scotland and/or their adopted country. The entries were magnificent and the pupils really got behind the programme, with some even learning how to write their names in their adopted countries’ language!

All schools involved were rewarded with some free tickets to WYNC 2013, as well as a host of other goodies. And all of the flag designs were put in front of an esteemed panel of judges who were tasked with the difficult job of selecting winners.

On the 10th of April the judging took place in the Netball Scotland Offices in the Emirates Arena. The 3 judges were: Pam Carter a very well know Scottish Artist, Rosemary McCaffrey a retired primary teacher and Mary McGinn a retired secondary teacher who is also an ex Scotland International Netball player.

All 3 judges thought the standard of entries was excellent and it took them a lot of careful deliberation (over many cups of tea!) before they came up with the primary and secondary school winners and runners up.

NETBALL SCOTLANDSCOTTISH CUP COMPETITION

Scottish Cup Competition and 3rd Annual Awards Presentation for Season 2012/13 will now be held on the same day to allow as many of our members to experience these fantastic events as possible. With our biggest and most prestigious National club competition in the new £113m Emirates Arena, Glasgow, throughout the day and then the glittering Awards Dinner at our partner hotel, the Holiday Inn Glasgow Airport in the evening, we promise you a day to remember! Of course you may just want to come along to only one of these events, and that’s ok too! We’d just love to see as many faces on the day as possible. Entry into the Scottish Cup is the usual £100 per club and places will be allocated on a first come first serve basis. With the draw of playing in the Emirates Arena and then our Awards Dinner in the evening we anticipate that the demand to enter will be high so we recommend you book your club in as soon as possible. There are 24 places up for grabs, so get in touch with Gillian Stewart our Membership and Competitions Manager ASAP to book your place - either via email to [email protected] or give her a phone on 0141 428 3460. The official entry forms will be distributed to those teams who have noted interested in entering upon opening of the new 2013/14 season in September. Tickets to our legendary black tie Awards Presentation are an absolute steal at just £45 per person. However, if you book now you will get access to our Early Bird offer of £350 for a table of 10 or just £300 for a table when you also enter your Club into the Scottish Cup. Each guest (over the age of 18) on the evening will receive a reception drink on arrival, canapes, a delicious 4 course dinner, 1/2 bottle of wine, entertainment, charity raffle/auction and DJ til 1am. It really is a night to remember.

And this year we are delighted to announce that we will be joined by our Guest of Honour, Netball Scotland Patron and Olympic Gold Medallist Katherine Grainger CBE. Overnight accommodation prices are just £55 per double/twin room with breakfast or £70 for a triple/family room with breakfast. There is onsite parking that we have a 20% discount on too. And the minimum age limit for guests has been reduced to 16 this year as long as there is an adult chaperone per table [wristbands will be issued and wine on the tables will be replaced by soft drinks]. So there really are no excuses not to come along and join us! If you wish to book please call Kirsty on 0141 847 8252 and quote “Netball Scotland” to receive our event specific quote. The Awards nominations process is NOW OPEN and you can download a copy of the nomination form by clicking here www.netballscotland.com. Please take the time to nominate those teams and individuals that you feel really deserve recognition for their contribution to the sport this past season - remember, this is YOUR awards! So, don’t miss out on this amazing day and night of netball, and celebrate our great sport with other great women and men from across Scotland in what will undoubtedly be a spectacular Commonwealth year!
