As your new Youth MP I first of all want to say thank you.
Thank you to the over 7,000 young people in Westminster
who cast their votes in the 2016 Youth Elections and
elected me as their new Youth MP.
Now the real work begins.
I ran for Youth MP because I want to make a change in
Westminster. Westminster is an amazing place. Its a
vibrant environment right in the heart of London and full
of opportunities. But there are still things we can do to
improve it. In my manifesto I said I wanted to fix all the
jagged edges in our community. I will. You voted for me
because I said I would make sure political leaders listen to
us and make the changes we want to see in Westminster.
I can only do that if I know what is really important to you.
What do you want me to fight for during my year as Youth
MP? Let me know, or your new Deputy Youth MP, Nishat
Uddin, at [email protected]

Did you know that young people aged 16-24 are the most likely to be in an abusive relationship? Your words can make a big difference when a friend talks to you about their relationship issues. But would you be able to spot the signs of abuse? Would you know the right thing to say? Do you #SpeakSense?
When the Westminster Youth Council approached me about helping them with a campaign about ending abuse in young relationships I didnt realise the scale of the issue. One in five young people, the majority girls but also boys, have been physically abused by a partner.
Abuse doesnt just have to be physical. If someone is checking their girlfriend or boyfriends phone without their permission, saying things to scare them in any way, getting angry when they spend time with other people, monitoring their daily activities, calling them names or humiliating them, threatening to spread rumours or tell their secrets that person is being abusive.
Our campaign, Speak Sense, helps young people recognise the signs of an abusive relationship and know what to say to their friends, if they are being abused or being abusive towards someone. Lots of people might not recognise things such as your boyfriend telling you not to wear a particular top as a warning sign.
The warning signs of an abusive relationship can often be really subtle.
By knowing what to say we can help our friends get out of bad relationships, and stop others from doing things that are abusive. So make sure you know what to look out for. And once you spot the signs, know the right thing to say Speak Sense.

In an abusive relationship:
Believe your friend. It can be hard to understand when youre not in that situation, but remember to listen to and trust what your friend is telling you.
Be supportive. Many people who are abused feel ashamed or guilty even though its not their fault. The more supported your friend feels, the easier it could be for them to deal with whats happening.
Avoid pressuring your friend. If your friend decides to stay in the relationship, dont give up on them. Leaving someone can be a big step, especially without the right support.
Help them get support. Encourage your friend to visit speaksense.org for a list of services, professionals and helplines that can help. You can also speak in confidence to these helplines if youre unsure what to do.
Being abusive:
Challenge their behaviour. Abuse is never OK, no matter the circumstances. Let your friend know that what they are doing is not OK and that you dont agree with their behaviour. Excuses are common, but try to avoid playing down the seriousness of the situation.
Help them get support. At speaksense.org there are lots of professionals and helplines that can talk to people who are being abusive. You could either let your friend know about these services, or contact them yourself.
Stay safe. If you dont feel comfortable talking to your friend, but are worried they may be hurting someone, you can talk about it in confidence with one of the professionals listed on speaksense.org

MY GUIDE TO
Were fast approaching exams and it can
be a stressful time for all of us. Will you
be able to memorise all the key words?
Can you calculate your answers correctl
y?
These questions are going to flow throug
h
your mind and create stress, but there a
re
lots of ways to cope. These are my top t
ips
for getting through the exam period.
Written by Emily Tsang,
17, Harris Westminster Sixth Form.
2. STAY ACTIVE
According to the NHS, not only is
exercise good for your overall health an
d
fitness, but it also boosts your mental
wellbeing. Regular exercise can make
you feel more refreshed and energised.
No one can study all day, and it wont
take long. Get your trainers on and head
out for a quick walk!
1. PLAN YOUR STUDY TIME
Try to make a timetable at the beginning
of each week. You can then pick the best
times for dedicated studying. You should
also write down the subject that you
plan to revise. Dont just go for the easy
subjects! Make sure you devote enough
time to each of your subjects.
Remember to take short breaks in
between study sessions.
3. BELIEVE IN YOURSELF
If youve done your revision, ther
e is no
need to panic. Just relax, take a
deep
breath and try to keep calm.

Yehia Nasr, a 21-year-old philosophy student
at Kings College London, volunteers as a
social media and communications officer at
the charity One Westminster.
Ive been volunteering with One
Westminster since July 2015, after seeing
an advert online. I volunteer one day a
week and produce content for the website,
maintain the charitys social media platform
and write content for the newsletter.
Volunteering in a professional environment
has really helped me to improve my writing
skills and understand what the world of
work really entails. It looks great on my CV
and Im sure it will help me land my dream
job in the future.
Its been beneficial in more ways than
just professionally. Its been great to meet
everyone at One Westminster and has
helped boost my confidence.
If youre looking to build up your experience
and boost your CV, volunteering is a
good first step. Find lots of great
