MOVE OVER WORLD, WE’RE NEXT.It’s a cliché but it’s true: we are the future. If we put our
minds to it there’s very little we can’t do.
We can use our fresh ideas to launch new businesses that
change the way things are done. And there’s lots of support
in Westminster for young people to do this – whether that’s
at one of the low-cost working spaces in Westminster or
through having a mentor. There’s even a whole week this
November – Westminster Enterprise Week – with talks from
The Apprentice contestants and loads of events that will
point young entrepreneurs in the right direction.
That’s not all. We can use the power of our voices to change
politics. You might feel powerless, but if you register to vote at 16,
and vote at 18, you’ll make politicians stand up and listen to what
matters to you. Want to get even more involved? Read on to see
what we’re doing in the Youth Council and how you can take part.

Like many young people, Milena Bottero,
26, found it hard to find somewhere to
rent in London while doing an unpaid
internship. This inspired her to become
a member of Impact Hub Westminster
and start up her own business,
helping young people find affordable
accommodation in London.
What is Room for tea?“Room for Tea is a website for young
people who need short-term and
affordable housing in London, specifically
interns, apprentices, trainees or people
who are doing work experience. If
they’re not from London and they need
somewhere to stay in the capital, the idea
is that they can stay in someone’s house.
We work with a lot of families and older
people who have spare rooms.”
Why is Westminster a good place to start a business?“I visit each and every room before putting it on the website. Being in Westminster means I can get everywhere really easily.
That’s why I decided to run my business
from Impact Hub Westminster, it’s so
central and makes life a lot easier.”
What is impact Hub Westminister?“It’s like a big office, but everyone here is working on their own business. All the entrepreneurs that work here have businesses that make
a positive impact on the environment or
society, which I love. You get membership
to work inside the Hub and you also get
access to lots of networking events. It’s
a great way to meet different people who
work in the same space as you, even
though they’re from different companies.
It’s basically a space to work together
and be creative!”
What advice would you give young people starting out in business?“The first thing I always insist on is market
research. I think it’s very important to
talk to people around you. One way to do
that is by sending out online surveys and
asking people to share them. Don’t be
scared of changing your idea depending on
the responses you get. You need to know
your market and be willing to adapt your
product as you go along.”

TAKE POWER
TAKE POWER
Use, don’t lose, your voice.
Only around half of young people
are registered, whereas 96%
of older people are. Just being
registered to vote gives you
power, it means politicians have
to start thinking about you. You
can register to vote when you’re

Did you know?
• Women make up 51% of the UK, but
only 29% of parliament.
• Black and ethnic minority MPs
make up just 6% of parliament, but
represent 13% of the population.
• 18 to 24-year-olds are less likely to
vote than any other age group.
That means for most of us – women,
minorities, young people – the issues
that are important to our lives aren’t
being fully addressed. For our country
to reach its full potential we need to make
sure everyone is represented – and that
starts with us.
The earlier you get involved in politics, the
more you can do. Since joining the Youth
Council, and becoming Deputy Youth MP
this year, I’ve been working with other
young people to talk to councillors and MPs
about issues that matter to us like safety
or education, to try and improve young
people’s lives. We organise events, debate
and even run campaigns – making videos
to encourage young people to vote.
We are the people who can continue the
movement for equality. Join the Youth
Council or run for Youth MP or Deputy
Youth MP of Westminster in 2016.

DISCOVER WESTMINSTER
For a different shopping experience
unearth the cobbled roads of Seven
Dials that lead to cafés, bookshops and
high-street stores. On Oxford Street, an
old-fashioned purple clock signals the
alleyway leading to St Christopher’s Place;
there you’ll find Mrs Kibble’s Olde Sweet
Shoppe for those with a sweet-tooth.
If you’re more interested in checking out
the latest style of Vans or Doc Martens,
Carnaby Street is the place to be. Feeling
peckish? That’s not a problem, as tucked
away on Carnaby Street is Kingly Court
where you can choose from two floors of
international food, bakeries and even an
American diner.
If shopping is not your thing then grab a
bike and ride through some of London’s
best parks. St James’s Park offers an
amazing view of the London Eye and
Horse Guards from the lake bridge. We all
know Hyde Park but don’t often visit the
fountains at Lancaster Gate which offer
a great backdrop to your Instagram selfies.
